Mr brown.. you just saved me a ton of money!!!! i just bought a suhr riot for my distortion and i was thinking i would need to seel my pod and get a separate stomp for each effect that i wanted... but with this!!! man!! i have the best of two worlds analog/digital. great video brother!! thanks!!
That is pretty cool. Quick question I hope. With the POD I can't figure out how to place the FX loop so I can put a pedal in the POD modeled amp FX loop. I hope that makes sense. For example, I have a treadplate amp modeled in the POD. How can I setup a external delay pedal in the treadplate's fx loop?
Thank you!I was look for the stomp button on the front of the unit ..i like being able to put my own boxes into the chain..so much to learn my brain is melting! Just got it yesterday
Sorry for the late reply, you would have to put your maxon in the effects loop which only has one spot, or you could just put it in front of your POD, meaning guitar into Maxon, Maxon into POD. Hope that helps!
Hey, very helpful video- thanks! im trying to hook an OD pedal to the HD500 using the FX loop. However, i get this very annoying hum and it is quite loud. The only way i could make it significantly soft is by adding a noise gate right after the fx loop block. Is there another alternative to this? What would be the reason for this really annoying hum? i know you mentioned it in your video...but i dont need to bring the volume up to hear the hum, it's always present and it's audible on any recording i make using the pedal+pod. Any suggestions?
+Maru Martinez hey maru which noise gate are you using? I have a noise gate or noise suppressor as well and what you would need to do is adjust the knobs so that the threshold is long enough so maybe between 3 or 4 oclock (time factor to set it as) and for the decay set it at 9 oclock and keep the third button, the one that is for reduction and mute, keep it set on mute and the hum should not be there to much. Might still be still be noticeable to a fraction but this helps me quite a bit cause of the difference so you don't have to hear the hum as much! Hope this helps! (smiles)....
Hi Anthony. I use my POD HD500X for overdrive and it sounds great through my Fender Stage Lead amp. However, when I go to an unaffected clean sound, the gain is a lot lower than the overdrive setting. How do I achieve unity gain with the overdrive and the clean settings? Thanks, Don Arnold
My suggestion would be to play straight into the amp with your guitar and see how loud it is. Then plug the Pod in and play clean and adjust to get the same volume level. Then turn on your overdrive and adjust its volume.
Thanks, man. One other thing. I place the FX LOOP of the HD500 after the mixer (I am talking about the little icons in the screen,,,) Distortions, compressors, wah, etc... Before the loop. After the loop, I place the reverb, delay, etc.. But, no sound comes out to the amp form them unless y actually place these before the loop. Help!
I would like to use my old POD 2.0 in the POD HD500 effect loop, but getting massive amounts of hiss and noise when using it in the effect loop. And this is when I turn the guitar down (??). I could do an A/B switch, but if I could integrate through the POD HD500, that's one less set of long cables to buy and have strung across the stage. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
Hey, great video. Just wondering, the hiss from the pedal even when the FX loop is off, could this be due to the Trails setting (Setup, page 1)? Turning trails off shuts down the return path of the loop, so maybe this would make a difference. Could you please try this out and let me know? Reason is I plan to use a loop sampler in the FX loop and just toggle the FX loop on/off as needed. It would be really helpful to know this before I buy my hd500. Cheers.
Sorry for the late reply, If its only when turning the guitar down it could be a ground issue between your guitar and gear. It could also be that you have a compressor turned on on the 2.0 or pod that is trying to boost the signal when you turn the guitar down, but you know what effects you have on. It could also be a ground loop between the 2.0 and the HD, make sure your running both units in the same wall outlet or powerstrip. Hope that helps or that you figured it out!
Sorry for the way late reply. Make sure the mixer is set mono. Stock it comes panned 100% left and 100% right, which sometimes messes things up. You could also just move the mixer to the end of the chain, unless you need it there. Hope that helped!
hello I use my podhd500x the input of my amp vox ac30 and have a distortion in the loop fx pod , can you tell me how to adjust the levels of the send and return loop del'fx and whether to use the switch to "line " or " stomp " . thank you
Great Info man!! I'm new to the HD500, but so far I'm loving it!!. I have a modded DS-1 and now I can take it out of the closet and use it with my HD500 for more fuller distortion
mate tghis is my signal chain Gate,SoldanoPre,Comp,Tubescreamer,Comp,Fxloop,Boosterpedal,gate..iam using a 5150 with hd500...how do I replace the pod's tube screamer and put my Maxon OD 808 on place ?
Hi, I've been striving to find wether it was possible to do the same as what you're doing in this video but with the 'cable method. Just like you i think the simulations of dirtboxes in the pod are rubbish so i'd like to put my Maxon od808 and my Dunlop Way Huge Pickle in front of the amp but i also want to be able to use the modulations of the pod AFTER my amp preamp. If i put my drtboxes in the loop of the pod as it is set up right now, the dirt would be thrown after the preamp (no good of course). So i was wondering if there was a way to put the stomps in the AUX IN of the pod or use the second return of the pod or even the stereo out (1/4 output). Have you tested that because i don't want to have to depress my dirt boxes every time i play clean if i put them in front of the pod (which would lessen the purpose really). Thanks for replying. Mike
Amps do not have an fx loops in the POD. You just move the fx loop block after the amp. Any affect you want post amp you just move after it, such as reverb, delay, ect. Move you curser to the fx block on the screen. Press the move button once, located on the right of the screen under the directional pad, then using the directional arrow's move the fx block after the amp, then press the move button once more to drop the block. Hope that helps! Your pedals in the fx loop will now be after the amp.
Glad you like the info. Check out my other videos and the link to the custometone page where you can download patches made by me and others. If you would like, I sure could add this patch as well, I havent yet.
Thank you Anthony...I have been trying to add an analog pedal to the PODHD500X without success and finding frustration in getting caught up with sound engineering and less time with my true passion of just playing. I will try your suggestion in hopes that I have learned something and can move on. be good..MPF.
Really good job!! Excelent! Your videos are unique! Anthony, do you use the amplifiers simulation playing live? Because I don't know how to use them, they always sound really tiny and sharp, so I just use the simulation of the stomp boxes. But I would like to use the amp too... My friends have this same problem, they can't make it sounds good.. Can you help us? Thank you!
When I was using the POD (I sold it when the new HD500X came out) I always used the Pod by itself with the amp simulations. Make sure you are using simulations with speaker simulations as well. There is one section in the amps with amps and cabs together and the same set a second time with just the pre-amps of each amp. Even this video is all done with the POD, other than the distortion coming from the MXR pedal. Also, Make sure the channel your plugged into on the sound board is set pretty flat, and the adjust it if you need to depending on the system your plugged into. Hope this helps!
I have always had the trails off. I did a firmware update later and this resolved the input volume issue in the effects loop. And I agree, turning of trails does help, although I would try to keep it updated as they often fix little issues like that. I no longer have the POD so I'm not sure what the latest updates might be, check out the Line6 update software for that info on any recent updates to the POD HD500.
I assigned the effects loop to one of the foot switches just like you would do for any other effect. I dont remember all the steps as I sold my Pod when the new HD500X came out and went back to using stomp boxes and an Egnater Tweaker 15. But again, all I did was assign the effects loop block to turn on and off just like you would any another effect.
what's a good distortion or overdrive pedal to use that comes with the 500X? Been looking for a good sound and tone for a while. Was wondering if maybe I had to chain some with others.
+Joshua Yancy If I remember right I used the Tube Drive or Tube driver, whatever they call the tube screamer pedal, that was my drive of choice most of the time.
Nice video, I was finding the pod really sucks the guitar signal by the time it goes into the front of my Mesa TA-30, still on the fence if i like it or not. The amp sims sound pretty good for recording.
Ya, the wah sounds on the POD are, um, lacking to put it nicely. Probably the only effect that I dont think they did well, but most emulated wah's sound odd to me. Glad this helped!
After performing a firmware update the noise was resolved. This was years ago. The noise gate is awesome on the POD. It's one effect I really wish I could get in stomp box form. I know there are noisegates on the market, but I really liked the one on the POD.

I know that I had my trails switch off on the POD. As far as I know, my friends who have the HD didnt have the problem I did of the effects return staying on, so it might have just been a firmware issue with my POD. Unfortunately I no longer have my POD, so I cant test it out for you. Thanks for watching!
you the only person that explain hd 500 things that we don't know, thanks for that, one question, how can I place 2 pedals in the effect return, but one before the effects and the other after?
Unfortunately you can't. You could put both pedals in the patch and make two patches and turn each pedal on and off and just move the effects block, but that kinda defeats the purpose. If its for one patch, you would be better off going Guitar>pre-effect>then pod input (where you normally just plug in your guitar) then set up the loop for you stomp box after you effects. Hope that makes sense!
Highly informative video! thanks. I have an HD500, and a Boss ME-70. in my opinion, the Boss has much better drives and distortions than the Pod. so i tried to connect the ME-70 through the loop fx of the Pod and work only with the drive sounds. Thanks for the vid! Does the noise you mention at 5:43 go away when you turn off Tails?
hos do you get that sound when you turn on the distorsion? im not even close to that. can you share the patch?

Hi! Thanks for the informative video. I had a question about what you set the send, return, and mix levels to on the FX loop parameters? Thanks!
I believe I had them set at 12 o'clock, but you'll need to play around with levels to get the sound you're looking for.
Glad you like the info. Check out my other videos and the link to the custometone page where you can download patches made by me and others. If you would like, I sure could add this patch as well, I havent yet.
how can I activate the function loop excluding the preamp of amplifier with 4cables method

Yes, you could do this with any effect, rack, pedal, or otherwise. Thanks or watching!
One question ... with the method of the four cables, how can I turn Fxloop from Pod excluding premp on my amp?
I'm not sure what you mean sorry. Are you wanting to use your amp as a power amp only?

awesome!! I can add my wah pedal to the loop, cause the wah patches on my HD just don't have the sound I want.
You can turn "trails" off in the hd500 settings and it eliminates the hiss. The hiss is horrible for recording.

I think the noise you demonstrate is from a shared powerline. I bet if you powered that stompbox with a 9v, it wouldn't be there.

it does, thanks a lot
No, you cant run a powered signal into the effects loop of anything! If you plug the speaker out of the head into the pod you will ruin something!
Highly informative video! thanks.

is it possible to run the 4 cable method and put a stomp box in the FX loop at the same time?
I don't see why not.
could you possibly lay that out as to what that would look like? tkelly426@yahoo.com. i could slip a few bucks your way via paypal:)
