I've still owned mine since 2015 with no plans to get rid of it at all! One of the best effects boards ever made. It's really about the effects and tinkering that will give you the biggest abilities to shape your sound (if you're using it with an amp). Things like the graphic eq and parametric eq, noise gate, hard gate, etc. are some of its "hidden gems," outside of the usual delay, chorus, reverb , etc. IMO. Running it as my "post fx chain" in 4CM with a Mesa V-Twin rackmount tube Preamp. Which mains out to the FX return on a Peavey 6505+ head w/t 4x12. Absolutely beautiful cleans and fire-breathing distortion!! I'll own it 'till it dies.
Bought it 2 years ago to replace my entire analog stompbox pedals, purchased the additional HD packs from Line6 site. Its stompbox-like switching method is very useful, very flexible. No one will know the difference whether i use this hd500x or on-stage amps. For sure will use it for more years to come. And when i first got it, your old videos about hd500x are very helpful. Glad this video come out even its considered outdated today.
Been using my HD500x since 2015 for all the gigs since then if until now. It fulfills all my needs acoustically through all genres, is very robust and tough, and still provides me with space to extend my rig. I use it direct to PA and has never failed sonically. It is a great ROI in terms of gear for a working musician. It still works perfectly and relevant for me.
Oh man, this video is great! I switched about a year ago from HD500x to Tonex (combined with a bunch of analog pedals) to have a bit more compact unit, but today I started thinking about finding a new usage for my old POD. I like the idea of using IRs with POD - this might be an easy way to shape a better tones from POD. I haven't watched your videos for a while. I remember your series on POD HD500x were very useful to me back in the days, especially videos where you covered the 4 cable method or how to use POD in the stomp box mode were super useful. I'm gonna watch your more recent videos - I see significant improvement in editing and video production in general since the last videos I watched, and I'm really impressed by that. Congratz and thank you for the content you share with us! Take care!
One guy at my church plays one to this day, never once heard it and said "man he needs to upgrade". It is relevant. All the "best" modelers are a few years old, Fractal, Kemper,. For a couple hundred bucks its worth picking up as a midi controller alone.
I totally agree! I bought one to play for my worship band 4 years ago for $400 brand new and I have no reason to go to anything more expensive. The sound quality for that unit alone is outstanding!!
I actually got mine from the guitarist at the Church I went to in the state I used to live in. He didn't want to get rid of it, but he had a Headrush and needed to sell a few things. I got it and love it
Hello Jon,thank you for the video. You made this old guy feel good about what was a large purchase for me back in 2013. I own a Variax guitar and bass to go with my HD500x and it makes life easier for me to go out to band practice and just jam with friends and family. When at home it’s headphones, when jamming I add Fender firefighter PA powered speakers. Works well. Bigger gigs are a pain for me (did I mention I’m 68 years old). I load out an Ampeg speaker cab loaded with a 15” (old and heavy), A Ampeg BA 210 for monitor, Blackstar Unity 700 head and. A pedal board with a lot of crap I haven’t used in years and 2 old Fender basses. This is still a lot better than the Fender 400PS and 3 folded horn cabs and basses I ran in 1974. Anyhow most of the time the the line 6 works if the venue has a good PA system. I ramble but I feel my 6 gear should be relevant for the rest of my time. GB Sincerely, Pops
Absolutely. The HD series was the first time I plugged into a modeler and was floored. Way ahead of its time and once a unit sounds good, I think it sounds good forever. Great switching and signal chain building. I'd be happy to play one even without IRs or combinations with modern modelers.
I love this so much! I was literally looking at 500x on FB market and seeing them at $200-ish. That plus a ToneX might be a little pricey, but I love the versatility that it affords you. I think if someone already owns a 500X or can find a great deal on it, they make due until they can pick up a good compact capture/IR loader. A ToneX, Kemper player, Ampero Mini, even a Mooer Prime 2 could all pair super nice with it. It would give you access to legacy tones, a tone of versatility and control, IRs, and keep your rig super simple. I also love that you can use it as a midi controller for DAWs so if you use a Neural DSP plugin or anything like that you can control that rig by assigning midi mapped controls. Bro, if I can talk someone down to $100 I might just snag one of these pups just to have a little guitar practice corner in my livingroom... 😂
Hey!! -John- Jon upglowed his videos! Good stuff man. I have one of these, and also much newer equipment. I was wondering if I should dump this, but it has such nice effects. reverbs, etc. It's the hi-gain stuff that differs and lacks a bit. You really nailed it in terms of video production and quality. Well worth watching...now you're on the way up. Don't forget actual playing. Nothing grabs viewers and sells products better than sweet, melodic riffing from a product with a great tone.
I've still got one and at the moment have no plans to replace it at all. Why? Because I use it with my JTV Variax. The only downside with the 500X isn't really the unit itself, it's the Windows software. As you said, you need an older PC. I've got an older Win10 laptop which I keep just for using with my 500X and Variax because the Win software doesn't work well with modern PCs and hi-resolution displays. the sounds from the 500X are still good, and with careful use of EQ are perfectly good enough. I've done musical theatre shows with my 500X & Variax. I send signal to FOH from the 500X XLR and use the Line Out to a small stereo combo as my monitor. I doubt if anyone in the audience would know it wasn't a Marshall/Gibson or Fender/Fender I was using. Would I like a Helix? yes probably but not at the ££££. And it would have to be Helix Floor to get the Variax and signal routing I'm accustomed to using. More £££££. So, for me, yes the 500X is still relevant. Also, there's a really detailed and useful guide to the Pod HD family still available on the web from MeAmBobbo if anyone needs it. (google for MeAmBobbo POD HD Guide). It goes well with all the helpful and useful stuff you post on your channel!
I still use mine. I've been using PODs in ampless settings since the XT Pro came out, which I used with Floorboard - moved to the XT Live, then to the HD500, and currently use an HD500X for ampless live settings and quick recording. The original HD500 is outdated, and is super easy to hit the DSP limit with very limited effects, and the footswitches are horribly unreliable (for comparison, the XT Live was a tank). I still have an original 500 as a backup, though - half the footswitches don't work, and I don't feel like replacing them again. The 500X is still totally usable and I haven't felt any need to upgrade for being unsatisfied with my sound. Certainly not unsatisfied enough to buy a minimum $1000 Helix that's also long in the tooth by this point - its only two years newer than the 500X.
I just got a 500x about 7 days ago for about 200$ (with like 100$ of choptone presets on it) and I LOVE IT it’s my first guitar pedal and it’s soooo good the capability of it (especially for being a 10 year old product) is unreal
Ive got a pod hd pro, and it still sounds great. I run it into a blackstar amped 3 to run a cabinet, or use its speaker emulation. I only use the pod for pre-amps and effects. I find the switching between patches a little slow though, and it cuts out for a second.
I use a 500x and have tried to replace it with a Helix and a headriush, but each time, the 500x remains and those get sent on to someone else. I run it through a DT25 and while I dont like having all my eggs in one basket, i do like the sound!
I have a podhd500 and i love it. I bought it for 150$ canadian😊 super deal. I mic my roland jc120 and send the signal from the pod direct to daw with xlr and to my amp with 1/4 inch. Then Rec both with stereo pair mic😎
I have had mine for over 10 years. Bought it early on. Still use it a lot. I run my Boss tuner in front of it (mute) and my POD Express in the effects loop. It seems like I haven't even scratched the surface of the HD500X.
Just thinking if someone wants to use this strictly through their DAW for recording they could bypass the cabinet section, load an IR loader on the DAW track and have an endless supply of IRs for recording.
Pod express into the loop as a main Amp tone with boost/drive. Using 500x as an effect unit and easier to turn on and off the effects. On some, one line is dry and one line is wet.
I got my 500x with a hard rugged case custom made for it, it's 1 of a kind i believe, and the 500x is in phenomenal shape for 10 yrs old. I got it all with manual for $100, lol. I have been wanting one for like 9 yrs or so and it's the 1 pedal that everytime I was like within an hr of picking one up off Marketplace, something ALWAYS happened and canceled me getting one. Like 4x. Was odd cuz I do biz on there all the time and usually not many issues, but this pedal had had like a sort of curse for yrs on it,lol. Anyways, I was BLOWN AWAY by the sound. The only bad side was that it made all my other shit I had, like 45 pedals, 10 distortions etc, sound weak in comparison. Even pedals ive sworn by for decades, it just sounds crisper and tighter. I will be using this til the Kemper or Helix etc come WAY down in 5+ yrs. This is plenty, PLENTY good enough for me. And I'm a semi retired from being in bands musician that's been in like 20 bands, toured a bit etc, and ive heard countless setups and this pedal is just AMAZING for the price. It's amazing regardless of price actually. I see HD300's for $80 oboe, and 500x's for $125 all day now. A person is just missing out if they don't try one. My only gripe, is about me actually. I suck at programming these things. Thats why I had like 45 pedals when I got this, lol. Easier to use. But I trusted keeping this and switching so much that I sold half my pedals. I'm gonna force myself to dive in this week and learn how to use this thing better. Luckily the guy I got it from had done all the firmware updates and had downloaded and set up a ton of metal / heavy patches in it, so I've been fine just clicking it on and using it as I got it from him. But I love Incubus, old Korn, older Chili Peppers, Thrice, Fugazi, Beck, etc. I want to branch out and do more expansive stuff that's complex with effects at times, so I need to learn how to use this thing properly. Your vids have helped a bit so far, so ty. Well this post is WAY too long lol, sorry, slammed a bunch of coffee for Xmas eve morn and I'm a bit wound up,lol. Thanks man. Appreciate the time u put into this old pedal.
I think it's relevance depends on the user and their needs. As far as the edit software not working after OS updates, you can run the edit software in "Compatibility Mode" in Windows. This allows you to run the software via sim of an older OS within Windows. Not sure what the Mac equivalent of that is.
One huge advantage the Helix has is the 4 FX loops, while the 500X only has one. If you do have certain gear that your modeler cannot replicate, like maybe a Delay or a phaser with a specific sound, you can hook up to 4 pedals via the FX loop. You can also use the FX loop inputs for other instruments. So essentially, you can use two guitars with separate amps and effects on the Helix. A huge plus in my book.
I still love my hd500x (it has 8 years working no issues), i only add the mooer radar and improve the cabs, the day it dies, then i will see a helix, fractal or whatever, i don´t need more, cheers bro!
I like my Pod HD500X a lot. I got it from a guy at the Church I used to go to and he said it was great. He didn't want to get rid of it. I use it at Church now and created my own settings. It's also in one or two songs that will be available on my next album
You're one of the only other few people I've seen do this and ironically enough I just started doing the same thing and have been trying to dial in some decent tones. I've got a Mesa single rectifier w a 2x12 cab as well but just bought a Powerstage 200 and I'm running the pod through that. Haven't gotten it sounding quite as nice as my actual Mesa head yet but I need to sit down and actually spend some time messing with some patches to get what I want to hear. I've got a decent Petrucci style wet lead tone that I like but still trying to get some fire, high gain, djent tones and some sweet clean ambient ones as well. Lol
@SuperGuitarTuts That's awesome. Lmao. What are the odds. I hope you can share your settings if you end up finding a set up that sounds immaculate. I haven't quite figured it out myself yet. I'm running the pod with the studio/direct setting selected cus I'm assuming that's going to give the most unfiltered tone but not sure if I should actually be using the amp/cab setting selected. 🤔 BTW, what kind of guitar are you playing?
@@joshuafried4216 My main guitar is an Ibanez RG Series. Sometimes play an old Charvel. I'm using the studio/direct, too. The noise gate has been an issue. I switched to hard gate and that has been better.
Hey bro, is there any way you can explain how do u have ur tonex one setup on the pod? not the specific amp but t he setting. Do you keep 1 amp from the pod and then the tonex? or u got rid of both amps. Are u using cabinets from the pod? I ask because with the tonex i think i can save lot more DSP (im considering getting me a tonex or 2)
I got a POD HD500 when they first came out. I have 3 of them now (I'll explain). I bought a brand new HD500X for $200 from someone who didn't know what he had, because he didn't know how to use it. I have 4 DigiTech RP360Xp units (I'll explain). ... I know the amp modeling is incredible, I've recently gotten back to that. When I first got the POD HD500 it was used for and with its full potential (all that amp modeling). i.e. ever since then I've been using these units on the FX Loop of several guitar amps "forever." Each one of several rigs have their own HD500 (and the JVM has the HD500X). I want to make a point (the reason I'm commenting). I don't want to go without a Line 6 POD HD500(X) on the FX Loop of any amp I'm using live or in my home studio. Not ever. Thanks for having this channel on TH-cam. I'm going to see what else you have on these units. Oh, yeah, Yes the Line 6 POD HD500(X) is still relevant in 2024 and at my house it'll be relevant for quite a while.
I think so. Sold my Helix LT due to lack of use, but kept my 500X. Helix is great, but it's not $1,000 better than the 500X. User interface is more dated, but for home use it's ideal if you're a 3/4 core amp model guy like me
I had the Podxt live when it first came out. I loved it. I love the sound I failed in using the 1968 Plexi Variac’d. I later “upgraded” to the HD500X thinking its newer tech and would be better. Some ways yes that’s true. But. I can’t get the same tone I had with the XT live. There isn’t even a 1968 Plexi Variac’d listed in the amp models. I’m still using the HD500X but still longing of the XT Live tone I had. I have the old XT Live Presets but don’t have a way to get them into my HD500X. Am I missing away too do that?
Huge problem is the boot loop, still does not have a permanent fix. Specially when there's a boot loop, and the USB isn't really detected by the computer. Tried everything, still no fix. Line 6 should come up with a fix and new updates
mine works awesome ....i also couple it with the tonex pedal and it is super....the Pod controls the tonex via midi so when i change the pod preset it changes the tonex preset. I also use the 500x with my Diezel amp and a Suhr reactive load and a Flamma IR Cab pedal....works and sounds great....with the 500x stereo fx loop i can also combine the tonex with the amp or run dual amps....
Can you do a video going into detail on how to use an IR loader with the 500X / HD Pro please? I picked up an HD Pro X rack unit for £100 not that long ago and a brand new foot controller for not much more. I have no problems with the sounds that I have out of the rack - I'm a beginner and it's great for me, but I definitely hit major problems 90% of the time I try to use it with my Mac. Been thinking about replacing it but if the answer is dedicating an old laptop to it and using an IR loader then I'm interested.
I got the ToneX One a few weeks ago intending to explore new devices, and I have yet to get it to sound same or better than the POD. But with your suggestion of combining them sounds bonkers.....I will experiment with them both now and the Two notes Torpedo Captor X!
I’m using my hd500 using 4 cable method and it sounds good on my Marshall amp. But if i plug it in straight to my computer for recording on a DAW, my computer crashes once i load the DAW. Doesn’t matter what DAW. I tried it on reaper and Ableton lite and my computer crashed both times. This has been an issue and Line 6 has no fix for it so far. Any idea on a workaround on this?
is there possibility to connect two Tonex One or Tonex in FX loop? I see one stereo send output... . Second question - has hd500x midi control to send it to tonex (not tonex one)?
This video is very good, I'm a beginner trying to make a video setting guitar solo presets in the POD HD500x digital mode and stombox effect manually, nice to meet you from Bali
Hi bro nice video anyway, i wonder whether can we switch off the cab sim in one of the output like example we turn on cab sim in L output but we turn off the cabsim for the R ouput because the R output is go to amps input and i wanna micking the cabinet, so my goal is got the different sound of stereo output
I can no longer use mine as an audio interface on my Mac. Since 2019 or 2020 everything went to 64 bit. The 500x is 32 bit. Does anybody know a work around?
Should I sell my GE300 to buy the pod? Cuz I like the rotary sound in pod though I still miss my hi gain patch in my GE300 So the pod has a great high gain sound right? Compares to the GE300 I’m thorn between the GE300 and the POD HD 500X tho
Only thing that hd500x does not have it's acoustic simulator pedal. I don't understand why... even cheeper processadores like zoom, and Korg has it but not hd500x
Okay so I bought myself the HD500x, really been looking forward to owning this pedal, but it has an issue for me, and yes I've cleaned the pedal, currently it is in ABCD mode, so A has a clean tone on it, and then B follows with an overdrive etc etc, when you change from B to C via the switch it is a smooth transition, but changing from A to B is slow, anyone else have this issue?
0:13 PodHD si more plug n play..goods tones with less tweak..compared both hx and tonex.. I have all trhee and I still love 500x...some models on 500x are better than on hx...for example the dual rect models ..on hd wins hands down...moreover the two best cover i ever see on utube are done with pod hd..
There is a place in the deep edit mode for every amp to attenuate the low frequencies to the exact frequency you want the amp and Cab to be. I set all my amps from 450Khz to 500Hz so I can open up the bass on every amp and not be too flubby or muddy.
@@rickschneider3887 Yes, there are ways. The global EQ is a god send. It didn't even have one when it was first released. I have a low and high cut on via the global eq all the time.
i have a hd500x which is top quality ,i have a hd500 aswell which i tried to sell but no takers ,i see basic or older pedals advertised at higher prices which makes me laugh because the hd500 is far more advanced than most also with advanced edit software only a helix or kemper pips it and not by much really .
I still use mine regularly. Lately I've also been exploring setting up a dual path signal chain to use with a vocal mic as well. I still think it sounds great and I love the I/O options it provides.
recently switched back to amps and cabs, looking for a cheap but sturdy multifx unit that sounds good for effects. but this has me thinking, could we use 4cm to go through the amp with no amp nor cab sim, through the effect loop and 1 set of outputs, and in the other ouput go direct to FOH with amp and cabsim?
@@JonEleyetGuitar would you be able to try this? ive seen some 500x for 350aud and the only thing stopping me is the FOH side. Pod Go and Hx Stomp its somewhat possible but theyre $700 more expensive
There's already plenty of demos on YT after 11 years being on the market and you can watch them all. This video clearly is to talk about the HD500X relevance and worthiness being already 11 years old (which seems to be older than you intellectual skills).
till LOVE my 500X. I am looking forward to sticking a SimplifierX in to the signal chain (using the 4CM to maximize effect placement), but after that I can't imagine what else I might need (until such a day as I want to pony up for the "latest" gear... again... inevitably ;P ).
Sorry, unless you can get it for free, skip it. A Pod Go is better, or anything from Mooer. This board is from the last days of pre-Yamaha Line 6 and IMO it sounds like it. Can you use it as midi controller ? Sure. But you can also get a new midi controller with a warranty from someone else. I owned this and the HD500 when they were new and is was garbage compared to older Line 6 or even boards by Boss. Cool editing job though.

Love my 500x along with my variax JT , I have the ability to change tunings on the fly rather than bring 5 guitars to a gig I only need one .
I just got a 500x about 7 days ago for about 200$ (with like 100$ of choptone presets on it) and I LOVE IT
it’s my first guitar pedal and it’s soooo good the capability of it (especially for being a 10 year old product) is unreal
Ive got a pod hd pro, and it still sounds great. I run it into a blackstar amped 3 to run a cabinet, or use its speaker emulation. I only use the pod for pre-amps and effects. I find the switching between patches a little slow though, and it cuts out for a second.
Damn, this is some high-level video production, nice content. Subscribed!
2:13 what is the name of the video? can I have a link please? thanks
It's also in one or two songs that will be available on my next album
hey jon . i looked on your page for a worship setup and was empty. are you going to upload any new ones?
It's a great piece of gear. I've even found ways to use my own IR's bypassing the cab section and using an IR loader.
Awesome 👍 Which IR loader have you been using?
@@JonEleyetGuitar Ignite
The pod hd's cab simulation is a bit lackluster, but that's the only con in my opinion. I really enjoy using it with my mooer radar.
I turn off the cab in the patch and run into a power amp then into Mesa 2x12 cabinet. It sounds amazing. I have a Mesa head and never use it.
Lol
@@joshuafried4216 I actually just bought the Power Stage 200. It's supposed to get here today. Looks like we'll have identical rigs.
I think my Pod HD500X sounds better then my Helix floor. And it is awesome as an midi-controller.
Hey bro, is there any way you can explain how do u have ur tonex one setup on the pod? not the specific amp but t he setting. Do you keep 1 amp from the pod and then the tonex? or u got rid of both amps. Are u using cabinets from the pod? I ask because with the tonex i think i can save lot more DSP (im considering getting me a tonex or 2)
It makes a really capable MIDI controller for my HX Stomp. As well as being a decent emergency backup.
When I first got the POD HD500 it was used for and with its full potential (all that amp modeling).
i.e. ever since then I've been using these units on the FX Loop of several guitar amps "forever."
Each one of several rigs have their own HD500 (and the JVM has the HD500X).
I also use the 500x with my Diezel amp and a Suhr reactive load and a Flamma IR Cab pedal....works and sounds great....with the 500x stereo fx loop i can also combine the tonex with the amp or run dual amps....
i still use my Pod XT Live and Variax 700 from 20 years ago lol
What do you think about the pod pro rack ?
Still have mine, bought it new. You give great tips as always:). Thank you.
is there possibility to connect two Tonex One or Tonex in FX loop?
Yeah excelente video, thanks You for the idea of pedal tone max...
Bro , do you know if in the EDIT PROGRAM CAB MODEL there's 4X12 MESA BOOGIE ???? cus I can't find it ☹️
Cómo usas el tonex one combinado con el por hd500x?
I am thinking about buying one as I have a Variax standard but I also have a 2012 and 2015 iMac so would this be compatible with these computers. ?
I found one for $120 in great condition. I could not buy the unit as two of my cats got sick and really needed some treatment.
Should I sell my GE300 to buy the pod? Cuz I like the rotary sound in pod though I still miss my hi gain patch in my GE300 So the pod has a great high gain sound right? Compares to the GE300 I’m thorn between the GE300 and the POD HD 500X tho
Does it have high gain tones?
oh it absolutely does, rectifiers, marshalls and all that jazz
Only thing that hd500x does not have it's acoustic simulator pedal. I don't understand why... even cheeper processadores like zoom, and Korg has it but not hd500x
A7x preset please
Okay so I bought myself the HD500x, really been looking forward to owning this pedal, but it has an issue for me, and yes I've cleaned the pedal, currently it is in ABCD mode, so A has a clean tone on it, and then B follows with an overdrive etc etc, when you change from B to C via the switch it is a smooth transition, but changing from A to B is slow, anyone else have this issue?
Hmm, does it still do it if you use different presets?
Needing help with connecting my HD500x to PC but not detected in my device driver
this link helps me reflash and install driver of hd500x recently in case you need. just follow the steps and download driver and attached file.
I love it and now it's very affordable
Short answer... Yes
i use mine live all the time it chugs
💪
Yes, it is!
HD500X is very good, but you need to know how to EQ out the extreme lows and highs. That's why the cabs sound bad. They need extra EQ.
NO NO it's old it can't be good unless it's tubes. Plus Line 6 needs more $ for the Helix since they you know ask way more than its worth.
Great video but must consider the type of computer Mac or windows with compatible OS !!!!
Absolutely
Ich habe lust auf neues Multi hab schon ein paar bestellt ale wieder zurück geschickt das 500x bleib weite ,
Dude from Berried Alive plays this unit. check him out. i think it's still good if you can play a guitar well :;D
I still use the regular old hd500 every day lol
still a great gear
Yeah.. I think charles caswell of berried alive still using podhd 500x.
i have a hd500x which is top quality ,i have a hd500 aswell which i tried to sell but no takers ,i see basic or older pedals advertised at higher prices which makes me laugh because the hd500 is far more advanced than most also with advanced edit software only a helix or kemper pips it and not by much really .
This video makes me want to bust out my Line6 Floor POD plus just to see how hor---great it is
why not?
I have a 500x that has been in the closet for around 5 years I may dig out.
I still use mine regularly. Lately I've also been exploring setting up a dual path signal chain to use with a vocal mic as well. I still think it sounds great and I love the I/O options it provides.
That's great! I've been wanting to run vocals through it
recently switched back to amps and cabs, looking for a cheap but sturdy multifx unit that sounds good for effects. but this has me thinking, could we use 4cm to go through the amp with no amp nor cab sim, through the effect loop and 1 set of outputs, and in the other ouput go direct to FOH with amp and cabsim?
Good question! I've never tried. But, maybe if you had the left channel set up for 4cm and the right channel with an amp model it could work??
@@JonEleyetGuitar would you be able to try this? ive seen some 500x for 350aud and the only thing stopping me is the FOH side. Pod Go and Hx Stomp its somewhat possible but theyre $700 more expensive
More videos of the 500x please
Need a suit case to lug it around. Get real .the hd500 is gone
Man, if you say hd500x is good, where is the good sounds on your video?
Do they have the line 6 spider insane distortion setting pre saved in this pedal ?
