Do you use a template? Or do you create a fresh one on each project? Joe Carrell has a new course, Mixing Country Rock with Kayley Bishop here:- promixacademy.com/course/joe-carrell-mixing-kayley-bishop/
Hey Warren! I start fresh and just let the song inspire plugin choices as I go. There's a certain flow to it...but Joe has a way of making you want to try things. 👍
I like to get as many recordings as possible of the vocal compiled on separate tracks. Double at a minimum and quad track chorus. I have lots of patches and templates all set.
Joe is one of my favorites.Really !! His multi tracks I'm mixing now upon are the most well thought out ,very well tracked , and with limitless possibilities to explore !Great stuff as always mates
This was a masterclass on Reverbs and Delay! I absolutely adored his analogy on depth and space perception when it comes to Reverb and Delay. Really made me rethink my approach on this topic. I loved how he kept different reverbs but with similar purpose inactive to quickly tackle different situations rather than wasting time looking for the correct one. Really saves a lot of precious time fiddling for the correct plugin.
Love seeing those Locomotive Audio compressors sitting in Joe's outboard rack. Deadly. And this video explainer is excellent and informative, and Joe's friendly and gracious personality makes everything he does sparkle with kindness. Kudos! Cheers
@InTheMixJoeCarrell has the perfect MIX of expertise, artistry/vision, and exceptional ability to conveying mixing/production concepts in an easy to understand way. Just a cool dude, too. Thank you!
I developped a FX Bus for vocals and sometimes instruments consisting of plate, room, hall, big hall, parallel, short delay , ping pong and chorus, I copy that from the last song to the next song, as it constantly evolves. But not to this extent. Now I have to think about it more, especially about sending the delays around. Very interesting. Thx a lot @Joe Carrel
Joe I just recently started watching you for your incredible vocal mixing skills. This is exactly what I need is to get ideas from a master. Not that I'll ever been able to implement it like you. I spent my life mastering singing. Only 7or 8 years doing this recording insanity alone. But now I got you Joe. Yeah you're my guy now . Yiou got crazy skills, I always love where you end up with the vocal sound. I hear everything you do when listening along with you but I just don't know the exact plug in to get the job done. I just bought Soothe 2 . I love it,Thanks for the info Joe.
I'm not very fluent in English. but I can understand what Joe means. At least for me, this TH-cam channel is the best in providing educational content for music producers and audio engineers so far.

@@InTheMixJoeCarrell thats right! 😂 & for me... born in 1966.... the Name that can write in every Highscore-List on old Videogames (only 3 Letters possible 😛)

Hi from Maine Warren! 👋 Super cool video Joe, great ideas and tips here! I really appreciate the way you explain your choices, well done 👍 Thank you 🙏 -John M.
Awesome! Thanks so much for a breakdown into your vocal chain Joe! The ideas for mixing templates and having different ones ready is super helpful. Plus I gotta check out using the multiple reverbs like that with all the variations. Great video :)
Love Joes Style, I have several of his courses ....would love a video on creating a template that works for us...We all have seen templates videos but some just look like they work, It would be great to see his approach
So great. I wanna try all of this. Also goes to show how important a template is. ONE thing I like to do a lot is taking a tape machine like one of the Waves ones, and I'll set up a slap back effect. Then I put the left speaker at like 1/8 and right speaker at 1/16 beat and then make one speaker louder than the other. You can make the timings closer together and the volumes between the two pretty close. But gives a cool effect. Its my John Lennon effect.
Joe Carrell is Dope! Marc Daniel Nelson too ! Hmm, You guys are Dope :) Thanks a lot Produce Like a Pro for all the great stuff... Appreciate it. Thanks
great video, but can you explain a little bit more about setting up and using "predetermined presets/voices made inactive" to have more power available. Thank you.
Sure. Anytime I find something I really like. I will go ahead and save that as a preset and (if it’s not effects unit that’s currently active on the aux channel) select “make inactive“ from the pop-up menu on the left. So, if I decide I want something different than my most often used processor, I can make it inactive and take a listen to some of these other pieces that are sitting idle waiting.
Hi Joe, thanks for this great tutorial! Do you have any suggestions for those of us who don't have Tai Chi? Were you using something else in that slot prior to getting Tai Chi? Cheers!
I do still have Relab’s Sonsig as an option on that same send. I don’t know that I’ve seen anything. Do exactly what Tai Chi does though. Black hole from Eventide can be pretty crazy
Best vid on reverb and delay I've seen. Joe, you say you have SSL plugin always there, but it does do not show on the Ins and Sends. Where do you put it?
Ahh, thanks for that - I found it - I was looking for ssl label, but you wisely labelled ChanStr2. Makes sense! Thanks again great tute. Cheers from Australia.
If you mean create a similar Pro Tools template, absolutely. Use the IO settings tab to name them, something memorable beyond the generic “bus 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, etc.”. Then, when you create your sends and aux returns, you can make the aux names match the sends names and it stays much more user-friendly. Vox Dly Short, Vox Dly Long etc and save as a template. So much more intuitive than the generic default names. Best wishes
Yes I’m sorry I forgot to mention that. I like to remove 3 to 6dB very often. More often than not. I just don’t want that bright shiny S to smear in stereo 😂. Every once in a great while, though it does help create a retro thing, so I will turn them off.
My tip would be if you add a little excitement to the room with carefully placed reflections when you add artificial ambiance it takes it from fake reality to augmented reality. it takes time to set up and vocals need to be on point... but the results!!!
Do you guys ever had to deal with unexperienced clients who aren't ready to listen their voice in harmony or with effects? Usualy I feel myself restricting my creativity when mixing vocals.
That’s the beauty of it. We’re really not using much processing power. When those plug-ins are in “inactive” mode, they are there ready to be recalled, but are currently using no processing power at all.
@@InTheMixJoeCarrell very interesting. But how does that work? Are they bypassed with automation or.... Maybe a vid covering that alone would be useful
@@OopaOooopa only one would be in an active state using DSP on each aux return. All the others that you see Grayed out above and below are made inactive. They are just some favorites that I saved there to pull up quickly in case my first choice isn’t the right choice. I’m not sure what DAW you are using, but in ProTools you just click on the insert and choose “make inactive” from the pop up. It’s super easy thing fortunately. I’m sure most DAWs have this option. Once you find where to click and choose that it’s a great thing. Maybe Google it for your chosen DAW
Oh man that song from Mackenzie… i miss mixing tracks like that… so many things you can do to the vocals to make them sing right into your soul. Back in 2016 i was mixing an album for one girl named Domiqiue Pancner, i was literally crying over some songs because i did a such a great job.:))))
SSL need to do channel tolerance modelling like brainworx SSL emulations, Its too bad the Brainworx one is better than the native SSL one that would sell me more the UC1
@@DarkTrapStudio I do use neve on kick, snare, bass, and some leads when tracking. When mixing, I often thicken the kick, snare , and Tom’s with neves prior to SSL. And I like them on pianos too. Great high end and the 2254/33609 works great on them too. Have a good one
@@DarkTrapStudio yeah I’m a big fan of the 360. Allowing me to use some other channel strips here and there with hands on is exactly what I was hoping for.
There are other ways to create depth. As we know sounds get duller as they get further away. Before reaching for the reverb try EQing a sound by rolling a lot of the top end off. You get the sense of depth but it's not awash in reverb
