    Went there a couple of years ago, had the famous mutton chop. Very tender, not gamey at all, not as heavy as a steak, good charred fat from the edge of the chops imparting flavor on it. Was one of the best dishes I've had. A stranger also paid for our whole meal out of nowhere, remained anonymous. Waiter told us when we finished that someone in the restaurant paid our check! Not sure how often that happens in New York!

    • @Jamesnu
      @Jamesnu  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wow! That was really generous! I've never had that happen to me. I completely agree with you regarding the mutton chop. I actually was at Keens last week and had it. I loved it! I probably will post a video of that experience next month.

    James; totally agree with you. All being said, Keenes offers a totally better dining experience than Lugars! I first did Lugars in the '70's when it definitely was an icon! I first dined at Keenes in the '90's & continue to come back, even with the introduction of numerous fine-dining steak-,houses in NYC. My favorite dish has always been the mutton chop! Keenes for me is overall a much more satisfying dining experience whether it be lunch in the bar or dinner in the Lincoln room. Great vlog!

      Thank you so much! Yeah, I really have got to try that mutton chop now! And it wasn't just the food that made Keens such a great experience, it was the service, atmosphere and history of the establishment that all made it great lunch!

    That steakhouse is pure gold. I visited the city a year back. Everything was devine, from the fillet mignon, the Yukon gold mashed potatoes to finally the butterscotch sundae. Next week I’ll be in NY once gain, and my first order of business is Keens once I land. 😂

      In Hoboken NJ where the Maxwell House coffee company is there is a Steakhouse called Maxwells that adds a very hot cherry pepper along side their huge steaks.

    Thank you for this review on Keens. So much history and nostalgia. I love stepping back in time when visiting hotels and restaurants that have stood the test of time in quality and reputation. I didn't realize that some fine dining restaurants in NYC didn't take Credit Cards like Luger.( that was good information ). The Steak did look amazing here at Keens and creamed spinach is one of my favorites. How did the spinach compare to Benjamin's cream-less version ?

    • @Jamesnu
      @Jamesnu  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you! I really enjoyed Keens and luckily most NYC restaurants take credit cards, but Lugers is an unfortunate outlier. To me the creamed spinach at Keens was just a little better than Benjamin's version, but still, I thought it was very impressive just how close the cream-less spinach at Benjamin's tasted to the creamed versions.

    Hey James, another Masterpiece of a Video. Please continue to produce wonderful content.
    Thanks for the breakdown and comparison, between Peter Luger and this place. I probably don't have the funds to go to both, but if I had to make a choice, I'd definitely choose Keens Steakhouse. And it is centrally located in the heart of midtown. Right Next to my favorite outdoor Ice Rink at Bryant Park.
    So I will go ice skating, and then eat a delicious Beef.
    Stay safe and well!

      Haha. I just walked from Keenes to Bryant Park after lunch just now. I wouldn’t say it’s next to it, but it’s a good healthy walk. I feel a sympathy for you. That you should mention a book that you were reading and that it was by Amor Towles are huge plus points at least for me. Also, I remember Chicago from my childhood but have lived in New York for most of my life. I definitely agree with your thoughts about the Grand Central Oyster Bar. Many years ago they would offer a huge variety of fish but now it seems they stick to what they can always obtain and what they can always sell. It is also expensive; I don't presume to judge if they are overpriced. But they still have a big variety of oysters, even in non-R months, but more importantly the atmosphere is priceless, this is not a seafood shack or even a suburban cave decorated with fishing nets and life preservers--this is overwhelmingly urban and Manhattan, an evocative place where we can at least imagine the commuter culture made possible by railroads back before the millennium. I remember the carts by the departing trains selling cocktails; now I think someone hoping to survive the journey home must buy nips at maybe two or three liquor stores in the station.

    • @Jamesnu
      @Jamesnu  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yeah, there were aspects of the Grand Central Oyster Bar that I really appreciated! Restaurants like that are very special. I still think it's one of the most beautiful restaurants in NYC. I definitely enjoy a place that has got a bit of history and seeks to preserve it. For those reasons alone I believe makes it worth dining there.

    Correct me if I am wrong, but I just noticed that Keens doesn't offer rib eye steak in their menu (they have prime rib, but not rib eye). Kind of disappointing in a steak house. The profit margin is better with just offering t-bone and porterhouse I guess.

    Personally think Keen's blows Peter Luger out of the water. The overall experience has just been way more consistent. I've had great meals at Luger, but have also had steaks that were undercooked and potatoes that were bland and underseasoned. Keens is in my top 3 along with Gallagher's & Del Frisco's Double Eagle... Peter Lugers is great for a porterhouse but it's not as great as I remember it when I was younger, going with my father. (like 22-23 years ago)....something that is really good at Lugers... their burger - it's amazing as far as burgers go. I'm going to Peter Luger (not Lugers or Luger's) tomorrow night, still my favorite steakhouse in NYC (and don't have to go into Manhattan which is a plus). Yes the decor is nothing but don't really care about that. I have a Peter Luger CC or just bring cash so no big deal.
    I have found the creamed at Keens to be watery. I didn't care for the Mutton, maybe it was the temp that it was cooked, too bloody for me. The place is really cool and really good
    It has become "cool" to bash Peter Luger the last few years and I'd be willing to bet that most couldn't tell the difference if they were eating them side by side (same cut of meat and sliced the same way)
