Is Keens Steakhouse Worth The Hype? Revisiting NYC's Iconic Steakhouse

- Keens Steakhouse is the third oldest steakhouse in New York City after Delmonico's and Old Homestead Steakhouse. It also has a very convenient location, being smack dab in the middle of Midtown, near the Empire State Building and Penn Station. We have actually visited Keens before, and we tried the famous Keens mutton chop, a massive piece of mutton almost the size of my head. I always felt though that we didn't really scratch the surface of everything offered at Keens, particularly their selection of steaks.
Therefore, for the first time ever on UA Eats, we have revisited a restaurant. If any restaurant warrants a revisit, it is Keens. As one of the most famous steakhouses in NYC, it is regarded by many critics and locals as the best steak in NYC as well. We put that to the test, ordering a Keens T-bone steak, that way we get to taste both the Keens NY Sirloin and the Keens filet mignon.
Keens is a restaurant filled with history. The Keens pipe club had many noteworthy people in history as members. The connection between Keens and Albert Einstein, Keens and Buffalo Bill, Keens and Teddy Roosevelt, and Keens and Abraham Lincoln just to name a few are well known. But this channel primarily focuses on food and whether or not the steak at Keens is worth the hype or not is all that matters here!

Keens Steakhouse
72 W 36th St., New York, NY 10018
I want to correct something: Abe Lincoln did not eat at Keens. Keens was actually founded 20 years after his death. The restaurant displays some items that are related to Lincoln, such as the large painting in the video (I also hear the playbill he was holding when he was assassinated is displayed there). Somehow I got wires crossed and accidentally thought for a sec that Lincoln ate there. My mistake!
You are not forgiven.
Thanks for clarifying!
Have you tried Cote?
stop closing your eyes when you take a bite. U look ridiculous
As soon as you mentioned it i noticed that previously in the video, on the front door, it said est 1885 and that it would have been impossible. Thankfully you corrected yourself, good work!
I'm a vegetarian and live 1,000s of miles away from NYC, so I can't even eat 99% of what you review, yet I have watched every UA Eats video since the beginning haha. You're a kind dude living his best life. Love the content!
Thank you for your generosity! And I'm glad you still enjoy my content even if you do not eat meat!
Now that’s a compliment!
@@uaeatsI’m the same! Vegetarian for over a decade but I still enjoy your content 😊 greetings from New Zealand 🇳🇿
So fluffy I wanna die
Vegetarian here too who loves UA Eats !
One of the most over looked aspects of this channel is the fact that he usually gets no special treatment unlike a lot of celebrity food bloggers or popular TH-camrs in general. He’s getting the same quality of food that everyone else gets. It’s as real as it gets
That's because he's awkward, relatively unknown and recording on his phone. That shit is ordinary now. But hey here we are.
might have to do with the 48K followers lol - he could walk up to any Maitre d' and say hi I'm UA! and they would say uhhh okay, are you dining alone...?
I Don’t mind the mic change actually might like it a little better. The sound of that bread crunch makes me hungry!
Thanks for the feedback!
Guy in the background at 2:09 with the stab grip on the utensils is having a rough time
hahahaha omg what is he doing?? very strange
My dad always says... "Let the knife do the work"
Looks like he was doing surgery on the bread.
😂
Lol what is it with grown ass people not knowing how to use cutlery? It's crazy haha
His face at 10:43 while cutting the steak is why I like this channel. The joy of eating. Thanks for the vids, UA.
I went to keens during my visit to new York last Jan. Because of your review of the mutton chop. So glad I went. Such a great steakhouse. The mutton was so tender and flavorful and different than beef, and I loved their huge scotch and whiskey list. I also bought one of their clay pipes to display at my house. 😂
Wow, I'm glad you had a great time there and my video inspired you to go!
Mutton is different than beef.
Hey i see my pops in the video! the bartender who made the Limeade!
Sorry I missed the premier. Excellent review. I always learn something.
THE BEST FOOD CHANNEL IN THE WORLD! Honest, simple, even innocent in the best sense of the word.
Thank you for the kind words!
I just discovered your channel and I love it! As a former New Yorker that no longer lives there, I live vicariously through your videos. Great stuff UA!
What a wholesome program, thank you friend!
You made the right move doing youtube full time i love it, especially the steakhouses. Good stuff!!
I'm so glad to hear the T-Bone Steak was so outstanding/juicy! and that the food arrived so quickly. A friend of mine years ago always liked this steakhouse best. I always appreciate the level of detail and analysis in your videos.
UA, you are freaking awesome man!! Keep up the good work!
Good for you. So happy you had dessert. Got to once in a while. Great review. Steak looked amazing. Spinach perfect. Very good. Loved it.
Great to see your channel growing!! I think I subscribed about 15k subscribers ago, and that was only late last year. Good luck UA, I love your reviews!!
Hi UA--love the channel! At your suggestion, I had the “taste of mutton” for lunch today! Absolutely delicious and an incredible value at $29!! Also had the bananas foster for dessert. Fantastic. Thanks for the tip, really appreciate it. Keep up the great work.
The crunch on that first bite of bread was incredible. :)
Due to some medical issues recently my diet is very limited. Watching your videos brings the flavors and joys of eating beautifully prepared food to me instantly. I really enjoy your videos and appreciate you sharing them. Thank you
Hi UA. Love your channel, the level of detail you go into and that you're not just a cheerleader. You go a lot of places I can't afford so I u ever do get to one I'll know what is really worth it. I just moved back to Chicago.. I am STUNNED at the quality and diversity of restaurants here. Not quite NYC but close man. If you come here, please do kind of what you did in Vegas and hit maybe 4 or 5 places at least and only one for deep dish pizza! I'm telling you man stay in the west loop and you'll be able to walk to 20 different world class restaurants in a one mile radius. They're not cheap but def cheaper than NYC and some awesome international restaurants too.
Hi, first time commenting in your channel I think? But, I enjoyed many videos in your channel, you do great reviews! Esp love your steakhouse reviews!
Really enjoy your videos UA. You are always fun to watch.
I would like to offer a suggestion. When you point your camera at the menu you tend to focus on what you are going to choose. It would be helpful if we could view an entire section, as well as holding it there a bit so we have time to look it over. I believe this would help us learn more about the restaurant. Thanks.
Great vid nice to see some desserts!
Thank you for sharing. I’ll give it a try.
I rarely subscribe to any TH-cam channels, and I am normally not a big fan of food critics, and I am very neutral to steak. However, you are doing a very good job. You are direct to the point and rate these places fairly and objectively. Also, unlike those pretentious food critics, you are very humble and friendly. I watch a couple of your videos when I get home every day after work. Thank you 😊
Lincoln was never there…he passed away roughly 20 years before Keens opened
Yep, I wrote a pinned comment clarifying the error
Passed away? Was killed
@@davidhaber5304A distinction without a difference.
I don't think that's how what happened at the theater with John Wilkes booth is described but yeah ..maybe it was a Lincoln....impersonater ! Lol
Nice second review, brother! Keen's is in my top 5, and I always enjoy. I'm going to shoot to Porter House tomorrow, one of the best $39 lunch specials around (Time Warner Center) Thanks again for a great review!
Love it. UA closes his eyes to hone all his senses to his tasting.
UA I've been following your channel since watching your peter luger video... Your channel is THE ONLY food review channel in youtube that gives honest, thorough and detailed information whether a food is good or bad... Keep up the excellent work and please never change even when your channel getting bigger in the future... Greetings from Indonesia👍
Love Keen's! Great vibe.
That was a winner UA face! I gotta try this place!
I always enjoy your food reviews, even those of foods I may not like. If I may offer my observation on one thing that has bothered me while watching your videos, it is when you eat from the side dish with the serving spoon. The serving spoon is meant to put some of the side onto your main plate. It is not meant to be used to eat whatever the side dish is. Keep up the great work and I look forward to your future food reviews.
Loved this spot on ny birthday. The mutton was crazy!
The mutton chop is very good and it's also huge!
Favorite steakhouses for steak are this, Delmonico's and Del Frisco's Double Eagle. All of them are excellent.
I watched a documentary on Keens and the Mutton looks fantastic. If i ever return I will try it out.
2nd 👍! Hi UA! Hi EVERYONE! Mmmmmm OOH Wee! I'm excited for this meal
I’ve been to Gallaghers and to Lugers. We might be back in New York next spring and Keens and/or Delmonico’s are on the short list next. Thanks for your reviews Ue.
Hi UA love your Chanel
I don't own any Chanel products, or any luxury fashion actually, but thanks for thinking so highly of me!
I visited Keens for its mutton chop and ordered "taste of mutton" and yes after watching your review! Must say it is delicious. I am going to visit NYC is April and will go again 😊
*Keen's
I never eat a filet mignon , always a big fat ribeye ! No better flavor 😋 out there ! Thanks for sharing
The mutton chop is main event at Keens. It's amazing and unusual. A must order.
Very yummy video!
Great review, my favorite steak is bone in ribeye the best!
I agree!. The juiciest and most flavor.
I loves your channel I'm 😊 glad you are doing Ytube full time too.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the video as awlays. :) For future videos, can you also specify at end what total cost of your dinner is?
Hi UA. I really enjoy your videos, but please you have to start eating the food and finishing it.. that's my favorite part about watching food videos seeing the plate empty. LoL 😂
Hello UA and everyone
13:30 .... I'm glad u clarified "do it" by saying eat it bc I was thinking u were going to do something else to it.
Going in 2 weeks for my 40th birthday. Ive been to Gallaghers, but cant wait to try Keen's!
The roasted peppers with the steak is a nice touch.
I always order it rare so it doesn't get overcooked it's better to send it again to get a little more cooked then it be overcooked
It’s fun to just bounce around food reviewer TH-cam. You’re one of the stops I make lol
Nice vid ua
Did you ever do River Palm Terrace in Edgewater NJ?
I'M A BIG FAN!!! FROM THAILAND
Hi UA.. fan from the UK… you should try the Benjamin if you haven’t already… I believe similar to Wolfgang’s the owner is ex Peter Luger but when I went a few years back was a fantastic Porterhouse.
UA, if I may offer some critique. When you first get the steak cut directly through the thickest part. First reason is to accurately judge doneness, most cuts just can’t be cooked evenly like this T bone and will show a little more well toward the edges. Secondly, if the steak is not cooked correctly you will want to notify the staff ASAP, not halfway through the meal when you reach the thick point and realize it’s either over/under. The staff will want to know at these high end restaurants, but it’s best to check the thickest part of the steak before making a judgement call.
I always go for the Porterhouse for two. It has the best of everything.
Come to Indianapolis and go to St. Elmos! Don't forget to try the shrimp cocktail too
T bone and prime rib in Keens is definitely my favorite among steakhouses in NY i have been
I personally love Filet Mignon. Its definitely my second favorite cut, ribeye wins of course for first place.
You like the fattiest and leanest high end steak cuts. Very fun
Did the waiter ask if you were ok while eating the steak?! UA Steak Face 😂😂😂
Saw an episode of No Reservations on Keens about 10 yrs ago. Decided to try the Mutton because it looked so good. Maybe it was just a bad night but it was very gamey and not tender.
Mutton is gamey and not as tender as a steak or lamb, it wasn’t Keen’s having an off nights, it was you discovering you don’t really like mutton.
UA could you review Le Rivage in New York it's chef Frenchies restaurant and I wanna see how good it is. Maybe take a look at mission sandwiches too
Keens Mutton Chop and sitting at the old bar is a top NYC experience
It seemed that I haven’t seen you eat a steak in a while!!
Try del friscos by Rockefeller center. Their bone in ribeye is very good. Bread excellent. Blue cheese salad with bacon excellent. And their lemon layer cake is a signature must. The best !!!
UA with the fresh Eddie Bauer coat!
The creamed spinach looked amazing. I agree with the steak. I would have gone for the prime rib personally. And the cheesecake looked delicious but needed some fresh fruit alongside and a small garnish for $14. Overall, I’d try it.
That part when you close your eyes and go "mhmm" while shaking your head in satisfaction.... I feel that haha
alright i gotta try Keens now
Give Mark Joseph a try. Went twice. Great both times.
Have you ever been at Wolfgangs?i remember a great porterhouse👍
10:43 😂😂😂😂 dude 🎉🎉
You have to try Fette Sau for their pastrami there in NY!
I know you said you aren't a prime rib guy, and I feel the same, but Keen's has some of the best prime rib I've ever had.
I like those Peppers on the side. Thats how we ussually eat steak in Spain.
It was called Keen's Chophouse back in my days..went to many wine tastings there..
I have a question UA,What is the difference from a T-Bone and A Porterhouse? Which one is better? Thanks and love the content!
Porterhouse is cut from higher up along the loin, has larger portion of tenderloin attached to the striploin. T-bones have a smaller portion of tenderloin as its cut towards the tail end.
Getting a steak in 10 minutes seems very suspicious to me
Getting the steak in 10 min. is quite curious especially considering a 5 min. rest time. I managed a steakhouse and it's not impossible to get exact med-rare. Good review.
It would be cool if you did a New york & Chicago comparison on steaks.
Do you have any Chicago steakhouses you would recommend?
@uaeats There are plenty to choose from. Such as STK. Kenzie Chop House, Smith and wollensky and Morton's Steakhouse, to name a few. Chicago does steak very well and has plenty of options from budget steaks like Matteson's steakhouse to aged Prime steaks.
@@uaeatsGene & Georgetti Italian steak house and order their fried calamari. You should try steak at Craft restaurant by Tom Collichio. New York or Vegas.
Can you do like a top 3 list? it's hard to know which is best
Heading to NYC end of May for a couple days. Trying to narrow down a steak joint to try but dammit, you have too many!!! Lol
Any recommendation for someone on a quick visit?
Will be staying either CP area or next to MSG....
Great review I love keens I do love prime rib and Judy went to 4 Charles and had a 5 Charles cut that's great. You should review
I went to Le Jardinier last Fri for a great meal on Mar 5 going to Mischa for $29 hot dog and saga for dinner I turn 62 that day Mar 8 rqos again Mar 10 palm court bfast then allow for dinner Mar 11 Coral omakase and in aprol Legasea
So you weren’t too keen on the Filet Mignon cut? Sorry.. .since there were so many puns in this one I had to add one more! Great review! 👍
The Mutton Chop is my go to in NYC.
Tender like young lamb.
#headingbackinJune
What about the Cigars Menu?
Couldn't help but notice that UA was surrounded by Asian diners. Keens must be popular with Asians looking for a nice heavy lunch 😄.
Great review! hit up Peter Luger best steak in Brooklyn. Also hit up new Hyde park pizza in ozone park….both are amazing both only take cash…
I may have an unsophisticated palate so I found Keen’s to be underseasoned for my taste the one time I’ve been there…I much prefer the pepper char on the steaks at Strip House
Get the Rode II mic that Sam Sulek uses, no wires!!!
The mutton chops are great.
Hey, do they offer steak sauce? Or an option of mushrooms and onions with the steak? You'd better go back and check it out.
If the steak came out in 10 min, and a steak rests for 5 min or so, a 5 min cook is pretty fast - especially on a thick cut.
I'd assume he was off on the time or they parcooked the steak.
@@fadsa342Parcooking would make sense at lunchtime.
WOW! UA Keens is the perfect place for a splurge for sure but worth it in NY CITY. THE T-bone must have just been awesome. The crust was outstanding on the NY STRIP side but filet was not so good you're right have to cook the filet on the cooler side NY STRIP sirloin on the hot side of grill!!! The limeade worth the price refreshing. Creamed spinach perfect!!!! Rolls were perfect looking. You got the NY CHEESECAKE. I loved the light texture of the cream cheese the cake and even though the Graham cracker crust was not crunchy which is what I like it still looks amazing! All in all expensive for me but if I was to splurge I would pick KEENE'S. I know Peter Luger is a five star steak house but you said Keene's Steak House was great too. Look at how crowded already!!!! Great revue of Keene's
*Keen's
Now I have to do a lemon/lime taste test. I've always considered lime to be more sour than lemon.
Don’t forget mutton is often eaten In various regional southern bbq as well.
Man, I need a job like this!!!!!!!!!
