For Eric Ripert, Buddhism and deep appreciation for love. I had a chance to listen to him at a coaching/leadership event many many years ago and he stressed that everything in life comes with pressures and pain (Buddhism), but the challenge is to focus not on that (which is the normal human instinct), but on love. And often, what/who you love puts you in those painful situations to begin with. So he finds that peace and that keeps him going. And it's also why he's got so few restaurants when other people of his caliber have so many. He only expands or does something that he can say he loves.
Marco Pierre-White once said the hard thing is to get to 3 stars and after that it's a well-oiled machine, as longas you stay behind the stove it will keep up. What's hard isn't service at this level anymore, it's work-life balance.
@@jas_batailleand then he gave the three stars back because he did not want to be judged my Michelin inspectors who knew less than him. Weird , it were the same inspectors who gave the stars in the first place . White is not a very relevant chef anyway . Lots of drama .. that’s it .
You literally brought me to tears, thank you so much for being an ambassador for people who crave this culinary excellence and do not have the courage to step out.
eating a truly special place is always worth the money. My grandparents treated me to a really nice Chinese restaurant for my High school graduation and I STILL remember the fried scallops dish I had that night. It was an expensive dish but I remembered how they wanted to take me out and they said they were proud of me and this was over 20 years ago and I still vividly remember the night.
My 25 year old nephew and fellow foodie surprised me with the most amazing Christmas gift, a tasting with pairing at this amazing restaurant. It was pure magic and a memory I will cherish forever! If you have the opportunity to experience excellence like this, GO FOR IT! Ripert is a genius!
I appreciate that you are able to critique a restaurant while not ruining the experience for yourself. Truly enjoying all the small things, while pointing out your opinion on things as well. I see too many reviewers go all in one direction. They either hate on every small thing and don’t end up appreciating the experience, or they are biased and can’t find anything wrong at all. Thank you!
Thank you! I call it like I see it and always go in with an open mind. Plus, I want to go to restaurants that I enjoy. I'm not a big fan of going to a place just to harshly critique it.

Congratulations on experiencing a bucket list adventure. I agree completely; these restaurants appear to be intimidating, but a great one is focused on making all patrons welcome. Thanks for sharing 🇦🇺
Hell yeah dude, I love your attitude about embracing doing things by yourself. Like you said, don't wait around for someone, just do it! That's a huge part of my personality; I love doing things by myself and getting to enjoy every little bit of an experience (like fine dining) without having to entertain someone every second. I've gotten weird looks from people when I've dined alone at very high-end restaurants. Whatever, totally their problem! I'm enjoying myself like you did! Every person-man, woman, whatever-should embrace being alone once in a while and do things alone for themselves, like eat, travel, etc.
I know it can be an awkward feeling and I was apprehensive to do it at first, but at the end of the day, every restaurant strives to give their customers a great experience whether they're in a group or by themselves. It's definitely worth it.
When I worked on wall street, prior to everyone getting canned due to the "financial crisis", we had a tradition of dining out once a month at the finest restaurants in NYC and I will state without a doubt that it was one of the highlights of my life. Couldn't agree more! I have no problems dining alone, but I know there are still many people who do and I wanted to reiterate that point. That's incredible that you got to experience Per Se. I think they just completed a renovation. Hopefully, I'll be able to visit that restaurant sometime, but it probably won't be for awhile. After Le Bernardin, I've got to build up my bank account back.

One of the greatest pleasures of my professional life was winning a competition at the CIA (1st place Chowder Cookoff) with the reward being a weekend stage at Le Bernadin! I had already committed to a full time job in Boston upon graduation, but if I hadn't I likely would have gone back to LBD permanently. Thanks, James. I enjoyed a look in side Le Bernardin. I'm surprised the menu is that big. I've spent more than that on an unexpected car repair and had the opposite of a great experience so don't feel guilty about planning to do something special!
Yeah, I typically don't see fine dining restaurants have menus that are even half the size of Le Bernardin. Exactly! Every once in a while one needs to just forget about the cost and embrace the experience.
Wow James! That video was epic. As a foodie, I was just astonished at the menu , presentation and extra surprises Le Bernadin offer to make each guest feel welcomed. ( I loved the story of the guest who got up during a meal and how the staff rushed to cover the plate of food) There are some important lessons here in your video - Always say yes to a great opportunity when life presents it , Don't be afraid of dining alone and enjoy your own company , some experiences are priceless and deserve a splurge! Great video and lessons here my friend. 🙏🏼 - Now I want try that Brioche and side potato that accompanied the fish !
Thank you so much and thank you for the kind words! Yeah, the service at the restaurant was phenomenal! I felt like they could deal with whatever request or happening in the dining room. Indeed, that one potato bite was incredible and that brioche was very satisfying!
That dinner looked amazing. Thank you for sharing the experience I’ve seen Eric on different cooking shows. Really cool to see the dishes he’s created.
Love that you enjoy your experiences by yourself! I've been to Le Bernardin and Per Se by myself and totally enjoyed both experiences! Like you said, LIFE IS SHORT!!! Going to Daniel next month for my solo-treat myself dinner. You should try Per Se as well. I think that's my fave restaurant of all time. However, it is a bit more expensive than LB. I saved my pennies to go there, and was blown away!
Great segment James. I am glad you so thoroughly enjoyed yourself at this fine establishment. I have dined there a few times through the years and the experience has always been extraordinary. I may be mistaken but Le Bernardin usually is listed as one of the top 3 restaurants in Manhattan year in year out. Keep up the great work James!
Thank you! Indeed! It's definitely listed as one of the best restaurants in NYC. I'm glad that you've also enjoyed some great experiences at the establishment.
@@Jamesnu You have a great channel and excellent delivery style James. I wish you continued success as you build on your platform. Have a great rest of the weekend
Had this very meal Christmas of ‘22. The service was spectacular, as should be expected and and the food simply perfection. The cost is incidental when one is surrounded by greatness.
James, this was the first video of yours that I’ve seen, and what a treat! As a lifelong New Yorker, Le Bernadin has been on my “someday” list as well. For awhile, friends of mine and I would do a Michelin star restaurant every month, which was a wonderful experience, but the group broke up before we got to Le Bernadin. Thank you for putting it back in might sightline And to becoming a new subscriber! I’m looking forward to other videos of yours.
Thank you so much! That sounded like a great group. It's hard to find people that really appreciate fine dining especially with the high prices those restaurants command. That's partly why I eat at most of these fancy places alone, but I have no problem with that. Indeed, Le Bernardin is a very special place!
@@Jamesnu You have a talent for talking about your food experiences! I'm a new subscriber because of your presentation and his background information you discussed! ❤ One thing to note, the breads should never be bitten into; instead, break off a mouth-sized piece and then butter it. This is really helpful when eating a hard roll or baguette. It stops you from yanking and pulling on the bread with your teeth. Small bites are better than big, wide open mouth bites of any food. This is a more refined manner of eating bread at restaurants. Your video: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟♥️🎉🎉🎉
This has to be one of the best videos you have ever done. So glad you did this. Amazing restaurant. Wow. Talk about the creme de la creme. The food looked amazing. The service too. The environment. Classy! Loved all the wood in the ceiling areas. I also agree so much with what you said towards the end. Go out there and experience things. See the world. Even by yourself. It’s ok. You really don’t have to be with someone to enjoy it. Unless you are one of those types that are sensitive and can’t be alone. I’m not that way. No. I’ve lived in other countries alone. Traveled alone. All of it has been great! So glad I did. Keep up the good work. Thanks for this video. A very special one! 👍🍷🍸🥂
When I went here the thing that stood out the most was the service. The waiters moved so quickly yet smoothly, like ghostly ballerinas. At one point they replaced the butter dish and neither I, nor my friend noticed. We were both genuinely shocked when we lifted up the cloche expecting to see half eaten butter, but to find it has been replaced with a new one. The food was obviously excellent too. The highlight was a lobster in a lemongrass broth, so delicate and clean.
Great video! Thanks for not being obnoxious in any way and not overly gushing (as I have seen from others) but rather honest and genuine. Love that you enjoyed it so much, too! I hope it won't be the last of your top fine dining experiences 😉 it was getting emotional towards the end...I agree, it's nice to go with others but sometimes things don't always work out like that but that shouldn't stop you from seizing the opportunity when it appears. If you ever find yourself in London, Core by Clare Smyth is outstanding.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the nice words! I definitely have more top tier fine dining restaurants to go to in the future. Indeed! I've heard of Core and I really want to visit someday!
@Jamesnu I'm bbqing up a new York strip with a twice baked potato with broccolini tonite. I love to cook. The restaurant experience has gone downhill for me the past 3 yrs.

I hope that you get to go there someday! Thanks for watching! Yep, every course I received new silverware. The dishwashers at the restaurant really have to be working pretty hard!
How did you find room for all that bread ?!!! Beautiful video, James. I just now subscribed to your channel. Mr Ripert is one of Nature's gentlemen. I loved seeing him on TV in Australia with his late dear friend Anthony Bourdain. These masters of the culinary arts do more than feed our stomachs. They feed our minds. Thank you for the video James. I hope you win Powerball so you can feast to your heart's content !
Thank you! Yeah, Eric Ripert is a great guy and if I do strike it rich one day, most of that money will go towards food. Luckily the bread was pretty light, but I also have a big appetite.
I just wanted to mention that the bread that you called a brioche looked a lot like a croissant. I wonder why you didn't tell them that the one yellow sauce wasn't your favorite? The desert looks like a child 's after- school snack.
I lived in NYC for quite a few years, but am not there now. My last trip there, I walked down from the hotel near Central Park South to meet friends at the Grand Central Oyster Bar. I stopped in Le Bernardin to look at the menu. As I was going through it, a couple came in and said to the Maître d' that they were there for the (famous) architect, César Pelli's 80th birthday. What a great choice to treat this famous man!
James, you have made a new subscriber. Your review was terrific and your comments totally on point. I haven’t been to Le Bernardin in 20 years but plan to head back soon because of your detailed video. As another commenter mentioned, your passion for good food, respect and humility make a an enjoyable viewing experience. Thank you.
I have eaten several times at Le Bernardin over the years and this review certainly reflects my own experiences. One of the best parts of the experience, however, is that a single diner is treated exactly the same by the staff as larger tables. This is a very special quality in great restaurants and not shared by some of them.
I've been to La Bernardin twice for their pre-theater prix fixe. They take notes on your visit and ask if you'd like the same cocktail you had when you were there before! My favorite dish was the sea urchin served in its spiny shell! The whole experience is spectacular!
As a fellow foodie and Epicurean, all l can say is l love your humble, earnest, direct videos and how you savor each unique restaurant you try..well done all around my friend👌
I would be highly perplexed if a waiter unexpectedly placed a dessert in an egg shell in front of me, but you handled it as if it happened to you all the time. I'm glad you enjoyed the experience!

Thank you so much! That makes me happy to hear because I really worked hard on this one. The restaurant is definitely a must-visit! Indeed, there's nothing wrong with eating alone.
You need to change your mindset FAST! You have to get creative. For example, my dad and I shared a United Visa card many many years ago and it took three years before we had enough miles to fly to Australia for free. He told me to literally pay for everything, even a pack of gum, with that card. If you really want to have an experience, like going to this restaurant, you need to start saving, every single day, until you meet your goal. Good luck!

Thanks for watching!
Fair play James. You are correct, life is too short! Experience's like this are what you remember, not where you bought something.
Absolutely! I'd choose a good experience over material possessions any day!
Amazing video. Happy it’s been watched so many times because it’s well deserved.
Thank you!
So glad you got to enjoy such an amazing experience. Looked absolutely amazing!
Thank you! It was incredible!
I'm so grateful for your accomplishment. Wishing you more prosperity.
Thank you so much!
Fantastic! I hope you enjoy Daniel! Yeah, I really want to go to Per Se, but like you said, I'll have to save up for that one.
Thanks for sharing this video. Le Bernardin is on my bucket list. Love your videos!
Thanks for watching! I hope that you get the chance to go there. It's an amazing restaurant.
Wonderful video once again James… thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching!
Another great video! I love that you are showcasing more Michelin restaurants.
Thank you! Yeah, Michelin star restaurants are probably my favorite type of restaurants to go to.
@@kevin7151 Thank you! I really appreciate it! Have a great weekend as well!
Had this very meal Christmas of ‘22. The service was spectacular, as should be expected and and the food simply perfection. The cost is incidental when one is surrounded by greatness.
Nice! Yeah, one is really paying for a very memorable dining experience.
@@Jamesnu
You have a talent for talking about your food experiences! I'm a new subscriber because of your presentation and his background information you discussed! ❤
One thing to note, the breads should never be bitten into; instead, break off a mouth-sized piece and then butter it.
@@tomvalveede6808 Thank you so much! I really appreciate the support and suggestions!
@@Jamesnuplus, you can stack more butter on each bite. Yum!
Thank you so much! Yeah, I definitely put a lot of effort into this one since it was such a special restaurant and experience!
I know exactly what you mean! That was some of the best service that I've ever experienced in a restaurant.
Did the butter taste like butter?
@@briangleason5597no..but the schnozberrys tasted like schnozberrys
Very well filmed. Love the way you take a bite it works. Reminds me a little of the being fed scene in A Clockwork Orange.
@@oscarnmhaffmans Thank you!
I really like your attitude and enthusiasm. I like the blend of history and your personal experience. Lovely restaurant guide.
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
Every time I eat a $1.50 hotdog at costco....I think of you. 😅
Haha! That's certainly a legendary dish!
@Jamesnu I'm bbqing up a new York strip with a twice baked potato with broccolini tonite. I love to cook. The restaurant experience has gone downhill for me the past 3 yrs.
@@TimmyCramer That sounds like a great dinner and cooking one's own meal can be very rewarding! I'm unfortunately a very bad cook so I love going to restaurants, Haha!
$0.70 IKEA’s hot dog beats that 😂
I eat 0.2 dollar bun
What an experience. This is on my bucket list. The bonus dish looked so good. Great review
Thank you so much! Yeah, that was a really nice special course. I hope you get to dine there someday.
Big fan of your channel. I’m sure you’ve been asked before, but do you have any ambitions to try Per Se anytime soon?
Thank you! I really appreciate it! Absolutely! I said to myself, when I cross 20k subscribers, that I would go to another 3 Michelin Starred restaurant and Per Se is one of the likely places that I would dine at.
@@Jamesnu Excellent! I’m a concierge in New York at a pretty well-known hotel. Your videos are a fantastic source for me to vicariously experience restaurants that I’m not able to try, but are of high value to my guests. I appreciate all you do, and I’ll do my best to push you past that 20k mark.
@@Im12nWhatIsThis Thank you so much! I really appreciate the support!
I love this video. It's nice to see someone who can just about afford it go as a special treat and enjoy it so much.
Thank you! I think because of how costly it was for me that I appreciated the experience even more.
yeah, this was definitely the best one so far. Now you got me really wanting to take a trip to ny.
Thank you! I really put a lot of effort into this one.
I really enjoy your videos. I think the filming without talking and a pre and post wrap up is the best way to go.
Thank you so much! I mostly film my videos that way so that I can enjoy the food without disturbing others.
@@Jamesnu It's considerate to others, which I think is the best way to go. You are also very expressive. Again, just good solid food experiences that you give to all of us.
You strike a wonderful balance in your reviews, James.
Thank you!
one of the best channel right now
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
I have always dreamed of dining there! Thanks for allowing me to tag along! I would have to brush up on my fine dining etiquette though. Do they switch out the silverware with each course? Such a lovely experience. Thank you!
I hope that you get to go there someday! Thanks for watching! Yep, every course I received new silverware. The dishwashers at the restaurant really have to be working pretty hard!
One meal i will always remember is the tacos i bought from a guy in a station wagon. Yep never going to forget that.
Nice!
Ewww😂😂😂
James, there are so many great restaurants throughout the big apple!
Absolutely!
“Life is too short to say .. someday’” that’s a good one to live by for sure
Indeed! One should take full advantage of life.
This looked so expensive and delicious! 😊 loved the honesty &background music 🎵. We shouldn’t wait for the right person :)
I agree! Thank you for the kind words!
I assume that the intermittent breads supplied is part of a strategy to compensate for small portions of the feature dishes so that you feel sated?
Probably. I always make sure to get a good amount of bread at places like this for that very reason. Plus, it was very good bread.
Perhaps, but bread is a supplement but it seems too dominant at times.
@@michaelbenenson I know what you mean.
That meal was a story, thanks for sharing it with us!
Indeed! Thanks for watching!
Goodness. I’m salivating here. I’m definitely going there next time I’m in NYC
It's definitely a great restaurant! I hope that you enjoy it!
Great Place !! Thank you for the content
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing the great experience! Hopefully soon I will manage to get the same great dinner.
Thanks for watching! I hope that you get the chance to try it!
@@joanlynch5271 Yeah, the brioche definitely was flakey like a croissant, but still bread like.
There is always room for bread! However it annoyed me that he doesn't know the difference between brioche and a croissant.
Indeed! Le Bernardin is a great place to have a celebration!
Thank you.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind words! I hope your next visit to Le Bernardin is a great one!
I have eaten several times at Le Bernardin over the years and this review certainly reflects my own experiences. One of the best parts of the experience, however, is that a single diner is treated exactly the same by the staff as larger tables. This is a very special quality in great restaurants and not shared by some of them.
Indeed! The attention to the customer at this restaurant is really top-notch.
I await every new review and this was amazing thank you
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!

You forgot about the 9th corse, the shake shack burger you got on your way home to fill you up. Lol

I've been to La Bernardin twice for their pre-theater prix fixe. They take notes on your visit and ask if you'd like the same cocktail you had when you were there before! My favorite dish was the sea urchin served in its spiny shell! The whole experience is spectacular!
Nice! Yeah, that's definitely the mark of a great restaurant!

I have been enjoying your reviews since I discovered your channel about a month ago. I think this is your best one yet! I travel to NYC often and I have been wanting to go to this restaurant for some time, now I have to make it happen. No shame in eating by yourself, I do it all the time! 😅
Thank you so much! That makes me happy to hear because I really worked hard on this one. The restaurant is definitely a must-visit! Indeed, there's nothing wrong with eating alone.
As John LeCarrè put it in one of his spy novels " Smiley dined in imperial solitude. " Besides I definitely would want to focus on the mwal.

I don't know why I torture myself watching these videos. I'll never be able to afford a trip to a place like this, no matter how much I may want to.
Never say never! I really hope that you get the chance to dine at a place like this.
Good luck!
Thank you for sharing in such great detail. I am now craving butter with a side of bread.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, that butter was amazing!
