Bought a '57 Navara (92k) last year as a farm runaround - has been very good so far. Gets used several times a days - even does the odd long motorway journey. Interestingly I've had the same issue with the driver's door only opening from the outside. Found that the same locks have been used front and back and the child lock had slipped on. The lock can be accessed (without removing the door card) by removing the 3 bolts along the door edge and pivoting the lock until you can flick the child lock off with a screwdriver. A more permanent fix might be to put a self-tapper in there to stop it slipping again.

It’s less about the general population, more to remind us to check on our elderly relatives and neighbours. A bottle of water can be the difference between life and death.
people who are relatively young can definitely cope with the heat more easily, I guess most of the deaths caused by the heatwave are elderly people or people with health conditions that make them more vulnerable to the higher temperatures. I've never experienced temperatures north of 30C myself, but I'm sure It's no joke if you don't have AC or can't go to the beach.
I started buying cars again with my partner. Forgot some advice now we have 6 cars and my neighbours think I'm a car dealer. However 3 series convertibles at this time of year have been brilliant.
Indeed, I used to work in a Nissan body shop and the recall was a joke, if there wasn't any holes in the chassis it was just a case of cleaning it and painting over all the surface rust, thus not actually preventing it. I wouldn't touch one of these trucks
If this goes to raffle.. I'm in! There has always been something about the Navara that catches your eye Nissan done well with the design (in terms of looks.. not chassis structure 😂)

I bought a brand new 'Aventura' spec D40 Navara in 2007 (at a cost of around £27K) In 2016 i was contacted By Nissan and it was suggested to me, that I not drive it any more, until the chassis has been checked for corrosion/failings (but it was my only daily transport) whilst in that 6-month queue for its inspection 'job', the timing belt broke and destroyed the engine beyond financial repair - the mileage was only 127,000 The cost of an engine fix/replacement . . . and the impending chassis issues meant it was better for me to sell it as is, and as a non-runner. In 2018, i sold it for £4,250 as, a spares or repairs The body & interior were in awesome condition (and it had a cherished plate too, which i let go as well (R10 PRO) Overall with the whole Navara ownership experience, was disappointing - despite it always being serviced on time, driven considerately, spent extra £'s on, and really a 'pampered' family car . . . . and in 'Mint' condition with lots of extras inc a £2.5K+ 'Armadillo' bed roll-top Nissan treated me like shit - every day after i paid hem for the Pickup, many, many times and always screwed up & let me down - and for that reason i would NEVER buy another Nissan - or advise anyone else to. We have weather warnings here in the Netherlands which usually mean nothing. But today its nearing 40c so i think i'll just stay indoors. Btw once worked in Kuwait with temperatues above 50c and no airco, now that's warm .
Nice truck apart from the rear quarter as you said. Heard the rattle as soon as you started it. You got lucky with the new quarter in the back. Once it's all fixed someone will get a good truck no doubt.
The plate is a gem. Pickwick? I'd contact businesses with Pickwick in their name and I'd ask more than 500. The scuff will buff out with a bit of t-cut and elbow grease? A 4 seat cab with auto. That is a lot of ute for the money even with the scrape. I would take the plate off, tidy it up a little, do a cheap fix to the body, and flog it on for a small profit plus the pure profit from the plate. A definite probable profit. Or a very handy scruffy practical 4WD for the tip and winter? You can't lose.
Because a pickup has the silly concept of being a tupperware with an engine and no cover. If you don't want something to be stolen or rained on, it has to go inside. (even with one of these covers...)

The abs light been on means the abs won't be working, so if you brake hard the wheel will lock and skid. Alot of my cars had the abs light on, never effects the way it drives or feels. Just remember old fashion precision braking, or whatever it was called.
@@iainnorquay5371 only a few of them did that. Mostly the ones living in the north and did a lot of towing. My 2012 is perfectly fine, but it spent its life down in the south and never towed anything. There was indeed an issue with the rust on some of them, leading to the potential total failure that you mentioned. But Nissan did a full recall on all of them and fixed the problem, when it needed fixing, or bought them back, if it could not be fixed. Many, like mine, just had another layer of rust protection. Some got sent back to Spain for more extensive surgery.
Good luck taking it to the tip at Bredbury, Stalybridge etc. I've got a L200 which I use for non-business use. I need a permit to show when going to the tip (apply online) and I can only go eighteen times a year at their discretion depending what waste you're tipping. Navara snapped chassis syndrome! Mine was a 2006, served us well. Great vehicle until a fateful MOT in about 2016 where significant corrosion was picked up and rot in the rear section of the chassis frame. Close to snapping. Nissan only informed us after our 10 warranty had expired and which was kind of them. Bought a reinforcing kit that a similar navara owner had designed. Faced with losing the truck completely i.e. a write off, a mate and I took the tub off and he painstakingly, removed bad and re-welded attaching this kit. Then passed an MOT. Sent it through a well known car purchasing brand eventually. Few other spurious issues too, off the road now I believe.
Good buy if you can deal with a few things falling off. My friend has a minivan and he picked me up to go somewhere. I get in and shut the door, we heard something... it was the logo on the driveway that fell. My friend said the plastic assembly on the mirror also fell off. It was well maintained.
Ones like this would deffo be worthy of a follow-up. I know that's wandering off of what you normally do (time to record, edit etc), but the odd interesting one that needs some work might be good to see a follow up video on - not everything, as that's another full time job !

4 years ago we bought a cheap Golf 3 convertible with a accident behind the drivers door, it looked like the one at the pickup and I thought to myself "oh well, I can have that repaired, it probably won't be that expensive". I then sold the car again after 2 years because it wouldn't have been worth it.
In NZ, a 4WD with dents & rust is called a 4WD. 4WDs have mud tyres or at least ATs fitted, they actually go off-road. They may have dog boxes on the back along with a deer or feral pig carcass. Navaras can be real trucks. A 4WD here without dents, dings + imperfections is called a "poser mobile" or a "city poofter truck". They're owned by people in cities, they may tow a family boat but they only go as far off-road as the nature strip outside the owners house. They have 18" alloy wheels, rarely get mud on them and are mainly used for school + tip runs, doing the grocery shop or "pretend rugged guy" duty in the office car park. The Navara can be both. The Mitsui Triton + Toyota Hilux can also be both. A flat deck, mud + dog boxes says "actual 4Wd".. alloy wheels + road tyres say "Nice truck, Deirdre"
I have driven one of these things 1000s km round South America. They are pretty grim to drive in my experience but are tough enough to deal with long distances on awful roads.
This is a rugged pick-up that has been through hell & back! The private number plate should fetch some £499 there or thereabouts 👍 another great video 👏
I wish it was 35, it’s more like 40 today! Why the issue? We aren’t geared up for this heat, air con is normal for countries with heat like this. I have no air on in the car or house
People either love or hate these things. Brought my ‘450’ new in 2010 and 6 years later a exhaust temp sensor went and that’s it. Sold it to my nephew in 2018 and he’s still got it now 4 years later and still no issues. Maybe we got a good one, but I tend to believe it’s more here in NZ they have a Ranger or Hilux mentality. Chassis rust you guys talk about never materialised here either….salt on your roads ?
Find a 2nd tub . Basically remove the fixing bolts and lift the tub off. When the chassis recalls where done , thats what was done for inspector and painting
The thing with these - although a great truck - is that the chassis were manufactured in Spain. The problem with this is that they were created for countries with dry weather in mind. When they came here they found that our wet weather -coupled with copious amounts of salt we throw in the roads in the winter - would corrode the axle very quickly and they would snap......litterally snap. So this would be something I would be checking...
I former colleague of mine, lives near you. Used to love hot weather. Until he was blown up by an IED, which damaged the hypothalamus in his brain. That's the bit that regulates temperature. So, when he gets all 'wussy' and worries about 35+ degrees, it's only because his brain will literally boil... But you're probably right, he should just put a pair of shorts on hey!
I had a D40 & really regret selling it. Common issues on them were.....rear chassis, stretched timing chains & they do like to drop injectors. On the plus side chassis repair kits are cheap, as are replacement duplex timing chain kits & the rear tub is really easy to remove. Second hand rear tubs are cheap too 😉 Mine was a 6 speed manual & also no DPF 😁 They also respond brilliantly to a remap which really wakes the truck up & can help you achieve 30mpg on a run with little effort. I recon you gir a good buy there buddy
I have something to look for that's probably not mentioned on car vertical. The boost control valve can fail causing the boost to be on all the time. This wears the thrust bearing in the turbo.
The ABS faulty could be worn out bearings or sensor cable snaped on nissan but that doesn't affect the breaks or anything so you can still drive without any harm
Definitely a few memorable 'highlights' from that video! As always, top video Matt. Keep them coming and if your local tip is anything like mine, you need to donate a kidney in return for a 3 minute window per decade, if you dare turn up in a pick up!
D40/ D22 tubs are often replaced with trays shortly after purchase in Australia and the near new tubs sold cheap with lights as well. Pity there's 12K miles between you and Queensland otherwise I'd source one for you. Look out for the weak rear leaf springs too, make the Ute look like a dog with worms going along the road.
Judging by some comments from Australia below, it would be a long trip. But the truck would enjoy it’s new life! I noticed this about 10 years ago, and did consider exporting high capacity petrol BMWs to Oz. The values were roughly double 😳
These chew timing chains. Have your workshop check that out if you're holding onto it. I'd say replace the loadbox/bin/tub...whatever it's called in the UK.
Hi Matt, great video I love these cheap gems you keep picking up! On the mileage discrepancy could it be related to the number plate being changed? Does the car vertical check/mot history follow the plate rather than the car? So it’s picking up the history of the vehicle previously registered to the plate? Just a thought!

Anyway, nobody knows more about pickups than Pan, and I asked him which was the best Pickup, expecting him to say Toyota Hilux or Ford/Mazda Ranger, he surprised me by saying Nissan Navara and went on to explain all the reasons why.
yes. it is. :)
Curious to know the reason why. I'm thinking of buying one for farm use it would really help to know its pros & cons
@@boblion4186 Hi bob, it was a few years ago and I can’t really remember all the reasons but he certainly rated the engine, the build quality and the reliability. I’m not sure if Navara in Thailand is the same vehicle as Navara in other markets, I say this because now I am living in Europe and Nissan vehicles here seem to be very different from the Nissan vehicles in Thailand.
@@andrewstones2921 thanks Andrew that's still helpful & a confidence booster
That's a handy thing to keep about, fix the rear end, make sure the chassis isn't made of dust and has been plated, and it's a daily beater for you. They tow quite well too.
Cost a absolute fortune to run and tax do these
Heard about some of these Navarra’s been recalled for rust a few years ago as the structural frame snaps the rear end from the front.
they all got recalled, we [as dealers] had to decide whether it was scrapped, sent back to spain to get chassis nailed back together, or thick underseal put on. a few got kicked out of the claim altogether, those are the dangerous buys...
Love 💕 your comment? Looks as though been driving through jurrasik park ? Keep these comments acoming hilarious 😂😆 Thanks for sharing .
I think I would look at sourcing a whole used rear tub, with the damage to one side and the rust on the other be easier to make a good job replacing the whole thing. Might even get lucky and find one in the correct colour.
Lovin' your work, keep it up!
Get real, it's a cheap 🐖 no point spending loads on it, as it will then just be an expensive 🐖
@@Storm.Z.4u seems decent apart from the damage, £4-500 for a replacement would still leave some room for profit, at the moment probably only worth what he paid for it.
The best vehicle I’ve ever had. Loved my navara double cab.
It’s probably an adventura edition not techna. I Had the full canopy on the back in drug dealer black. I covered 234k in 7 years still on the same clutch/ engine/ gearbox. Only issues over the time were the electrical gremlins, sat nav faults air bag warning light , 👍👍👍
Best you've ever had, speaks volumes about the other vehicles you've had.
@@Storm.Z.4u yes it does B. I’ve not been blessed with huge pool to choose from as a works vehicle, but against the Mitsubishi l200 the first edition of the Ford ranger, it was head and shoulders above the rest. And with no benefit in kind to the tax man it’s still a commercial vehicle no added cost to me, so why wouldn’t I love a 4x4 with leather , sat nav , a/c heated seats ect ect kids and family all fit in great for European holiday trips room in the rear pickup compartment and not pay for the weekend diesel , win win I’d say.
@@keithmyerscough9900 You can buy yourself a car you know, you don't have to rely on the charity of others.
@@Storm.Z.4u give your head a shake. Company vehicles goes with a lot of professional trades. Perks of the job. Just I’m not Mondeo man.
Definitely one ripe for the boys at Salvage Rebuilds UK, they love a commercial vehicle that can be restored for a few quid. I can just see Rob seeing the free panel in the back and saying "what a result!". Is this one for a North and South collaboration??? Essex and Lancashire come together to restore a mighty Nissan pickup to its former glory? Well okay, the sun has been very hot today, perhaps I need a sleep....
Kent
Essex ? No my friend, they are in Kent and, one of the best channels on TH-cam.
Rocking the Jedward look 👍
Matt don't you ever stop you are renovating a house plus your car business and blogs ! You make me smile 😃 ! But fair play !!
I had two of these new when they first come out , In 2005 I had a 55 plate outlaw and then a couple of year after upgraded to the spec Adventura , they was the GTI of pickups when they first came out , think I still have a video on my channel of mine doing near 130mph when new , I found Nissan terrible for customer service for warranty work ,put me off for life tbf , but the D40 wasn't a bad truck overall .
While I understand where you’re coming from, for our elderly cooped up in 50s,60s,70s built houses that are designed to retain heat rather than disperse it, and the fact most don’t have air conditioning is what gives this heatwave it’s risk to life, it really only matters to the health and social care sector.
Lighten up, it was a throw away remark, its a car video not "social care today"!!
Folk have gone soft...
I started buying cars again with my partner. Forgot some advice now we have 6 cars and my neighbours think I'm a car dealer. However 3 series convertibles at this time of year have been brilliant.
Change the rear bed over. Plenty on the Web. Also don't forget about the chassis as they had real bad rust issues.
Indeed, I used to work in a Nissan body shop and the recall was a joke, if there wasn't any holes in the chassis it was just a case of cleaning it and painting over all the surface rust, thus not actually preventing it. I wouldn't touch one of these trucks
Hi Justin I've just bought a 2011 Tekna . Should I be concerned about chassis ?
If this goes to raffle.. I'm in! There has always been something about the Navara that catches your eye Nissan done well with the design (in terms of looks.. not chassis structure 😂)
Your idea for using it as a tip and general runaround is the best idea then when your done and plate is sold you will still make a profit.
That Navara will last longer than the Range Rover.
I think you did well with the pickup can't say the same about the new hair do🤣🤣
I had a good experience with my last D40 and watching your video of the interior reminds me of how many practical features got missed out when they moved to the NP300. My NP300 is a great driver though and will give me almost 50mpg on the motorway but I - like many others - do miss the rugged, agricultural, Tonka toy that was the D40.
I've been holding on to my D40 Navara as long as I can but it is getting costly now. I have the 3.0L Outlaw model - such a vastly underestimated truck.
@@Rroff2 Decent power and a 7 speed box. Just add a DAB radio and I would say that would be the perfect truck - they are still fetching £15k with low miles. If they weren't so expensive I would love to run a cheap commuter and have an outlaw as a lifestyle vehicle.
@@jjs3287 That is what I'm doing now with the high fuel prices - but the Outlaw is starting to get costly - just had to drop a grand on replacing intercooler and some other bits to keep it running and is going to need chassis treatment to last longer term.
They are such great trucks though when in good running order.
I bought a brand new 'Aventura' spec D40 Navara in 2007 (at a cost of around £27K)
In 2016 i was contacted By Nissan and it was suggested to me, that I not drive it any more, until the chassis has been checked for corrosion/failings (but it was my only daily transport) whilst in that 6-month queue for its inspection 'job', the timing belt broke and destroyed the engine beyond financial repair - the mileage was only 127,000
The cost of an engine fix/replacement . . . and the impending chassis issues meant it was better for me to sell it as is, and as a non-runner.
In 2018, i sold it for £4,250 as, a spares or repairs
The body & interior were in awesome condition (and it had a cherished plate too, which i let go as well (R10 PRO)
Overall with the whole Navara ownership experience, was disappointing - despite it always being serviced on time, driven considerately, spent extra £'s on, and really a 'pampered' family car . . . . and in 'Mint' condition with lots of extras inc a £2.5K+ 'Armadillo' bed roll-top
Nissan treated me like shit - every day after i paid hem for the Pickup, many, many times and always screwed up & let me down - and for that reason i would NEVER buy another Nissan - or advise anyone else to.
Nice Job Nissan service for ruining the ownership experience of an 'Okay-good' car
Dude you should really consider doing a under £5, £10, £15 grand series. Ie great cars for under £10 k etc. Keep up the great content dude. 👍🏻
Have a friend who before retirement used to sell old 4x4 to a chap from Kenya, an old dog over here was luxury motoring for them.
"it's Japanese" lol.....I doubt much of that vehicle ever saw the land of the rising sun. Glad you added in about the cracking chassis problems....
You want another one? 2012 king cab. South based. Went in for chassis check.
My one is also 2006. Had her from new. Been a absolutely brilliant vehicle. Service each year and no other parts replaced except battery and tyres.
What's the mileage now? You should consider changing the timing chain though.
I wish you would keep doing the “few weeks later” and show us the finished article and what you made from the sale. Good video tho.
William Charles Kilroy who owns a p1 mclaren will take that plate. You might get more than you think. Best of luck chap. Love the videos.
Don’t suppose you’ve got his number? 😂
May I wonder why the previous owner sticked that rear left quarter into the cabin of... pickup!!!
I'm thinking the previous owner doesn't have the key to the trunk either!!
Because a pickup has the silly concept of being a tupperware with an engine and no cover. If you don't want something to be stolen or rained on, it has to go inside. (even with one of these covers...)
That spec was called the 'Aventura' in the mid-2000's, not the Tekna
You’re right
Hello Matt , another excellent video.
Well said about death warnings re the hot weather.
I was born in 1966
1976 was hot, we just got on with it!!!
Thank you for taking the time to upload another video. Ged
Another marvellous video Matt. I do enjoy these pop,up “I bought another lump of ****” very watchable 👌👏
The door handles look the same as in the Qashqai well known for breaking, cost about £12 for a pair!!! takes about ten mins to change both.
The abs light been on means the abs won't be working, so if you brake hard the wheel will lock and skid. Alot of my cars had the abs light on, never effects the way it drives or feels. Just remember old fashion precision braking, or whatever it was called.
As long as the chassis recall has been done, should be a good fixer upper for someone 👍👍
You beat me too it. Friend of mine had one of those, they have a habit of snapping in half.
Did come read about this issue when I was considering buying one. But never did in the end.
The Mitsubishi L200 would bend and split too
Good luck taking it to the tip at Bredbury, Stalybridge etc. I've got a L200 which I use for non-business use. I need a permit to show when going to the tip (apply online) and I can only go eighteen times a year at their discretion depending what waste you're tipping. If the pick up is registered in your business capacity they probably will turn you away mate.
Pre 2010 Navara the chassis rotted through behind cab some rotted in half omg. Nissan bought loads back to support the brand... Good luck.
Don't forget pick up trucks are usually considered as commercial vehicles, so tip runs might need a permit! Excellent video though.
The crazy rays from that 37* UK sunshine make your hair look strawberry blonde, amazing!😉😁
Hopefully the chassis isn't rotten and splits in half, can't believe the Mercedes X-Class was once a thing based on one of these, especially when the G-Wagon still around.
Chassis issue is on the d40. X class was based on the newer version which did not have the rust problem.
@@theseb1979
Thanks for clarification 👍
@@theseb1979 the new one is built on the same production line. the first of the new d23 chassis had EXACTLY the same problem, so they turn the chassis upside down + run it through the paint a second time, to try not to miss the vital area behind the cab
d23 full of french bits, so dealer visit every 3k miles to change oil/carry out regen/renew sensors/reprogram ECU. mercedes pulled plug first, now nissan has given up, vive la france! [nissan hi-tec]
Check with your local tip, ours don't let pick-ups or vans in.....
Can't be the only one triggered by that panel being on the seats when there is a massive tub at the back to put it in
It doesn’t fit in the back. I’ve since tried.
I like the little rants and social commentary 🤭 It's summer and the government isn't doing anything about it!
😂
I guess it is different in the UK. How on earth can a plate be worth anything? Can you explain?
You can pick a bed up for those pretty cheap nowadays, I'd change the bed and punt it on...
love the new " Hair Do " Matt i guess we,ll be seeing you hanging around Canal st in the village .... PLEASE ONLY JOKING
I wish it was 35, it’s more like 40 today! Why the issue? We aren’t geared up for this heat, air con is normal for countries with heat like this. I have no air on in the car or house
coming home from kent to sunderland on monday, 41c on the dash at cambridge area, regassed AC before coming down, best £60 i ever spent...
Won't last the good weather. Don't forget when I lived in Stockport mostly rained..I like the other car parked near the navarra
Navaras are massive rust buckets before the dings.
That engine is also a massive ticking time bomb if you ain't done the uprated timing chain upgrade.
Chassis rust you guys talk about never materialised here either….salt on your roads ?
cowshit on the farms were the first ones to snap
So much about the Navara but so little about the funky hair! Either way, great video as usual.
Another great video, can't wait to see what you've done with it ....also the pack horse pub is lovely the food is amazing 😁
Find a 2nd tub . Basically remove the fixing bolts and lift the tub off.
When the chassis recalls where done , thats what was done for inspector and painting
This is the easy way to deal with the problem....
Yeah he's going to have to do that , doubt he'd make any profit on it if he does do that
That number plate would probably sell well in Prestwick, Scotland!
Ronan Keating test driving a truck. 😉👍
One thing you have to look in these is has it had the chassis strengthening maintenance done between the cab and rear bed...
Follow-up video please! Would be really interested to see how you turn this around and for how much
I former colleague of mine, lives near you.
Second hand rear tubs are cheap too 😉
Mine was a 6 speed manual & also no DPF 😁 They also respond brilliantly to a remap which really wakes the truck up & can help you achieve 30mpg on a run with little effort.
Look out for the weak rear leaf springs too, make the Ute look like a dog with worms going along the road.
not really a problem in UK, but we put less tinnees in the back when we go to a barbie...
With that number plate, you could sell that truck to a member of the Charles Dickens Appreciation Society - Pickwick.
Alsoo great content Matt. Looking forward for a 2nd video of the Navara
Thanks again for the upload hope u and the family is all well
You can get two used rear panels from ebay or any scrap yard and slap them on, service, clean up... it will be good to go👍🏻 it's a good vehicle
Have you noticed the number plate Piwck (Pickwick), from Charles Dickens - anyone with the surname of Weller or Pickwick may pay a premium for it.
You are correct Tom. Same issue happened with my car with plates transferred from one car to the other.
My dad had one of those new in 2006 i absolutely loved it. I thought it was the best thing ever. It was constantly broken down though.
2018 I bought brand new Navara,,I didn't even get tow bar fitted. Biggest and only thing I placed in back was a Christmas tree. Pointless unless your farmer or builder etc. I ended up off loading it at massive loss. Lesson learned. Never again.
