Still one of the most entertaining regular season games I remember watching. I must have been 10 years old. What a great era that was for football.

It's always been a mystery to me why the NFL Network doesn't air more of the classic games like this one, or tries to do more interesting programming. The Football Life series is great, but too often, we have endless repeats of top ten lists, and a CNN-style news format approach.

Another classic game the NFL could have aired was the Raiders vs Colts 1977. This was the divisional playoff "ghost to the post" game. The lead changed about 5 times in the 2nd half. I have this game, but the quality isn't all that good.

They did a little bit of that with the Super Tuesday/Friday games last season, all of the pre-2000 games were playoffs or Superbowls though. They obviously assume nobody is interested in regular season games from 30-40 years ago...

There are so many. All the great Cowboys-Redskins, Raiders-Chiefs games they could play to show what made them such rivals. There was a game in the early 80s that happened on Monday night between the Redskins and Packers that one of the top 10 shows made reference to. Thiesmann vs. Lynn Dickey. It was just as much of a QB duel as this was. I would love to see it. And yeah all the classic Monday night games!

I find this remarkable that this football game has been posted in its entirety, as seven years ago the NFL nailed me with a YT copyright claim, that became a YT copyright strike, for a 32 second video footage of a locker room scene at the Indianapolis Colts. What made that copyright claim/strike extraordinary was that short video clip was at the 22 minute mark of a local TV newscast that I posted on my YT channel. How the NFL found that vid clip buried in that half-hour video was a mystery to me.
So, to see a network TV broadcast of a NFL game on YT is extremely remarkable!

Oh, and as far as Air Coryell being "incredible"? During the regular season, yes. In the playoffs against good teams, NO. The Cardinals never won anything with it. The Chargers never won with it.
It's cousins in Buffalo and Houston never won a title, either, although the Bills made 4 straight SBs, thanks to the gimmick offense in Houston. The K-gun and the run and shoot were both by products/off shoots/similar style offenses to Don Coryell's baby.
When great defenses showed up, Air Coryell became the Hindenburg. Oh the humanity!

@@comfortat Former Chargers assistant, Joe Gibbs won SuperBowls with a hybrid form of Air Coryell. Jimmy Johnson, had Norv Turner as his OC and they won SuperBowls running a form of Air Coryell. Today, most teams run a form of Air Coryell...with the 3 receivers on every down. Don Coryell's problem was he never figured out how to control the clock for extended periods by running the ball or throwing short passes that ate time off of the clock.

Still remember the headlines. Air Raid at Candlestick. Next week Chargers would rout Bengals 50-34 on Monday Night. As usual lose in the playoffs to the Dolphins against David Woodley, 44-14. From 79-82, the San Diego Chokers. Eugene Klein giving up on Fred Dean, John Jefferson, Gary big hands Johnson and Louie Kelcher did not help matters much either. Damn Cheapskate!

Give them a break. Look at buffalo. They had a fast break no hudle off. When they went againts Giants,Cowboys those ball control teams took away their flow. In 80s raiders were only AFC team to win. Cause the ran the ball. 49s,skins,bears,giants all just used ball control. I think if Bills Norwood made that kick the bills would have won another. Bill could have sliwed it down and let Thomas do a payton. When your defense is on the field for a 12 play drive. Then get 3minutes off the nfc teams just grounded it out. The best and most balanced offesive team was the 84 49s. They got Wendall Tyler from rams. With the west coast pass to set up run it was scary. Set backs 4 yds from ljne. Quick traps was tylers days at ucla runnig the veer. No rice, taylor, craig was the other back. Scripted 25 playes to start. Montana had the best footwork. 1 2 3 steps ball gone .

The Fred Dean trade handed the SuperBowl to the 49ers and changed the way teams substituted pass rushers in for obvious passing situations. If Jefferson stays in San Diego, he's a first ballot Hall of Famer. Yeah, Klein blew it.

At 25:53-26:12 the NBC graphics show the NFL games on NBC for the following day (12/12/1982) and interestingly one of those games was the Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots. That was a 3-0 victory for the Pats in near blizzard conditions and was the one where the snow plow driver cleared a path for the New England kicker to attempt (and make) the winning field goal late in the fourth quarter.

This was a strike year…The chargers went on the road and beat the Steelers 31-28 with a throw back screen to Winslow! then they went and lost in Miami. This was the year Miami went to Super Bowl against the Redskins and Riggins ran that 4th and 1 off left tackle for a TD to win the game. One more point…Chargers struggles on Defense as we all know but they had the chance to draft Mike Singletary at the bottom of the 81 draft - instead the passed and drafted James Brooks. The rest is history for sure. The NFL is designed to tear down the top teams with the way the draft is organized. Its very hard to stay on top…

I laugh when people say that Brady had so much less help than Montana or others. SF starting RBs in this game were Jeff Moore (who? 12th rd pick?) and Bill Ring (Dick makes the analogy to Rocky Bleier; yeah. a poor poor man's version). The great QB who did the most with the worst cast was Elway in the 80s. He didn't play with any HOFs until Shannon Sharpe. Not one and made 3 SBs
Brady had all those great defenses (Top 3-4 in NFL in those early SB years), very underrated OL and backs, plus HOF K and HC. Giving full credit to Brady for his first 3 is like giving full credit to Kobe for his first 3 rings and forgetting Shaq was there.
BTW Richard, love your games. Wish the league would get head out and leave these up. No one wants to watch stupid Top 10 or Combine all day on NFLN. I love NFL Films but these uploads give real perspective on how the game was played and coached more than the Films HLs. And we need some perspective and history lessons bc frankly most people forget. They think 51 was the best ever and Brady is greatest w/o argument

Definitely the warning days of the Chargers as contenders. After 1982, the Chargers seemed to settle into the role of competitive spoilers (beating the 11-0 1984 Dolphins for example) and being exciting. The 1983-'86 Chargers could beat anybody, but didn't have enough to string together wins anymore.

I'm a Wes Chandler fan as well, and few people remember he finished up his career as a 49er. After his age 30 season, Chandler's production tailed off, the wear and tear of playing in the NFL can do that to a player. He was also a dangerous kick returner on occasion, as we saw in the 1981 playoff at Miami.

The one thing I remember about this game was the unbelievable catch by WES CHANDLER made in the endzone. Watch the game you will see. Can you imagine if these 2 teams met in the Superbowl. Instead of that crappy ass Cincinnati team that got blown out by montana and company in Superbowl 16 I think. It was played in Detroit. That game called the freeze bowl, at game time it was 31 below, that included the windchill. Charger owner asked NFL Commisioner PETE ROZELLE to have the game postponed or played in a dome stadium. Obviously it was not. The other thing I heard. Whenever the chargers were on offense, the ground crew would open these huge doors that led to the field. the doors were used to allow people or vehicles to enter the stadium grounds. This caused the wind to be blown in the stadium on the field and Fouts's passes were off target. When Cincinnati was on offense they closed the doors. So Ken Anderson passes were on target. Years later Kellen Winslow admitted, my mind was not on the game but on surviving in this 31 below weather.

Fouts and Montana turned in superb performances during this memorable contest. Fouts' effort was turnover free. Montana threw two intercecptions in the second half in which the latter was made by linebacker Woodrow Lowe guaranteed the Chargers a 41-37 victory. Fouts had the most productive performance. Neither Danny White or Kenny Anderson are in the Hall of Fame, and it's Highly Unlikely that either one ever will be. Dan Fouts is, and will always be in, the Hall of Fame! • @comfortat
      @comfortat ปีที่แล้ว

@@jaydaire139 Because he doesn't belong in the HOF, that's how. He put up guady numbers, but never won a big game when they needed him.
Danny had to wait 4 years for Staubach to retire to even get a shot. Fouts played from day one. Fouts is a bottom tier HOFer, at best. He threw 254 TDs and 242 INTs (51.2%). He led the league in Comp% once, TDs twice, and yardage 4 times. He was a good QB.
His teams had 6 winning records in his 15 year career.
He threw more TDs than INTs 7 of his 15 years (more than half the time he didn't), and never threw twice as many TDs than INTs.
He won 3 - THREE - playoff games in 15 seasons.
He never got to the SB.
Weak sauce, if you ask me.
Danny threw more TDs than INTs in 6 of his 8 years as a starter, 155-132 total (54.0%) He led his team to 3 straight NFC Championships, and filling in when Staubach got hurt, led a come from behind playoff victory. Danny's teams made the playoffs 6 out of 8 years. I'm not saying Danny is better, but Fouts' numbers are not as good, they're just MORE. OH... and White was a great punter, and a good runner. Fouts was a statue. White's lifetime QBR 81.7, Fouts 80.2.
Kenny Anderson? QBR 81.9, 197/160 TD/INT (55.1) Won an MVP, led his team to the SB, beating Foutsy. He threw more TDs than INTs 7 out of his 13 years as a starter. He led the NFL in passer rating FOUR TIMES, Fouts never did. Kenny's teams made the playoffs 4 times, winning two games, the same as Fouts.
      Intangibles?
Fouts rushed for 476 yds, a 2.1 avg, and 13 TDs, 6 pro bowls
Danny 482, 3.0, 8 TDs and caught 3 passes for 2 TDs. made one pro bowl, was a very good punter, and has a SB ring
Anderson 2,220 yds, 5.6 avg, 20 TDs, 4 pro bowls, and beat Fouts head to head to go to the SB, and came close to winning it.
I don't know why Fouts is in the HOF. He threw a lot more, less efficiently, than these guys. He had no value other than that.
That's how I can compare these two to Fouts. Stats don't lie, and they don't have opinions. These three are essentially the same, passing wise, but the other two won more, and contributed in more ways.

I'm glad he choked liked a choking dog in every Championship game he ever played in, though. I'm glad the Oilers stomped his ass like the simpering wimp he was - WITHOUT Earl Campbell and Dan Pastorini. Hoooo weeee, did Dan Farts stink up the joint that day. Chargers fans booed him off the field. It was hilarious.
Dan Farts still whines about how cold it was in Cincinnati in '81, when Ken Anderson guided his team up and down the field while the crybaby QB of the Chargers
threw bad pass after bad pass. I bet you were proud of him THAT day, huh? He was a loser.
He's the Dave Kingman of NFL QBs. Or the Adrian Dantley. Guys who performed well in the regular season, but never won a ring because they couldn't handle the heat.
I'm glad your above average QB made the HOF. I'm glad he threw 99 more TDs than Danny White, and 110 more INTs, with a lower QBR and completion %. I'm glad for you that Farts threw 57 more TDs and 82 more INTs than Ken Anderson, along with a lower QBR and completion %. I'm glad he carried the ball 63 more times than Danny, with 24 less yards. I'm glad he gained 1744 less yards on the ground than Ken, and scored 7 fewer TDs. I'm glad because I understand why the Chargers rarely made the playoffs when he was there, thanks to him being an overrated system QB. I'm glad he was a statue who contributed nothing else to his teams, like Danny White did with his excellent punting.
BTW, the Chargers went 86-84-1 during his career, easily the worst W/L % of any HOF QB. Anderson's teams went 91-81. White's teams were 62-30. So Dan Farts, starting 69 more games than Danny White, went 24-44-1 in those games.
I know you're too much of a fanboy to understand stats, but it is CLEAR that Fouts is one of the worst QBs ever elected to the Hall. But Anderson and White shouldn't be in, either. Which is my point. None of them are HOF worthy. They were all damn good QBs, though. It's probably the toughest job in sports.
I noticed you weren't man enough to tell me that I made the case for comparing Fouts to Anderson and White. Instead, you insulted me. Not very mature, sir. But I returned the favor. You are a fanboy who knows nothing about football. Good job! Dan Fouts wasn't as good as these other two. The stats prove it. The wins/losses prove it. The intangibles prove it. The never going to a Super Bowl and always costing your teams important games proves it.
Phillip Rivers and John Hadl were better QBs. So was Humphries for a few years. So is this new kid. I'm glad for you that the 5th best QB in Chargers history bribed his way into the HOF.
      Peace

They had defenses early in the Don Cornell era (1978 &'79 especially, but from that point on that unit began declining), although eventually that side of the ball became too thin to be an asset (1981 was the first year the Chargers defense became a liability).

This game is 35 years old but watching the 49'ers and Chargers is just like watching the NFL today, the only thing that has really changed are the size of the linemen and the allowable contact with receivers downfield.

There is an irony in the Chargers defeating both of the previous years super bowl participant (81) with their 79 season. In 79 the Chargers would defeat the 2 teams that would be in the super bowl that year. The Chargers beat the Rams 40-16 and several weeks later would defeat the defending super bowl champion Steelers 35-7. It is also ironic that of all the Charger teams that went to the post season, Coryell era 79-83, Ross era 92-95, Shottenheimer/Turner era 04-09,. The only one of those teams that made it to the super bowl had far less pro bowl or name recognized players and possessed an offence that was far less potent. Curious indeed.

And Dan Fouts who had the best all around touch passes including the hardest one, the passes to RB on screens and the RBs flat routes when they go to sideline passes to RBs. No one did better then Dan Fouts with his types of throws from hard, soft, easy passes to catch, unless it was J jEFFERSON WHO ALWAYS made those catches away from DBs.. Even thou he is in Dan Fouts a HOFer, he was always under rated despite the media attention to the QBs with the rings...

When football was fun. Played by real men. NO dancing, stupid theatrics. NO dread locks. No preening. Even the commercials were nicer. Compare that to now. The NFL has become excrement. Someone needs to send this tape to William DeVane. He looked great doing those KCar commercials.

somebody educate me . Candlestick Park for around a quarter of a century or more was one of the worst fields to play on . Players always slipping, taking big clods of turf out of the field with their cleats , and so on . It was like the grass in the natural turf never attached its roots into the ground beneath the turf . Does anyone know why ? please, any and all replies !

@@shawnyoung8752 I remember a closeup replay of Biletnikoff vividly . Its was in slo mo. The angle was such you could see Stabler's arm throwing in the foreground and the ball spiraling toward the sideline. All the while Freddie was running circles around this db. last split second Freddie turns towards sidelin a yard away, put his hands out catches ball pushed out of bounds, around a 15 to 20 yard gain. I swear Freddie wasn't even looking. Of course he wasn't a long threat. but in his prime mid 1960s to early 1970s every year defensive backs said he was the hardest guy to cover with all his crazy moves
