The animation in this film is pretty good. Part of me wonders if they intended to use this movie to be a pilot film for a modern-day reboot of the cartoon? Also, Bill is portrayed by Keith Robison who also portrayed Joel Rawlings the Green Ranger on Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue.
Kenan Thompson really gave his all during this movie, and did most of Fat Albert's gang. It's just a shame the writing barely gave them anything to work with. Kenan at least kept this from being as bad as it could've been. Also, Doug's right, the Cosby Jokes pretty much right themselves.
It’s a shame that there is an expectation for actors to do amazing regardless of bad directing/writing and such and if they can’t they are bad. Super weird expectation. Cooks/chefs aren’t expected to make great meals without proper prep of good ingredients. Same here cus if actors aren’t given anything good in writing they’re at a deficit already then throw in upper management and their unwillingness to budge and give actors freedom no shit they can’t save a movie with nothing else going on.
The main problem is that the guys who directed the movie was a fan of the show and because the show has a simple type of humor is difficult to translate it to screen.
It’s amazing how heartfelt this movie can be when it comes to how Fat Albert is related to Doris and how he tries to help her, but it can be really bad in other parts like most of the comedy.

Another Fun Fact: Bill wears a blue sweatshirt depicting a superhero on it, that superhero is The Brown Hornet. He was a cartoon character Fat Albert and his friends watched from their TV at the Junkyard. Each Brown Hornet segment featured a moral lesson that Fat Albert would use later on in every episode. The Brown Hornet segments were added during Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids (1972)'s run from 1979-1984.
Kenan is so funny not only due to his great comedic timing, but also because of how genuinely he has FUN with what he is doing. So many SNL cast members are wooden in their performances and he is always right there, living it and loving it. That feeling of genuine fun is the secret ingredient in all great comedy.

Yeah. It would have been nice if the writers had focused on that angle if the movie a little more. Like maybe have the younger gang meet the older adults that they were based on.

According to an article about the making of the animated segments of the film, the characters from the series had to be redesigned for the movie because the original designs were owned by Filmation's then-rights-holder, Hallmark. The reason Kenan Thompson does so well in SNL is because he's already done, back when he was younger. Remember that Nickolodeon used to have a show called "All That" which was literally just a kids version of SNL.
I'm more tugging my collar at Critic going for the low hanging fruit jokes. Especially after bitching and moaning about this movies jokes not being funny but it's like dude, your material isn't any better here.
Another movie that apparently wasn't well received, but I loved and heard nothing but good things about since I watched it. Albert talking about pushing a woman away from the curb wasn't a joke. It was a callback to a gentlemanly thing to do that's no longer practiced. It's another example of why Lorie falls for Albert; he's extremely caring, even in mundane ways.
@@chasehedges6775 I think the only movies my friend and I remember renting from blockbuster were some of the dbz movies. I mostly used it to rent games. But sometimes I rented movies!
The critics might have torn this movie apart, but I remember on the last day of school in fourth grade back in 2005, my homeroom teacher brought a VHS copy of this to play in class. Now I knew very little about Fat Albert; The cartoon and the movie. But EVERY kid in my class was quoting every line to the point I couldn't hear the movie. And I'm gonna be honest. The scene where the bullies started singing their theme song "Na na na, Gonna have a bad time!" Still makes me laugh to this day.
I grew up with the original Fat Albert cartoon. Cosby was everybody's TV dad. It was SUCH a kick in the balls after we learned what a monster he was. Also, having Jeff Garlin and Aaron Carter in this movie makes it a literal monsters ball.
This is actually the first thing I ever saw of Fat Albert. I didn't know there was an actual old cartoon by that name or what it was about until way later.
I actually attended the premiere of the movie as a kid, since my dad worked with SNL during the time. I told him, "It was sweet but strange..." in fact, I never even heard of the cartoon it was based on when it came out.
You know, Doug should talk about The Wiggles Movie, or Magical Adventure! A Wiggly Movie as it was known in the US next. After all, even though he didn't grow up with them, The Wiggles hold a lot of nostalgic memories for quite a few people.
I have been looking everywhere for the complete Fat Albert series on both Blu-ray and Streaming because I never watched Fat Albert growing up despite being born as a millennial in California during 1985. Not story short this Nostalgia Critic video is one of my favorite videos so far.
1:51 It also helps that he had experience with this even before he was on SNL back when Kenan was a child star on All That and Kenan & Kel on Nickelodeon. It’s because of that experience that he was already in his element on SNL, especially when All That was a sketch comedy like SNL.
4:35 somehow i find it weirder that they adapted the cartoon in this meta way of "they are cartoons coming to real life"... isn't that just lazier than adapting them as just them in their actual world? 16:43 Well.... this aged well
This film having Aaron Carter as well just again makes it uncomfortable now remembering what happened to him. Seriously, it makes me hate how unforgiving the entertainment industry is to former child actors.
Budget, $45 million. Box office, $48.1 million (US), $48.6 million (worldwide). This Live-Action Adaptation of Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids suffered from an Audience-Alienating Premise (Having characters from a down to earth Slice of Life show exit the show, and enter the real world). And it wasn't well received by critics either. This movie proved to be a Creator Killer for its director, Joel Zwick, who has since gone back to the small screen.
“I knew a dog named Dorris” Ok I have to admit I thought that line was funny, mainly due to the awkward silence after it and everyone staring at him, it’s like everyone was thinking “Um….ok, why did that need to be said?”
I don't get why y'all are acting like it's solely a black thing to pronounce the letter I as an "ee" sound. Like... did none of y'all learn Spanish, French and/or Italian in school?
I feel this movie would've worked better if it was set in the 1970s when the show was created. That way, It would allow you to capture the essence of the show's color and style in a faithful way instead of the cliche "fictional character lost in our world" trope, (only Rocky & Bullwinkle did that right.) You don't need to be "hip" and modern for the 2000s, and you don't need the boring ass human protagonist overshadowing everyone. I guess it tried to be like Barbie that there's a deep meaning behind the cartoon and the real world, but I don't think kids movies in 2004, nor the studio would be ready for that. Especially if it's a Fat Albert movie.
Hey Critic, great to see another review from you! I remember seeing Fat Albert when I was still in elementary school. Seeing it again brings back fond memories, but I can definitely it's gotten weirder the more I watch it. Since it's almost March, I have some ideas you could use for your theme month. Brendan Fraser Month Keanu Reeves Month Toy Story Month Wallace and Gromit Month Nicolas Cage Month Part 2 Sequel Month Part 3 Scary Movie Month Mission Impossible Month Tom Cruise Month Avengers Month
I remember watching Kenan Thompason from when I was a kid. Watching me if All That, to Kenan and Kel, to where he is now on SNL. Seeing him to where he is now is just wow.
I can’t be the only one who (as a reflex) went “Wait, did he just pronounce Omarion as “Oh-mah-rye-on?” Nearly fell on the floor laughing at that, but also feel old remembering, “Oh yeah, Omarion (really pronounced ‘Oh-mah-ree-un) was a thing.”
What I find funny is how Fat Albert looks significantly slimmer in the real world. I know that might be down to practical effect limitations but I just find it kinda funny.
As soon as I saw the 2 guys peddling the car I felt like I should have watched this back then, it's the same stuff that makes me love "The Little Rascals" or "Our Gang" with the junkyard creations, also love "The Littles" creations too.
for me, Kenan Thompson's charm comes from the half-smile always present, and the full-on twinkle in his eyes. This guy is literally laughing ALL. THE. TIME. and it just seeps into everything he touches. Add to that his comedic timing, skill, and his beautiful, beautiful smile, and you've got comedy gold.
NC, you did a really good job of balancing respect for the folks who worked on this film while at the same time addressing the big, fat, pudding pop-elephant in the room.
The fact that the Barbie Movie had a better lesson of a fictional character having an existential crisis in the real world than Fat Albert did says a lot.
I remember this being one of my favorite live action adaptations of a cartoon or animated character to live action. Of course there's not too many good ones to compare it to.
This was definitely one of the more bizarre movies from my childhood, but I still cherish it in my heart, even if it wasn't all that great, if that's what I will find out from this video.
First off, I didn't know Aaron Carter was in this...and now I'm sad...Second, didn't the people who animated for "Proud Family" worked on this film too?
Not really important to the movie but I noticed at 11:51 on the girl’s nightstand there’s a radio next to the lamp and I recognize it because my parents have two of those and still have them to this day. They still work!
I kinda love this movie strictly because I had it on DVD when I was like 5 or 6 (for reasons I do not know 😂) and I would just sit and watch a handful of movies every few weeks on my TV. This film, The Mask, and Wallace and Grommit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit were three big ones (very different movies 😂). So this one will always have a special place in my heart.

Didn’t help he was apparently going through a divorce while filming it seems
Props to kenan Thompson to making us laugh for nearly thirty years
It’s no surprise he’s GREAT at SNL. Any 90s kid or baby knows why 👀.
It’s clear that loved his job as a kid, & now he loves doing it as an Adult.
The reason Kenan Thompson does so well in SNL is because he's already done, back when he was younger. Remember that Nickolodeon used to have a show called "All That" which was literally just a kids version of SNL.
Be prepared to tug your collar awkwardly at the mention of Bill Cosby
Oof
I did.
I'm more tugging my collar at Critic going for the low hanging fruit jokes.
Especially after bitching and moaning about this movies jokes not being funny but it's like dude, your material isn't any better here.
@@ukhistorian
Eh, I followed the case. Seeing Bill Cosby didn't bother me since his conviction was overturned.
@1krani on a technicality. He admitted to his crimes, but got off due to mismanagement of the trial.
He's the OJ Simpson of assault.
Doug pronouncing Omarion as “Oma-rion” is actually hilarious
Funny and sad
I thought I was the only one lmao. I had to pause the video for a minute, and I was like "sir!!" 😒🤦🏾♂️
Where is Malcolm he's supposed to protect Doug from embarrassments like this
OMAH-RYAN
Yeah, I heard that too and I knew I immediately had to come into the comments to make sure I wasn’t crazy.
I'm just going to say. I like this movie I think it's legitimately good.
This and the pirates who don’t do anything were the last films I got from blockbuster.
The Pirates who Don’t Do anything is a fun film. Loved that as a kid back in 2008
@@chasehedges6775 never saw it. I think the last film my friend and I got from blockbuster was some of the old dragon ball z broly movies
@@chasehedges6775 I think the only movies my friend and I remember renting from blockbuster were some of the dbz movies. I mostly used it to rent games. But sometimes I rented movies!
We are the pirates who don't do anything, we just stay at home and lie around!
Damn I feel old reading those lyrics
The critics might have torn this movie apart, but I remember on the last day of school in fourth grade back in 2005, my homeroom teacher brought a VHS copy of this to play in class. Now I knew very little about Fat Albert; The cartoon and the movie. But EVERY kid in my class was quoting every line to the point I couldn't hear the movie.
And I'm gonna be honest. The scene where the bullies started singing their theme song "Na na na, Gonna have a bad time!" Still makes me laugh to this day.
RIP Aaron Carter.. It's sad how you went out and I remember growing up with your music since I was in elementary/middle school
9:12
"Whats a mall?"
I thought the cartoon took place in the 70s? Weren't malls popularized as a concept in the 50s/60s?
Kenan Thompson has come a long way since All That! Glad he's still doing well.
NC: Kenan Thompson is my favorite SNL cast member.
Me: Then you should have no problem reviewing Heavyweights for DisneyCember, right? Please?🥺🥺🥺
I love Heavyweights
I think this Movie showed Kenan Thompson could be an amazing actor if you let him become that amazing actor
Has he done anything else as of recent?
Why did I learn Bill Cosby was released from jail from the Nostalgia critic?
I’m right there with you.
I grew up with the original Fat Albert cartoon. Cosby was everybody's TV dad. It was SUCH a kick in the balls after we learned what a monster he was. Also, having Jeff Garlin and Aaron Carter in this movie makes it a literal monsters ball.
You believe any smear campaign? The real monsters don't go on trial, bro.
Hearing what bill cosby did hit worse especially when growing up watching little bill on Nick jr
@@KingExalted aaaaaand my comment was deleted.
@@KingExaltedLittle Bill… that’s a name I hadn’t heard in years
Probably for good reason.
I miss All That, and Kenan and Kel. Those shows were great.
I’m with man, back when Nick didn’t treat its audience like Morons stupid enough to watch anything
Same on Kenan Thompson. He's my favorite, not just of the current cast, but of all time. He's just that funny.
This is actually the first thing I ever saw of Fat Albert. I didn't know there was an actual old cartoon by that name or what it was about until way later.
One of many cartoon live action films I’ve seen that was actually decent and enjoyable!
the fact that Nostalgia Critic likes Kenan Thompson makes my day and love him even more
I actually attended the premiere of the movie as a kid, since my dad worked with SNL during the time.
Hearing you pronounce Omarion as Omar Rion was the highlight of my day
Cringe for me, I’m like “bruh”
I literally scrolled through all of the comments hoping someone else called this out 😂
I still remember when Nickelodeon would play this movie all the time
Fitting given where Kenan Thompson got his start
Funny cuz TBH I’d rather watch this than anything stupid Modern SpongeBob crap
I love that "Cause I don't have a face" line, it makes so much world and law building in so little time.
I have been looking everywhere for the complete Fat Albert series on both Blu-ray and Streaming because I never watched Fat Albert growing up despite being born as a millennial in California during 1985.
Not story short this Nostalgia Critic video is one of my favorite videos so far.
0:59 that Black Jeopardy skit with Tom Hanks is amazing, especially because of the reactions of Kenan Thompson
It’s hilarious! Everyone needs to see that skit.
1:51 It also helps that he had experience with this even before he was on SNL back when Kenan was a child star on All That and Kenan & Kel on Nickelodeon.
It’s because of that experience that he was already in his element on SNL, especially when All That was a sketch comedy like SNL.
“oh-ma-ryan” had me rolling 😂 it’s “oh-ma-ree-on”!
4:35 somehow i find it weirder that they adapted the cartoon in this meta way of "they are cartoons coming to real life"...
isn't that just lazier than adapting them as just them in their actual world?
16:43 Well.... this aged well
It hurts a little to see Aaron Carter knowing that he's gone. Still miss him. 😢
This film having Aaron Carter as well just again makes it uncomfortable now remembering what happened to him. Seriously, it makes me hate how unforgiving the entertainment industry is to former child actors.
I saw this movie as a kid, and I left the theater not remembering what I watched. Thanks for bringing up this repressed memory again!
I don't know why they did the stupid "cartoon characters enter the REAL world" thing when the characters are just human children.
The way you said Omarion is so creative 😂😂😂
“I knew a dog named Dorris”
Ok I have to admit I thought that line was funny, mainly due to the awkward silence after it and everyone staring at him, it’s like everyone was thinking “Um….ok, why did that need to be said?”
You didnt have the time to ask Malcolm how to pronounce "Omarion"? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣You gotta do "You Got Served" to make up for it🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Literally what I was thinking Malcom should’ve saved him lmao
I don't get why y'all are acting like it's solely a black thing to pronounce the letter I as an "ee" sound. Like... did none of y'all learn Spanish, French and/or Italian in school?
@@TGWTGCensored nah...I'm just SURE Malcolm KNOWS who Omarion IS. Doug could have just asked.
I liked the 2D animated part of the whole movie.
I mostly remember the trailer for this movie lol. It was a fever dream for me
O-Ma-Ryan? 😄 O-Mar-Ree-On (Omarion) lol 7:49
Hey Critic, great to see another review from you! I remember seeing Fat Albert when I was still in elementary school. Seeing it again brings back fond memories, but I can definitely it's gotten weirder the more I watch it.
Since it's almost March, I have some ideas you could use for your theme month.
Brendan Fraser Month
Keanu Reeves Month
Toy Story Month
Wallace and Gromit Month
Nicolas Cage Month Part 2
Sequel Month Part 3
Scary Movie Month
Mission Impossible Month
Tom Cruise Month
Avengers Month
It is very hard for me to separate the art from the artist when it comes to Bill Cosby.
I remember watching Kenan Thompason from when I was a kid. Watching me if All That, to Kenan and Kel, to where he is now on SNL. Seeing him to where he is now is just wow.
Pronouncing Omarion as “Oh-mah-Rye-on” is funny as fuck
Omar Ryan.
Actually that’s not too far off from his birth name Omari Grandberry.
I can’t be the only one who (as a reflex) went “Wait, did he just pronounce Omarion as “Oh-mah-rye-on?”
Nearly fell on the floor laughing at that, but also feel old remembering, “Oh yeah, Omarion (really pronounced ‘Oh-mah-ree-un) was a thing.”
What I find funny is how Fat Albert looks significantly slimmer in the real world. I know that might be down to practical effect limitations but I just find it kinda funny.
I'll bet they could've made it work, effects work can be pretty creative, just not in this film.
@@WonderlanderRaye “hey hey hey, rules don’t apply to me”
A perfect NC episode! No skits, a nostlagic subpar movie, Doug talks about something he loves and a couple of edgy jokes! 11/10!
Well. Let's see how many Bill Cosby jokes can be packed in here.😅
I mostly love the hand drawn scenes, they were my favourite out of the movie.
The fact that the Barbie Movie had a better lesson of a fictional character having an existential crisis in the real world than Fat Albert did says a lot.
Nostalgia Critic’s pronunciation of “Omarion” is funnier than anything in the actual movie. 🤣
I remember this being one of my favorite live action adaptations of a cartoon or animated character to live action. Of course there's not too many good ones to compare it to.
Really Doug, you couldnt double check with Malcolm how "Omarion" is pronounced?
Truly a DougDoug moment
I knew I'd find at least one comment mentioning this. This was definitely planned.
Kenan is a national treasure!❤
I actually thought the live action scenes were done pretty well in this film
This was definitely one of the more bizarre movies from my childhood, but I still cherish it in my heart, even if it wasn't all that great, if that's what I will find out from this video.
Ok I just have to let Doug know this: his name is pronounced OH MAR EE ON
This movie is kinda like the Barbie of the early 2000s, and the movie is still charming imo if you get past the Bill Cosby scenes.
Malcolm why didn’t you save Doug from butchering Omarion’s name?😂. It’s oh-mar-ion. Not oh my Ryan
That mispronunciation of Omarion cracked me up 😂
Oh-muh-RYAN was my favorite singer of that era.
Omar Ryan. Not too far off from his birth name. Omari Ishmael Grandberry.
First off, I didn't know Aaron Carter was in this...and now I'm sad...Second, didn't the people who animated for "Proud Family" worked on this film too?
So the guy inspired by a teenage girl's grandfather becomes her love interest?
That tracks for Cosby.
Your commentary during the Cosby scene was every.thing. 😂
