They live in Los Angeles where depending on where you live the rent could easily be in the thousands for a studio apartment. One guy I know is paying over $5000/month for a one bedroom apartment. Admittedly it is near the ocean and has great security but otherwise it is a basic apartment. Also these people are comedians which means they don't make much until/unless they make it big. While being on Dropout is nice it's not the same as having a HBO special.

i think it shows the consideration that is put into the prizes instead of it being wasteful shiny trash. the best gifts are the things you actually need. its says more about the state of dropout imo. (not dismissing how messed up it is that ppl go without basic necessities, i just dont think its helpful to call solidarity between creatives sad)

I don't think there's any implication that the contestants might be unable to afford those basics like rent, but that they might not have much left over after they do.
I felt bad for Raph until the drawer. But what if someone gets the first month and the second month? Does Sam ask the other two to both open their drawers? In any case, I'm happy Raph was included in the rent payments.
