    Brilliant video can’t believe I never got one of these when they used to get chucked into bins ..I remember seeing one of these get smashed up in a second hand shop because he had it for sale for £30 and no one wanted it and it was taking up room in his shop..he tried selling it me but it was at the time everyone was moving over to computer based recording so gear like this was seen as unhip and useless..,,man there worth a fortune now lol

    Thank you James, thank you for the fat stems and another bit of knowledge shared! Can't say it enough that i learned a lot, just from watching your videos! In contrast to other Sample Companies, whose videos are mostly just some bombast void of any educational value, one can always learn something from your product videos! What i would like to learn, resp hear your thoughts on is what consists a good master for you these days, in particular how loud & dynamic you think a master should be.

    Great video. I love HQ SP videos like this so thank you. Nice way to play the hihats with different velocity. The SP does have dynamic buttons but from reading how it works I guess its not very useful (The vibration of the 'whole machine' (not a single button) is measured with a piezo crystal. The voltage of this crystal is read by the ADC and used to set the output level). You can turn this on in Setup 14. If it doesn't work the crystal is probably broken or need to recalibrate. Damn I want that machine but not for the price the go today.

      I honestly did not know that and will be bang on that next week - The manual entry for it is hilarious - Just read it .... The SP1200 and UADs Luna is a dream combination. Use the DAW (Luna) as a mixing desk and keep the SP 'live'. Lunas ARM mode means zero latency so you can jam the SP through it - track 8 tracks into DAW and jam the SP over the top - unlimited tracks

    5:37 where did you sample the tambourine from?

    • @F9Audio
      @F9Audio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think a live loop I’d made .. I have a number of ribbon mics at the studio and even the cheap T bone mics from Thomann do wonders with metal percussion as they have little response over 15K

    • @mynickname6787

      @@F9Audio how is it that it firstly appears in the Ableton (and then in the SP) if you sampled it into the SP and then record it into the Ableton

    • @F9Audio
      @F9Audio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mynickname6787 Because the simplest workflow for loops that allows you to to get the 'sound' of the SP is to get something working in time in Ableton using traditional Ableton warp , then sample it into the SP1200 and then spit it back out -

      @mynickname6787 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@F9Audio oh word i thought the simplest way would be to sample into the SP and then record into the Ableton

    • @F9Audio
      @F9Audio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mynickname6787 not if the Loop is at a different tempo - the SP has a low bit parameter for the pitch of the sample so can be hit or miss getting it in time .. sometimes this is useful as you get the SP ‘ring’ when you detune anything on the machine but with a HF component like a tamb loop I find you just want the 12 bit-thru-a-filter-chip sound

    Where are the samples from?

  • @SunlightOfTheSpirit
    @SunlightOfTheSpirit 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So , do you import normal samples and the unit down samples the quality so it sounds crunchy?

    • @F9Audio
      @F9Audio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes _it has 12 bit convertors - Remember this is not 12 times lower than the modern normal of 24 bit - it's binary maths - a 12 bit system has only 4096 possible values when sampling each point - a 24 bit system has over 16 million possible values when sampling .. Also - on playback the samples are then reconverted to audio from sample stream and passed through analog filter chips to remove some of the crispy top end - There's also a fixed sample frequency inside the unit so when samples are detuned against it, you get an aliasing frequency in the output .. It never ceases to amaze me how clever the engineers were at problem solving - and how many times we invent a non perfect system - refine it and then realise it was funkier in it's original form

  • @KevinArdala01
    @KevinArdala01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Why aren't there modern companies building samplers with innards equivalent to the SP1200 or the Akai S950, but with an improved interface, form-factor, and workflows? Everybody loves and covets these machines...I just don't get why there's this gap in the market...you'd think in today's age making something like this would be a doddle. 🤔

    • @F9Audio
      @F9Audio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I've said this a Zillion times - Either a sampler or a hardware in / out grot box that emulates these machines - 8 bit, 12 bit and 16 bit with Dual stereo analog filters and controls to jitter the clocks

      @MrSRellz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It would be great to have a hardware interface that could do that. Maybe the UAD Apollo could add it? In the mean time there’s a plug-in called RX950 that can give you some of the crunch and also the filter of the Akai S950

    • @F9Audio

      I think YOu would need to find one you can go and check out - They reissued them in the 90s and these ones are slightly cheaper and with better ( modern ) power supplies .. .However they are all like owning a classic car - at some point, you will have an expensive repair bill - it's just part and parcel of owning vintage devices ... Considering the prices I would avoid anything on Ebay that worries you and stick 100% with trusted sellers either there or reverb.com

  • @project-95

    Sounds fantastic. The missing ingredient from modern polished productions - as good as they are. There's a lot to be said for these old machines and the character they imbued on 90's music

    • @F9Audio
      @F9Audio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s amazing to think just how many times we’ve stepped forward with music technology, cleaned it all up and then gone ‘hang on - all that old stuff just sounds better’ … I just love the fact that thin was designed to be as affordable as could be and then those considerations ended up creating a sound that was a vital ingredient as you say to so many 90s classics .. along Live these wonderful old boxes

    A massive thank you for the download James, responding to your invitation I have woven the stems into this track. With such choice of sounds to use I didn't stick to the K.I.S.S format which perhaps takes the sharpness away in parts. Best I could do with the vocal track recording but I enjoyed working on the project. Not perfect but not bad for a learner. soundcloud.com/soundgrounder/from-the-start-ft-jenna-evans-ext-mix
