  • My 2011 Toyota Rav4 showed a check engine, traction control and 4WD warning lights on the dash--and I couldn't set the cruise control. OBD Codes were P043E, P043F, P2401, P2402 and P2419 which all indicate Evaporative Emission System Leak and faults. My problem was the evap system Leak Detection Pump. This video shows the trouble shooting and replacement of the Leak Detection Pump. I also take the pump apart were I found heavy rust and rusty water inside the pump. This is the second time I have replaced the Leak Detection Pump!
    Online manual that shows the troubleshooting of the Evap System: The official source for the service manual is techinfo.toyota.com which you have to pay to access, but you can buy a two-day pass for $15.

    Thank you for posting this video. I had the exact same codes on my 2010 RAV4 and I replaced the entire canister. I cleared the codes but still had permanent codes on the reader. After doing some research, I found out that the vehicle needs to recalibrate for a little bit. I drove it for about a week, plugged the reader in, and I have zero codes!

    So it's a pump and a valve in one? That same set up is on Toyota yairs. It's the canister with pump on it got it at autozone for $522 vs dealer wiych they were sold separately and wanted $1100. But still getting large Evap PO455 and 1 other code. The original canister was plugged up and the gas pump shut off every 50 cents of gas pump into the gas tank.

    The issue for me is not the fix,... I've done it a hundred times. The issue is finding the point(s) of moisture entry and sealing it up... I live in an area with deep puddles and am tired of deciding weather to climb under or pay the dealer 900 to fix it... frustrating!!!

    Thanks for the video. I have a 09 with the 2.5. When the engine is at operating temp, if I go run an errand and restart the car after sitting for 10 minutes, my idle drops to 500 rpm for a few seconds, runs rough, and then idle smooths back out to 650-700 rpm. I cleaned the throttle body, MAF sensor, replaced coils, plugs and air filter. I also changed the ECT and crankshaft sensors with no luck. I don’t have any CELs, and it doesn’t happen when the engine is cold. Any idea what it could be? Without a CEL 2 different mechanics didn’t want to diagnose it.

      It must be problematic on a lot of Toyotas from different years and, models. I had a 96 Avalon with the same problem only they stopped making a replacement!!! Another thing is to avoid filling the tank past the 1st click. That tends to leak right into the canister!!! Thanks for the info!!! I can hardly wait to do my 2011 Rav4. I got lucky in one respect my cruise still works with all those lights on.

    I don't understand how the pump can become exposed to water internally. Presumably, it is sealed, and constantly has a small flow of fuel vapor purging any moisture that might be in the pump and bringing it to the engine to be burned. Explanation?

    • @keepcalmandfarmon5401
      @keepcalmandfarmon5401  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Bought this RAV4 used in Feb 2014 with 30k miles. Guessing I replaced the leak detection pump the first time in 2015 so at about 50k miles. The second time I replaced it was May 2017 (approx. 70k miles). As of today Feb 2019 I have 90k miles. If the pattern continues I may due for another change.

    • @keepcalmandfarmon5401
      @keepcalmandfarmon5401  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Changing out the evap leak detection pump likely may NOT fix a P0457. P0457 is a code for the evap system detecting a large leak, so the evap leak detection pump seems like it is working properly (because it detected a leak). You may have a bad gas cap or a hole in the gas filler neck or in some of the piping to or from the evaporator--best to trouble shoot for leaks before changing out any parts.
