❤ great video. I love seeing them all together like that. I always keep cobalt blue on my palette. It’s great for portraits - when you might not want the granulation of pb29. I LOVE pb74! I have winsor and Newton. If you get the opportunity- Daniel smith pb36 is reallllly nice.

Ultramarine is a more beautiful gem-like color and people buy it as the default blue. It is encouraged by being cheaper than Cobalt. However, we should never choose colors because they are pretty. Cobalt Blue is a far more useful blue than Ultramarine. Good for mixing violets. Fantastic for sky colors. And makes good earthy greens for landscape.
Such a pity it has become so expensive. It wasn't so bad back in the early to mid 20th century, but since the mid 1950's the price has steadily climbed. This is because Cobalt is a necessary component of the alloys used in making turbine blades in jet engines. While there are other known alloys with similar heat resistant properties, cobalt alloys are in high demand due to cost and ease of manufacture. There has been rapid increase in world cobalt production but during the last 25 years demand has been growing faster than production because the other major usage for cobalt is in lithium ion batteries, and lithium battery production is growing very rapidly.
These industrial demands for cobalt have been squeezing pigment production and forcing pigment prices up. Blame jet aircraft and the battery in your phone.
Cobalt blues have been used for at least five thousand years making it one of the oldest pigments, however the metal itself was not known, as it only naturally occurs in compounds, and since many of those compounds contain bismuth, it was presumed that the color came from the bismuth. These same compounds usually also contained arsenic, and I do not know why they didn't assume that the color came from that instead. The arsenic, however, is connected to the name.
For centuries before the discovery of the cobalt metal, the production of the color was associated with evil and the underworld. This is because in producing the blue color the arsenic caused toxic arsenic oxide fumes to be released and many miners would get sick or die. Thus it was referred to as the goblin mineral in various languages. The mineral was thought to be cursed, and it was said that the mineral was created underground by evil goblins.
The German word for that was cobald, which literally means goblins. When the metal was isolated in 1735 by Georg Brandt, a Swedish chemist, he used the German word for the ore, probably because the ore that he was working on in Stockholm had been mined in Germany. Cobald became Cobalt in English, because why spell it correctly when you can annoy the Germans by misspelling it? :) It was Brandt who was able to demonstrate that the blue color is due to the cobalt metal and that bismuth had nothing to do with it.
There had been seven metals known since ancient times, and cobalt was the first new metal discovered for thousands of years. It's discovery lead to the discovery of large numbers of new metals over the following couple of centuries and is seen as the start of modern metallurgy. Thus cobalt can be considered a very important metal in the history of chemistry and our modern usage of metals.
Brandt is also famous for debunking Alchemy. He apparently had a pet peeve about alchemists claims about using pseudo-scientific methods in an attempt to produce metals by transmutation. He used his discovery of cobalt to publicly demonstrate that using actual chemistry he could really produce a new metal while the alchemists had many claims, but failed to produce testable results. It was the beginning of the end for alchemy.
I know you enjoy these little extra historic stories, Elisabetta :) Hope you and family are well.

    Elizabetta,
Could you tell me what you would say would be the clearest cobalt colour, no streaks and no granulation that you have there? I prefer red leaning blue.
I like my skies to be really flat in transition.
If I mix with a raw sienna, Pb24 or a non granulating ochre, I don't want to get green, rather a mix of non granulating, flat, colour! I often add a touch of white to get the non granulation too....
Thank you for your work and time, one would think there isn't much difference in hue, but clearly there is!

Oh just a few more questions about the Rosa Gallery, thanks so much, Elisabetta!
Do you like them in pans (sticky?) or in tubes? I can't find that they have honey in them?
eg here in Sydney humidity at 80-90 percent in Summer, so a lot of my handmade ones are always wet in pans stored, white nights are tacky in pans when they arrive so we stick them in the freezer, M Graham would be too wet here, and I don't much like them when they are sticky and gooey, so I stay away from them. I can handle tacky. But in a tube, it looks thinner consistency, but then I wouldn't have to worry about drying them? I like Qor, and it seems like the Rosa Gallery do move and flow, so that is something I love.
The clear colours of Rosa Gallery, look clearer than the Schmincke or W & N in general!
When you mix the Rosa Gallery yellow ochre PY 42 & 43 with a cobalt blue, does it stay grey? Or do you recommend a Pbr6 or 7 in the range for my blue sky mix, clearest grey? Naples Yellow, or Raw sienna? Burnt Sienna or Umber? The Rosa gallery seems to have some lovely clarity, and the pigments seem to be doing slightly different things to what is expected from them?
In our sky here, we have a warm blue clear blue sky, the bottom close to the horizon has a glow. Our clouds glow with a warmth that feels like getting hugged. :)
Lovely to chat to a collector, we all know how to talk the talk. A real sense of belonging to the pigment people! Thanks again!
      In kindred spirit,

Thank you for your very interesting videos. I'm not sure whether you are aware that the Schmincke PB 74 was discontinued. It is not in their most recent color card. They only have the cobalt blue light, and the hue. They call their PB 36 a cerulean, which I think is much more appropriate. I think from your swatches one can very well see that the PB 36 varietiy does not belong in this color family. Too green for that. When I bought my Sennelier Aquafine set of 12 I was so frustrated they did not give me an Ultramarine, but Cobalt blue instead. This was when I didn't know that much about colors as I do today - and now I think this is a good alternative to Ultramarine, especially for skies. Usually the sky is not so warm blue as Ultramarine. Don't get me wrong, I do love blue in all its varieties, but I find that pure Ultramarine has less uses for me than the colder blues, as it looks more unnatural. Of course Ultramarine is still a staple for mixing. I might make my own comparison chart of mixes of all the different Cobalts, but I would put in an Ultramarine, and a Phtalo as well for more comparison, and perhaps a different cool red. Seems I have a plan for the afternoon! Thanks again for all the hard work you put in these videos.

    • @WatercolorElisabetta
      @WatercolorElisabetta  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree with you, cobalt is definitely an acquired taste… ultramarine is easier to appreciate. Yes, PB36 doesn’t fit very well, but as Maimeri calls it Cobalt Blue, I thought it was interesting to swatch it. Stay tuned for next video about Cerulean blue! Have a lovely weekend and happy swatches!! Thanks a lot for participating in the conversation.
