  • If you refuse to take responsibility and forgive past pain you not only keep the cycle alive indefinitely - BUT risk becoming exactly that which you hate.
    But… does it… actually??? Let's find out!

some things don't deserve forgiveness, knowing when to forgive, but accepting things, is harder than just forgiving

I can see where you are comming from. But I think even in the worst cases it can still help to see that the person who did something terrible was influenced by all the things he/she experienced throughout their lives.

What doesn't kill you makes you the killer, because the victim of the criminal survived, let's say the fictional example of bruce waine who survived that night when his parents died, but then again, something in him snapped and he was able to grow tougher but then again, he wasn't inocent anymore, he paid for his strenght with his inocense if you think about about it, he even said himself In a cutscene from one of the games that he wishes to kill joker ever since he met him, but he thinks that would be too easy, but he wishes he did, and that's the thing I wanted to point out, it depends on the reasoning and willpower and, of course, motivation of the person to define how they'll develop, both batman and the joker developed from those similar trauma events in their lifes, in a very distinct way and that's thanks to their genetic and psichological and, obviously neurological differences, but it is a thing influenced by how they were as people before...what do you think guys? am I right about my analysis on how it works? was my example any good?

I love your philosophical videos! Here are some thoughts on this topic:
Many things can be seen as skills instead of just magical forces or fixed personality traits, this applies to relationships, empathy, love and so on. If you practice those skills you will get better, but trying and failing is important to get better at something, so "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" could be translated "trying makes you stronger, even if you fail". And if you grow up in a loving and safe environment you will get more chances at practicing the skills of love and empathy and will probably be better at those skills. Same thing as if you grow up with a guitar you have a much better chance at being a good guitarist than someone who has never even seen a guitar in real life.
Also, at least where I live (Sweden), I feel that socially we look down on people who fail so people get scared of even trying from the fear of failing. Just look at our view of success, we are so good at analyzing what successful people do "right" but we never even mention what they have done and failed at, or what not so successful people do. It's always looking for the easy solutions, the five easy steps to success, and never mentioning the work it takes to get there, and the different starting conditions and journeys through life for different people.
I also recommend you read a few of Erich Fromm's books, they are a great source of inspiration!

So true and right, Adam. As a child psychotherapist I learned that the root of all bad behaviour is pain. A child or adolescent would behave cruelly, angrily, horribly, and I’d talk to the parents and find out that their lives were fraught with stress and trauma. Get in the grandparents....same deal. Great grandparents probably dead and anyways what’s the point? It’s all pain, buried to a certain extent and vivid in their violent, aggressive, horrible behaviours. I’m so grateful for my career, which drove home this understanding repeatedly. There can be no judgment, no blame.....rapists and violent people have to be caught and put away, to keep us safe. But they need treatment, not punishment. And forgiveness is hard, and requires understanding, which does not come easily to most of us. But it’s the only way forward for us all.

This is totally well put. I don't think Nietszche meant that this phrase applies in any way.. but if you understand him at all he argued that people don't have any real value in this world besides God, who most people don't even believe exists anyways, and the only real value we have without God is to become the "overman" or superior human be it physically, intellectually, etc. He believed that the only way to become better than others is through responsibility, discipline, etc. When an addict quits drugs he overcomes addiction and becomes stronger. He SUFFERS the brutal pain of withdrawal. Literally has physical pain induced by addiction, where the brain molds and changes its physiology as a result, is suffered and endured, and when the body begs for its hit making you sweat and cough, you deal with it through discipline. When you can undergo discipline for a long time, you then become stronger.

I completely share your opinions on the war on drugs, religion, meaning of life and basically everything. You talk about all this in a perfect way, your contentis straight up amazing. I can imagine going to bed without listening to your vids for an solid hour. You manage go inform and entertain like no other channel. I like to think we are very simular people, im only 18 but i can relate to your current point of views and opinions, and your stories from your youth. I have yet to meet a person whos as reflective as you about both drugs and the phiosofical stuff. I also like using and not abusing lsd, and mdma, i think i can grow by using this the propper way. i’ve only done it a couple of times and thanks to your channel i’ve had a safer exsperiance and also saved several friends from badtrips, and generaly informed them on what the drugs offer and all that basic info so they know what to exspect, and also know how, when, where and with who to do them with. Ive done this by informing them like you informed me. I cant quite exspress what your channel means to me but i really love your mindset in general, i wish i could meet you in person but i live in norway so thats a far fetch. This is a great video. I myself am someone who has in the past hurt someone in similar ways that I was hurt in a relationship because of the pain I was going through. Another part of this conversation is the ability to be able to forgive yourself for your wrongdoings. Sometimes you'll never get that forgiveness from the people you've hurt, so you have to learn how to forgive yourself and move past it to ultimately be a better person. That's what I'm currently struggling with.

I recently had an abuse of not-so-good-acid and i've had some revelations, some of them extremely wholesome and some really heartbreaking and it made decide that it was time to give myself a break even from weed, alcohol and cigarettes. To take my time to ACTUALLY undestand what I've been trough and to practice what i just learnt.
I got caught up in the trap that psychedelics would help me by its on, when all i wanted was a way to escape realitty because i was deeply depressed, and they showed me that i am responsible for what happens to me. I felt love, fear, connection and isolation all at once, like a way more intense nostalgia and i needed that kick in the face to see that i let my egocentrism run my life.
You helped me with your videos to find a place to go when i needed advice and had no one to talk to. You helped me, in a certain way, to put into words what i felt.
My deepest gratitute both for you opening up to us like you do and for being such a good friend. =)

Adam! Thanks alot, great content. I watch all your videos, both swim and psychedsubstance. Looking forward to a possible "empathy" video! You look great btw. Keep making videos, you have been an inspiration to me actually. I dont copy you though, I just take the parts that makes sense to me, and I try to implement them into my life as much as possible. Just wanted to let you know that you really help people, and you really make a difference. You, for example, made me realise how important safe drug use is, and how it should be taught in schools. Thanks Adam. :) Greetings from Sweden

The big "problem" is, that "what doesn't kill us makes us stronger" is true and false at the same time. When something "bad" happens we tend to let the ego grow by it. We try to rationalize why this happend to me, we get frustrated and want to let this pain go by projecting it on others. When in reality, we have to accept everything as it is, because our own judgment doesn't change reality as it is. The thing that is making stuff bad, is wanting to get outside of the now.
When we accept everything as it is, especially when we hit rock bottom, nothing will be bad nor good. We get stronger by seeing and accepting our own lack of control. We get strong by seeing and accepting we aren't.

this video is quite refreshing. thanks so much for sharing. in my experience, that which hasn't killed me has provided me with greater awareness, resilience and loving strength.. however i did commit to the deep work and rising above the situations so i may learn from them and break the cycles. it reminds me of a poem i wrote.. some of the lines are:
"when i feel lost or trapped inside of myself, i no longer try to find a way out. instead, i go deeper. deeper to the place where anger bows down to forgiveness and desire makes friends with evolution. in there, pain is a strange pair with freedom."

Hey Adam!!! I️ love your channel!!!! I️ wanted to say that I️ have generally gone through a lot of shitty things in my life but I️ am also very empathetic and can genuinely put myself in other peoples shoes and see their pain and perspective but I’ve noticed that that tends to hold me back so much because I️ don’t do things that are better for me because I️ see how it’ll negatively affect other people. For example: I️ live with an aunt right now and her family and it’s become very toxic for me and is bringing me down tremendously and I’m very unhappy here but I️ don’t feel like I️ can leave because I️ put myself in my aunts shoes and I️ see she will be very hurt if I️ leave because she has helped me so much but at this point being here is degenerative to my emotional well-being so I️ am stuck being unhappy so I️ do not hurt someone I️ love on the other hand if I️ were to be selfish and leave and be happier somewhere else I️ would feel guilty for what I’ve done... any tips/advice on being too empathetic?

i enjoy hearing about your life experiences. sometimes we are fragile, a glass with a crack. one more drop and we fall apart. the ability to heal doesn't mean we forget the pain, but that we use it in a useful way, in the hopes to save people from that pain, and to show the world and our selves that there is still hope. i have learned quite a bit from the videos and experiences. the further we dare to go, the closer to ourselves that we become. its a journey of discovery! and sometimes, to help us move beyond ourselves, we must occasionally dump off some of our baggage. sometimes our journey of discovery begins after we have taught ourselves to let go of the trauma and drama of our lives, and to live instead of surviving. forgiveness is a huge part of this journey, as well as understanding what has changed your path. i struggle with the pain from my past, and some things are difficult, but the end goal of being free of that pain is a powerful strong force for change.
