You must get into the mindset of a child who only played Super Mario Land 1 & 2 to really appreciate this gem. The fact that they included so many collectibles, different endings and an entire secret world was mindblowing. The game was also a little bit darker and the music was more haunting. It didn't change the history of videogames but this game is dear to millions of people.
Nintendo R&D1 put their all into it, too. Even playing these for the first time as an adult after only having Mario Land 2 as a kid, it feels like the Wario Land series was their baby. The pieces regularly get recombined in clever ways, and it all feels so at-home on the Game Boy. Not compromised like a squashed-down TV game.
Just dropped by to bask in the love this game deserves. I was OBSESSED by it, as it was my first Gameboy game, which was my first NINTENDO ever, at 13 years old. It got it when it was December and cold, but now I had a portable world at my disposal. The art direction blew my mind the most. It was Mario mixed with an all out pirate theme, complete with a beautifully drawn minimap and tons of secrets. A kid's dream. Then there was the music, goofy but also surprisingly moody at times. I love how the series have evolved since then but to me this one still takes the cake.
I cannot comprehend how my child self managed to do and find everything in this game back then without any help and walkthroughs... Most importantly, to do that, it meant the game was addictive and kept my interest. And it's true. This game is so imaginative and purposeful towards its final goal for poor Wario to get his castle of his dreams (or even world!) after evil Mario kicked him out in SML2 :):):) Very nice memories. I do remember the struggle though :D :D :D
I always enjoyed this more than mario games due to the added powers. being able to punch, pickup and throw enemies was just so much better than simply getting to jump on them. Not to mention the flamethrower and rocket hats.
Everytime I played this game on my Gameboy back in the day, angels would literally come down from Heaven and sing while I was playing. This was beautiful. This was my childhood, and this was absolutely fun!
I played this exciting game back in 2002, not only are the graphics great, but some levels even contain some transparrancy effects like standing behing a waterfall or rocks, or some scrolling backgrounds, on the map screen you see that wario as if he going trough holes, this game pulls off some amezing thing on gameboy.
My favorite game of all time. The story about pirates is so cool! The music is still beautiful. Just listen to that Mt Teapot theme... Then you have all the creative power ups, great looking graphics, fantastic level design, the treasure collecting, the secrets, and bonus games... it’s just amazing. While everyone is talking about Mario, the true gamers know it’s really about Wario Land!
For 20 years, this game was totally out of my mind. And yet, as soon as I saw it, the memories came swarming back in. I would say that this was probably my favorite gameboy game. Either this or kirby's dreamland.
Loved this game soooo much. I spent hours boosting my coin score by feeding enemies to those bit fat chicken things that then spit out three 10 gold coins so I could get the best ending
Man oh man.....I remember this one. Played the hell out of it. I remember me and my friends would get together and try to get all of the hidden treasures so we can get the moon ending. LOL, this game was great. What an awesome childhood we had, I am 30 now and can truly say gaming has had an IMMENSE influence on my life. That genie was a jerkoff, lol.
Amazing playthrough of this game, you made it look so easy! This was my favourite Gameboy game as a kid, and I still think it has one of the best endings of a game ever, as well as the best music for the credits as well. I used to feel so awesome when I got all the treasures, lol.
Man this game has a LOT of secrets. Yo dawg, we put a secret world in a secret level, so you can explore secret areas of secret level while you're i a secret world xD I remeber figurem almost all of them(i think) on my own as a kid. Good times ^^ I was dissapointed in the end when Mario nicked my statue tho.
Meanwhile in a universe where everything is as it should be: _"The studio that brought you Rayman Legends has just announced the next Wario Land game!"_
The Mt. Teapot map music sounds like one of the songs in The Secret of Mana..! Cool! I remember seeing commercials for this as a kid, never owned a GameBoy til much much later, but this game still looks really cool. Very complex, too, showing just what the GameBoy was capable of in the early 90s. Impressive! Thanks for playing it!
I beat this game when I was 5 years old on GBA, took me like 2 years to beat it and my god I was so excited and happy that I can never forget the moment
One of the first Game Boy games I completed and a true advert for the system. Over here in England we were definitely Sega country but the Game Boy was THE handheld system to have. Still a big of Wario games and the whole character because of this game.
Hey guys! Here's a secret cheat: -Pause the game -Press Select 16 times -When you see the clear box blinking, press Up + A to get extra lives, coins, hearts, and time remaining. -To move to the next selection, press Right + A. This'll make things easier.
I remember that our friend was giving away a BUNCH of games and this was one of them. We never noticed it but it was so much fun. My sister and I use to fight over it
I remember borrowing this game from a friend, coming home after school, popping it in... and beating it on my very first try. Usually I am not the kind of gamer to beat any game easily, but the difficulty level of this one is very low indeed. It's still a pretty cool game, and of course I just recently learned that there are various endings. I propably got to see the worst ending possible, lol.
Death Battle is doing Wario vs King DDD so that reminded me of this game. I love how the levels change after you beat the world. The replay-ability and the secrets/sidequests are so amazing in this game. I always wondered what happened if you maxed out the money counter. So cool
My first game boy game ever :) My classmate sold me his Game Boy Pocket for something like 10 bucks, but he didn't have any games for it anymore. Luckily, not too long after, there was a guy selling older games in a mall, so I picked this game. Loved this game ever since
I LOVED this game as a kid! I regret not buying a copy when I had the chance! It was so much fun, and I loved having an opportunity to play as Wario, a slightly-more edgy version of everyone’s favorite plumber. Heck, even his powerups -- the bull hat, the dragon hat, and the jet-pack hat - were just a bit cooler than that of his blue-and-red counterpart.
I remember back in 1997, I bought this cartridge before SML and SML2. This game owns them all. By the way, excellent sound too: the Mt. Teapot tune is absolutely brilliant.
I don't remember much more of it than that... it has been WAY too long since I've played or been there. I thought it would have been on the internet by now, and it is a fainting memory. Just when you play the game a lot and finally unlock something like that, you do remember it. Some details stay more than others. I hope somebody else can find it too and post it. It would definitely be a first on the internet, at least from what I can search. Good luck to those who try and find it.
A true game masterpiece, simple, and addicting. And you had to work to get a 100% from this game. LOL I feel like playing this again. Shame my DS doesn't play GB games.
I didn't have money to buy a gameboy as I was a kid, but a friend of my brother had it and lend It to me so I could experience it. I remember this was the game which I played on my brother's friend gameboy and had great times with it.
While Mario and Wario coexist in the same universe, I love the artistic choices for Wario's games. The characters, enemies and even locations are much more creative and wacky than those of Mario's games.
And Also And Me In Game Boy Color I Have My Favorite Wario Land Game On Tape And I Am Very Happy To Play This Wario Game And Always Wish You Always Good My Friend
I only recently started getting into retro gaming. I bought my Gameboy pocket six months ago and since then I've played tetris, mario and yoshi, WWF superstars, donkey kong land, and I'm thinking about buying this :)
I insist on getting it; it has a very different feel to the Mario games and some of the later levels have some pretty emotional music and design - it's amazing what the GameBoy can produce!
brad atherton I do hope you conquered the world with wario as a child. was one of my highlights in game boy games, finding out about the secret ending.
brad atherton you are preaching to the choir - I was a kid back then as well and had no net access either, because there was no net. also, none of my friends played that game - they were all about mortal kombat in those days. lucky me most entries in the mario series have a fair design and are actually manageable, even for a child.
I replay the game on purpose, each time with a different amount of bags of money.. Just to see what kind of house he can buy... Best game in my childhood life
You must get into the mindset of a child who only played Super Mario Land 1 & 2 to really appreciate this gem. The fact that they included so many collectibles, different endings and an entire secret world was mindblowing. The game was also a little bit darker and the music was more haunting. It didn't change the history of videogames but this game is dear to millions of people.
Also, this game includes changes in the map, like the first level when it gets flooded by the water.
This was the only game I had when I was a kid and I loved it!
Nintendo R&D1 put their all into it, too. Even playing these for the first time as an adult after only having Mario Land 2 as a kid, it feels like the Wario Land series was their baby. Wait.... different endings? 😂 I must get to play it again, 30 years later
one of the best video games ever made. period.
The sequels are better tbh
Sequels sucks
Had this game for gameboy
The sequels gave me HECK
One of the best games ever made? LMAO. Don't get me wrong Wario Land was a really good game, but it's not even close to be one of the best games.
Just dropped by to bask in the love this game deserves. I was OBSESSED by it, as it was my first Gameboy game, which was my first NINTENDO ever, at 13 years old. It got it when it was December and cold, but now I had a portable world at my disposal. The art direction blew my mind the most. The first game that I bought with my own money. Had to wash my Aunts cars and water her plants for 2 or 3 months.
brian thomas awesome job ! I remember buying this game as a kid too
What were they paying you, nickels?
i guess today you are a businessman? =)
You invested your money well, from my perspective. This is one of the best games for game boy.
Seems like a fair trade to me
I cannot comprehend how my child self managed to do and find everything in this game back then without any help and walkthroughs...

Very nice memories. I do remember the struggle though :D :D :D
Dude I agreed with you 100%
Probably lots of free time and few to none other games to play.
Same!! 😭
Wario actually stole Mario's castle in sml 2
I always enjoyed this more than mario games due to the added powers. being able to punch, pickup and throw enemies was just so much better than simply getting to jump on them. Not to mention the flamethrower and rocket hats.
You CAN pick up stuff in Mario games...
i can't believe it's not everything dude at the time this game came out(1993) you didn't had such a thing in Mario games..
Yup, tennis rackets and all
LeKyuu The One what about super Mario bros 2
You can pick up things in Donkey Kong 94 with Mario xD.
Used to play this every day as a kid the memories!!! Now 30 and still watching it my son loves these games too
Everytime I played this game on my Gameboy back in the day, angels would literally come down from Heaven and sing while I was playing. This was beautiful. This was my childhood, and this was absolutely fun!
This was the very first video game I ever played and now I know that it's also the most nostalgic of them all. Thank you Nintendo
I loved this game and was addicted to it. This was the only game that I beat when I had a game boy period. Oh the memories!! 😫😫😫

Yes I did discover that cheat later, it was awesome :)
lucyAbryant Yep I remember I was in elementary school when one of my classmates told me this cheat, I was astonished!
Black Pumpkin I remember a friend at school telling me the same thing. I always used it :)

This game is the shit. So many memories...
+Festive Surprise Oh yes, I got this game for Christmas in '94.. I think I played it through in one session the same night.
+Festive Surprise Amazing what they did with that game on gameboy!
No, it's not!
Максим Галайчук - Mypka_Max He's not staying the game IS shit. He's saying the is THE shit. Meaning good.
@@chrisketchum8042At least you're correcting that user to avoid confusion.

Memories man. I used to always want a Mario game (which I got later) but not stupid Wario! Haha but dude how I LOVED this game! :D
for gb in my opinion wario games were such better than marios
hey cutie
how could you call wario stupid?
Fantastic game on so many levels, work of gaming art. Music, gameplay, whatever-it's great...
Oh man. Such a good game!! :D
Oh my god...Those memories..... -crying-

When I got my Yellow Gameboy Color on my 6th birthday, this was the first game that went with it. Love it still!
My God... Where did my childhood go?

*THE REAL ORIGINS OF MARIO BROS.:*
Wario was appeared on March 12, 1972 as the Underground Crew Worker in Pipe Plumber Arcade game.
I can't believe I could do all this at 8 years old.
Even crazier I subconscious comeback 6 years later to find an old comment I posted. This game is really engraved in my childhood.
@@eddieleejoseph2998 :))))
This is the best game on the Gameboy.
James McGeachie wario land was good but super Mario land 2 was much better
@@paolotondo2463 not a chance. The Wario Land games (all of them) are better than than the Mario Land games
@Daniel Said Retana López disagree
@Daniel Said Retana López I don't hate Wario Land, it's just in my opinion there are better GB games out there
@Daniel Said Retana López If I have to be honest, I'm not really sure, although Super Mario Land 2 is high up there
a little tear is running down my face.. remembering my good old game boy times.
life was soo wonderful these days
When I was a kid, I found the OST and SFX scary, dunno why
damn you're right! I kinda found that the sounds were pretty scary too.
yes! And Alien was a nightmare)) and then.. Doom came)) nice times! world was better!
yume キャッチャー Maybe that's because Wario is a bad guy?
it's a pretty gloomy game for sure. Part of it's appeal.
The music during a few of the minecart stages was kinda creepy, not to mention the floating head/lava pit boss
OH..This is my favourite game during my child life...Thanks for making this video....Precious memory....
Thank you for helping remember part of my childhood. Thank you,

That's some pretty sick platforming, I must admit.
One of the first Game Boy games I completed and a true advert for the system. Over here in England we were definitely Sega country but the Game Boy was THE handheld system to have.
Still a big of Wario games and the whole character because of this game.
The rocket hat is the oldest surviving OP powerup in video game history.
Thanks for the memories and the nostalgia :)
I still have this kind of game and still working....it brings back old times playing this...
I love this game. A surprising amount of replay value for an original Game Boy game.
found my gameboy today, and it was still sitting in it :) so many memories :) and so much rage...

One of the best games in the Gameboy.

i feel like crying watching this and remembering my childhood. thanks mum and dad!

Heck, even his powerups -- the bull hat, the dragon hat, and the jet-pack hat - were just a bit cooler than that of his blue-and-red counterpart.
i used to play that game like a fanatic when i was a kid. i loved its innovation and difference to mario games.
this game always had such an awesome, chunky feel, hard to describe.
