Oh man, the nostalgia is strong. Almost feels like I have no responsibilities again. I might have never thought about this game again had I not seen this. What a mind blower, seriously.
The nostalgia is INSANE, I haven't seen or heard anything of this game in years, just watching this brings tears of joy to my eyes. Played this so much as a kid, one of my favorite Marios ever.
Man the soundtrack was so good - more than anything else, this music brings 1992 right back. Thanks for this! Also he makes the last level look sooooooo easy.
There's a lot of indie games that sort of design their platformers with this sort of spirit. You should try playing them instead of wishing you were 12 again.
Oda Swifteye Trust me it’s not the same The other games may have the same mechanics but nostalgia is one hell of a feeling The music, the enemies, the layouts, the powers. I get this same feeling over super Mario galaxy 1/2, Super Mario land 1/2, Mario kart Wii, new super Mario bros ds, and new super Mario bros wii, Kirby triple deluxe, and Kirby’s return to dreamland
Wow. This brings back amazing memories. We moved from Canada to Texas and would drive back to Canada to visit and stay places along the way. I had this game and it kept me busy for those days we spent driving. This game still is one of my favorites to this day. The music, unique maps and unique level designs, 1 ups and 1 up stations....super underrated. *How I wish there could be a remake!!!*
This game was such an improvement over the first super mario land that it almost looked like it was one generation ahead. Definitely makes a much better use of the GB hardware. I feel Super Mario Land 1 was developped while they weren't sure what the GB would really be capable of, while for SML2 they were aware of the GB's strengths and shortcomings and how to work around all this to make an impressive game.
the original mario land used some of the design documents for smb1, including scrapped airfighting stages, among numerous other changes, so mario land 1 is actually somewhat closer to what smb1 was going to be, than what smb1 ended up being.
28:14 I'd wait at the end of the level after the auto scroll was done so I could listen and jam out to the music. Here I am in 2020, a grown adult and I agree 100% with my younger self... it's still just as good I remember vidily when I was at the store picking out a new game. I happened to choose this one, knowing nothing about it and I am still happy unitl this day that I did and didnt miss out on it
oh boy, my childhood is right here, i never got to finish the game but im glad to see how it end here. definitely 1 of my fav childhood games. thanks for uploading here :)
That was the magic of the old-school games. Each of them would bring something different to the table (except Lost Levels as it was simply a troll version of the first game). Nowadays, it's nothing but rehashed games with the "New" SMB games (which are anything but new).
I love how the boss stage of Mario Zone references Nintendo's attempt at LEGO blocks called "N&B Blocks". You can even see N&B labeled on one of the blocks as an Easter Egg in one of the coin-filled sections of that level (at 58:28 ).
I love the Space Stage last level's music. You can also hear Totaka's Song on this one as well. To hear it, you must be on the Game Over Screen for 2 mins. and 30 seconds. A neat easter egg, huh? :) Still remember that easter egg after 6 years!
1:34:00 thats what i was waiting for all my childhood! Wondered for 17 years whats in the castle. Great memories. Really loved Tree Zone and Pumpkin Zone. Tree is my favourite.
I bought a 3DS earlier this week. I've got an urge to play this game again but I can't find my cartridge for it anywhere. Glad it's on the Nintendo shop. I just want to relive the nostalgia. I haven't played this game since I was a kid. This and Super Mario Land 1 were my first ever Mario games. Good times.
I love how the first level if vaguely traditional with it just being Pirahna plants, Goombas, and Koopas but after that level it's basically everything but that.
I remember getting this game as a kid so I could occupy myself during a coming roadtrip 2 days after, but ended up playing it so much in those 2 days and completed the game even before I went on the trip because of how much fun I had with it. I still replayed it during that trip. Good memories.
Wow this really brings me back....if only I knew what happened to my Gameboy...sigh... Thank you for putting this on here. Anyone else watching this during quarantine?
My first ever Game Boy game from my birthday in 1994. Truly one of the underrated classics. They definitely made a game 1000 times superior to Super Mario Land 1.
It really brings back memories. I remember that I couldn't get into the castle but could beat every other level - which is nice, because I have never actually been very good at video games, being more of a content tourist.

despite some horrid memories i had with this game during the gameboy pocket era, This game brings back so many precious memories I had playing it during the gameboy color era. I even remember playing this on my super game boy back in 2007 when I was reliving the 80s & 90s. now those there definitely the days because 2007 was a great year for reliving the 80s & 90s.
The sequel seems way more enhanced than the original. Koopas can hide in their shells, Mario has a world map, the graphics are enhanced and yet it's on the same old game boy just 3 years later. Gaming is a clever story, especially with Nintendo.
No one ever seems to use this tip I found out on my own on Day 1 that August day in 1994, but on the bonus stage, when you wait for the crane to go to the right, then go as far left as it can, hit the button, and at worst 95% of the time you will receive a 3-up. It only failed for me on average about 1 in 20 or 1 in 30 tries. All failures resulted in only a 1-up. 8:10 is an exact example of this, but I guess this guy knows all the 3-up patterns.
OMG i just gasped out of nostalgia when i saw these weird things you could climb on, the spikes, the bees, the crow, music ... like everything!!! this brought back stuff i totally forgot!
@cubex55 I prefer to see long play than speed run. Long play you get to see everything (all secrets that you weren't aware of). I found out some things in some games that I would have never guessed. Thanks for all the uploads man!
Neat, in the black & white version, 1-up shrooms are hearts and the fire flower gives Mario a little feather on his head. I never realized this as a kid. It's smart working around limitations!
I didn't have a Game Boy growing up, so I missed out on this. I played the first SML many times on my friends' Game Boy, and this is a huge improvement over the first game. Visually everything looks like a black and white NES Mario game, and even the sound effects are closer to the NES.
ok. Was this game before or after SMB3? Why have they not put aspects of tis game in other Mario games? Why no Gba update of this game? I am so impressed by this game!

This is the game I've just remembered I loved it it was difficult but one of the best under rated games ever on GB, remember playing this when borrowing it off my friend for the summer holidays
I remember stealing my older brothers Gameboy whenever he was at school so I could play, cuz he wouldn't let me. And this was one of his games! I think it may have been the first Mario game I ever played. What a goddamn masterpiece. That and Kirby's Dreamland 2.
I remember playing Super Mario Land 2 at a friend's house as a kid and I was fascinated. So I went with my grandma to the shop to buy it. Thank you for the NOSTALGIC ATTACK! I'm only 14 but somehow a Game Boy ended up In my hands when I was 6. I had this and a few other games. But I mostly played this. I lost that game boy and cartridge... thank God for emulation. I thought the game over screen was plain weird.
@infernoman999 the bell does many things. obviously it ends the level, but you can just hit the exit to end the level. when you hit the bell it initiates the crane mini-game. also it serves as a checkpoint.

It’s ok bro, I agree with everyone’s comments. This was also the first game I got for my Gameboy. I also get a little emotional, my parents made sacrifices to get this for me. Crazy how time flies, I’m 29 now but this game and it’s soundtrack are dear to my heart.
Such a great Mario game, it had a great world and was so different to the other games, one of the best gameboy games which seems to have been forgoten.
This was one of my favorites! I remember many long car trips spent playing this game. :)
I absolutely love the SML2 World Map and the actual worlds/environments themselves. pretty quirky and fun stuff!
What a nostalgia playing this game on our first interstate trips!

Super Mario land 2 was a creative new style mario game and making Wario the enemy brilliant!
I think that this game is very underrated
It is
It was stupidly popular when it came out. About the same as Links Awakening, iirc
i think this is a good game.

I always thought of this game as a very entertaining game and a true classic.
I love how the boss stage of Mario Zone references Nintendo's attempt at LEGO blocks called "N&B Blocks".
