FWIW, I got put on to 550 Parachute Paracord Cord Type III 7 Strand from a lawn mower forum. This variation (4mm or 5/32") is for a lawn mower but I also bought 3mm size for my 2 strokes. 550 means "breaking strength (550 lbs.)" & 7 refers to the number of strands. Haven't had to use the 3mm yet but 1 1/2 years later, the lawn mower rope shows no sign of deterioration. Plus it's very inexpensive & abundantly available, especially on ebay.
Thanks for this video. I inherited my dad’s old Husqvarna 61. It’s been sitting for 7 years with the same gas in it all that time. Gas smelled good in it and unbelievably it started. Took about 20 pulls then a very small shot of starting fluid though. Put fresh 92 non-ethanol in it, runs good. But then the entire starting rope came out in my hand on a pull. I could see it was not broken and had no visible knotted part. Head scratcher there to me. Could not see how it went back together. Looked at several Husqvarna rope replacement vids and nothing even close to similar mechanism until I saw yours. Worked like a charm. Did the super glue trick too just to insure rope retention. Thanks!
I bought a used husqvarna 20 years ago and I don't use a lot, just enough to cut 5 cords of wood a year then it sits the rest of the year. It always always always starts right up when it's time to cut wood.
We are so programmed to build with quality it’s understandable to think beefier (bigger) is better but obviously that’s not always true. Great video Don pointing out that sometimes bigger is not always better. Thanks man!

good vid Donny, I have seen plenty coming from repair shops that fit bigger "because it's better" and like you said the pulley handle soon goes loose. Great old saw the 266, I had one for years and a big mistake selling it. But it did give a youngster a good start
I broke my pull cord at the cottage and replaced the original with paracord and works fine. I was stuck and had nothing else around. The paracord has been there for 5 years now. Mabe a good idea to keep a length of cord in your saw kit.

That is a great tip and I need to find the tools I purchased to remove the bolts on the casing, but I have not had to do any work on most of my saws yet, but do have one which I have to work on now. Thanks for sharing this tip once again.
Nice video. All the experts say not to use gasoline to clean parts because of the safety issue but everyone does it. Not a good idea for smokers of course.
good tip. I've found a degreaser ( mean green) and a toothbrush works well to clean parts. Rinse with water. safer than using gas imo and it may damage the plastic parts.
Yeah I don't know if the pull starter that I initially replaced on my 3hp Briggs and Stratton push mower was OEM or not but it broke again & the genuine 299948 part that I recently replaced it with operates very smoothly & effortlessly compared to the previous one. I did lube the shaft up with molybdenum disulphide grease with the previous one but I used lithium grease this time. I had just replaced the piston rings last Christmas Eve & ever since summer has got a bit cooler & wetter towards mid to late February,the dead lawn has a sprung back to life meaning I've had a chance to run the engine in. It's going a lot better than it used to & where it used to burn through 200 mLs of oil in 1 hour now it uses none,I fitted aftermarket Stens piston rings which are doing a good job in that lawnmower !

Don, What's a good rule of thumb as to the lenght the pull rope should be if you don't have the original rope to compare to. For chainsaws, weedeaters, mowers and generators. Thank for the always informative videos.
You could probably use Dony's knowledge in reverse. Take your replacement cord and wrap it around the pulley until the space is full to the rim. That's the maximum length for that cord and that pulley. Otherwise, as he said somewhere, about 30 inches, which is a good estimate for your arm's length of pull.
I have a question about a B and S snowblower motor 20m314-0110-e1 I can not get the spark plug to spark! I have tried two brand new coils, new plugs. No spark. I cant find a low oil shut off Is it possible for a magnet to lose enough magnetism, that it wont spark? I have checked the valve lash, all good. Any ideas?? Thankyou
No. A #4 rope is 4/32" or 1/8". 1/8" = 3.175mm A #5 rope is 5/32". 5/32" is 3.96875mm. Stihl has metric diameter starter rope available for use in their equipment.
Don, you mentioned you lube the spring after fixing the recoil. Any particular lube you recommend? Since watching your videos, I have stocked up on white lithium grease and never seize lubricant. Both are great especially in cold weather climates. Thanks!

Husqvarna XP chainsaws such as your 266 take a 5 rope because of high compression . Putting a small rope on a high compression chainsaw such as my 266 288 395 and 3120 would break in a week
The recoil mechanism on the Husqvarna 266's is way too weak for the displacement of the engine IMO , thankfully most newer saws have a compression release.
So far i've been lucky with my old B&S mower, it was a second hand mower when i bought it a long time ago. Now i've said that, it will brake just to annoy me ha ha :-D
I knew that as soon as I saw it. It's a chain saw, not a lawn mower. I bought a roll of both so I never run out of rope. Guys usually grab the only thing they have on hand.Seen it been there, dont do that.
One important thing u should always rememeber about chainsaws... a customer told me this. . . If its gas powered, they all take batteries, you just gotta find em. They have batteries because how else would the ignition system work. I couldnt respond to him in any other way then saying... put a 9v battery in ur gas tank when its empty. Hopefully natural selection will do the rest. This guy seriously was dead stuck on that. He thought i was a stupid tech for not knowing where it was.
