      Nunca tuve una Winchester 30-30

      Llevo mucho tiempo buscándola ,

I bought one of these when I was 16 and hunted with it until I went to the army. In the army I learned to love the receiver sight so I put one on my winchester when I got out of the army. Every body was going to the high powered bolt action rifles at that time so I traded my Winchester for a Remington 700 in 308. I put a scope on it and started hunting. It didn't take long before I realized that for where I hunt the 30 30 was perfect and the 308 was not needed and the scope got in my way. I finally got another 30 30, put a receiver sight on it and have never wanted anything else. I am 66 years old now and still see no need for a rifle other than the Winchester 94.

+Terry Dean I agree the Marlin 336 is a great rifle too. I found one a couple of years ago that was made in 1984 that looks like brand new. It showed absolutely no wear with not a mark on it. I bought it and will give it to my grandson for his high school graduation present in two years.

My grandfathers pre-64 is chambered in .32 and it sure is special. It’s put down many deer in the woods around Oil City, PA. I took it out with him long ago hunting near Pithole. No deer that day, but that was the last day he made it out into the woods. It’s a piece of magic. The clacking of that lever gives me goosebumps.

My Winchester 94 in 30 WCF circa 1938 still shoots extremely accurately. My first deer rifle for Pennsylvania Whitetails my Dad bought for me used back in 1967 along with the complete Woolrich Outfit and those dang rubber steel shank rubber boots that kept my feet frozen like blocks of ice. I always toughed it out and brought home plenty of deer to feed the family.

I have my grandfather's Model 1894 .32 W.S. with 26" Octagon barrel. The serial # puts it at 1908. I killed my first deer with this rifle, I love it and will never get rid of it...again. In 1987, I sold it for $200 to help with college tuition, not really understanding the value of the rifle or it's sentimental value to my family. I started looking for it a few years ago, and thanks to the Internet, I found it last December at a Cabella's in Michigan. The serial # was a match to the records my dad kept on all his firearms. It cost me $1600 to get it back, and was worth every penny. My dad and I have taken it out and shot it a few times since getting it back, and for a 106yr old rifle, it still shoots great!!!

  • @marlinsmith7830

In my opinion, the dropping floor plate is one of the things that makes the 94 such a great carry rifle in the woods. The receiver is short from top to bottom. I’ve always carried my 1939 vintage 94 with my hand wrapped around the receiver. It’s the perfect balance point and easy to carry. That design element helps create the classic line when the lever is closed. You can spot a 94 in a lever gun line up instantly. To me, it has the most iconic lever gun line. That dang floor plate design was brilliant.

Unfortunately I bought a 94 classic with a ridiculous 26inch barrel, it's way too top heavy and I have no fucking clue who's idea it was to design it that way. It needs a bipod and scope tbh and that takes away the entire point of the rifle. Disappointed in my purchase to say the least

I shot my first moose in Alaska in 1982 with it. My dad and grandpa shot their first moose with it. In the 1950’s. I also have the 1892 Win 44-40 cal mfg in 1914, the 38-40 mfg in 1916, the 32-20 mfg in 1912, the 32 special mfg in 1906 & the 25-20 mfg in 1917. I inherited a model 94 from my grandpa and looking at the serial number, I estimated it to be made in the mid to late 70's. Once I adjusted the sights and cleaned it up, it shoots like a champ! It is true the finish doesn't hold up well, primarily on the feed tube, but still love it!

Sometimes things just work out....Last week I walked into one of the local pawn shop/gun shops and spotted a pristine Model 94 on the rack and had to give it a look over. At first I thought it was a late U.S. production model but suddenly (OK, two days later) it occurred to me that there was no cross bolt or tang mounted safety on the rifle....This after I bought it! And low and behold, after I checked the serial number against three different data basis on the internet, discovered it to be of 1971 production....Pretty darn close to the one I had back in my teens....I'm 62 now....And this one feeds like a champ! I think I'm going to have to hang onto it and shoot and hunt with it as often as possible! Take care, and keep up the great videos!

The 30/30 smokeless cartridge was a revolutionary moment in firearms history. Prior to this lever action repeaters were all chambered in pistol calibers with lower velocity black powder. If you wanted a higher caliber you had to go with a bolt action or single shot.....still in black powder. The smokeless powder with higher velocity in a repeater was fantastic. There is documented story of an Arizona Ranger is eastern Arizona attempting to approach the camp of 3 wanted men when a gunfight broke out. They were armed with older rifles with black powder so every time they shot he could see where they were from the puffs of white smoke. The ranger had a new 30/30 model 94 and was able to fire keeping concealed and killed all 3 suspects without suffering any injury. This was and still is a fantastic weapon.....

MrAzrancher Yeah, a lot of the leverguns were essentially pistol caliber rifles, by today's standards, the Henry, the 1866, the 1873, the 1892, etc. Exceptions were the 1876 and the 1886. They were chambered in some powerful big bore cartridges, but they WERE black powder. The .30-30 was, and IS, definitely powerful for the times and still does the job for most hunting, at least east of the MIssissippi, where most deer are taken at moderate ranges.

MrAzrancher Not all lever action rifles p to the model 94 were chambered for pistol calibers. What about the model 1876 which fired 45-65 45-75 and 45-95 All were black powder but were most certainly not pistol caliber rounds. Then in 1886 we got the winchester /browning 1886 which was a lever action repeater shooting 45-70 government rounds. The 30-30 or 30 w.c.f was the first smokless round produced for a lever action american round.

Just a tip since I've been looking into buying one of these - since 92 they switched back to machined parts and solid pins. So a modern model 94 should have the same build quality as a pre 64, probably even better, since modern CNC machining is more accurate than what they used back then. Added bonus is that they use angle ejection as well so you can use a receiver mounted scope if that's important to you.

As a matter of fact, the ones made in 44 mag, 45, etc are very nice especially in the trapper model, and they usually command more cash than your pre 64 30-30.

My very first rifle was the Winchester 94. I got it when I was 14 years old (I'm 46 now). A week after getting it I killed my first 2 deer (two 7 pointers) in the same morning with 3 shots. I still remember it like it was yesterday.
It was a frosty morning and I woke up late. By the time I got to where I was hunting it was about 8am. As I was walking in, I saw 3 deer (2 were bucks and one doe). I never took the time to see which was bigger. All I saw was horns, lol. I shot the first one and he dropped like a rock.
The other 2 took off running and for some reason, the buck stopped and looked right at me. I had another round in by then and I was so excited I shot over his back. He took off and I jacked another round in, put it on his front shoulder and squeezed the trigger. He tumbled like a cartwheel and kicked a few times and that was it.
I was so excited I was shaking like a leaf and my teeth were chattering (I wasn't a bit cold either), lol. I ran to the first one, grabbed his horns and started counting. 7 points....WOOHOOO!!! I ran to the next one, grabbed his horns and started counting. 7 points.....huh?? I counted again, yep, 7 points. I ran back to the first deer and counted.....WOW!! I can't believe it!! Two deer and both were 7 points, lol. Believe it or not, I still have that gun. I still use it and it has killed many many deer over the years and it will kill many more. I'll never sell it even though I have other rifles that I've bought that do the job too. This gun has a special place in my heart. It's a shame Winchester stopped making them.

Nearly every one I saw sighted in would do a 2"-3" group at 100 yards with the right ammo, and most shot right to point of aim. My Dads Favorite Rifle. His first was a 25-20. Sometime in the late 40’s or early 50’s He bought the 30-30. My
Grandfather used a 94 in 32 special and was known to have killed eight impressive Bucks in a short period of time on top of Bald Hill below Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County. As a young Man He had been in the Italian Army at Adwa. Being able to buy such a rifle and be trusted to possess them and hunt to help feed a large Family was something many immigrants of humble origins appreciated. Hunting was a family affair and included many friends. My Father in Law was Born Here to Slavonian Immigrant parents. In those Days everyone used 32 specials, 30-30’s trenta trenta’s , 25-35 also a good one and still used very effectively. The 25-20 was under powered but like the 22 can be very effective if You know how to stalk and shoot well. Everyone used open sights and carried Binoculars. Some binoculars were very old “ Coke Bottle” types. My Father in Law Grew up being Fluent in Slavonian and loved the heavy accents and old world names of the Many Italian Immigrants who settled North of San Francisco. He related how a very nice buck was running along a Hillside in Cascade Canyon and other’s were shouting to another hunter to shoot Him. The Hunter kept looking through His binoculars and complaining He could not tell if it was a legal Buck. That is When My Grandfather brought it down with a single well placed shot from a longer distance, afterwards in a booming voice with Heavy Italian Accent saying “ You look tru de glasses and watch Me shoot de Deerrrrrr. Don’t get Me wrong , we never hunted with anyone who did not bring binoculars. Using scoped rifle’s as binoculars could get the guilty party run off. Neck shots were preferred. A deer hanging with large areas carved out due to bullet damage like broken and splintered ribs and bloodshot meat would attract derision from fellow Hunters who might say things Like “ you couldn’t hit a bulls ass with a wet sack” or “you emptied the gun on that one”. Savage came out with the Model 99 and that too was and is popular. I went from the old Winchester pump gallery style 22 to a Colt marketed Sako bolt rifle in .223 that I have taken many Deer with. Then My Dad bought My Brother and I Remington 700 BDL’s in 6mm for a hunt in Oregon. We use them interchangeably with Our 223’s on Blacktails . For mule Deer we use Ruger 77 in 300Win mag. We have both killed Many fine bucks with those as well. Its good to bring along a a old open sighted rifle to use on those snowy days when a flurry can distort the view through a scope. I bring A 300 Savage that I inherited from one of My Uncles . I will sometimes use a 25-35 that I inherited from another of My Dads Brothers. I also like a Marlin 30-30 that a old family Friend had inherited from a friend of His who passed on and He then gave to Me. When I hear songs like Whiskey Myer’s Ballad of a Souhtern Man or FJ Outlaws Standing My Ground I can Relate.

Love your Vids. You are a wonderful historian, story teller and shooter. John does great video work.
You just reviewed my favorite rifle. I have owned a number of variants and calibers and love them. Pre 64s, big bores, Angle ejects and post 64s. They are all great.
I'm in the Northeast and chase big bucks. All of my deer hunting is from the ground and most of it in in thick woods. It's the perfect light weight, fast handling, fast cycling, quick pointing woods rifle for still hunting and jumping big bucks in thick woods.
I own many rifles including two Model 70 featherweights. I always grab a 94 for hunting unless I'm posting up in one of my spots where 300 or 400 yard shots are possible.
My absolute favorite is a 94 Big Bore AE in .307 caliber. The ten point 140 class buck hanging on the wall has no idea his demise was at the hand of an antiquated gun firing an under powered round - and from a post 64 version to boot!
I also have a scoped 94 AE deluxe in 30-30 which I also love. Buying an AE takes care of the issue you addressed about having to side mount the scope. The AE's allow for a top mounted scope and are wonderful set ups. I like putting vintage 1-5 power post reticle scopes on mine to help my old eyes but still allow for the needed point and shoot aporoach when still hunting.
If you hunt from the ground in thick woods or forest there is no better tool for the job.

Nice to see a fellow mainer here, I'm looking for a model 94 right now to replace my savage axis (I've come to the conclusion a lever gun would be better for me) I hunt In Newburg (about a half hour from bangor)

Exact same thing here, mine was my dads 94, still shoots great. I went and bought a Henry .50 lever action and love it just as much.

I have a model 94 made in 1955 that my grandpa left me with many others when he passed, my favorite gun in my collection. Thank you John Browning and thank you Mr Hickock for the review!

I purchased a Winchester 94 around 1972. It was a good quality rifle, 30-30. Ended up having to sell it a couple years ago, and was very sorry I did. Wish I still had it, but circumstances didn’t allow that. Nice gun though.

I’m so happy I told my grandfather this was my favourite gun and I remembered him telling me when I was little that he had guns but I forgot by now. But he took me downstairs and showed me this exact gun. So happy

I also own a pre-64 version. My great grandfather purchased it in 1956. Has a peep sight and flip up rear sight. Perfect for deer hunting.

Bought one in Woolworth, In 1973 for $75, they had it on sale!. Kicks like a mule even with a rubber butt pad.

      sailor123ize Really?
Im used to firing Shotguns and 30-06 and 303. I fired my 30-30 for the 1st time waiting for a big kick and only heard a bang. I was like “huh”? Very little recoil.
Approx 10 foot pounds of recoil compared to 20ish for 30-06, and anywhere from 20ish to 50ish for a shotgun
