My father passed away in 2018 and left me his guns. He hadn't hunted in decades but had some great guns in the safe. My mother wanted me to take them and I am thrilled one of them was (is) the beloved Winchester Model 94 30/30. I am fortunate also that he had it's little brother the 9422 and I cherish both. Thanks dad, miss you and am proud to be the guardian of your wonderful firearms.

My first centerfire rifle was a winchester 94 trapper carbine that I bought when I was 15 using money I earned mowing lawns. I still own that rifle.

At the gun store I work at, we have a used Model 94 that was manufactured in 1904 and it's pretty much in mint shape. It's one of the most beautiful rifles i've ever seen. Such a privilege to holy a piece of history in my hands.

such a beautiful rifle! so much history behind it. love this channel. i can still remember the days when hickock's table had a wooden top before he became famous and now has a leather hide top table. celebs.... that's fame for you....

The 30-30 sure does a number on 2 liters. Those metal targets across the hill went down with some noticeable force. From watching many of your videos, one can learn quite a bit about the ballistics of various calibers. It has always left an impression on me when I watch a watermelon literally explode when it is hit with a .44 magnum: the Ruger super blackhawk hunter video shows this. Thanks for all your videos!!!

  • @alancroft4231

fantastic shooting with open sights, free standing with no support, and wearing glasses.
I was born in 1952 and found a 94 made in 52, so picking it up this week.I think the 94 is without a doubt the best all around rifle. I have many different makes and calibers and always come back and use my 94, light, short and well balanced and so easy to carry. now to shoot like you or even half as good will be my next challenge. Also love your videos. very well put together, you certainly know your stuff, all ways a pleasure..

My first rifle was a 30-30 Marlin and it took down many dear in my lifetime. Not too long ago I bought a pre-64 Winchester and both are my favorite hunting rifles. I love shooting with optics but the 94 is just too beautiful the way it is to dare place a scope on it. It means I rarely hunt with it but I would rather keep it in its natural state then mess with perfection.

I have owned a pre-'64 Model 94 since 1961! Although I have a very nice scoped 30-06 the old 30-30 is my "go to " rifle. For some reason when I shoulder it my eye and the sights are always perfectly lined up. Never have to jockey around. It handles fast, is light to carry. On those occasions I carried my heavier scoped rifle I missed getting a shot off because I had the gun slung over my shoulder. By the time I got it in battery it was too late. But with the 94 I always hand carry it and can quickly bring it to bear, eye and sights aligned! Over the years I have taken Mule Deer, Pronghorns, and Elk out to 200+ yards. I have total trust in it!

The classic Win 94 in 30/30, your right that statement pretty much sums it up. That one is in fine shape and it has one of the first tactical sights ever invented :), the buckhorn sight with brass bead.
I think the transfer safety bar added to the 94 later took away from the classic look.

Hickok...thanks for all the memories, lessons and history on so many firearms. There are a lot of other 'shooters' on TH-cam, but most are just wannabees, when you're the original! Now you just need a classic Marlin 1936 or an early Marlin 336 to compare it to. I have had both guns over the years. I have had something like three pre-64 Model 94's (two were 1894's) one SRC in .25-35, a .38-55 rifle and a .30-30 carbine and I think three post '64 Model 94's but I have also owned an older Marlin 336 Texan (straight lever version) in .35 Remington and I just snagged a Glenfield Model 30 half mag .30-30 which is nothing more than a Marlin 336 with a birch stock. The Marlins have a couple advantages over the Winchesters in that most 336's came later on drilled and tapped which make them great for receiver sights like Skinner, and the rifling makes them better with jacketed rounds, cast bullets can be used as long as they are oversize a little and are harder than 13-14 BHN. Both though make fine hunting rifles and you would be hard pressed to find a gun that can't put out rounds pretty quickly.

Bought my '94 band new a bit over a quarter century ago... After Winchester had quietly phased-out most of the 1964 "updates", but before they let the lawyers start designing damned silly safeties onto the thing.
Nothing I have is better for point-and-shoot inside of 200 paces. Just falls to the shoulder with the sights already lined-up. Accuracy does improve with good thutty-thutty handloads though, especially if you want to push the range a little. As with many older cartridges, I think the factory loadings are a little undercharged for fear of you trying to shoot them in your great-grandpa's rusted-out antique.

I have a 72 model. Nothing fancy, looks a little rough. Deadly accurate at 150 yards. I love that gun!

+SUGAR XYLER No, I just recognize evil for what it is and refuse to be a victim. How do you think you have the nice, comfortable life you have, by the goodness of mankind? No, because of struggle and effort by hard working men an women. I have NEVER aimed a gun at anyone but I won't hesitate in the face of evil. The MODERN world has removed you from the facts of survival.

@@SUGAR_XYLER why are you watching gun videos, then?
If you abhor violence, watch inherently non violent topics unlike firearms.

That is a beautiful piece. I have wanted a 30-30 all my life pretty much. Maybe one of these years I'll be able to afford one. I'm sure it won't be a pre 64 sadly enough.

Good shooting! I think your correct about it heating up. Twenty one shots with that size powder charge in a short time will do it.
