    I never understand why people complain about plastic lens hoods. I'd much rather have a lighter, more flexible lens hood, that will actually deform when a lens is struck or dropped, rather than rigidly transmit the force into the lens. Plastic lens hoods any day of the week.
    Oh, and a plastic lens hood will never scratch anything that it lives in your bag with.

    • @onegrapefruitlover
      @onegrapefruitlover 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I agree. I was reluctant to use the metal hood on my Fuji 60mm 2.4 until I realized that its mount is plastic.
      A strong blow will most likely break the hood's mount and not the lens.

      Metal on metal will cause abrasion whereas plastic on metal abrasion will be greatly reduced. Thus maintain the value of your investment, if you consider gear an investment.

      and it's not a common plastic...Fujifilm is using a very good ABS plastic which is found in many design furniture companies .

      Good point by others about plastic not scratching equip in bags, but in a honesty Asda shopping bags are not good practice. Haha, just a joke.

      Sacha Martin I have at nauseam. To my eye, I much prefer the rendering of the 56. The 23, 35, and 50 f2’s have a very specific rendering that I can’t quite describe. The 56, 90, 50-140, and the 23 1.4 have something unique imo. But these are real world portrait, street, and landscape shots. And this is also coming from a guy who loves to shoot with the 7artisans 35 1.2 , various vintage lenses and a xe1/xpro1. So I guess I am bias towards lenses that produce a less than tack sharp image with interesting character.

    Thanks for reviewing this one, looks like a gem. I don't see anything wrong with the out-of-focus areas or bokeh... at short telephoto lengths, f2 is fine for most use. Even the 16-55 2.8 can give subject separation at 55mm that clients are happy with.

    Just received this lens and realized no mentions the delayed playback when focused at mfd. Focusing further out the playback speed acts normal. I'm running SanDisk fast cards so I doubt that's the problem. A lot of forum pointed this out that it is merely how the lens is engineered "safe mode" and there hasn't been firmware updates to mitigate this issue. Basically the lens has to retract focus before the camera allows playback which is odd as I own most xf lenses that don't do that. I'm assuming only the fujicrons are built like this. Obviously this is one of my first purchases of the highly praised cron collection.
    Anyhow small annoyance, everything else seems to fall in line as far as speed and image quality. Thought people should know before purchasing is it can be jarring to find out thinking the lens was broken.

    I was wondering if you might consider doing a comparison of the Fuji Xt-3, and the Fuji Xt-4, or the Sonya6400 and the Sony a6600. These cameras seem to be almost identical except the one has IBIS and the other does not. I’ve always wondered if the IBIS effects the image sharpness. I personally would be surprised if having a floating sensor didn’t effect the image quality in some way. Also, I’ve noticed that the very sharpest lenses, from a manufacturer, always seem to not have image stabilization. It would seem that that might apply to camera bodies as well. The sharpest image might come from a camera body without IBIS. Thanks for your consideration.

    I have the fuji 23 - 35 - 50 and 90mm f2 WR lenses. This 50 mm f2 and the 90 mm f2 are very close to each other in terms of sharpness. The 90 mm f2 naturally has more bokeh.

    • @TheMistermike87
      @TheMistermike87 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Theo GT the 90 also has way more compression vs the 50. I have the 50-140, but prefer the 90 more and more due to size and and extra stop of light. My go to for weddings is the 23 f2 and the 56 1.2 with the 90 in the bag just in case.

    - Perfect Image Quality
    - Weather Sealed
    - Small & Lightweight
    - Excellent Build Quality
    ...
    - Still thinks its overpriced.
    Not to be a Fuji fanboy, but I've seen lenses that are much larger & heavier, have less features (weather sealing), and perform worse wide open than this lens, yet cost WAAAY more.
    I suppose one way you could look at it is that this lens IS Fuji's (roughly) standard 80mm lens in their lineup, since all of their lenses are only designed for APC and not full-frame, making "50mm" kind of meaningless when you think about it. The 35mm f2 WR is more the 50mm in the lineup.

Both my XH1 and Xpro1 (yes it's ancient) feel well made and rugged - the same has to be said of the XF series lenses both mechanically and optically. However, for someone on more of a budget I have to say that optically the XC glass is more than adequate, suffering mainly from a more plasticky build.

    • @onegrapefruitlover
      @onegrapefruitlover 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you want a better sensor and the acros film simulation, get an X-T20.
      If you want a far better EVF, separate SD and battery compartments and weather sealing, go with the X-T1.
      The difference in the EVF's is huuge.
      I was in the same dilemma as you and the EVF pushed me over to the X-T1. Such a lovely piece of gear.
      Btw, if you plan to ever shoot tethered, check if the software you plan to use is compatible with the X-T20. No one talks about that but I found that it has very little tethering compatibility.

    Lol, calling $450 expensive for an autofocus lens with weather sealing that performs this well AND includes a lens hood is kind of funny. Take a look at all the Voitglander 50mm lenses that are manual focus only, don't ship with a lens hood, and are all around the $1k mark :-P And that brand is often nicknamed the "poor mans leica" lens brand, to put even that into perspective.
    On that note though, I would love to see you review the Voitglander 50mm Apo-lanthar lens (which comes in an e-mount version). Another e-mount lens from them I'd be curious in seeing tested would be their 50mm Nokton f/1.2 ASPH lens. I shoot M mount (which both these lenses come in) but since I know you have a sony camera and not an m mount camera, these two lenses in particular come in an e-mount version.
    Btw, you're my go-to lens reviewer! You do such a stellar and thorough job. Keep up the amazing work!

      Edwin Canlapan man I gotta tell you. The whole Fuji XF lineup is insanely sharp and well worth the prices. Some of the lenses (like the 16 1.4) are so clinically perfect, I tend to gravitate back to my vintage lenses to get more character in my pictures. But if you’re looking for sharp as nails at a good price point, the 14 and everything else in the lineup is just fine. That being said, I think the only lens that has a unique character out of the lineup is the 56 1.2.

      My experience of Sony OEM lenses is that they were dreadful even pricy FE ones. I got shot of my Sony kit lick split and got Fuji. Maybe things have improved a tad but Fuji is way better. Lenses are, like, stratospheric whereas Sony, well......least said, soonest mended.

    • @fellowcitizen
      @fellowcitizen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, I'm still baffled when anyone asserts that Fuji is expensive - I mean there is due diligence to find and time for discounts, of course, but Fuji lenses are certainly cheaper than Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, Leica, Zeiss, Voigtlaender. Sigma's APS-C lenses are cheaper, though, as are some "consumer-grade" lines - yet, Fuji have XC lenses which are almost free with cameras, too.

    • @LeoInterHyenaem
      @LeoInterHyenaem 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fellowcitizen Agreed. I, too, can't fathom notions of exorbitant costs of Fuji lenses. Compared to the competition, Fuji lenses are delightfully affordable.

    How does the performance compare with the 16-55 @ 50mm?

    • @fellowcitizen
      @fellowcitizen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to the measurements at LensTip there is no comparison; the XF50 is vastly sharper at every aperture, centre + edge vs the zoom @55mm. Though, there may be other image qualities for which the zoom excels, and it is optimised for the wide-end.
