I have considered this exact lens due to its size and focal length, however in the end I went with Voigtlander 27mm F2.0, as I don't really need/want AF, while I could always use faster aperture. I also have an excellent experience with Voigtlander lens on micro 4/3.

I have the mk 1 version and paired with a smaller body, it makes for a compact setup. Glad to see you enjoying the shooting experience on the Fuji!

Peter, thank you for the review and information. The XF27mm R WR resolves just fine on the 40mp FUJI XT-5. I shoot that personally. It is also listed on the FUJI lens compatibility chart for the 40mp XT-5 and XH-2. Like you, I am a huge fan of this focal length for street, travel, and environmental work.

Good to know that it works on X-T5 fine. It has more megapixels so the quality is enouhg for that too.

Excellent lens with my XT2 and XT10, really covers the focal range of the new and market crazy ,relatively recently released updated fixed lens model.

I have that lens for use on my X Pro-3 and it is superb, super light setup and being a pancake, doesn't block the optical viewfinder when using that. Some time back I also added the TTArtisan 28mm f5.6 Leica Summaron knock off, as I was keen to experience a manual zone focusing lens for street use. This is not at the level of the Fuji optically and is slower, but it has its own characteristics that I find pleasing with Black & White and also the film simulations where additional grain is added, maybe the lower contrast adds to the authenticity of these simulations (I compare back to back with actual scanned slide film and it is remarkably similar). Being a zone focussing specialist, it can be dialled in and used with the optical viewfinder, so no AF hunting or noises, just point and shoot silently, while being able to see outside the frame! Try the XF 18mm f2.0 lens if you haven't already, that is probably my fav of all the Fuji primes I've tried to date.

I totally agree with your assessment of the lens. I got this lens when it became available. I really the aperture ring and that it is weather sealed. But for me it fits under my cycling jacket easily on my X-Pro 2. I feel that the 40 mm view is very reminiscent of the old Kodak plastic cameras. I will take a look at that Black-mist filter. I make a bad habit of loosing the lens caps (nothing a 3D printer cannot solve, but I love that the hood does an excellent job of protecting the lens. Thank you as that was a great presentation.

I have liked the mist filter on this lens. It gives that nice smoother look. It goes well with film simulations.

Hey Peter!! Hope all is well! I like that fuji pancake lenses as well, I don't have it though, because for my street photography I use my MFT gear with the Lumix 20mm f1.7 pancake. Still like you, 40mm focal length is also my go to field of view for street photography, altough for street photography sometimes I do miss the Fuji sims jpegs, when I shoot digital.
All the best to you, have a great weekend!!

A lot of these smaller/cheaper fuji lenses are fantastic. Used the 23mm and 50mm F2 "fujicron" lenses for a long time before moving up to thier f 1.4 brethren for the sharpness bump. Still have thier place though since I can carry 2 or 3 in my pocket.

I just purchased the Mi version of this lens. This lens was purchased for the size and weight. I have the 23 and 35mm crons. The 27mm lens is 1/2 way between the two. If I need to zoom I can do that with my feet.
This lens is now on my XE1. I can put this combination in my jacket pocket. This lens is reasonably fast but when shooting on the street I typically stop the lens down to between 5.6 and 8. The lens has the virtue of being relatively inexpensive.
I love the kit 18-55mmm lens. Now that I have the 23, 27, and 35mm lenses my lens needs are met. I don’t see any more lenses being purchased. Now I’m saving for the X100VI.

I bought the Nikkor Z 40mm f2 for the same reason. I assigned the aperture control to the focus ring. This is my classic way of travelling. Not quite as compact as Fuji, of course.

Great review Peter, thanks. I think I may get this lens for my XT5, the clicky aperture ring is important to me, an essential part of the retro dial experience as I usually shoot aperture priority or manual. I also have the GRIIIx and really like 40mm equivalent focal length for a photo walk around the city.

One of my favorite setups for going light is the OM5 + Lumix 20mm f1.7. Although my hands are big, I feel comfortable using the OM5 without needing an additional grip (I still have a very comfortable and economical aluminum grip).
I have to admit that I think the Fujifilm xs20 is a beautiful camera. I was always attracted to Fujifilm (my favorite slide film was, of course, Velvia), but one of the attractions that caught me in Olympus (now OM System), among others, is its sensor cleaning system and its image stabilizer...

@@ForsgardPeter Thanks Peter, moreover I use the recipes with the HEIF format, much better than the jpg. I save a lot of time in post production. My way of working is as follows: A film recipe, rear screen off, no checking during the shoot, do not look at the photos at home for 3 or 4 days (development simulation) It's fun, it's a bit of an analog use in a digital camera.
      Merci Peter.

I own the 27mm and had the 23mm on loan from a friend.. The 23mm is clearly the superior quality lens, but I still prefer the size and look of the 27mm. When taking photos close to random strangers the 27mm doesn't attract as much attention as most other lenses including the 27mm. Imo, there is not much differences between these 23/35 f2 lenses compared to the f1.4 lenses and even the zooms in terms of size - they are all very obvious to the bystanders and that makes them an issue on the street. The pancake lens is different from those. I think if it was not for this stealthiness, I would own the 35mm f1.4 and the 16mm f1.4. Those two lenses are perfect and amazing. Instead I use the 27mm on my xt4 (sometimes swaping for the kit 18-55mm for video or more specific subjects) and the 35mm f0.95 ttartisan on my xpro2, making it the perfect night photography manual camera. Again the size of that ttartisan weighed by that huge aperture is great!

I owned a Fuji XT-100. It was the best entry level camera I ever owned, but I couldn't afford the Fuji macro lens at that time ($1600 Canadian), so I sold my Fuji gear and bought an M4/3 camera. Nowadays, Fuji has dropped their lens prices.
