Arguably the greatest ending in all of cinema. True art never fades...
George Valley City Lights and Paris, Texas have the most touching endings in my opinion.
It's right up there, for sure.
Also Notte di Cabiria, which is an homage to this.
@paul w I actually haven't seen it since 1979, and I hadn't seen City Lights at that point so I didn't know about the connection. Just watched it and I see what you mean. Though for me, it doesn't pack the emotional wallop of City Lights or Cabiria.
That ambiguity is immense. Judith and Holofernes by Gentileschi is certainty, Dancer in the Dark by von Trier is certainty, but Kafka exists in doubt, Kazimir Malevich’s realm is doubtful.
This film takes you all the way through love and leaves you empty on the other side because beyond your love of the other (person) there is the ambiguity that they may love you otherwise all of your faults, or they may not. And anyone who has loved feels that ambiguity.
That ambiguity leaves this as maybe the best film people have created with only Vertov, Eisenstein (has anyone actually seen Bezhin Meadow?) and Welles (but for Ambersons, not Kane) knocking on that door.
Chaplin’s lesson is simple, which is why he is one of the greatest of film artists, love with every fiber of your being, or don’t love at all. And that is how every character in every film he ever made exists.
That moment when she takes his hand, and just from the touch, she realizes who he is: suddenly the entire film takes a turn to a place you never imagined. Sends shivers up my spine.
Charlie said he didn't actually act in this scene, he said the moment was so powerful he felt like he was outside of himself looking in. A truly magical but so incredibly human scene. Love this movie so much could talk about it forever!

I just came from a music video called Love is Blue - Charlie Chaplin. It's even more beautiful.
Not only one of the greatest, most poignant endings, but Chaplin is able to convey so many emotions on his face in that brief fade at the end: love, happiness, fear, joy, sadness - all at the same time. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone else who had had that ability. Just one of the greatest bits of acting, ever.

That's true. But don't forget the change in facial expression on Virginia Cherrill's face the moment she realizes the truth. Given the fact that re-shooting this scene over and over again must have been living hell for her, the result is for the ages. For me personally, it is only beaten by Max von Sydow's mood swing in "Pelle the Conqueror" when his son tells him that his love interest's husband who had been presumed lost at sea had just returned home and he realizes in a second that his one shot at some happiness in life has been shattered.
Charlie said when he made this ending, he wasn't acting... It came from another place, he felt like he was outside looking in. A truly magical ending, love this movie so much could talk about it forever!
Laughed so hard through the whole movie, but found my face suddenly covered with tears at this ending scene. Never experienced this in any other movies. Charlie you are true master.

... and its so hard to find an actor (a humorist) who can make you laugh, yet switch your emotions to a beautiful loving ending as charles did... what a tremendous gifted actor he was.

There’s so many beautiful things about this scene but for me it’s the look on Charlie’s face. You can feel everything he’s feeling: The fear that she won’t recognise him, the anticipation as she begins to understand, and the glorious glee he feels as she says “yes, I can see now”.
Chaplin was truly the greatest of the greatest!
That face at the end of movie is the most realistic happiness i have seen in a movie.
The finest four minutes in motion picture history, never fails to bring a tear to my eye no matter how many times I see it.

that last shot of chaplins face might be the greatest piece of acting in all of cinema. so many emotions, so much conveyed in so little.
What a statement, that a movie from nearly 90 years in the past can promote such a heart rendering scene recognizable as great even by today’s standards. It only reinforces my opinion that Chaplin remains as the greatest actor of all time.
It is already 90+ years ago. They were filming for more than 2 years and it was finally released in 1931.
I saw this film for the very first time some years ago, together with my nine years old grandchild, a girl. I don't remember exactly when in it I started to cry, but I remember I tried to hide for her I was doing so. That was impossible, and she looked at me and said : Why are you crying, grandad ? I tried to explain, but I don't belive she understood the reason. And now I saw this scene again but this time alone, and started crying again. What a great movie. What a great man. And woman.

“Yes, i can see now”. So many ways it can be understood. A masterpiece of movie and ending. And not to forget this sublime music that lifts all the emotions together
hopefully she saw the beauty of this man through her natural eyes, as she saw his beauty with the eyes of the soul.... in a way, i believe, chaplin was afraid she (a angelic beautiful woman) would reject a little poor older guy... but it turned out that she did appreciate his internal, but also external beauty... beautiful ending.

2:20 she stands up and you can see in his eyes the fear of being recognized, in that miserable state. In 2 seconds he shows what being a great actor means... not to mention he directed the movie, wrote the story and the music. Genius.
The music. played during this scene is from the song La Violetera composed by the Spaniard José Padilla in 1914. Chaplin had a very good friendship with Spanish aristocrat and director Edgar Neville, and probably heard the song from him.

I fist saw this on TV as a 10-year-old in the summer of 1974. Yes, the ending hit me like a ton of bricks. It still does. It's brilliant, sad and beautiful.
Gets me everytime. Chaplin was a genius. I could watch his movies over and over again. The 24 dislikes are from people that don't get it.
He really was a genius. Not only did he write, act and direct his movies, he wrote the musical scores for many of them, including the song "Smile".
Maybe some of the non-fans don't like him because of his private life. I wouldn't approve of some of the things he did but that's separate and apart from what he accomplished as the greatest artist in the history of cinema.
This is why silence is golden! I felt so happy when THE ARTIST proved it isn't dead.
Sublime and heartbreaking at the same time...only a great artist can bring the two qualities together.

"City Lights" is an exquisite masterpiece. Charlie Chaplin is a brilliant actor, writer, director, musician, and cinematic icon... a true genius, if ever there was one.

The Tramp had nothing, but he couldn’t have been happier when he found out she could see. To be able to show those emotions without dialogue is a quite simply a masterclass in pure acting genius.

Just gorgeous! I watched City Lights again on TMC last evening and just had to come here to watch the ending again. It lives up to all the accolades. The movie is one of the funniest I have ever seen, but it also has the most heart wrenching and touching moments like this ending. Just brilliant!

To think if they made the same scene today, you would need many words spoken with so many different angles and cuts to show the emotion and understanding and yet, this scene alone can speak on many languages without actually talking.
Someone described this magnum opus of a film as a better love story than Titanic. Dude, that's like comparing the Aurora Borealis to a toolshed lightbulb.

90 years later since its debut it still touches my heart. When I was a child, Charlie’s movies were funny, many years later I no longer find it funny at all. Instead, heart of gold in his characters. 2020 was hard, may humanity shed lights in our hearts in 2021.

It's so full of feelings, they don't need any words. That's big, very big cinema.
Chaplin never got an Oscar because he was a socialist... He was put under surveillance of the FBI during the McCarthy era and basically exiled (he wasn't allowed to re-enter the US in 1952 after spending a vacation in Europe; he was forced to move to Sweden with his family)
Used to watch Chaplin's other movies for the gags, stunts, humor and his artful application.
But, wow, this movie's scene just throatpunched me in the feels.
I remember the first time I saw it, I cried just when Chaplin sees her, I think we can all be conmoved by something as beautiful as love

So beautiful...her acting when she recognises him by the touch of his hand and sees who it is and she is overcome with gratitude and emotion and suprise always gets me. And Chaplin...an angel fallen down to earth, a flower in the dust of the road. As Oscar Wilde said of St. Francis of Assisi in De Profundis: he had taken in mystical marriage when he was quite young Poverty for his bride, and with the body of a beggar and the soul of a poet found the way to perfection not difficult.
