What a year 😊I remember my buddy and I getting together every Sunday, sitting in the living room shouting WALLYYYYYY everytime Walter ran and broke through the line! Ahhhh how I miss those days. I can remember every detail, the smells, the tastes of the chips, the sounds of Clark St coming through the window…what a somatic experience burnt into my memory forever!
Walter was such a great every man kind of guy! My buddy was in the insurance business and somehow got Walter’s home phone number. We were so scared to dial it thinking he’d curse us for calling. We’d call like 3 times hanging up every time the other side of the line picked up…then we got the nerve and called a 4th time and Walter still picked up and talked to us as if he was our best friend…such a gracious loving man!!! I cried the day he passed 😢
250 total rushing yards for Da Bears iirc, both starting backs gaining 100 yards. The OL completely dominated the Lions' D. Covert and Hilgenberg were both pro bowlers that year, Bortz, Thayer and Van Horn were solid.
