I was newly married to a Korean woman as she came state side. She understands the game very well because she would ask questions. Now we have 38 yrs together, but the Bears never quite evolved like we did.
More than any plays he made, I love Jim McMahon for what he said after the game when he was interviewed regarding the great Walter Payton . . . and for standing up for him saying at the very least, should've been given the ball down on the goal line for an opportunity to score.
Anyone who saw this Super Bowl, and understands football, knows that Jim McMahon was the MVP of the game. His mooning during the week did not endear him to the voters. Richard Dent had a good game, but Jimmy Mac was special.
McMahon was the best QB for this team. He was the sparkplug who got the engine running and then the Bears backs and receivers complemented him. Great mix of talent, lots of heart.

This was so satisfying as a fan! The whole season was a gas and then this! The crown jewel of Chicago sports championships in my opinion. Nothing against the Bulls, Blackhawks, Sox, of Cubs. I love them all! But this was another level!
I remember thinking back then that we Bears fans haven't won a football championship in 22 years. Now in 2024 I’m thinking we Bear fans haven’t won a Superbowl in 39 years.
It's very interesting to ponder that the whole thing about Payton not getting a touchdown wouldn't have been a factor had Miami beaten NE in the AFCCG. In the game the Bears lost, Ditka seemed to want to show the world that the Bears could just throw with Fuller and win. That seemed really silly since Miami was second to last in the league against the run, but when they did start running, it was clear that Miami's run defense was below average. If they play Miami, they'd have McMahon healthy, and I don't think Ditka would've shied away from the running game; they'd have gotten Payton his 100 yards, probably gotten him a TD, and Payton would've been one of the offensive stars of the game. I've often thought that history missed out on probably the most electrically charged Super Bowl matchup ever that year if Miami beats NE. There would've been so much drama, so many angles, so much star power. I personally think the Bears would've collectively pulled their heads out of their sphincters [in the 1st half of that week 13 game, both Ditka and Ryan were being stubborn to the point of team detriment . . . Ditka in not using the run against such a suspect defense, Ryan in not using nickel defense against Miami's 3WR sets on 1st and 2nd down] and won that game fairly easily. However, would the Bears have dominated the Dolphins the same way they dominated NE? That's difficult to say. Possible, but I doubt it. Because of what Miami did in the 1st half of that week 13 game, I have a hard time believing Ditka would've been anywhere near as free-wheeling and aggressive offensively in a Super Bowl against Miami. Offensively, I could see it being similar to the kind of game they had against Detroit in week 10, where they racked up 250 rushing yards, because Miami and Detroit played almost the exact same kind of defensive system that year, and neither was very good against the run, and with McMahon healthy, they wouldn't have been able to stack the box against the run. It would've been a pick your poison type of situation. Only way they dominate Miami in similar fashion to how they dominated NE would've been if they got some turnovers off Miami very early, and it snowballed from there. Thing is, I don't know if Shula and Marino would've careless enough to allow that. In that week 13 game, they put in designed rollouts for Marino, something they hadn't done previously but felt was necessary because of the Bears' incredible pass rush. Buddy would've had to gameplan against that kind of thing. Again, I think the Bears would've won the game comfortably. However, I do acknowledge that Miami, if things had gone just right, could've given the Bears a real run for their money in that game. In all likelihood, the Bears wouldn't have blown out the Dolphins the same way as they did NE, but the one thing I'm certain of is that Payton would've had a very good game against Miami's defense because they just weren't a good defense against the run at all. In my lifetime, the three most incredible matchups that we lost out on were Bears/Dolphins in SB XX, Bears/Giants with a healthy McMahon in the 86 NFCCG [if the Bears somehow beat WASH with Flutie/Fuller/Tomczak in that Div Playoff game that year, New York would've KILLED them without McMahon], and 49ers/Bills in SB XXV. Don't get me wrong, that Bills/Giants game was a great Super Bowl. I just think 49ers/Bills could've been just as great or even greater. It's fun to ponder history.

I'm confident that they would've won the game comfortably, however it's hard to imagine they would've dominated the Dolphins the same way as New England because the Bears would've used their running game against Miami's weak run defense. Offensively, Ditka and Eddie Hughes would've respected Miami's offense by using their offense to keep Marino off the field and control the ball as much as possible. In the actual Super Bowl against New England, a crucial factor is that they had already played the Patriots in week 2 of the season, and the Bears completely dominated New England defensively, to the point that they could hardly even move the ball at all. Ditka admitted that he had been way too conservative offensively in that game, so when you go back and watch the Super Bowl you'll notice that the Bears just threw caution to the wind offensively in that game, which was because Ditka already knew that NE just couldn't handle their defense. Miami was a different story. Of course, Buddy Ryan would've made the same adjustments he made in the second half of the week 13 game [the only score Miami got was on a twice-tipped pass on 3rd down from near midfield to Mark Clayton], but Ditka would've had the proper respect for Miami and featured the running game, then passed off play-action. I'm certain that Ditka would never have been as free-wheeling and aggressive offensively if Miami had been their opponent in the Super Bowl. So yes, I definitely think the Bears would've won a Super Bowl against Miami, and probably won it comfortably. If things had gone just right, they could've won in overwhelming fashion. But you gotta remember that Marino and that passing game was a serious weapon, and Shula came up with some very impressive tactics to counter the Bears' defense in that week 13 game, including designed rollouts to neutralize their pass rush. In the Super Bowl, it really would've been something to see that defense clash against Shula/Marino again. I think the reason ultimately the Bears win rather easily is because the Dolphins just didn't have a running game, and also Miami's run defense was just terrible. Their pass defense was average to below average, but because their run defense was so bad they would've had to sellout to defend the run, and that's when McMahon and the passing game would make them pay.

I agree totally that the Bears should've run the ball against Miami's terrible run defense in the first half, and agree the Bears would've won, but you can't take away the fact that Buddy did try and blitz Marino in the 1st half, and true to what Covert said, Marino torched them.
I was a little kid when became a football fan with all the '85 Bears hype - they won the Super Bowl for that year and I've been a fan ever since. I have a few other teams I like , and the Bears have had a LOT of really rough years since , but nothing has beat the sports magic of that time in my life !!
This brings back so many vivid memories as here in the UK it was the first season NFL was shown on terrestrial TV. I stayed up until the very end watching this game, which was around 3:30AM given the time difference. The only bad thing was I had to wake up only a few hours later for school the following day, aged around 13 at the time. But it was worth it.

The only real difference between the week two 20-7 Bears victory over New England is that the Bears really opened things up offensively in the Super Bowl. The Bears already knew that New England's offense just had no chance against their defense from that week 2 game. If you go back and watch that game, you can see that Ditka was extremely conservative. They didn't play conservative offense in the Super Bowl.

Jimbo Covert was actually the left tackle for Marino at Pitt, so he knew the kind of quarterback, and specifically, the lightening-quick release, that Marino had. Buddy came up to Covert in practice that week and said, "We're gonna blitz your buddy on Monday and kick his ass." Covert immediately responded, "If you do that, he'll kill you. You can't get to him blitzing. He's too quick." Miami scored 31 in the 1st half.
@@AmirKhan-yv8jm That's a very good point. They knew that New England's defense was a very good defense, and that they would key on Payton like they did in wk2 of that season. So the whole gameplan was to take advantage of them keying on Payton to both pass AND run. McMahon only had 12 completions, but 256 yards passing, a very high yds/completion average. They also used Suhey, Gentry, Thomas, and McMahon himself to run the ball effectively. Ditka knew the Bears' defense would have no trouble shutting down NE's offense because of wk2, so instead of playing conservative offense, he just turned it loose.

Walter Payton wanted to score a TD so bad in the super bowl and Ditka instead uses William perry to run on first and goal. Walter was hurt because of it.
They ran a lot of somewhat gimmicky plays like they were some scrappy team. I mean why is New England gonna stop Payton all day just because they wanted to? They gave design run plays in the red zone to Suhey, Perry, and McMahon, pand also gavelus a HB option to Perry.. something Payton himself was good at.

As thrilled as all Bears fans were in winning this Super Bowl it's still not right with 3 goal to goal trips that Payton didn't get a score. He is the greatest player of all time and got the Bears on the map in the Super Bowl era. It's the least we could have done for him.
I dont understand why the patriots kept dropping the qb back and throwing long when they could have had the qb throw short passes underneath and exploited the defense blitzing every down, it makes no sense.
It was so sad to see Walter Payton walking off the field at the end with his head hung low. It was all because coach Ditka didn't give him a play to score on. Could you imagine how he felt playing all those years and then not given a chance to score one touchdown in the game of his life.

Oh, I WELL remember that game. You know, the one where the head coach didn't let the team's BEST player--and one of the best who had ever graced the game--get a touchdown. Instead, he put in his gimmick player, the Fridge. What a disgrace to Walter Peyton.

It really showed if the Bears could get to a Super Bowl, that they could crush anyone and they did to the Patriots. It's really sad that the Bears with that talent couldn't get back. They had their window from 1984 to 1988. When McMahon was playing during 84 to 88, he was 36-5. You can't get a better record than that, but sadly he just couldn't stay healthy.

That Patriots team was the worst SB representative I can think of. Just a terrible team. Not to take anything away from Chicago of course as they would have massacred anything infront of them that season but, man, that NE team was bad for a SB team.

You can say McMahon led this team to victory, but the real story was the defense. This defense stepped it up for the playoffs. They shut out the Giants. Then, they shut out the Rams. And the first-team defense did not give up a point in the Superbowl. That field goal should not count against the defense because Payton fumbled the ball on his own 20. If Payton had not fumbled they would have had another shutout. And that late TD by the Pats was in garbage time against mostly bench players after the Bears had the game locked up.
False. All of their starters were in when the Pats scored except for Frazier. That's a myth that Bears fans like you have perpetuated for years. Not true.

In that week 13 game, they put in designed rollouts for Marino, something they hadn't done previously but felt was necessary because of the Bears' incredible pass rush. Buddy would've had to gameplan against that kind of thing. Again, I think the Bears would've won the game comfortably. However, I do acknowledge that Miami, if things had gone just right, could've given the Bears a real run for their money in that game. In all likelihood, the Bears wouldn't have blown out the Dolphins the same way as they did NE, but the one thing I'm certain of is that Payton would've had a very good game against Miami's defense because they just weren't a good defense against the run at all. In my lifetime, the three most incredible matchups that we lost out on were Bears/Dolphins in SB XX, Bears/Giants with a healthy McMahon in the 86 NFCCG [if the Bears somehow beat WASH with Flutie/Fuller/Tomczak in that Div Playoff game that year, New York would've KILLED them without McMahon], and 49ers/Bills in SB XXV.
Don't get me wrong, that Bills/Giants game was a great Super Bowl. I just think 49ers/Bills could've been just as great or even greater.

I'm confident that they would've won the game comfortably, however it's hard to imagine they would've dominated the Dolphins the same way as New England because the Bears would've used their running game against Miami's weak run defense. Offensively, Ditka and Eddie Hughes would've respected Miami's offense by using their offense to keep Marino off the field and control the ball as much as possible. In the actual Super Bowl against New England, a crucial factor is that they had already played the Patriots in week 2 of the season, and the Bears completely dominated New England defensively, to the point that they could hardly even move the ball at all. Ditka admitted that he had been way too conservative offensively in that game, so when you go back and watch the Super Bowl you'll notice that the Bears just threw caution to the wind offensively in that game, which was because Ditka already knew that NE just couldn't handle their defense.
Miami was a different story. Of course, Buddy Ryan would've made the same adjustments he made in the second half of the week 13 game [the only score Miami got was on a twice-tipped pass on 3rd down from near midfield to Mark Clayton], but Ditka would've had the proper respect for Miami and featured the running game, then passed off play-action. I'm certain that Ditka would never have been as free-wheeling and aggressive offensively if Miami had been their opponent in the Super Bowl.
So yes, I definitely think the Bears would've won a Super Bowl against Miami, and probably won it comfortably. If things had gone just right, they could've won in overwhelming fashion. But you gotta remember that Marino and that passing game was a serious weapon, and Shula came up with some very impressive tactics to counter the Bears' defense in that week 13 game, including designed rollouts to neutralize their pass rush. In the Super Bowl, it really would've been something to see that defense clash against Shula/Marino again. I think the reason ultimately the Bears win rather easily is because the Dolphins just didn't have a running game, and also Miami's run defense was just terrible. Their pass defense was average to below average, but because their run defense was so bad they would've had to sellout to defend the run, and that's when McMahon and the passing game would make them pay.

I have a few other teams I like , and the Bears have had a LOT of really rough years since , but nothing has beat the sports magic of that time in my life !!

I stayed up until the very end watching this game, which was around 3:30AM given the time difference. The only bad thing was I had to wake up only a few hours later for school the following day, aged around 13 at the time. But it was worth it.

The only real difference between the week two 20-7 Bears victory over New England is that the Bears really opened things up offensively in the Super Bowl. The Bears already knew that New England's offense just had no chance against their defense from that week 2 game. If you go back and watch that game, you can see that Ditka was extremely conservative. They didn't play conservative offense in the Super Bowl.

Jimbo Covert was actually the left tackle for Marino at Pitt, so he knew the kind of quarterback, and specifically, the lightening-quick release, that Marino had. Buddy came up to Covert in practice that week and said, "We're gonna blitz your buddy on Monday and kick his ass."
Covert immediately responded, "If you do that, he'll kill you. You can't get to him blitzing. He's too quick."

So the whole gameplan was to take advantage of them keying on Payton to both pass AND run. McMahon only had 12 completions, but 256 yards passing, a very high yds/completion average. They also used Suhey, Gentry, Thomas, and McMahon himself to run the ball effectively. Ditka knew the Bears' defense would have no trouble shutting down NE's offense because of wk2, so instead of playing conservative offense, he just turned it loose.

You can say McMahon led this team to victory, but the real story was the defense. This defense stepped it up for the playoffs. They shut out the Giants. Then, they shut out the Rams. And the first-team defense did not give up a point in the Superbowl. That field goal should not count against the defense because Payton fumbled the ball on his own 20. If Payton had not fumbled they would have had another shutout. And that late TD by the Pats was in garbage time against mostly bench players after the Bears had the game locked up.
