I bought the DJI mini 2 4 days after it came out and I've gone 8000 feet with absolutely no transmission cut out and I was going 36mph doing so so that little thing is a beast.

Dang! You’re willing to be a bit more risky than myself ;). I’ve gotta play it safe because I am a Part 107 holder and can’t risk losing that! Also, fines aren’t cool either

@@carsonmtech Yeah also just so you know must of that 8000-foot flight was over the woods. Also, I am not a part 107 holder since the last time a had a drone over 250grams I was 10. That's one of the most awesome parts of the mini is you don't need to be a part 107 holder.

I own both a mavic mini and a air 2. I fly in a region where there is no wifi interference or obstructions and flat terrain. I've flown my air 2 out 24,000 feet and back. I have flown my mini with yagi 5.8 ghz range extenders out 16,000 feet and back. Both birds range in my case is limited by battery life. In the environment I fly, remember no wifi interference, I actually have less signal breakup issue with the mini 5.8 ghz than the air 2 ocuusync. With the air 2 ocuusync I have to keep increasing altitude in order to keep a strong enough signal to not have fpv breakup. At 24,000 feet out I have to be at 300 ft elevation to keep a decent fpv. On the other hand the mini on 5.8 ghz I can put it up to 100 ft elevation and fly the entire distance out and back without fpv signsl drop. I've also found at maximum distance the ocuusync is much more critical of needing the controller antenna pointed directly to the bird than the 5.8 ghz yagi antenna. I'm sure if you are flying where there is a lot of wifi congestion the ocuusync will perform better. Also I want to make it clear I am not in any way trying to discourage anyone from buying a ocuusync technology drone.

The Mini 2 doesnt have enough battery life to need range extenders. That would be a waste of money. Besides that, in most countries you have to be in VLOS, so why go beyond the current range ?

    • @carsonmtech

That one would probably actually require going a further distance away in order to see differences, but the Mini 2 would surprisingly likely come out on top. Theoretically it should at least. It is a newer drone with newer tech though so I wouldn’t be super surprised if it was able to come out atop :)!

Hey Carson... Enjoyed your comparison. The Mini 2 definitely has plus features.
Glad you mentioned that you are not going to do "Extended Range" testing beyond VLOS, and your reason(s).
With the size of the Mini and Mini 2, they would probably vanish from view within 500 - 1000' - depending on one's eye sight and sky background. Cloudy? It would probably go 'poof' by 500'.
If your viewers are really that interested in seeing how far the Mini or any DJI drone will go, there are plenty of TH-camrs out their to accommodate their desires. I'm guessing those guys are not Part 107 Certified pilots, therefore have very little to lose (maybe). They certainly don't have an FAA Pilot's certificate to lose. I've watched more than one of those guys have their drones fall from the sky far from the Home Point, by ignoring and then canceling their battery Low Warning message.
Happy Holidays to you and your family.

I see and hear people’s Signal issues, when telemetry shows flying at 15-20m!! It would amaze and teach people the importance of the correct antenna adjustment, but in my experience if ever any trouble with reception, raise your quads altitude, and signal will regain almost immediately. With only a hand full of flights with the Mini2, and some time to inspect some things, I question this quad having true Occu Sync, since my beginning with Occu Sync have found it to be ROCK SOLID, and more forgiving around objects and obstructions between the drone and transmitter, but not at all the same with the Mini2, wondering if it’s a very limited OS system!! With that said I know there has been some issues with Fly App which results in poor performance, and DJI will quickly fix the problem and the Mavic family of quads will perform perfect once again. Thanks for sharing your content without bias opinions, your homes is refreshing, stay flying my Mavic friend,😎

There is a safety future in the settings that is turned on by default on what the drone should do if it loses signal. 3 options, land where its at, stay in the air, or return to home. Return to home is set by default.

When you live in the middle of nowhere range isn’t an issue. I live in a place where I can’t send my air 2 or mini more then a half mile occusync or WiFi. These tests are only good for your location. No offense by middle of nowhere, just an observation. I live in a busy area.

Thanks for this video. My concern is how it is even possible to use a drone for many functions when you are NOT using line of sight to guide the drone. These things are so tiny that after 40 or 50 feet above the ground you can barely see it. Even going more than 200-400 feet away from you makes the drone too tiny to see. So, I think that clearly drone operators are not really following the FAA rule of LOS. That said, I'm really excited about getting the mini2 and using it for international documentary films. Thanks again for your video!

Mavic Mini and Mini2 drones are the same (on hardware), the difference is just the controller of Mini which switch Wifi signal and they call that Ocusync2 (but its just wifi dynamic switching between 2.4 Ghz and 5.8 ghz). They could have allowed Mini 2 Controller to Work on Mavic Mini but they didn't so that people are forced to upgrade and buy the Mini 2
