    I love my Whirly Pop! It actually makes a batch of popcorn faster than any other kind of popper. You can use less oil than the instructions say, and it'll still work well. You can also put butter and salt into it as soon as the popping stops, and turn the crank to distribute them through the warm popcorn. (You should wash it after that, though.)
    I've had my Whirley Pop for a long time, and a couple of years ago the plastic gears on the lid broke. I wrote to the company, and they sent me a whole new lid for free!

    When I was young we would go buy vegetables every Friday night from a man up the road. He would tell us that on Friday night he would have popcorn and tomato juice for dinner. Every once in awhile when I'm feeling a little low I will have popcorn and tomato juice for dinner on a Friday night. It always makes me feel better.

      Why specifically tomato juice? Sounds like a good combo, but I think I'd go with cream o' tomato soup, instead, made with milk, not water. A little grated cheddar mixed into the soup while it's hot. Hmmm, I think that might be dinner tonight.

    I bought the Whirly Popper a couple of years ago and after a lifetime of using different poppers this is hands down the best I've ever seen. It is quick and easy and leaves almost no unpopped kernels. I bought the stainless model and it is easy to clean up too. Using two tablespoons of popping oil and adding a bit of movie popcorn salt directly to the popper produces great popcorn. Last year at Christmas I gave one to each of our families and they all love them too.

    Great review! I read an article somewhere (perhaps Consumer Reports?) about popcorn. It said that the unpopped kernels really had to do with the freshness of the popcorn more than anything else. One might think popcorn could last forever, since it is dried, but it does not. It still contains moisture inside the kernels, which is what makes it pop. It dries out, and then it won't pop. Older packages of popcorn, whether they've been sitting on the grocery store shelves or our own shelves, do not pop as well. Fresher ones do. Thanks for the great video!

      Using the Whirley pop really does decrease the number of unpopped kernels. You may well be right about kernels being too dry. But I do know the whirley pop does work.

  • @karalee6522
    @karalee6522 6 ปีที่แล้ว +63

    As an avid popcorn eater, I LOVE the whirley pop!! It''s super fast, every kernel ends up popped, and you save the steps having to slide the pot all around or pick it up and swirl it. Best thing to do is throw salt in at the beginning so it actually sticks and comes out all evenly salted...no butter necessary.

    I have a spinner popcorn popper and it has made BUCKETS of pop corn. I crank the heat to high and warm the oil first. Then, add the 1/2 cup of kernals. In less than 2 minutes, we have the best popcorn! Salt and butter to taste. It is a uni-tasker. And, one of the few uni-taskers that we own. But, it fits on top of the cupboard and is used frequently. Best of all, it was a gift! Best price ever! Love your vids. Thank you for sharing a part of your day with us!

    Things I have done since I got my Whirly-Pop:
    Made clarified butter kettle corn.
    Used beef tallow as oil (sparingly!) and seasoned with a beef ramen noodle packet.
    Mixed clarified butter and coconut oil, colored with annatto and seasoned with fine salt.
    Bacon grease and seasoned with alder smoked salt.
    Used oil with a touch of chili oil (don't breathe the steam!) and sesame oil, seasoned with Chinese five spice powder.
    Olive oil, seasoned with parmesan cheese and rosemary.
    Pop in oil but season with brown butter and Himalayan pink salt.
    All of these could be done with a pot, sure, but I love the speed and ease of the Whirly-Pop. You never have to wash it unless you make kettle corn in it. You just rinse it with hot water and wipe it out. Anyway, I am a big fan of mine. Your mileage may vary.

  • @kgrose102

    I have one of these and I enjoy it. They also say not to clean it every time just wipe it out with a paper towel because it'll season the pot over time similar to cast iron. For anyone with an electric stove pre heat the element before you put the pot down, it helps make it go fast. I still wish I could find a decent air popper, the one I had before died and it was great.

      Try making a pot dry, no oil. You need to keep it moving or some kernels will toast on one side and not pop, but it works pretty much as well as with oil. The gadget would probably be perfect for dry.
      Microwave? I don't have many good things to say about it, it's fun to watch, the smell is inviting.

    • @lovecinnamonxx
      @lovecinnamonxx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Brian Landers what in the world is low-fat oil? 😂

    • @jbeargrr
      @jbeargrr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, no such thing as low-fat oil.
      I grew up popping corn in a cast iron skillet, with a dome-type lid to give it room to bounce around. We always put the oil in first, with a single kernal. As soon as it popped, we dump in the rest of the corn, and put the lid on. It starts popping very quickly, and we shook the pan the whole time it popped. When popping slowed way down, we stopped and dumped it into a big bowl immediately. Can't let it sit in cast iron, it holds the heat, the corn will burn.
      I don't use microwave popcorn, they put all kinds of bad crap in it. I do have an air popper that works great, got it for $1 at a thrift store.

    • @cowboybob7093
      @cowboybob7093 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jbeargrr, Yeah, the oil/corn together, I didn't get.
      Sure, I mentioned "dry," but oil or dry, it seems adding popcorn to a hot skillet (etc) works best, dry, oil, no matter.

    • @astrid6496
      @astrid6496 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have made it the way you describe too, but the caramel is a lot thicker and sweeter. It's a completely different taste. When I make it in the kettle, you just get a thin coating and it is just slightly sweetened... You can eat a lot more without getting sick haha. And yes, it can very easily burn. I would be lying if I said I haven't messed up and let it go too long, you really have to stay on top of it the whole time. For me personally it's worth it though, the flavour is incredibly addictive!

I found that every electric popper I'd tried had a small "gutter" around the top that accumulated gunk--and you can't immerse the electric units. Always frustrated with that single design flaw. I am one of the cooks that love gadgets but feel anything should have more uses than one to be worth the space and investment it requires. I always try to figure out multiple uses for each gadget. This popper looks so fast and easy that I thought it could be worth the space it takes. Perhaps it could be used also to make croutons, just figure out a right temperature and give the spiced bread cubes whirl every couple of minutes. It would be easier than making them on a baking sheet and opening a hot oven door to toss the cubes around. I am sure there would be other ways to use it also.

    I don't know where I read this and why it hasn't come up elsewhere but if you throw a few test kernels in to pop and then turn off the heat and put the rest of the kernels in and wait 30 seconds before turning the heat on again, it helps the kernels cook more evenly and you won't burn your popcorn and have uncooked kernels. Best tip I've ever heard! Just got a whirly pop so excited to try it!

    The Whirley Pop is actually multipurpose like a regular pot....you can take the lid off of the Whirley Pop and use it's pot as a basic pot. Some people roast coffee beans in it, and I because of that I bet it's great at roasting nuts too. You can even make soup/stew in it and use the crank to stir when needed.

    I generally agree with you about unitaskers, but my air popper is one of my favorite kitchen gadgets. It doesn't require oil and you cannot burn the popcorn, they're pretty inexpensive (usually well under $20), and no bigger than a water jug. It was the first thing I purchased when I had my own kitchen because it's just so much easier than doing it on the stove (or setting it on fire in the microwave).

    For those that like the speed of microwave popcorn without all the concern of the chemicals used in fake butter flavoring, you can just take a brown paper sack - like you use for lunch bags - put in a couple tablespoons of oil, a couple tablespoons of popcorn, and a few shakes of whatever flavoring or spices you might like in there, roll down the top of the bag a couple times and secure with a single staple. Shake it up a bit and throw it in your microwave (flat side of staple facing up) for about 1.5 - 2 minutes...timing depends on your microwave wattage. Shake up the bag again before opening. There you have home made microwave popcorn with whatever flavorings you want. For those worrying about the staple in the microwave, the staple is too small and not curved enough to cause arcing in the microwave.I've done hundreds of bags in various microwaves over the years and have never set anything on fire yet.

    If you're making popcorn using only oil and kernels you don't need a stirring mechanism. You need a stirring mechanism if you're making popcorn like they do at movie theaters, i.e., oil, kernels, and Flavacol (flavored popcorn salt). Without a stirring mechanism the Flavacol mostly just settles on the bottom of the kettle with not much of it ending up on the popped popcorn.
    Also, so-called "unitaskers" are a good thing; i.e., "the right tool for the job." Take a look at a professional auto mechanic's tools sometime and you'll see tons of so-called "unitaskers." There are special tools for driving in wheel bearing races, for separating ball joints, for compressing strut springs, for compressing valve springs, for expanding exhaust tubing, for flaring brake lines, for bending brake lines, for removing windshield wiper arms, for removing steering wheels, for working windshields into their gaskets, for removing snap rings, for cleaning battery terminals, and so on. I think it's hilarious that Alton Brown has managed to convince so many people to adopt his own bizarre idiosyncrasy.

    • @ortzinator

      The oil is the flavoring. I've had great results with just canola oil and salt.

    • @MaximRecoil
      @MaximRecoil 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ortzinator You have low standards for what constitutes "great results." Canola oil is practically flavorless, so the only thing you'll taste is salt. In addition to salt, popcorn should also have a butter flavor, which only comes from butter or the chemicals in butter that are responsible for the buttery flavor (diacetyl and acetoin).

    • @leonardpearlman4017

      MSG makes everything better! In Korean markets they have super salt (which has some MSG in it) and Super Seasoning which is MSG plus the guanylates and the other thing, this is what you actually find in Ramen, and snacks, and seasoned soy sauce and such. You use less of the super seasoning than plain MSG. Called "Miwon" I think, the super Miwon is more expensive than regular MSG of course, but I think it's worth it and you don't use much. People are so funny about MSG. I sometimes say "If you were Japanese, your GREAT GRANDMOTHER might have bought Aji-no-moto BRAND, it's still in the store today! Where was I? Oh, yeah. I'm going to try your suggestion!

    It is now 2022 and I just bought the Whirly Pop maker after a friend told me she had one for years and really liked it. Made some Theater Popcorn with the Whirly Popper and worked great, tasted great, and easy to use. Was also easy for me to clean. I now have Theater Popcorn to eat while watching my streaming movies.
    Note: Before: I was looking at other Amazon Air Poppers and did not like the way they worked plus there were allot of negative reviews on Amazon on the Air Poppers. Also, I hate Microwave Popcorn and was told this kind of popcorn is worse for us cause of the ingredients.
    Thanks for the video.
    Note your video: Whether you cook the popcorn in a Pot or the Whirly Popper, the popcorn should taste just the same. it is the same cooking process. The Whirly may keep from burning some of the kernels that sit at the bottom of the pot by moving the kernels around while cooking. I still prefer the Whirly over just using a Pot. But that is your choice. Sure, the Whirly costs more, and I use it just for making popcorn.

    I feel like you should’ve tested making kettle corn bc the constant turning of the whirly pop would be perfect for that and since it’s hard to recreate that in just a pot, it would have been a better comparison, I think!

      For plain or buttered popcorn, I’m more likely to use my usual saucepan, because it’s handy and it works. But when I make kettle corn, I definitely dig in the back of the cabinet for my Whirlypop. A regular pot burns the sugar, but the Whirlypop stirs everything constantly so it doesn’t burn.

    If you like plain popcorn, nothing can beat red or blue "gourmet'' popcorn. So much more flavor than regular popcorn and not much more cost. It's great w/o butter, just salt and pepper. I'd like to see a video devoted to different types of popcorn and flavors.
    I use an air popper most often and you lose a lot of kernels that way, but it's easy and quick w/o much clean up. Gourmet popcorn is better on the stove as you lose fewer kernels than an air popper. I have a Whirley Pop I got on clearance many years ago and it's fun for kettle corn and easy for my nieces and nephew to use when they stay over. I can't see them managing shaking a pot without a problem, so the space loss is fine for me in my tiny kitchen. It's on a high shelf out of the way until needed.

    The crank popper worked good during the winter. We use to heat with wood in a cooking cabin stove. The kids loved to fix their own popcorn this way. We also made a lotta sweet kettle corn. We found out that after it is full of sweet stuff stuck inside that if you leave it in a shed the rats will clean the insides for you👍🤪. After that it simply became a dish to feed chicken from.

    When I was a kid, my parents were in an RV camping club. One of the guys had a huge stock pot with a custom lid that was basically the same idea as the whirly pop.
