Good Morning..... I own the Whirley Pop Platinum Series & the Aluminum Color Changing. I don't own the Popsmith , but was considering it. In my opinion the Platinum Series is a better option coming from Whirley Pop. I don't worry about scratches too often. To clean this I soak it for a short time ( you don't have to).. I do this so it's a littl easier to clean. I use a SOS or Brillo Soap pad on this. It cleans it very well while giving it a nice shine to it close to as when it was first purchased. The soap pad also gets the stuck on popcorn off. It was a $100.00 but to me it was well worth it. It clean up so much better & has less kernels in the bottom. The quality is definitely there. I have trouble spending $200.00 on a popcorn popper. I literally cringe on that price & that's when I looked at Whirley Pop's options. I also had trouble with the price of the Platinum Series from Whirley Pop, but decided to go for it anyway. It was $100.00 cheaper than Popsmith but I could not justify that price. I don't have any regrets having the Platinum Series from Whirley Pop. That model comes with 2 paddles. One for sweet such as kettle corn, carmel etc. the other is for regular popcorn. For the most part I use the one for the sweet the most because it comes in contact with the pot a little better, but I still use the other paddle as well. The only con I have for the platinum series is that it does take a few more minutes to heat up. I don't use the aluminum color changing pot that often. I maybe considering getting rid of it, but that I have not decided on yet. Overall I love the Platinum Series from Whirley Pop. I am not sure if I want to try Popsmith. Hope this helps.
Thanks for your review and comparison. I'd happily pay $150 for the Popsmith but $200+ is a tougher sell. I've had the Franklin whirlypopper for a couple years now, and it's probably more analogous to the Platinum whirlypopper. I highly recommend Amish Country popcorn products. You can get a 6 lbs bag of whatever popcorn variety you want (they also have sampler packs to try different varieties; I like medium yellow, but the medium white hullless is good too and has no kernels to get stuck in your teeth), a bottle of butter flavored canola oil or butter flavored coconut oil (I prefer the coconut), and different seasonings (I prefer the fine white popcorn salt, but the butter flavored popcorn salt is good too), butter flavored topping, etc., all for very reasonable prices in my opinion, especially when comparing to branded ones like Popsmith or Franklin. I pop for just myself, so my method is to put on a nitrile glove and dig out some oil with my fingers (it's probably 3-4 Tbsp if I measured it), put it in the popper, and turn the eye on about 4.5 (medium or a bit under probably). I just let it melt for a minute or two while I scoop out 1/3 cup of kernels, stir the oil around, then add the kernels and 3/8 tsp of salt, close the lid, and wait til it starts popping before cranking the handle. I pour the popcorn into a bowl, drizzle some of the buttery topping on it, shake it around, and go watch something while I snack. For cleanup, I've never actually washed it, as I want to say their instructions said to just wipe it out with paper towels, so that's what I've done for 2 years and it's fine. For two people, I would suggest doubling what I do, to 1/2 cup popcorn and 1 1/2 tsp salt. It should be basically perfect.
End result is the same but the product that costs greater than 5x more feels better. Good to know. We've had a plastic gear Whirley pop that we paid under $30 for at a sporting goods store several years ago. Never had any issue with snapping the lid on and off but did have an issue with the hand holding the handle getting hot from steam. An oven mitt cures that. I watched your review to see if the Popsmith would be something to consider, and at 5x the price, I don't think it is, but thanks for your review, although I think a comparison of the Popsmith vs the Whirley pop platinum would be more fair.
Growing up we had what I think is equivalent to the stir crazy. But we also just used Mom's old pressure cooker pan and shook it. That was a beast. I won't ever pay $200 for a popcorn pan.
I've had a Whirley Pop for a number of years and made many batches. Cleaning it isn't my favorite thing to do, but there's no way I would pay the much higher price for the Popsmith.
Love my whirly pop. Have used it a lot. The popsmith doesn't have that much more benefits for its price. Going to make popcorn today in my whirly pop. Yum!
Whirley Pop is great, if you don’t clean it. After inheriting my mom’s Whirley Pop that we’ve had for many years, I finally tossed it because of all the built up grime that’s impossible to clean. While the Popsmith doesn’t seem like it’s worth $200, at least it’s dishwasher safe, or easier to hand wash. I wonder how the Whirley Pop Platinum performs, but I haven’t found any videos on it yet
I have a Whirly Pop that I have been using for 35 years. It does have a little grease build up around the hinges of the lid but makes great popcorn. The Popsmith looks good but the weight would be a hindrance to me when emptying the pan. To me the biggest fault of. The Popsmith is the price.
Wow! Who knew? Both products reviewed here are beautiful gadgets and both would look great in my industrial-themed loft apartment. The main thing that I am glad you covered is the final product and how well they both popped popcorn. I can relate to your neighbour regarding the weight of the WP, as I have RA in both wrists. In any case, Ty, for your candid and very thorough review. This is the PC popper I didn't know I needed until I saw it here.👍🏾🙂🍿
Solid review - thanks. We are going for the Popsmith - it just looks like a nicer experience. I would like to see the new Whirly Pop Platinum reviewed though. P.s. maybe kill the sound other than your voice over - all the little moments I could hear a second voice was very startling. I thought someone was in the room with me.
@mbsportflyer Kids love to crank the popper, for sure. I don't have an unopened kernel issue with air poppers. And I got my air popper at Goodwill for $2.
@@gunit6815 Sorry... I thought you were talking USD. It is cheaper on Popsmith's website at $282 CAD but obviously still nowhere near the price of a Whirley Pop.

Thank you for this very insightful video, Brad! We appreciate your feedback.☺

If you don’t use the prepackaged stuff. Can you give me your measurements for the corn, salt and oil?
We use a basic Whirley Pop. 1/2 cup popping corn, 2 tbsp of literally any cooking oil, 1/2 tsp fine salt
Air popper. All the way.
way more unpopped kernels with the air popper, and if you have kids, cranking the popper is FUN
@mbsportflyer Kids love to crank the popper, for sure. I don't have an unopened kernel issue with air poppers. And I got my air popper at Goodwill for $2.
$200 for a unitasker pan just to make popcorn is too much.
for $320 less, the Whirley pop works for me
$170 less... but understandable.
@ where is it $170 less? It’s 356 on Amazon Canada. Let me know where it’s 170 less and I’ll buy it. I paid 19.99 Canadian dollars for my whirley pop
