- In this video we ditch the 8" rear end in my 2006 Sequoia and swap in a 10.5" axle from a 2011 Toyota Tundra.

Doooood. Looks great. Had no idea the Tundra axles were wider than the Sequioa rear. Seems perfect for a front long travel swap.
It works out great for a LT front, got to ditch my 2" wheel spacers. Hangs a little lower than the 8" but everything's a compromise

I was at the mud pit with my Sequoia on Father's Day. Loved it. Saw another Sequoia with clicking diffs. He was still full sending it. Love this shit

When cutting out your lower shock extension brackets you could have laid them out with the axle end connected them used a hole saw and drilled out that radius for two at the same time. Yes, you would need the correct hole saw or get yourself a plasma cutter before a plasma table. Good job getting after it.

Now time for a 2nd Gen Tundra steering rack too.
That was the plan but since the steering setup is in front of the wheels on the 2nd Gen the rack turns the opposite way as the 1st gens 🤦

I'm amazed that the 10.5" isn't a lot more popular..... This is a seriously legit axle. WAY stronger ring and pinion than the beloved Dana 60, and the carrier itself is dimensionally really close to the Dana 80 !! I've actually machined several Dana 80 lockers to fit these third members. Opens the door to 40 spline ! I love the light yet strong sheet metal housing, easy to weld, modify, ect...

@@treehouseoffroad Yea I was pretty shocked when I started measuring the internals on the first one of these diffs I got my hands on..... There weren't any LSD / locker options, and I really liked the unit, so one thing led to another and I had one sitting there with a Dana 80 locker in it, custom floater ends and shafts and Wilwood 4 pot calipers on 13" rotors LOL !! Nowadays you can get ARB air lockers, and Eaton E-lockers, so pretty nice options, but I also like my Detroits for simple, hard core builds. The late (1998-up) Toyota 9.5" is also a super overlooked, under rated diff. That third member is super stout, can be set up with 35 spline side gears in ARB air locker and bolts into ALL ealier Toyota 9.5" housings back to the 1950's, plus many Chevy 1/2 ton truck housings dating all the way back to the early 1930's (Yes, the 9.5" Toyota is a evolution of a very old GM rear end.) It's roots started in late 1920's Oakland / Pontiac cars in both open driveline and torque tube form.

I can't even begin here , but suffice to say I am a welder, machinist, fabricator, artist that does a lot of freelance r&d work and prototyping, and tend to be extremely curious and "outside the box". I won't go into a deep dive now, but I am totally frustrated with the current state of the automotive / offroad enthusiast "industry"........
Absolutely homogenized "monkey see, monkey do" Nobody has any "deep" know-how or understanding of history, or wrecking yard parts !!. 30-40 years ago, people were doing builds way more like yours, figuring out solutions, being creative... Now, I go to Easter Jeep Safari and it's a sea of 4 door JK's and JL's , Gladiators and some giant late model Tacomas and 4Runners, all pretty similar style. So boring compared with the old days !! Good job on your Sequoia, something different and a solid platform.

The 22 and up tundras and sequoias are using the same axle but went back to the 6x5.5 lug pattern. I’m not sure if the axle shafts will work in the old housing, but I do know the front wheel bearing from the 07 to 21 front hubs are the same as the 22 and up.
That's solid info thank you. I'm heavily invested in the 5 lug at this point though. Sort of an odd flex, definitely a conversation starter!
if I were going all out on an axle like that I would have powder-coated that thing.

@@treehouseoffroadit was a tough day watching it drive off, but I’m glad with the time spent and miles driven behind the wheel. It’s been good. Getting 24mpg on my daily 90 mile commute helps a lot, paired with some of the newer vehicle features my wife can appreciate have been nice. It’s hard to compare the two vehicles, but for the time in my life and how I utilize my vehicle, it was the right choice… for now… hopefully one day I’ll be back in the sequoia gang haha

Damn... you keep giving me a lot of projects with my 5th gen😅. I'm still learning with fabrication and welding. I'll do the FJ transfer case swap, and then I want to do the Tundra rear axle on my 5th gen 4runner. It seems pretty straightforward. I'm just gonna need some time and patience. 🤙🏾💪🏾👊🏾

Why do you still have that extra muffler in the back. I cut mine and loosened the connection after the big muffler. You have to force it to down turn the pipe cause there's some dimples in the pipe so they put it together correctly during assembly. It relieved a lot of back pressure. I've been thinking of getting old c6 Corvette muffler I think they might fit welded together in place of the current big muffler for true twice pipes

Hows the front diff conversion coming? When do you think we will have a video on it?👀👀
It's a challenging one for sure. Mainly bc there are aspects of the project that I can't do myself. Machine work to shorten the intermediate shaft, aluminum welding to shorten the housing. I'm at other people's mercy so there's no definite timeline.
Both those things are done though, and I have one spindle finished.
Short answer is say I'm 70% done.

New Sequoia hybrid comes with 10.5 inch ring gear at rear from factory . Do you think it will be better at off road compared to previous generations sequoia’s
I think it has more to do with the driver. The new Seq probably has a bunch of traction control systems so maybe that would help?
