    Hi friends! Here is a requested video for a right handed demo for the popular pony bead blanket designed by Jess M. You can find the link to the source in the description box. I've seen beaded blankets before but what I love about this one is that the beads stay upright instead of leaning to the side. Reminds me of an Abacus! Besides a blanket, I can see this being used as a border, purse, bags, straps....so many things 🤩 Hope you enjoy the video xx
    Washing:
    Jess uses her washing machine to clean her blanket. She has used high heat with no issues.
    Keep in mind, she is using acrylic yarn. Other yarns may vary in result. She does not use a dryer because the beads make it noisy. 👍🏻

    I am 72 years of age and last night I finished my first ever crochet project ever! A yellow and white self striping blanket with a picot edge to it done in white. I came across your video not knowing if I would do another blanket ever. When I took a look at the project and noticed that it was weighted I immediately thought of my autistic grandson. He wants it done in Camouflage yarn and black beads. He loves me but has never really wanted or asked of me anything! We plan on going to Wal-Mart together to do some shopping together. God Bless you and thank you so much for this pattern....😇

      This is such a lovely comment! I’m sure your grandson will love that! I want to give you a big thank you for this comment because I never knew what a picot edge was called until right now! I have been on the hunt for what the edging style is called because I’m in the process of recreating a granny square blanket that my mom’s grandmother (my great grandmother) made for her in the 70s. My mom put the blanket on my bed when I was 8 or so and has joked for years about wanting it back so I’m intending to give her a recreated version of it (the original came with me to Boston when I moved for grad school). I’m 25 now and I never really got to know my great grandmother as she passed when I was about 8 but crocheting makes me feel closer to her and the rest of my ancestors! Two of my great great grandmothers were lace crocheters and seamstresses and I am the first in my family to pick up crocheting in a generation or two. If I ever have a daughter one day I’m planning on naming her Dorothy (Dottie for short) in honor of my great grandmother and the blanket she made my mom that now lives with me in Boston and reminds me of where I came from no matter how far away I am. Your comment brought me closer to her, and for that I cannot thank you enough. Best of luck with all of your future crocheting adventures! I hope that every stitch brings you closer to your family just like it has for me ❤

    OMG! I finally found someone who holds their yarn like I do! I have crocheted for over 50 years and have never held my yarn with my index finger held high like I have been told is the "correct" way. Yet I have done afgans, doilies, slippers, and even my daughter's wedding dress (17 balls of Southmaid crochet cotton) and everything comes out nice. So if anyone is new to crochet, or knitting or anything, find out what works for you.

      @@queque5williams748 It was! It was burgundy thread with a floor length sleeveless black dress underneath. I made it in a medieval style with bell sleeves and almost a full circle skirt. I used a berry and leaf pattern from a table cover I had found in an old doily book and about three quarters down I made the stitches longer in the back, like turning double crochet to triple, etc., so it formed a small train in the end. I was afraid the weight of the skirt would pull down on the top, so I made an elastic band to be worn just under the bust, and with making the top fitted in the end you couldn't even tell. My daughter had found a necklace with a stone that matched the color of the dress, so I crocheted a small cap and attached the necklace so that the stone hung on her forehead and swagged the chain off in both directions. I had a really long piece of black tulle and found a rectangle of burgundy lace, so I folded the tulle over so the top was just past mid back and the bottom formed a train. I inserted the lace panel in-between and it hit about mid butt. Then I gathered all that at the top and sewed it to the cap, the shorter top tulle making a bouffant. She carried a single red rose. She was radiant in it. Since I had taken every measurement possible it fit her perfectly

    I have wanted a weighted blanket for so long, but they’re too expensive to buy, and the traditional way to make it is still quite expensive and very difficult and not in my skill set. However I do have lots of yarn and beads!!! It still would be expensive if I wanted to get more yarn and beads to make a full on blanket, but it’s definitely more in my skill set!! I’m going to try this out :))

      this will make a blanket that is significantly heavier than a non-beaded blanket, but nowhere near the weight recommended for actual weighted blankets (10% of users weight + 1lb for a single bed size).
      the video says it's 5lbs for 3' X 4' (so, 5lbs over 12 square feet). (5/12)*15=6.25lbs for a 3'X5' blanket. it's the recommended weight for a person weighing 52.5lbs. making it wider, a 4'X5' blanket would weigh 8.3lbs (ie. recommended for a 73lbs person). you can play with dimensions a bit, but unless you're very small it's going to be less effective than a "proper" one.
      which isn't to say "don't make one", but be prepared that you might need to double (or tripple, or more) the thickness for the same effectiveness as one you'd buy in your size.

      @@hexabellezarco yes, different beads/crocheting over metal washers could work. it's just important to know that "weighted blanket" means different things to different people

      @@aShadeBolder Having a blanket that fits my bed, but doesn't weigh as much as a traditional weighted blanket does would be awesome for me, because too much weight makes it so that I can't breath. For us folks with asthma, a lighter weighted blanket sounds great. Plus you can always fold it in half for added weight in a particular spot, like over the feet. It literally sounds like a plus in my books, tbh hahah I appreciate the math and explanation of how it would work with an individuals weight though, that is helpful since I think I might want to make one of these for myself!

    I thought about making a lap blanket in local school colors for football or soccer season then making a besded bag for it to get folded up and put into with a pocket for tumbler will make great gifts because maybe even for the pro games. I made a blanket where the beads were part of the fringe so all I can say to wash delicate cycle and dryer is low heat or just fluff and then lay out to finish drying... I lay mine on my spare bed then the beads don't pull to much

    I don't know how to crochet at all, but I was very interested in this! I've always wondered how beads get into a crocheted project! It's amazing how much weight plastic beads can add to a small blanket. My Dad used a weighted blanket at the nursing home memory care unit. I have one concern with these weighted blankets. How much stretch will the yarn have over time, and what could be done to reduce that. I've had people use acrylic shopping bags that stretch a LOT before they knew it they had to use the bags pretty much to carry light weight items only like cereals, crackers, and other light weight items. The heavier items put in the bag exaggerated the stretch of the acrylic so bad that heavier items, even in small amounts of potato or apples, caused the stretch to be so extreme the bags were almost reaching the floor to make the bag nearly useless in that application. So maybe a mercerized cotton carried with or another sturdier yarn to help prevent the big stretch that could sneak up real fast, or does anyone know of a nice sturdy acrylic bland that could work well for this? I think this is a GREAT blanket that could benefit a lot of people, but I do have concern for the work that goes into it not holding up more than a year or two.

    • @PlayHookywithMe
      @PlayHookywithMe  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Like I mentioned in the video, the yarn I used was very stiff when worked up so if you’re looking for durability for a bag , this yarn would work.
      However, my personal approach would be to use a cotton blend rather than acrylic alone to maintain shape.
      I always use cotton for bags /purses.
      But a cotton acrylic blend would be ideal for a blanket. That’s just my opinion. I’d love to know what others think.

    • @nharber9837
      @nharber9837 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      If you’re concerned about stretch, I would recommend cotton. I made all my shopping bags from cotton yarn, and they stand up very well, and haven’t stretched much over the years of daily abuse. I changed my handle method, though, once one showed wear at the handle connection. Now I drop a hook size, and do a long loop that folds and goes all the way under the bag and comes back up to be both shoulder straps, and I stitch a piece of bias tape or heavy duty ribbon inside for even more handle stability before attaching the handles. I’m able to throw a 25lb frozen turkey in one and carry it across the parking lot and up the stairs like a purse with these and they don’t even act like they noticed once the turkey is removed.

      As long as they are washable which I am unsure of how the pony beads will handle in a machine, you can always call whichever organization or institution you have in mind or see what their requirements are. I know there is one local charity for me that does not allow beads or embellishments because IV lines can get pinched by them or something. I think it would be a wonderful idea though.
