I'm so glad you put PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE on this list. Would have been so disappointed if you hadn't. It's one of my top favorite cult films. And, I regret being able to say that I actually got to see this when it was first in the cinema. Not because I didn't like the movie, obviously, or the songs, which were excellent. It's just that admitting to that seriously carbon dates me.

I still remember the day I saw Argento's Phantom. My fandom transformed from intense to absolute zero to absolute loathing in the span of a movie. On another note, the '89 Phantom is my favorite rendition that is a direct adaptation. It's like a mix of 80's horror extremes and Hammer that doesn't ignore the seedier nature of the source material. Plus, Joel Schoelen...hubba, hubba. As for non-direct adaptations...could it be anything but Phantom of the Paradise? So much love for that movie. Still a super relevant take on the dehumanizing and predatory nature of the music industry. Also, Jessica Harper...hubba, hubba.

Not the most useful comment here, but....
I often put on your videos to watch & rewatch before bed. Love the sound quality, the background ambient music and your cadence. Not too mention the content itself! Thanks for your hard work!

One of my fave musicals, I played the part of Christine's boyfriend 20 years ago lol.
Also Julian Sands what a sad and strange death that guy had, why go hiking alone in the snow at 50+ in a dangerous area

I first saw Phantom of the Paradise a couple months ago, but I went in expecting it to be about a mall slasher. My surprise and confusion actually benefited the movie. Overall I think it was a better version of what Cannon's The Apple tried do in the early 80s.

High Key Phantom of the Paradise is my favorite movie and I find it better than every other version of Opera. Also important to note that it inspired both Berserk and Daft Punk!!

Oh sweet! I have a pair of little stories dealing with two of the movies.
For one Phantom of Death was among several horror movies one of my fraternity brothers gave me towards the end of my senior year in college. I always had an interesting affection for it.
Also earlier that same year, I came home from college one weekend and due to bad weather I couldn't head back to campus until Monday afternoon. As a result of that (and the fact that school was cancelled due to that weather) my niece and nephew stayed the night with me and we watched some movies.
Now usually it was my niece who would fall asleep first and my nephew who'd stay awake. It was flip flopped this time, with my nephew conking out and my niece lively and up late. The Robert Englund Phantom of the Opera came on I think Cinemax or Showtime or something.
My niece absolutely loved it and talked about it for months afterwards. She was super excited when her eighth grade teacher announced they were going to watch Phantom of the Opera in class....only she didn't know how many adaptations there had been of the story and was a bit disappointed when it was the Gerard Butler one.
And hey Phantom of the Paradise, one of my favorite movies. Discovered that one the summer between my freshman and sophomore year of high school. A few years later, when I was in college, my parents got me a DVD player for Christmas and by sheer happenstance that was one of the movies they picked up. They had no clue how much I loved that movie. Sometimes it all just falls into place.

It would be an interesting discussion over how many of these were inspired by the Universal version and how many were inspired by the ALW version.
On another note, every time I'm reminded of Phantom of the Paradise, I start thinking about a version of the Phantom story with music by Styx, called... Phantom of the Paradise Theater.

great video as PotO is one of my favorite stories and movies. I must admit when you talked about THE PHANTOM LOVER from 1995, you did not mention that it is one of many remakes of another Asian Phantom ripoff called SONG AT MIDNIGHT from 1937 which was the first time the acid to the face was used to cause the disfigurement. the story is similar: a traveling show troupe decide to perform in an old abandoned opera house, the Phantom teaches the male lead, but it takes a turn as he looks like The Phantom before he was disfigured and uses him to communicate to his love who thinks he has returned from the dead. There are five other remakes of this film, besides the LOVER film and is considered an iconic Asian tale. I believe the 1937 OG (pun intended) is available on TH-cam with proper subtitles. I have seen it and highly suggest it. Also I have the 1983 and 89 "Freddy PHANTOM" (as it is often referred to as) as well as PotP (Paradise) on VHS. All are great in their own ways. As always, great job another smash hit.

Not a knock off but there's an animated adaption of Phantom from the 1980s that is almost perfectly book accurate except it still makes Christine a brown eyed brunette with 20/20 vision when in the novel she's a nearsighted blue eyed blonde.

depends. watching the videos usually takes the longest. i usually write while watching and doing research. shooting each episode only takes around an hour each, but then editing usually takes a full day. i can usually complete a full episode in about 3-4 days from start to finish.

      @aaronkelly1762 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I mean, wouldn't surprise me Miura actually modeled Griffith's helmet and design off of the Phantom of the Paradise, considering he liked American movies.
Like, some of the demons were inspired off of the cenobites from Hellraiser, and Guts's mechanical hand was directly inspired by Ash's from Army of Darkness.
