The man was a genius. And when bookers in the South told him the black members of his mixed-race band had to sit separately from the white guys, he simply canceled his tour. Cost him a fortune, but he didn't give a you-know-what. He hired based on merit, not skin colour. And if you were good enough for the demanding Shaw, you were good enough for anything! 🎶
