  • This video shows how I do bark grating of avocado trees. It is used to change varieties using a simple and reliable method. If there are varieties that are not producing in a given area, this is a good method to change them. If there is a tree planted form a seed that is not
    producing good results this is a good method to use the existing root base and change it. Trees can be producing the new fruit in 12 months.
    article at: www.avocadosour...
    4/01/12 UPDATE:I will do a follow up video but I can tell you this experiments was only 20% successful. I may have encountered several issues. One we had a rare freeze in late December 2011 it got down to 29 for a couple of hours and my irrigation system broke. Some of the buds were growing and after that event a lot died. Also I think the time of the year was wrong. YOu cut a tree and bark graft in the winter and spring come and the tree explodes with new growth, it took the wind out of some grafts that were growing.
    As of right now I'm going back to veneer grafting for top working trees is is 95% successful. I will probably try to do it and the summer.

      +Leota Morris Filipine Scanlan I assume that tree was planted from seed. That is the problem when you do not plant grafted trees. A seedling may take 5-8 years to bear fruit and when they do you don't know if it is going to be any good or have qualities suitable for your climate

    Bark grafting did not go well for me. I don't think December was a good time to do it. Only about 2-3 took. The water shoot method also described in my videos is more reliable and it gives you a window of several months even if the first try fails. Basically is full proof

      Yabisi I get that tape from my local agricultural supply cost $2-3 a roll. That probably does not help you. I'm not sure where you are located. Get creative use something similar, cut strips of any material you think is similar and try. May be electrical tape with no glue?

      I'm in Puerto Rico It's very hard to find local places that carry good stuff. I've ordered parafilm using amazon and found some online vineyard supply store where I got a Felco knife. But I need one larger, like the one you used at the beginning. Can you tell me its brand and model? Thanks!

    • @fincayabisi
      @fincayabisi 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm using one bought online that although it not contain glue, it's annoyingly sticks itself and its a headache at times. Looking at the one your using it has the elasticity I need and a kind of matte finish that prevents it from sticking to itself.

    • @GraftingAvocados
      @GraftingAvocados  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yabisi Kakaw In PR I suggest you use the grafting on water shoots. You have similar warm humid climate and Bark grafting does not work well for me or other is So. Florida is more suitable to cooler less humid climates like southern California. The grafting on water shoots is almost 100% successful here. Also simpler, cleaner For that you only need the Shick blade that I use. It you still want to try it in my web pages in the Blog section I have all the info on that specialty blade.

    2:38 well 🤔 can't you just get a translucent bag blow it up put it over to greenhouse it and tape it good so no air gets out and the sun will do the rest over a single month it'll look like the one you just showed before this one. With the same watering ... Greenhouses were made for fruit trees in the beginning anyways so it's really a win win situation.
    You're doing good, keep doing what you do ! 🙃

      2:54 look ... 2 : 1 water and peroxide in a 5 gallon bucket for the root system ... and the same in a spray bottle for the cut stump and bark . . . . Twice a week for a month then do the greenhouse scenario. ... (Infected tooth hypothetically speaking)

I'll keep updating in my web page. My bark grafting experiment did not turned out well about 20% take. I do 90% or better with veneer grafting. I suspect I did it at the wrong time of the year. please don't do this 4:21 don't place paraflim into the tree its not going to heal properly the bark from the front when making the slit and along from the front of the scion is enough to protect it. then you place grafting putty or sealing on the top part of the graft so it wont lose moisture. then if you want you can use paraflim around the scion that is exposed and the bark outside.

    Hi Carlos... I have a well established avocado tree that was mislabelled Little Cado. Two friends have the Cado variety so I know that they are correct since my fruit doesn't look like theirs. I added Jan Boyce and Reed a few years ago and both are growing well. JB for me is my favorite but the original trunks have not given me a decent fruit. I thought I was not picking it at the right time but i've been experimenting all year and even one that dropped, turned dark and when it was finally soft, it was dark and didn't smell great. i decided to cut the trunk that is part of the original tree and leave the other two that are giving me great fruit. I know that I am taking a chance but I tried everything that I could to discover if it was something that I was not doing correctly. I've done bark graft in many other fruit trees and I had good luck with it.. citrus, figs ( need support ) stonefruit. Have you done this or hear of others doing it? I hate to see a nice big tree dying since i love the JB. Also.. I live about 3 miles from the beach in Southern Cal.. Can you recommend a nice variety to try to add to it? It would be nice to extend the avo season with a 3rd variety. Thanks so much.. your videos are great and a huge help.
    Carlos

    Look to an update in the description above. I experience a low rate of success. I will go back to veneer grafting to topwork. It is a longer process but with a 95% success rate.

    Great Video Carlos! How well do the Queen Avocados in the marketplace in Florida? In California we are stuck with Hass, most people are afraid to venture into Bacons, Zutanos and Fuertes. What percentage of sucess do you have with the bark grafting method?

    Have you tried air rooting? Would it work for avocados? If it is doable you could get faster mature root stocks to graft on to. Thanks for the videos, cheers.

    13:40 also don't do this. don't be that cheap and use a cable tie please use parafilm or something else to tighten the area. also look he damaged the bark by hammering it why why this you just make the tree lose energy on healing that area instead of making sure the graft takes.
