This is such a cool way to graft. It gives it a much better success rate due to it having the root stock keeping it alive while it fuses. You can literally keep the trees in the pots and give them away or keep them and plant separately too. Such an awesome way to graft for sure 👍

I have three questions to you
1. Which B variant is good for a Hass (A variant)?
2. How much does a 3 year old Hass avocado tree need water (right now I water it every other day 20-25 liters which are about 5.3 gallons to 6.6 gallons because the soil is too wet even if I live in a very hot climate which does not rain at all in the summer)
3. How is it possible to graft two variants if the tree doesn't have a wishbone structure?

Charles, please show us the actual technique of grafting avocados: how to prepare the scion, how to prepare the host, and how to insure the proper mating of host and scion.
I love your videos. I noticed that on another grafting video of fig trees you used a wet paper towel, I used this method to graft onto my fig tree. Do you use a wet paper towel with all cleft graftings or just figs?

Do you have to support your new grafts by sticks or are they strong enough from breaking?
Cutting rootstock parallel to the ground impedes water runoff. I've seen this cause some very serious problems.
Are there any alternative options in case IV Organics plant guard is unavailable?
Does it still grow as a dwarf. After being grafted with hass and fuerte onto dwarf root stock? Because hass and fuerte are large trees?

Hello ZamaniSahib. Yes, in this example, I grafted in early March and removed the grafts in August. However, 6-8 weeks is all you need to accomplish success... waiting longer on the approach graft just gives the plants more time to heal and create a stronger cambium callous before the parts are pruned. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE approach grafting as you can watch the grafted tissues heal over time before you sever the scion wood from the rootstock. Most people have the highest grafting success using this technique! Approach grafting works best when the plant is most actively growing, so spring, summer and early fall (in warmer climates). simply everything basically takes, 3 days settles, 3 weeks start growing and 3 months nice project and always start on the 22 of the month
4-8 long weeks. Its like watching water boil lol.
I bought a grafted Avocado tree. I know it will produce Florida Avocados. Not sure what the mother root is. Can I graft my Hass and Bacon tree to it? Do I need to graft it below the original graft? Thanks for your help!
Can you put non winter plants onto a Hardy winter tree? Such as an vacodo or fig onto a mulberry and have them last through the winter in zone 5?

I wish that was possible, but grafting only works on 'related' plants. For example, graft white roses onto red roses; graft brown figs onto green figs, graft hass avocado onto fuerte avocado, graft cherry tomatoes onto potatoes, graft lemons onto oranges, graft green grapes onto red grapes, etc, etc. They need to be related to accomplish success... figs & mulberries are not related enough to successfully graft. IV Organic so if I was to graft hass and fuerte scions onto my bacon avo tree which is very cold hardy and doing well in my cool temperate zone in Australia. Will they be more able to handle the winter here since they will be on the bacon rootstock?
IV Organic do you know where I can buy some avo scions too? How much are they worth too? Lol I saw someone on eBay tipping people off big time. They were charging over 200 for an avo scion and the same for postage. I mean you can get a grafted tree for far less than that lol. No one would pay that for a scion surely.
Fantastic video, Charles! Learned so much from it. I intend to experiment on the big Avocado tree we have that grew from a seed but never produced any fruit so far. I have a few questions though. How do you maintain the stability & integrity of the grafted scions? In other words, as they grow branches & eventually start producing Avocados, will they be able to sustain the weight on their own? Or will the weight rip the branches apart? In that case, how do you reinforce the bottom part of the scions (attached to the rootstock), so they won't break & fall apart? Your advice, as always, will be appreciated. Dhanyawaad! :)
Thank you so very much for the compliment Kudala_Mangalooru! :-) All the trees in an avocado orchard are grafted to ensure the quality, size, flavor and reliability of fruit from year to year (yields). Once the scion is successfully grafted, the graft will continue to grow stronger and stronger, from year to year, just like any branch. You should always care for the grafted branch, as you would a non-grafted branch, for example, if the branch is supporting too much fruit, thinning the fruit is a good practice to prevent the branch (especially younger branches under 5 years) from breaking. Furthermore, pruning excessive growth throughout the year (and managing normal amount of growth per year) will result in a much more durable, stronger and longer lasting & compact plant. I'm holding about 10 scions from my moms tree, I'm waiting for a suitable tree to graft onto. Do you know if anyone's been successful keeping them in the fridge for extended time?
I didn’t know you could keep them in the fridge, did you use them yet? Did you find a tree? You can always grow a avo seed and then wait for that to grow a bit and then get another cutting off ya mums tree. That’s what I would have done. But now you have the cuttings I guess it’s best you buy a tree of your choice of variety and that way you have 2 on one tree 😊

WOW! Thank you so much for that compliment Tail End Customs!! :-) Once the tree was topped, and after grafting, the exposed wood areas should be coated. Between the owner and I, only one end was coated immediately, and the other remained exposed until we finally protected the exposed wood and entire tree trunk a couple days ago, now. Moreso than pest damage, we were lucky that the tree did not suffer any major sunburn damage during our many 100+ degree days this early summer... probably more to come... I think this avocado made it through the hottest days okay because it was surrounded by other trees that offered some shade & cooler area around the grafted avocado. And, I like to add IV Organic whitewash to the entire graft area AFTER the successful graft union, just in case some product gets between the two plant parts and possibly interfere with the formation of the grafting union. @@rupakchaudhary7321 Usually the following year-- BUT, you must be careful to remove 1st year fruiting as the weight on the healing graft may become too great & break the grafting wound. It is better practice to not allow the newly grafted branches to support fruit development for at least 1 full year. Charles :-)

If I was to graft a hass and feurte onto a bacon avocado would the hass and feurte then be as cold hardy as the bacon?
I live in a cool temperate zone of Australia. It gets cold here in winter but not too cold. It gets nice and warm in summer though.

Hi, do you Know where i van buy some avocado scion and who Will ship to Norway ?
I want to buy some too but I live in Australia. Not easy to find scion for avocados for some reason here. I live in cool part of Australia so that’s why I guess. I need to look into it more. We are on lockdown so it’s hard coz ya can’t travel and buy some too.
Are you putting your avo tree in hot house? Have you grown some avo trees by seed and want to graft onto them yeah? That’s what I have done.
Not sure why you did approach graft? Standard bark graft is much easier? I’d wedge graft on all those suckers so as to not waste all that growth
He did approach graft to get 100% success on grafting the two type of avocados on to the rootstocks. Doesn't mean other grafting method wouldn't work 😂 it might work but the risk of failure is high in spring and summer. Approach grafting method is the best and most effective grafting methods of all unless you don't mind that it uses lot of resources. Good luck hope i answer your Q?
lepou daso is it best to graft in winter? I mean the wedge grafting method not the way he did it in this video of course. I am wanting to graft onto my bacon avo tree now it’s the end of winter coming up and new growth is what I thought we are best to wait for?
How I know the type of avocado ? I have avocodo trees and I'm don't know their type.
Do they produce fruit?
I’ve grafted many avocado trees in the past but never used the approach technique. Very interesting technique! Why not just graft all the water shoots that grow out with wedge or Veneer grafts. For me this technique seems a lot easier and also you can put multiple grafts for higher success. Check out my 8 variety avocado tree.
Other method doesn't always work out during non-dormant season. This is where approach grafting shine over other method as it can give you 100% success . He actually grafted in the month of march so what he did was appropriate plus it gives a clean graft looks. ( the scions were also actually expensive too 😅 so who likes to ruin the whole process 😂)
lepou daso exactly. I mean you might as well get a avo tree in pot and then graft it whilst it’s still being fed by its original rootstock in pot and then once it’s joined then you get to keep the tree in the pot and grow that too so you have that plus a tree with 2 types of avo etc

I want to turn my bacon avo tree into a 3 in one. So I want hass and fuerte on the bacon tree. I live in cool temperate zone in Australia so the bacon is wonderful for this weather. I’m hoping the bacon as the rootstock will help keep hass and fuerte alive in the winter weather. I also want to get a wurtz and smaller variety’s for pots for my greenhouse too. I might make my future wurtz have some other varieties on it too. It’s so hard to get scion wood for avo trees here. Not many people want to share their avo branches obviously. I know a TH-camr who I’m subbed too, who lives not that far from me and he won’t sell me any either which sucks cos his trees are already thriving in our climate so I thought perfect to get the scions off someone who lives in cooler region like myself. He has plenty of avo varieties too so it would be amazing but oh well he doesn’t want to sell any scions.
