    I think your discussion has a lot of value, especially in regards TH-cam's allowance of this kind of influence. I do in fact think that Nik is on a dangerous path and one that is likely affecting others. Thanks for making a video on this, and I hope you don't have to endure any wrathful responses from Nik. It's also important to remember that most of Nik's on-camera persona is just that; an act. He's extremely intelligent and knows what pulls the views, and what gets him exposure from other creators. I do agree with Xisuma's concerns, and that he has fallen into this vicious cycle of destroying yourself for money, but he knows exactly what he is doing, whether its killing him or not.

    I definitely agree that Nikocado probably has an ED. Years ago he used to be a vegan, and even admitted later on he was starving himself during that stage in his life. I think he’s a prime example of what can happen with disordered eating. He went from starving himself and having a very strict diet, then he got off it, and started gorging on food with no limit. It’s already a struggle to fix that behavior and recover, but during his entire time of being vegan and then not vegan, he was on youtube and documenting this. He realized that doing these crazy things like screaming, crying, having fits, and eating a lot of food did get him views so he’s not trying to stop anymore.

      @@lisathompson5500 Correlation is not causation.
      The same can be said for numerous other videos and advertisements, as well as rewind. Don't be so hasty to make judgments that suit your world-views. In fact, any sane person would find your argument ridiculous, there are far more effective and direct approaches to convince people that their administration is good (ie, boosting the videos to a wider audience, doesn't seem like that's happening right now with their views in the low thousands) than passive control. Even if their actual intent was to promote governmental causes, it doesn't seem to be very effective right now.
      I think that the most plausible explanation is actually the main reason why us users are concerned in the first place- the inability to judge between good and bad videos at the look of a number, causing users to spend more time on the platform ( they may need to watch multiple lousy videos with ads before they get to a good video, as an example). While @italyball fairly points out that this is due to their greed, I find it difficult to believe that removing dislikes would lead to a significant increase in corporate visibility and sales from their publicity videos, again due to the fact that TH-cam have much more efficient approaches. Although big companies typically have a bad track record for conspiring with other big companies and authorities, I genuinely don't think that the truth runs as deep as most people think it is. Just a simple case of getting people to click on more videos.

    A few things to add to this. He’s actively said he that had an eating disorder before starting mukbangs which if we believe him on this (he apparently says a lot of things with it most being false, or just there for the bit) could be why he’s eating like he does. He stated that the reason he was so thin as well as being a vegetarian was because of his eating disorder, and half claims that this is what he wanted all along so if that’s true then I guess more power to him living the life he wants, but it’s entirely possible that he doesn’t realize his eating disorder has basically flipped.
    I don’t know how common it is for an eating disorder to flip like that, but if it were to happen it would probably be to someone who just got an insane amount of positive affirmation from doing the opposite of their disorder like with Avocado. His first mukbang video was insanely popular, and it’s never really stopped being popular for him. With the fact that it’s not uncommon that societal pressure can cause eating disorders him gaining perceived acceptance from it is probably what pushing him down this path. Now again this could all just be BS he’s spewing as he eats since that’s kind of what he does.
    It got mentioned that he ended up crying in his video which is an incredibly common concurrence, and unlike the possible eating disorder I don’t feel like it’s genuine. The stuff he does on screen very much feels like a bit he puts on to gain views and viewer retention, and it feels like he’s playing the clown for a lack of a better description. Now it’s very much not healthy that the “authentic” version of himself he wants to show is that of an idiot uncontrollably crying and shouting while eating an insane amount of food each day, but I don’t feel like him breaking out into a fit of tears is all that concerning (as heartless as that sounds).
    Now as someone who strongly believes in the mentality that being healthy is only good when you’re also happy, and that as a small rule of thumb being happy should come first I don’t necessarily find what Avocado’s doing (fast food mukbangs) as inherently wrong. I also feel pretty strongly that if anyone were to try to recreate what he does would find themselves face down in a toilet regretting it thoroughly, and would realize very quickly how this is not for them (or it is in which case again more power to them). That said though I do feel like the pace that he puts out these videos is very concerning, and the fact that his fan base is only wanting him do mukbangs to the point where they’re demanding it is probably a massive red flag that needs to be addressed.

      you’re correct actually, people cycle between different eating disorder behaviors all of the time! it’s incredibly common for people struggling with a primarily restrictive eating disorder [i.e. anorexia] to eventually go on to develop binging habits [i.e. bulimia, anorexia b/p subtype, or binge eating disorder] especially the longer one struggles without receiving appropriate treatment [which is few and far between anyways]
      i agree that his crying and drama isn’t sincere, but also agree that he likely has an eating disorder! combine that with the monetary and social pressure to continue doing what he’s doing, i fear it will be very difficult for him to improve…

    • @EosDoesStuff
      @EosDoesStuff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      "Flipping" from starving yourself to binge eating is actually pretty common. I'm recovering from an eating disorder, and I've had urges to binge on junk food, not to the extent that Niko does, though, because like you said, I'd get sick if I tried to eat that much at once. That's what makes it concerning- he definitely didn't go from starving to binging this much overnight. It's one thing to eat, say, an entire pizza, vs all of that stuff. He had to actively power through it and force himself to eat that much in order to build up a tolerance to it, probably because of the success of that initial mukbang video. He was how much it was bringing in, and greed took over.

    • @metronicmagician1816
      @metronicmagician1816 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@EosDoesStuff yeah his intake definitely seems like it’s something he’s grown over time. In the video when the old and current Avocado get shown side by side that earlier pic I believe is from one of his first mukbangs, and it had a lot less food (if what’s on the screen was the only thing eaten), and that’s acting like he actually ate all of that as well. As someone who’s documented competitive eating and competitive challenge eating it’s totally believable that someone could increase their capacity through regular bing eating like what avocado does, and not even realize it to add to that.

      Worth mentioning that an eating disorder isn't just "I eat too much" or "I eat too little" an eating disorder is when a person has an unhealthy relationship with food. Certain traits we commonly assosiate with an eating disorder really are just symptoms and there are many complex types of eating disorders. It's likely his disorder hasn't flipped but rather both extreams are symptoms of the same condition

      @@Stettafire yeah. I know of things like Bulimia where it’s a hybrid of the two usually through a cycle of gorging and then purging (barfing) right afterwards. That said I do believe that this would be just a shift in his eating disorder than something like a hybrid since he hasn’t flipped back and that’s a large part of these hybrid eating disorders.

    I read some articles on him and actually when he was vegan he still had unhealthy eating habits, he seems to have several eating disorders. He had a time when he was vegan that he wouldn’t eat anything cooked to 118 f and was loosing hair and teeth. He said generally his mental and physical health was terrible then too. Now in many ways it’s worse since he needs a breathing tube and a scooter to get around. But I’m just pointing out “healthy” eating can become unhealthy when you develop an eating disorder around it.

      Yeah, as simple and "logical" as it sounds, that phrase is pretty harmful and I've felt its consequences for years because it gave me an eating disorder that I'm still struggling with. Since I was 8 I started gaining weight nonstop in a very constant and even way, no matter what or how much I ate. I've made countless diets, used to count every single calory I ingested, starved myself and nothing stopped the weight gain. Years later I discovered that the cause was that I have PCOS. Only now, after years of treating my PCOS I finally started losing weight, without changing eating habits or anything, just by treating the cause of the weight gain. This "you only gain weight because you are eating more than you need" mindset almost killed me

    Nikocado Avocado is actually a tragic individual, with how he's rewarded for essentially destroying his life
    Now, not trying to shame anymore for discussing him and his behavior, stuff like that does need to be addressed and helped, but I feel like videos talking about him in themselves don't do much good. They kinda point people towards his channel, they're going to go there see things for themselves, maybe comment - just engaging with the content in general, which will only close the circle
    Also, how do you help an individual like that? We never had an individual have harmful behaviors perpetuated by giant audiences on such a scale in such environments (to my knowledge, if we did, please enlighten me). I initially thought termination of his youtube channel, or social media presence in general might do some good, but it'd just cripple his livelihood

    Hi Xisuma, I don't think he is leading a sad life at all. I watched a youtube video by SunnyV2 that explored this idea and I agree with i. I think he is leading a happy life but he is pretending to cry on camera so that people make videos about him and give him attention. I don't know if this is the reality but there is a high chance this is the case since a lot of his videos are titled "my breakup" or something similar to that where he and his boyfriend say that they have broken up and are through. And the next day both of them appear in a video and act like there was never a fight in the first place. I'm sure these fights are fake and are added to the video so that people could make videos about him and give him the attention he wants. He wants people to say that he is leading a very sad life and is in a toxic relationship. If I remember correctly there is even a video where he says that he dislikes poor people. I feel that he will do anything for attention.
    I feel it is a good thing that you are talking about mukbang Xisuma. Like Pewdipie said, it is an unregulated part of youtube where youtubers can literally torture an animal and eat it while it is still alive(someone actually did do that)without censorship. Mukbang also promotes consuming or attempting to consume a huge amount of food which can either lead to massive amounts of food wastage or very bad health.

    Genetics are a much bigger part in weight and health than people realize.
    I dont consume fastfood, sugared drinks and eat vegetables and fruits every day.
    My calorie consumption is well below what I'm supposed to eat.
    With all that I'm still overweight.
    Compare that to peers of the same age and lifestyle, who down several energy drinks, a bunch of fast food and candy throughout the day, and are still as thin as one could be.
    I'm sure there is stuff in my diet that could be considered unhealthy, but it doesn't warrant me this body if genetics didn't play part.
    Both my mum and grandmother have/had the same body type as me ,whereas my brother and father are reasonably lean. All with the same diet.

    • @rat3106
      @rat3106 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      unfortunately genetics don't really work that way (unless you have an actual genetic disorder, which most people don't). it's more likely that you're either eating more calories than you think, or burning less. plus, the people that you see eating all that junk food and still staying thin aren't genetically lucky, they just eat less food than you might think - i've been underweight before while eating nothing but junk like chips and chocolate because i was still eating less than i burned. and if you are 100% certain that you're eating well under your calorie limit and not losing weight, i'd recommend getting that checked out, because that shoudn't be physically possible
      (if this comment comes off as rude i am very sorry i'm trying to be informative but i am also very high atm)

Some do it by eating, and others do it by drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, or using drugs. etc. I would even say that a large consumption of time in front of a screen can also be a way to achieve a feeling of satisfaction, to get through the many stressful and frustrating things that happen around them / us. I’m not 100% sure what you have in mind but saying things like „TH-cam should look into this“ has me feeling kinda upset, worried it will end in censorship. I also don’t think these types of videos should get „rewarded“ less.
    In my opinion TH-cam could add a banner under the video (similar to the information about the corona virus in videos about the topic) but shouldn’t interfere much more as every individual needs to think for themselves. If you know you have problems with something; maybe don’t watch these kinds of videos. Also the content creator should be able to deal with the decisions they are making. If they need help they need to contact a professional and if they get greedy for views and harm their health ist kind of on them (i know some people need help and maybe get addicted to the views they are getting, so you cant apply this to everybody).

    Barely even a minute in to listening to this.
    I went to look at his channel page.
    And the thumbnails alone make me feel sick (and honestly really scared)--
    Wow...
    Yeah, he and anyone else who is doing "challenges" like this... they need help. (I may expand my comment after watching this. But as a general background for a bit about me, around about 10 or 11, my family started eating a lot healthier. My mom and dad joined a group at our church which was about eating healthy and living healthy--so physically and mentally, a whole Bible study as well as encouragement group--and my mom's still involved to this day. But around that time, I got super sensitive about eating healthy. So stuff like this hurts my soul tbh.)
    I slightly regret looking into this before lunch, tbh. My appetite has gone down quite a lot.
    I really appreciate the whole making it known that you don't know everything, because so many people talk like they're right. Resulting in toxicity, driving people away, or being really exclusive.
    I am by no means the definition of "healthy". I hardly exercise and I eat out a fair amount. But I do care about eating well or at least decent. (My family has gone down to one desert at the weekends or maybe a few more on special occasions.)
    For me though, it was the more holding myself back from eating junk food because of insecurity (less of loosing weight and more "I'm a good person if I follow general guidelines of eating right" because I've never really worried about weight as I was fairly skinny at the time. Looking now, I don't feel that way so much, but I'm trying to accept wherever I'm at, knowing that I'm not stuffing myself and I eat decently).
    So my problem was in the opposite direction by trying to be hard on myself, which coincidentally almost messed up a friendship with one of my really close friends back in 6th grade. (It's fine now, three years later, but I had valued my "morals" over other people which created problems. So I'm trying to be better about it now.)
    Thank you for whoever listened to my big ole' block of text.
    I wish you well for whatever you're struggling with. You've got friends here in this community who I bet will support you in almost anything (completely serious saying that. These content creators are amazing as are their viewers).

    I believe his "crying" is just his video persona. The person that own the channel Meat canyon (do not watch his channel if you don't like disturbing cartoons) shares the same option as me, and on his second channel "Papa meat shares his thoughts on it and I think he's spot on.

    In my humble opinion, prolonged fasting shouldn’t be used as a weight decrease method, not without consulting an doctor or dietician. It can be a good way of cleansing, but it’s very individual how how your body will react. If you want to lose weight, the simplest thing is to start eat healthy and exercises. Start slowly with daily walks, set a pace goal for each day, don’t overdo it but do it regular. At least a 15-30 minutes brisk walk. Stop eating fast carbs, i.e. potatoes, bread, pasta etc. Go for the food that gives you long saturation. No eating after 8 pm. No sodas, even the diet ones because they trick your body to store the fat you eat and you just get tired. There’s no quick fix, losing weight will take time. Changing your eating habits so they still suits you, your not to punish yourself, just change your lifestyle to something more healthy!
    A good measure is losing like 0.5 kg/week, I did 1kg/week in the beginning of my change and lost 12 kg in as many weeks. But then got other healthy issues and had to slow down on the training a bit. Still losing weight, but in a slower pace. Down 18 kg now, but has a bit more to go. Changed my diet and is happy with it and can keep it up for the rest of my life because I’m still eating tasty food. I miss pizza and pasta, but until I can use up all those fast carbs they give you, I keep away from that.
    Just remember, losing weight takes time but you feel so much better both in body and mind!

    It's really sad situation, on the other hand, this exact reward system also helps other with metabolism problems like Yuka Kinoshita, a mukbang YTber from Japan that needs the money to feed herself because she needs the very big meal, and the YT earning feed her.

    This is inevitable or at least encouraged by any ad based platform. Ads mean that the only thing that matters is watchtime/views.

    Yeah but TH-cam will never label a fat person as abusive behavior because that is fat shaming and everything is about body positivity.
