    In this video we address commentors who create unfair pressures on creators, mostly revolving around calling things a "knock off". Hermitcraft is a friendly community and has nothing but good feelings towards other communities enjoying the game like Legacy SMP!

    The point of MC is to have fun and everyone does this in a different way which could end up appearing similar if you're not aware of the details. I've been lucky enough to have played MC for over 11 years and see how the communities evolved. In the beginning people told me what I did was too different to fit into general Minecraft gameplay but now that it's considered more mainstream I get told I'm just copying others, despite me doing my own thing for 11 years. Assumptions are the mother of all mess-ups and unfortunately people make alot of them.
    Not taking breaks is the biggest reason that I've notice people quitting MC for extended periods of time. It's difficult to watch this happen to people time and again. I personal don't take breaks but I've also been playing the same game all this time.
    Misunderstood messages are often the short ones which goes back to everyone is short on time so they write brief but often easily misinterpreted messages.
    Good video

      Ray, My first MC break lasted 3 years. Major burnout from playing on and staffing a large SMP. I’ve now been “back” since 2016, and running a SMP, taking 1-2 days off per week. Ray coming from a fellow Cappie I know you can go and go but I encourage you to be deliberate about taking breaks. Love your content and your work, and I have nothing but respect for you. People get so protective over creators sometimes, they can’t seem to accept that 2 people can take a concept and run 2 completely different ways. Take you an JcTheFluteMan for example, sometimes you two remix the same things but the end products are only similar in the words that are used and who said them, yet Jc gets called a copy cat, even though it’s nothing similar. Love both your faces, love this community, just wish the toxic parts didn’t shine through so bright.

    Hi X! Thank you very much for touching on both of these topics. I 100% agree that we as creators also need to focus on that the intention could be positive; and that's what I also do myself- That's basically a whole other thread at that point, haha.
    Overall I intended to hopefully inform people at least a little on how their comments 'could' be interpreted so they think more about their wording in order to make it more clear and break said communication barrier.
    I think both the creator and viewer alike can benefit widely from this small change of wording in feedback.
    We have more access than ever now to different forms of communication, yet our ability and access to interpret those is significantly weaker.

    • @AnnaBomBanana
      @AnnaBomBanana 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      If someone in the audience feels they must make a criticism, I think the only way is to be constructive and positive. Negativity gets people nowhere. I definitely agree with ‘could’ rather than ‘should’. I personally have never felt that MC players across servers have copied another. And anytime they’ve been influence by someone else’s design, they’ve always said ‘based on N’s’ or ‘influenced by O’. That’s supportive of others and gives credit where due. It’s part of what makes HC and Legacy wholesome and great fun to watch.
      I think maybe those that try to tear people down are venting in the wrong place.
      I love how each creator I watch has different styles and ways of doing things. It broadens my understanding of what is possible with MC (I’m a total noob. If a group of noobs could have a noob, that’d be me) and has sparked a few ideas of what I could do within my own world.
      You guys are awesome and supportive of each other. Wels sent his raid to fWhip (never watched fWhip before) and liked what he was doing. Followed for sure!
      I hope you all are able to continue to enjoy what you do!

There's a video by a TH-camr (i forgot who) that compares Hermitcraft and another SMP most of you have probably heard of, DreamSMP, and saying that HC is dying. This caused a lot of people to be pissed off, obviously. And because both DSMP and HC are now probably the 2 most popular SMP's at this moment, there are many rivalries with the fanbase, fighting who's best and who's better when in reality, HC and DSMP are 2 very different SMPs. DSMP is a roleplay server meanwhile HC is just normal people playing Minecraft, with some roleplay in it. The rivalry between these 2 SMP's fanbase is very toxic and scary at some times. An SMP is a Survival Multiplayer Server. You can't blame a group for having a survival server where they play together being copycats. I get a lot of my inspiration from TH-camrs like Grian and Bdubs who are builders, but I've developed my own styles. Other people make SMP's because they might have been inspired by Hermitcraft for example, but then getting backlash from Hermitcraft "fans".

    We must remember than ~75-80% of Hermitcaft fans are between the ages of seven and fourteen. Being a child doesn’t immediately mean that you’re emotionally immature, but children by and large are easily influenced, and don’t have the venire of politeness we learn to have. Not all children are toxic, but child-heavy fanbases tend to be more “toxic” than other fandoms. Whenever I see these rude commenters, I check grammar, vocabulary, spelling, etc. If I think they’re a child, I cut them some slack. They will hopefully learn and regret their toxicity later in life.

      I went into it more at-length in PearlescentMoon's comment, but I'll say something I think you missed. These people, whether they be children or not, have been included into a community, generally with kindness, and I think its important they understand the example thats been set for them. I think its important for them to understand they need to take responsibility for their actions.
      And in the case of them being children, they wont develop into the adults they need to be without understanding that. There's a limit to an adult's patience and understanding, after all, we're all having this discussion because someone reached that limit.

It’s legit the entire reason I have to awkwardly stand there whilst older friends are chatting about who they watch, because I know some people who have lost friends just because others were thought of as just another toxic stan. it’s part of the reason I have strayed from the dream smp and prefer hermitcraft. Along with the facts that I dislike long streams and role play, Hermitcraft’s community turns out a lot more mature. Sure, you stumble upon toxicity every once in a while, but me and my friends get branded as “toxic” a lot less. Unfortunately for Dream smp I really can’t say the same. A friend of mine just talked about it in a reply, and got quite a few comments calling her toxic. It sucks.

      @@yangzhang3167 I think the reason that Dream SMP receives a lot more hate from outside is not necessarily because it’s a worse fandom than Hermitcraft (though that very well may be the case), but rather because more people have been exposed to the Dream SMP fans than the Hermitcraft fans, combined with the fact that, at one point, Dream SMP was more popular in general (especially on everyone’s favourite platform of Twitter - there are many times where they have got their stuff trending), and, therefore, more people have seen more of the worse bits of the Dream SMP fandom (even if the proportions of toxic people vs. normal people was exactly the same).

    Part of it, I think, comes down to size. LegacySMP may seem like a challenger to Hermitcraft for some since the creators making it up are relatively large. I don't think this changes the fact of trying to have fun with internet friends, however: Buddies are buddies whatever the subscriber count. In the same vein, SMPs bringing talented creators together isn't some exclusive, unmoving genre.
    Small of a channel as we are, we've already received comments like "this is just worse Hermitcraft" or "why are you guys making a worse Hermitcraft recap" even though the doings of the server is something we have no control over. We don't hide that fact we are greatly inspired by Pixlriffs and ZloyXP, and we don't think recapping a fun SMP is something that should be exclusive to them either.

    As a community member now creator as well, Fans need to understand that there are only a few number of formats and videos styles that attract viewers and retention time and those formats and style can only be mixed and matched so many time before the Creators your watching all start to "resemble" eachother but in their own specific way!

It did spawn from the inspiration of Hermitcraft, but with it being an open server, and our head admin installing plugins instead, it's spawned it's own vibe in some ways...

    I've been a musician most of my life, and professionally most of that. And as someone who loves Minecraft as a creative outlet for when I play I've noticed a lot of this myself. One thing my career has taught me when it comes to this subject I didn't see covered here is that we as creators can't assume the people commenting and critiquing have the same depth of understanding and nuance we have of our craft. For instance I write a song that's entirely my own creation, but many people tell me it sounds exactly like something they hear on the radio. I can go into how that chord progression has been used for hundreds of years to evoke the emotional response I wanted to which is why I chose it, or that the song composition in most western music has been basically cemented in this way for almost 100 years itself, but I can't assume the people telling me that understand the choices. So unless it gets brought up I just thank them for the compliment (regardless of their intent lol) and that's where it ends for me. There's a limited number of blocks in the game, same as there are a limited number of notes to make a melody with. There's limited number of mechanics at play, same as there are a limited number of musical theories that work in modern music. Even if you can promise no outside influence over your creation, someone somewhere will be able to make a correlation to something else they enjoy, and as a creator I have to understand that, and make the choice of how much or how little I let it effect me personally.

  • @trixilynn13

    Two points, I have noticed. One is we often forget that platforms like this and twitch are filled with children, who don't have a grasp on how to properly talk or comment on social media. I'm halfway through life and find reading comments is a great way to gauge someone's age.
    Secondly I find when watching live feeds, both sides can be short and almost mean with their comments. I understand that no one wants to be asked the same question a thousand times every time that they stream, yet content creators often become very frustrated and become short with their followers.
    I just started watching hermitcraft. I watch 22 of the 24 hermits. I'm starting to not enjoy hermits on twitch because of the way the interaction with their followers. I find some hermits to to kind and enjoy watching them, others not so much.

    • @Nisilsey
      @Nisilsey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      That is a good point. I've actually had that happen to me, where I was really annoyed by a user commenting on a livestream day and spamming to contact another hermit. He got called out and banned a lot, but always came back and continued.
      By chance I came across his TH-cam channel later and it was actually a little kid. Not even 10 years old and he was just extremly excited that this hermit visited his server once (and left really sweet signs). He didn't know what to do with his excitement so he spammed it in chat... I felt different about his behaviour after I knew his age and I think a lot of the hermits might have been nicer to him as well had they known about that. People really hated on that little kid in chat... And some of the hermits were really harsh in their words.
      Now I really try to remind myself that there might be a kid on the other side that simply doesn't know better yet, when someone is really annoying. You can oviously say something to stop that as a streamer... but you should always watch the way you say it.

    • @tacosandwich1485
      @tacosandwich1485 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yeah, agreed. I absolutely love listening to X's streams and hearing his take on life and current events but sometimes I think he forgets that some of his audience is younger kids when he "trolls" as a joke. Some people in the chat won't get the joke and will actually believe what he says. (As an example, the other day he was joking and pretending that he had pranked mumbo by destroying his base earlier in the stream as if everyone had missed it, which is all in good fun until you see the chat of younger kids believing it and saying that it wasn't kind, etc. They didn't realize X wasn't serious).

    • @karinabecerra3846
      @karinabecerra3846 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      nanino I agree that if you knew this was literally a child you will act differently, however, without that being known in these interactions, as a rule, respect should always be given to and requested from the audience. If a kid is not respectful of the rules he must be called off so he will learn how to interact with that community. He may receive a rough response but is not the youtuber’s responsibility to educate this child with love, but it is the youtuber’s responsibility to care for his community so he will call people off so respectful interactions can be maintained in his community.

I know as a let's player, your racing game audience probably wouldn't show the same level of interest in Minecraft videos, so it might not seem worth putting that out there. But hey, you might get some interest and make people happy because of that very thing--someone watching a Minecraft video could idly click on your channel and go "oh sweet! My favorite racing game!" And surely some of your current subscribers would be thrilled to see you playing Minecraft. So I say if makes you happy, go for it! Share your joys!

    I once left a comment on a Hermit’s video that was largely positive, but i also added that a certain part of the video was really tough to sit through because it was really slow. They took it badly and said in their next video that if anybody had a problem with how they made their videos to watch something else.
    This struck me as speaking directly to my previous comment, so i scoured the comments section of the video i had the critique for, and it turned out i was the only one who had said such a thing.
    It broke my heart that i had hurt their feelings in anyway, the comment was said with love and compliments and i had thought i had critiqued properly.

    This is a big issue in other genres as well. I used/do to run a outdoor/hiking channel for 5ish years, and it never really went anywhere, only about 1-2k (and that was slow). I had videos that grew eventually fast, but they were not my best videos, or they were build videos. So I got types of comments like these. Or I got "wtf, this is a terrible video" comments all the time. One was, I making an improvement to some gear I had, and a mod existed out there, but it wasn't what I wanted, so I figured lets try something else out. about 50% of the comments were about the mod that existed (even though I mentioned it the video a couple times and explained why I didn't wanted to do it), 25% were complaining about my lack of skill, and 10% were just complaining. I had a few other videos like that with similar results. Where the videos that were amazing went no where, and the video that were ok at best, did amazing in views, but got berated. So I eventually just lost motivation to pick up my camera, because the channel that was fun to do, no longer was fun to do. I may do something else, but I haven't found the motivation yet. I've tried to revitalize it, but haven't found it yet.

And even things like: Sarcastic, Mean, Hateful, Serious, etc. Thats just me, btw a while back and and a couple of friends started a smp a while ago, we never uploaded anything but did mention other smp's like hermitcraft and TB (truly bedrock).
