As someone with a violent temper, I get where Will Smith is coming from. Having that kind of really strong emotion almost taking over you is not easy to deal with.
But the key is almost. You always, always (unless you have psychiatric mood regulation problems which is a different thing altogether), have a modicum of control. It's just a lot harder for us passionate folks.
I remember as a young girl repeatedly hitting my friend because she made fun of me and just mid-punch, my senses came back and I was horrified with what I was doing and apologized immediately. It doesn't excuse what I did but that sudden burst of emotion sometimes just blinds you and you get tunnel vision.

  • @EvesterBee
    @EvesterBee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +212

I’ve been doing some research around this myself. From what I’ve read, people are bringing race into it due to the importance and significance hair has for Black women- a topic that Rock has made a documentary on and so therefore should be aware of how offensive his comment was. It’s also interesting to think about how a joke around someone’s disability or chronic illness is much less accepted when someone is physically and visibly and disabled, compared to invisible illness. Imagine the outrage if a joke had been made about someone in a wheelchair, I think the reaction would be very different. I hope that we can at least learn from this that jokes around someone’s illness or condition need to be left in the past (unless you are talking about yourself, as humour can always be a coping mechanism).
Personally I don’t support violence in the answer to anything, even though you can argue that it has created much needed change in the past. I think a big issue here that you touched on is that there’s so far no consequences. If someone in a public place had punched someone, they’d at least be escorted out the building. The fact that Smith was applauded and given a Oscar shortly after really highlighted to me how the rich and famous are almost exempt from the laws and social expectations that us ‘average’ people are.
I would say that having a blind view of race isn’t always appropriate or sensitive, as I don’t think it’s as simple as that. Race plays such a huge part of identity and upbringing, and there’s so much ingrained racism in our education, Nhs, police systems etc that it’s impossible not to consider it.
These are just some thoughts I’ve made after doing some reading! Happy for anyone to disagree or correct me on things
Edit to add on as a clarification: I don't think I explained my thoughts on disability very eloquently! I'm coming at this from the point of view of an ambulatory wheelchair user. When I'm using my chair I get treated like glass, people are much more careful and considerate. When I'm not using my chair, people seem to forget I'm disabled. Having a visual respentation of how ill someone is can really change how they treat you, and how they react to jokes. I think its interesting to think about this difference and how it might change perceptions of the situation.

I feel like this is the exact textbook definition of "Two wrongs don't make a right", chris was wrong to make a joke on something that is that close to the bone, either knowing or not (and if not then he should research his target better before making jokes like that) and he got put right but Will should have said something rather than responding to violence straight away (these things usually start with "Hey dude, that's not funny", kinda what I think Will resorted to afterwards with "Keep my wife's name outta your damn mouth" but then the other party usually backs down or responds and responding gets you hit)

The thing is this is the oscars-chris is a comedian, it has long been tradition to poke fun and “roast” the audience. The three are(maybe were now) friends and have known each other for ages, a joke about her starring in g.i jane may have been in bad taste because it is a sensitive topic for Jada, however inherently its not like its bad, the movie g.i jane is about a gorgeous women who happens to be bald. Will even laughed at the joke, then when he saw his wifes reaction took a 180, its clear they have a very unhealthy relationship(ahem the entanglement stuff) and still do.

@@jabariwiththebois5765 Will, in his apology, mentioned how jokes at one's expense are part of being in the career, and you learn to roll with it.
I think he may have been riding the mood with everyone else, until the moment he saw pain in his wife, whom he probably expected to be laughing as well. Then he reacted emotionally to her suffering, and went full protector mode.
I don't condone his reaction, but I understand how he got there.
I will say that, while he did get violent, I do feel he still managed a measure of self control. He slapped Chris, and stopped there. He did not punch him, or try to beat him up. It was a single punitive strike. This thought is supported by what he shouted after.
Will messed up. I am not defending his actions at all. But he isn't the type to usually act like this, and I do believe that is in part why things stayed away from legal action. Chris declined to file a legal complaint, and they both have apologized to each other, and others, for crossing lines.
I think all the drama comes from them being public figures. If two mundane folks had the same interaction, then decided to talk it out after, the world wouldn't be looking to crucify one or the other.

And where the fuck was her eye roll when people were making entanglement jokes and where was his aggression when that was happening? Defending his wife's honor would be a lot more understandable if he had that same energy with everyone but now it just looks like he picked a easy target

I think a lot of the reaction to the event is warped by the fact they were well known people in a “controlled environment”. It makes it harder to look at it as “an audience member hit a comedian because of a joke he made”. It’s easier to see it as two people in your friend group that had a fight. Partly because of parasocial relationships, perhaps.
I agree that saying he was justified because he was defending his wife isn’t a good reason and not progressive at all. But it’s a very entrenched trope hence why people find it appealing.

I just thought it was quite funny (or embarrassing if I’m being serious) that after 30 years, he finally won an Oscar and literally nobody cares because of the way he handled himself. The joke may have been insensitive or ignorant but that is irrelevant in the context of his response. Will Smith has tarnished his image of a likeable, charismatic guy. However, I can’t see him having any substantial drop in popularity because people liked him before and they will continue to do so by either justifying what he did or moving on and forgetting

Totally with you on this - pretty much all of it. Be it the toxicity of "discussions" on Twitter or on how a reaction being totally comprehensible doesn't automatically legitimate or justify it.
I stand by that violence is always the last resort of someone who is otherwise helpless. Not judging on a general basis on why that person is helpless. There can be many reasons for that, some of them really dishonourable, some maybe understandable, but violence MUST always be the very last resort and by no means an accepted way of going into discourse, no matter how "good" or bad the reason for it is, else we have way more severe problems than differing views.

I understand how it is difficult for us as white people (and especially non-american white people) to realise the race element in this conversation. I am someone who has worked with a lot of black women and understands, to an extent, historical context relating to black women and their hair. Black women in slavery were forcibly shaven and dehumanised for their hair texture, and even in present day, natural hair is discriminated against in schools and the workplace. Hair was and still is culturally very important to black communities in a way that it isn't in white communities, and this of course is exemplified in countries like America where segregation is still recent history. Women's hair is also tied to concepts of femininity, and since black women have been repeatedly throughout history wrongfully viewed as 'less feminine' and 'more masculine' by oppressors this is also relevant.
I think it is also worth considering the way black men are portrayed in media in relation to violence, but since this is a topic I'm much less educated about I can't speak on it. I do agree that the disproportionate and extreme reactions on twitter and other platforms aren't helpful, and that Chris Rock likely wasn't being malicious in his intent.

I feel like with a little more control and thought Will would have realized that maybe the better thing to do would be to go up there and ask for the microphone, which I'm pretty sure he would be allowed to do if he could get away with slapping him, and then make a statement that they do not appreciate jokes about his wife's illness. I'm sure he would not only be seen as chivalrous but it would also put the embarrassment of the situation on the host rather than him.

I think that part of Will Smith's overreaction is that he was actually shown laughing at the joke just after it was told, He probably then either saw his wife's reaction or she saw him laughing and then his mood obviously changed. I think that whole thing of him marching up there and slapping Chris Rock was him overcompensating for that.

The other thing I think should be added is that had Will Smith stayed quiet and dealt with it later, that joke would have gone unnoticed. My response would have been to walk out of the auditorium with my wife to show my displeasure with dignity and grace, but that's just my take.

Theres this social commentator/educator named FD signifier who went over this subject in remarkable depth looking at the life of Will and some cultural effects. He carries a very insightful, chill and compassionate conversation.
On the race topic he brings it up more to point out how will has had a difficult life and has been under pressure for years for choosing to be more soft spoken in the past and not assertive and aggressive. it likely has influenced him to be very defensive and pressured to do something more substantial.
Outside of the racialized experience (as I am a white person), Alot of the factors Signifier brings up I have had personal experiences with in some form or another such as the pressure and hostility ive received for not being more intimidating or loudly defensive in past relationships.

You can tell by how beforehand he says "you know i love you Jada" or something along those lines that he knows the joke is not appropriate yet he says it anyway. Plus making fun of someone's appearance in general is not great in a public place if you're not certain of the reaction.

About the issue with race in this question, it is relevant. Black hair is an issue which is important in discussions around race and racism and has often targeted black women in particular, in fact Chris Rock himself has previously worked on a documentary about black hair which was in large part inspired by the issues his daughters had with body image troubles because of their black hair. This is why many members of black communities worldwide have come forward to criticise Rock's actions and stress that however disproportionate the response was (and obviously Smith's response was wildly inappropriate and disproportionate) it shouldn't be used to minimise Rock's actions or absolve him of blame from a massively loaded and inappropriate joke which shouldn't really be considered "light-hearted humour".

There are multiple angles of the slap. It was clearly two actors acting out a role. In the video (left angle clip) you see Rock bracing for the slap (shoulders and face) has full eye contact with Smith, does not take a defensive posture, he also keeps his hands at parade rest. Body language is everything. Rock knew the slap was coming and the video clearly shows it.

I think it's pretty straight forward to me that Will Smith shouldn't have gotten up and smacked Chris Rock. I'm a firm believer that words are NOT violence. Even if very offensive.
That's doesn't mean you shouldn't defend yourself against offensive jokes. If you can, respond with an even better joke. If you can't, there are still better ways of responding, including making a statement, asking for an apology, or simply leaving (in paparazzi world, that's a pretty serious thing to do, especially if you go on to win an Oscar!).
However, as X has said, more interesting to me is the response to what Will Smith did.
Loads of hypocrisy came out of the mouths of people who normally advocate violence against political opponents like "beat up Trump supporters" (and vice versa). And there were also those who condemned Will Smith that themselves have advocated imprisoning or fining or charging those that have made offensive jokes. While America may protect your 1st amendment rights, citizens of the UK and Canada have been fined and in some cases imprisoned for offensive jokes.
As I said before, I'm a firm believer in free speech. I don't believe anyone should be assaulted or fined or imprisoned for what they say, short of longstanding exceptions such as inciting violence, shouting fire in a crowded theatre, and libel/defamation.
In other words, if you're offended, there are better ways to respond than hitting someone or fines and prison.
It just bothers me when people are hypocritical about these things. Pick a lane. Is punching a comedian okay or not? I say not. But some people say, depends on the joke, which is pretty arbitrary.

    • @80nomads74
      @80nomads74 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree. I get really annoyed with hypocritical people. I think they don't truly believe what they're saying and are only taking that side because it benefits them at the moment. Either that, or they don't know what they're talking about and lack conviction.
Also, I feel like the "it depends" people really just mean that they should be the one to decide when the action is right or wrong. Which is not how laws should work.
