Someone's always trying to reinvent the wheel or in this case tire. Those open-sided pieces of rubber will be useless in mud in the winter time because when it freezes it's going to drive like it's driving on rims. I thought the legal speed limit in most States was 65 to 80 miles. Why would you need the average tires to be able to go 120 to 150 mph. It's easier for the cops to catch the guy when the tires blow 😁
Living in Michigan I have always used All Season radials since they first came out. I haven't had any problems with traction.
Scott, Great work! God bless.
Firestone Steeltex would outlast them. 🤣✌

Did they ask Scotty Kilmer?
Years ago, I had a friend that worked for American Motors in Detroit. He worked in durability testing. He would bring me a new set of Uniroyal TigerPaw Plus tires every other year that were brand new but discarded and scraped. So for 15 years or so I didn’t have to pay for new tires!
I’ve been hearing about this exact airless tire since I was 18. I’m 36.
Yep not holding my breath
Not cost effective at this time. Don't mess with the powers that love obsolete technology.
Yeah same here
I have sweaters older than that, lol.
Keep working hard Scotty everyone appreciates it 😊
If Scotty quit working, not only would it drive his wife crazy, he would probably tip over and die. I admire people like that and wish I could be more like them. 👍🏻
@@sweetdrahthaar7951 I agree with you 👍🏻😉
@@sweetdrahthaar7951and it also would drive US crazy😂😂😂
F1 race tires don't last a few races. They last about 12-40 laps. (They have different compound tires at each race so grip and durability varies)
Dry weather F1 tires are also very soft, sticky and shed a lot of "rubber" on the track.
As I’m sure every F1 fan knows, the wheel/tire dimensions are set by regulation. Until a few seasons ago, F1 used tiny 13 in wheels! They had so much sidewall that they handled a significant amount of suspension duty.
You can see good examples of the airless tire on commercial grade lawnmowers. I looked into them for my mower but they’re like three times the cost of a standard lawnmower tire. Maybe someday but not right now.
I remember on my first car I had bias ply tires, and I used to put winter tires with studs on them every December and would take them off at the end of March. Those winter tires were great.
My Dad use to run those in snow but their a headache when you have to change for snow here in the south.
God bless!
Had the foam cores on a bicycle in the late 90's. I will go ahead and say it more than doubles the weight. Tires still rot.
i absolutely love the airless lawnmower tires. I do mostly yard restorations and reclaim neglected yards for house flippers. and I'd easily go through 4 to 6 tires a season. Those airless saved me a fortune.
Yeah, my stepdad always used tires on his tractors and lawnmowers with those solid tires
Anyone got a price for airless car tires? Has to be ridiculous
As a guy that sells tire patches, tire valves, tire gauges, and tpms sensors this is disturbing, good thing I sell wheel weights too i guess.
One problem with the airless tires is when snow gets packed into the inside groves and freezes. They have to cover the sidewalls with flexible rubber or there going to have serious problems in places where it snows.
@@garyssimoit does not. It takes a lot of energy to melt the ice and in order to even get any temperature increase you have to start driving but you have just been sitting there for the whole night with your icy tires now how do you think you're going to be driving to get the temperature up? The distribution of ice is not even. Lastly any temperature increases have to take you above the freezing and if not then no ice will melt.
Yep, they'll definitely need some sort of a non-structural sidewall to prevent this issue. I imagine that would be an easy solution.
The airless tires are not rock hard, its rubber so the inner grooves flex and contribute to a smoother ride. One thing for tire manufacturers to consider is to use a telfon infusion with the rubber, as the car moves the ice will crack and fall off as the tire flexes with the weight of the vehicle. Centrifugal force will also expel the ice from the tires.
I absolutely agree with Scotty! I drive with winter tires on all of my vehicles from November through March and either a summer tire or all season for the other months.
That's fine if you have some place to store them. A lot of people live in apartments, I being one of them and I have no space to store four truck tires. So I just get the best suited tire for my needs. Where I live the roads are pretty well maintained during the winter months.
I live in upstate ny and we get quite a lot of snow and bad winters, and I use all weather tires instead of all season tires. Have used them for 15 years with no issues in the bad winters here, good traction even in a foot of snow.
I also live in upstate NY, and use snow tires in winter, all season tires in summer. Do all weather tires affect your summer gas mileage? I've been looking at all weather tires, and that's my only concern. I haven't been able to get a good answer to the cost trade-off.
@@WhiteTiger333 I don't know, I don't pay that close of attention to my gas mileage to notice, must not be a big difference. I do know that the all weathers are between winter tires and all season tires though, perfect for me, as I'm not changing them for winter then back to summer. Not going to buy 2 sets of tires when this is totally fine for me. I've driven by people in SUVs stuck in the snow plenty of times though, and I drive a small kia.
@@rdizzy1 Thank you!
Puncture proof tires have been in existence for over 60 years, available mostly for the military. We do not see them for the consumer thanks to the rubber companies.

Always love these types of videos from scotty❤
The explanation of the variety of materials in tires sure helps explain why they are so difficult to recycle.
I worked in a tire factory for 33 years. The pressure on the sidewall is the max. The correct pressure is always 80% of the max pressure. Goodyear made this run flat tire 15 years ago. I think it was too expensive to be a practical tire that the public will buy.
The correct pressure depends on the load on the tire. There are weight and pressure charts.
Nasa are doing some amazing work with airless tires so full credit to them. Airless tires are surely the way to go.
I can’t wait to see those on all types of cars! 😊.
The next thing better than that would be the tireless tire. Maybe like a UFO 😅
@@Mr.QuantumC0reI agree
@@henlohenlo689very good point and not one I'm qualified to answer but I hope airless tires can be mass produced because they would save so much hassle.

Rehashing this topic, for those that don't watch his archived content.
I have owned vehicles that just required basic maintenance. Batteries, brakes, coolant changes. Fuel filters. Oil and filters. Shocks and tires. 4 speed sticks and 3 speed automatics. No computers, just solid state ignition(better than points)and electric choke carburetors.
My preference is all-weather tires
I only buy all-season-tyres. I don’t drive much at all. My speed is very moderate and snow is becoming an ever lesser problem due to global warming.
I live in Berlin, which is quite flat for the most part and low in altitude, and Germany is densely populated...I wouldn’t be lost in the wilderness if I had an accident here.
Exchanging back and forth summer and winter tyres and storing them is too much of a mess. All season tyres are a good compromise in between and the insurance regards them as adequate for winter, just in case of a crash, I wouldn’t lose any of the coverage.
Here in Wisconsin I've been using Michelin X-Ice snow tires for year's. The difference between all season tires is amazing. Get good gas mileage with little tread wear and good handling. Great tires.
Very informative....He mentioned all-season, summer, winter, run-flats and racing slicks. But he forgot to mention a new category of tire..All-Weather, which is a hybrid of an all season and winter tire...He even showed the Michelin Cross-Climate2 while talking about all-season tires...The Goodyear WeatherReady, Nokia Encompass AW01, and the Michelin Cross-Climate2 are currently the most popular all-weather options....Cooper(now owned by Goodyear) General (owned by Continental), Hankook and Pirelli also offer all-weather tire options.....
I love ❤️ as a woman how you broke all this tire information down so it helps me understand what's what and I'm not just being sold whatever is high in price at the tire choice!
No, i'm sure Scotty is a man.

Hey Scotti thanks for the info yeah I'm going to watch it again Scotty thanks a lot I learned something
Wow, I never knew the tires were so complex thanks Scotty for the information BROTHER !

Thank you Scottie these are my favorite kind of videos that you do you are a very awesome presenter and super extremely knowledgeable.
Great info 👍🏼
No run flats for me. Expensive, hard ride and heavier.
When I lived in cold weather I used winter tires, once the weather warmed up I switched to all season tires and I've had no issues.
I use BF Goodrich all season tires and have for years. They've never let me down. I'd be interested in the airless Michelins though.
CORRECTION: F1 tires are changed several times per race, not per season.
I live in Nebraska and have just been driving with winter tires year round. I like the extra traction and don’t like paying for mounting and dismounting each season or having to store the off season tires
I wonder what the best kind of tires are for Florida. The extreme sun and humidity bake the roads and I feel like tires go quicker down here than up north.
I remember the discovery channel had a show about future technologies. This was like 15 years ago or maybe a little more. Whenever the city sent out people to cut grass, their riding lawn mowers had airless tires. Started noticing that about 8ish years ago. Good to hear it's finally making it's way down to the masses
Good video. I use all season tires on my 2007 toyota tacoma access cab trd sport 4x4 4.0L V6 automatic. We have all four seasons where I live. Have been thinking about trying all terrain tires.
The best tire for a 4 season climate is "all-weather", which delivers better performance than all-season with a slight trade-off in tread wear. I've been using Nokians in Northern Illinois for the past 8 years on an all wheel drive and it's pretty much a beast in any weather.
I've used those before and really liked them. They were excellent on wet roads. The best traction.👍
Hey Scotti thanks a lot about the tires I just learned
Will they make the uptos tire for sport bikes? Thank You Scotty. 💯👍👍
Used winter tires last winter for the first time. They cut down on slipping & sliding. Switched them out but will put them back out as soon as it snows.

Came to Scotty's channel because I need new tires for my corolla (I live in NH) and there are so many choices I wanted to see what people liked and disliked. Dealership (I am shopping around) recommended Yokohama AVID GT (I think that's what is on the car now). I only have 46000 miles on the car but 2 of the tires have been plugged. About a year ago I drove over a small wrench .Drive a lot in Mass where the roads tend to s--k. Some tire manufacturers are having buy 3 get one for a $ tire specials for October which is why I am looking now.
they dont absorb as much shock as good old rubber. the under carriage will take a beating

Hardly ever see snow or similarly cold conditions, so all weather tires for me. Then even handle the gentle snow just fine. Much better than most drivers I see anyway.
Just FYI, F1 tires (or tyres in F1 speek) only last a few laps. The actual tire life depends on several factors, such as track surface roughness, tire prep & use. As well as the compound (C0 being the hardest, while C6 is the softest). There are also two wet tires referred to as the Intermediate and Extreme.
I don't know about the recommended pressure. Like my f350 front tire pressure is 60 psi and rear is 80 psi. But when I look at the front tires, they bulge out. Looks like it will wear on the outside faster. I inflate them to 71 where the front looks like all the tread is making contact. Does that make sense, or am I wrong?
Love your videos.
Thank you for a great informative video, Scotty! When we lived in CT (now in Fla.), I used to always use winter tires on our vehicles, switching back to all season or summer tires in the warmer months. Specifically, I installed Bridgestone Blizzak tires for the winter, mounted on steel wheels, the best winter tire I have experienced. The one drawback was that the softer tread compound resulted in faster wear, so it's imperative that you take them off as soon as winter conditions are over. We lived in an area that was at a higher elevation and with some steep roads, both of our cars were AWD, the winter tires were a huge advantage for winter conditions. The airless tires offer a lot of advantages, but I wonder what happens if, probably inevitably, debris, stones, etc., gets caught in them?
Blizzaks are by a long shot, the best winter tire I’ve ever used up here in Canada.
I hope the Uptis will be low rolling resistance for trucks too.
Very interesting video thanks
Winter tires flex in cold, this helps clear snow out of the tread.
Not having a lot of money I've always gone for budget tires. The ones I get I usually get all 4 at the same time and with the closest (and sometimes better) ratings for noise, rolling resistance etc as possible. I never have any handling problems. Being an ex driving instructor i don't drive hard. Are we being snobbish with "I run mine on ContDunlMich X9000 Supersport Dynamic Thrust tires "? I'd honestly like to know. I live in North England so all season drizzle/ sunshine.
Thank s!!
Scotty, I have a 2011 Toyota Venza FWD V6, and it's still running very strong. It's finally time to buy new tires. I live in San Diego, CA, and I would like your opinion on the best set of tires to buy for my Venza. Love your channel, as you have not steered me wrong yet !!! 😎
Michigan driver here. Winter tires are absolutely a good idea here. Our insurance rates are the highest in the nation so one accident will jack your insurance by 40% over 4-5 years.
Because of this the cost of a set of rims and winter tires is a no brainer. Much safer and way cheaoer than jacked insurance for 5 years.
One of the best salesman ever!!
Do it yourself.
I use all season tires and I've been keeping my eye on those air less tires for a few years now. I'm really curious to see how they do because I'm a delivery driver and go through a lot of tires.
My dad used to swap to snow tires every December until April. We lived near dc. I think he did that until about 1980.
Extreme performance summer tires for the 7. The dry AND wet traction on the last set I got was incredible.
is that a good tire for Florida?
All terrain and durable tires for my '96 Grand Am (stays parked for mostly in the winter months);
Kanati Mud and Snow for my Chevy 3500HD DRW 4x4 work truck;
Mud and Snow for my 4x4 Dodge Nitro and finally,
The best I can get for my wife's AWD Nissan Murano Plat.
They got these on zero turn mowers.
Since I have a front wheel drive that rides pretty low, and I live in Alaska, I'll switch between Summer and Winter tires to reduce my chances of getting stuck.
I can see sidewall damage being a bigger issue and gunk getting in them or shrapnel from the road
I use all season tires on my slow camaro 😉 very comfortable and quick 🤜🤛
I love how all your video thumbnails are you pointing at something
Yokohama YK740... Best tires I ever had.. Quiet and responsive..
Super sweet graphics ...
Something no one considers about airless tires is that they are NOT adjustable. If you need more traction in a tough situation (like deep snow or mud) you CANNOT AIR DOWN an AIRLESS tire.
Critical points. Very rough ride on soft suspension or light car. Wear is no different on an airless bicycle tire.
Also what happens when the spacing gets full of snow or frozen slush?
Airless tires have higher rolling resistance (lower efficiency and MPG) and harsher ride quality than pneumatic tires
@@melanierandolph6953 Definitely will mess with the balance of the wheels, affect the ride making it harder, mess with the wear patterns, probably damage suspension, not practical at all
@massinsaahddin999 thanks for the info. Will NOT be purchasing this tire at anytime. Thought the never having a flat sounded great but I will just keep up getting the lug nuts off if I have to resort to a blow torch. Much appreciated.

I've never thought much about tires as you know. My concern has been the tire width. I know a P235/60R20 is not as wide as a P245/60R20. However, I don't understand mud tires 33/12.5R20

I like All Weather tires. Dramatic improvement for my cars.
You didn't mention the difference between all-season and all-weather tires, which my tire guy assures me are not the same thing. To hear him explain it, it mostly comes down to the all-weather tires having a little cartoon mountain/snowflake.
Dogs will love those tires
Airless tires will be great for off roading. I popped my tire during off-road. After being stuck in the middle of desert, now I'm ready to get airless tire, whatever it costs.
You should always put less air into an tire than you have in it when it explodes. Old saying. 🙂😁

Oh Scotty, My head is spinning! I believe it all boils down to, there is no perfect tire. We are all pretty much screwed, on how much the manufacturer wants to charge us. And we must understand that the government, or state will not help us with this issue. They are all looking out for each other! One hand washes the other.
You're right. I bet those airless tires will be heavy (less MPG), expensive, and have a rougher ride. No perfect tire
If they want Me to buy those tires then they better make them have more miles than reg tires else hell no.
Tesla maintenence cost on tires is much higher than reg cars due to tires vs oil changes

airless tires are for commercial or heavy equipment, they do not work for passenger vehicles because they will not stay balanced with mud and snow in the wheels. Run flat tires are great, motorcycle tires have been doing this for a long time and they do work, speaking from experience!
Good Lord they were talking about airless tires coming out back when I was in my late forties or early fifties. I've been wondering the last few months what the heck ever happened to them.
used all seasons all my life live in the rust belt never been stuck front wheel drive.
There's no way these tires will work in Cold snowy climates. snow and ice will get caught in the structure and making a rough ride. needs a sidewall to cover it up to keep debris out.
