- Foreign companies have become targets for China's sweeping counter-espionage laws. Multinational companies are complaining that China is becoming a hostile business environment as the security state's reach expands. China is also imposing increasing exit bans on foreign nationals.
The case of a Taiwanese businessman accused of espionage and stealing state secrets exemplifies conditions in Chinese detention.

My friend who learned perfect Chinese and was writing a thesis about the Chinese legal system had to pack up and flee the country because espionage charges were leveled against him. Now without access to Chinese archives and libraries his thesis is dead and all his life plans are up in the air.
Your story is like many innocent Chinese who suffer as your in usa?. So fair and square?? Just blame all this problem onto usa unnatural ways of doing things??.. not mighty china??.. who just follows usa doings?...
It always was, just because you enter a snake's nest and didn't get bitten right away doesn't mean you aren't in danger
EU doesn't have such a law?

You can always find snake dens outside China.
The snake returned to its old ways while it still could.
Ms Meng of Huawei was kidnapped and illegally detained by Canadian authorities without charge. And so were many Chinese scientists detained in the US .
No amount of money is worth your freedom. Time, if lost, is something you will never be able to buy.
Freedom is where Chinese scientists left America for good. Otherwise, FBI, NSA and CIA will go after them for espionage.
Well said. I wish more people would understand this. All over the west have lived in comfort and freedom for generations and have started to take things for granted. Somebody, somewhere paid our freedom with blood. We need to stop making deals with dictatorships.
Freedom of thought. Hope you can have it.
WHY ARE THEY COMPLAINING? THEY WANT DECOUPLING, RIGHT?
at least that's what they say...😂
if you want to help them do that, they complain.
Decoupling is a consequence of a hostile environment in China. Not that the west do not want to do business with the chinese, it is just that CCP makes it impossible.
Oh my goodness I'm absolutely shocked. I know that person! That's Morris Lee! We worked on some non-profit projects in the past. He is a genuine person.
Dear Mr. Lee
"Freedom is priceless" is the most important sentence you said!
Expecting freedom from a dictator is a contradiction.

3 spies working for US were cought in around 3 months period, that's why china increase their anti spy effort.

De Risk with the vassal states of the imperialists is a necessity. China and Russia must work together to pull out the teeth of the US starting from its lapdogs (Europe) first.
Europe is getting rich from China. Now China has realized that what it needs is a worthy trading partner and not a group of hypocritical countries like Europe

When a Nation such as China announces they are your Adversary, Believe them.
For the USA at least, if the State Department issues a warning, and companies still persist in having their employess be in China, the company should be strictly liable for any detention. These companies send employees to China and when something happens, they go running to the US government to do something. Maybe they should have assessed the risk to the employees in addistion to the financial risks. Let the family can sue the company for being irresponsible.
That's why individual companies--and employees in companies--are reassessing business risks, not just countries. As the Taiwanese man aptly put it, no one wants to be forced to spend months or years of detention in the CCP's "democracy university."
What china is doing is illegal. And inhumane but its peanuts in the mad world we live in.
Corporation have used the US government for there benefit for over a hundred years.
I think you can sue if a travel advisory has been issued.

So how many foreign citizens have been "arbitrarily" detained over the last couple years relative to the % of foreigners visiting the country?

I see this as a win win. Decoupling is the end game

We must increase the rate of decoupling with China, no matter the cost. The time for spineless leadership or political correctness has long passed.
I’m sure EU will take care of the issue, by inviting Chinese to EU universities. Maybe some financial guarantee, if businesses will transfer some technology to China.
That’s what EU has done and are good at……

To me there never has been, just because of china being a communist rule.
And I’m old enough to remember remember my school teacher and her giving away Mao’s little red book….
I’ve seen how technology and knowledge was “exported” to China, getting supported by EU and local governments, even there was no reason to do so.
EU is done with China, they maid their bed. Now they must lie in it.
EU companies desperately need their market. Just ask the VW CEO why he has invested a billion dollars in setting up an EV research and development center in Anhui province China. Rather than in his own backyard.
When US or EU impose sanctions, it is called rule based order but anything China does is called arbitrary. Huawei CTO was detained for 2 yrs in Canada while in transit.
That’s because US and EU have representative forms of government.

My God, look at the details... The guy in the video was arrested for taking a picture of police in the streets. He was forced to admit to charges of espionage and once released, was prevented from leaving China for 2 years. Go to 8:47 to see.
Mr. Burns, speaking at a security conference in Colorado, was asked about the loss of the recruited Chinese and other agents that U.S. officials say began in 2010 and was caused by a combination of betrayal by a CIA officer and a breakdown in a clandestine communication system.
“We’ve made progress and we’re working very hard to make sure we have a very strong human intelligence capability to complement what we can acquire through other methods,” Mr. Burns said.
Is there video of this so called security conference in Colorado?

The treasonous CIA officer who leaked info to the Chinese was arrested 5 years ago. As many as 30 or more operatives working in China may have been found and executed. It was a devastating blow to the counter intelligence community not only for the U.S. but also other allies. If the operatives were Chinese citizens then it could mean their entire family and extended families might also be imprisoned and executed too regsrdless if they were innocent or had no knowledge. "Becoming a hostile business environment". No. China was always a hostile business environment, because the terms under which most foreign companies could do business in China (submitting blueprints, IP, etc.) are conditions that would not be tolerated in western markets. That foreign companies accepted these conditions for the sake of profit is their own fault, but now they're crying foul and "expressing concern" when this grossly exploitative arrangement has merely become more transparent.
By the way, those same companies that fueled China's decades-long economic boom without tempering the totalitarian state with democratic soft power are also responsible for the increasing threat that China presents to Taiwan, in the South China Sea and even in space. Way to go, Apple!
