  • Foreign companies have become targets for China's sweeping counter-espionage laws. Multinational companies are complaining that China is becoming a hostile business environment as the security state's reach expands. China is also imposing increasing exit bans on foreign nationals.
The case of a Taiwanese businessman accused of espionage and stealing state secrets exemplifies conditions in Chinese detention.

My friend who learned perfect Chinese and was writing a thesis about the Chinese legal system had to pack up and flee the country because espionage charges were leveled against him. Now without access to Chinese archives and libraries his thesis is dead and all his life plans are up in the air.

For the USA at least, if the State Department issues a warning, and companies still persist in having their employess be in China, the company should be strictly liable for any detention. These companies send employees to China and when something happens, they go running to the US government to do something. Maybe they should have assessed the risk to the employees in addistion to the financial risks. Let the family can sue the company for being irresponsible.

Mr. Burns, speaking at a security conference in Colorado, was asked about the loss of the recruited Chinese and other agents that U.S. officials say began in 2010 and was caused by a combination of betrayal by a CIA officer and a breakdown in a clandestine communication system.

"Becoming a hostile business environment". No. China was always a hostile business environment, because the terms under which most foreign companies could do business in China (submitting blueprints, IP, etc.) are conditions that would not be tolerated in western markets. That foreign companies accepted these conditions for the sake of profit is their own fault, but now they're crying foul and "expressing concern" when this grossly exploitative arrangement has merely become more transparent.
By the way, those same companies that fueled China's decades-long economic boom without tempering the totalitarian state with democratic soft power are also responsible for the increasing threat that China presents to Taiwan, in the South China Sea and even in space. Way to go, Apple!

There will be still some value for the diplomatic and intelligence careers however.

If the answer is you are prepared to risk your freedom and your employees freedom, congrats! Enjoy yourself. Don’t go crying to the US government if you do. You have been warned. Same with the EU.
