There are 2 true masters up north. (can google their phone numbers) For trucks, if he's still around, Pi Sa at Sa Turbo Shop, Chiang Mai, the most elder of the family, grouchy old man. He knows the Thai driver/mechanic of the Mitsubishi Baja Rally truck. They put together a Mazda B series for me which just crushed anything it ever went up against up to 200km/h. Would go as fast as you could shift. It was his favorite model truck. Then for motorcycles, a different Pi Sa, Sa Moto service station, Chiang Mai. Not only with his knowledge as a mechanic but his skill as a rider is greater than most in MotoGP. His intuition is next level. He'll know how to make you faster before you say a word, just by looking at you and your bike. If you happen to go through Chiang Mai, you should drop by their shops for a chat.
In Thailand, anything with an engine was meant to be raced. Driving around there is always a bunch of guys racing for fun and excitement. Driving a night is especially cool. The roadworks with the giant arrows made of neon tubes to tell you how to avoid the hazards are reminiscent of Blade Runner. The whole thing feels like you are part of a video game. I love Thailand. Unreal and so real at the same time. Amazing.
I love the random encounters on the highway late at night, recently I saw a modified Honda Jazz racing and keeping up with some fancy BMWs and Benzes :D
I totally understand your excitement about watching Thai people racing all types of vehicles. During the 70s I would go to the Seattle drag races and they had a "Run what you brung" class or "Challenge" race between the different dragsters classes. You would see everything from VW Bugs racing Fleetwood Cadillacs with all seat space taken by their buddies, to custom vans against Camaros. Truly entertaining. Great video Chad. Thank you.
When I worked in Singapore my driver took his HiLux to Thailand and wow did he pimp it out it was full luxury and the sound system was crazy after that day driving to work was sweet as.

Sadly proper ambulances are exceedingly rare in Thailand. The "ambulances" are commonly referred to as "rescue cars" and are either vans or more commonly long bed pickup trucks with a canopy/camper in the back. They are rarely "equipped" with anything more than a pair of stretchers with (optionally) some tie-downs. There is no oxygen bottles or first aid equipment or anything "fancy" like that. If you don't bleed to death on the way to hospital you can make it. Anyone can start an "ambulance service" as long as they don't faint at the sight of blood. It is very unusual to find a trained paramedic in anything but a dedicated (and rare) doctor ambulance (that also might not have an actual doctor in it). If you point this out to a Thai, you will be told it is "better than nothing", which I can not argue about. It is exactly only what it is. Traffic fatalities are not highest in the World (that would be Libya) but they are trying hard for the No. 1 spot. Ninety percent of the victims are motorcyclists and pedestrians, but paradoxically driving in a car in the cities is just about as safe as in any Western country due congestion and slowness of the traffic. Car accidents in the cities are _very_ common, but serious ones are more rare. Highways are a different story. Van drivers are the worst offenders there, then base model pickup trucks. The official statistic are also off by at least 50% (as per independent analyses and the occasional admission by the officials). This is due to the police only counting fatalities at the scene of an accident, not including those that perished in the hospital or on the way there. Some areas are worse in this way than others, but it is not unheard of for policed to tell (or pay for) the rescue car crew to take already dead victims to hospital as "live" to avoid paperwork and/or bad statistics.
I remember driving a Hiace for the first time and being surprised by how quick they were unloaded. No wonder the delivery drivers and contractors always drive like maniacs in these things.
@@apb1441 The V6 is only available in the new longnose models, which are not very popular in Asia, and the ones that are in Asia are almost all diesel I4s like these flat-face ones. The diesel I4s are still surprisingly capable- instant torque at low revs, and good tuning potential.
