I'd like to purchase a Toyota Champ truck. Can you purchase one in Thailand and then ship it to America? I'm sure that you would have to pay the Chicken Tax and it most likely will pass all of the EPA standards so that it's legal to drive in America. Not 100% about that but I think it would be legal.

Even if it cost $15k and met all US safety and emission standards, it would never sell here; dealers can't get you hooked for 84 months @ 9%, and it's not brodozer / 'influencer' cool. Very refreshing seeing this, as it reminds me more of how it used to be in the US - Pickups used as pickups, not vanity projection devices that used to be the cheapest new Toyota vehicle on the lot. I remember when a new Corolla cost more than a basic new Toyota truck.

In the '80s, the government introduced a new law that made it harder to import new cars from abroad. Furthermore, in the '60s, a tax called the Chicken Tax added a 25% tax to light-duty trucks, which the Hilux was. To get around these laws, Toyota started making cars in the US, as that would avoid those regulations.

What we really need are Japanese bubble cab trucks like Canter, Dutro, Elf, and Atlas

The Suzuki Carry orders must have dried up with this diesel Toyota Champ.
It is not surprising that Suzuki is stopping to manufacture vehicles in Thailand.

I’ve never seen a Champ with an automatic transmission or adjustable steering wheel, I wonder if those were modified as well.
Nice cell phone cut-ins with the bear 🥳

That 2.4 (2GD) engine is already potent with 150hp, 343nm (mt) and 400nm (at), very enough and sufficient already for that chassis. What more if they install their 2.8 (1GD) with 200hp and 500nm! 😎

Interesting video. I loved when mini trucks did that back in the 80s. I don’t see any of that extra axle up in Northern Thailand. I have a diesel Isuzu pickup. Wondering how much it would cost to add another axle.

    LOL about the dog.
The dogs down in Mexico are no different. Kind of dangerous at night, as i've come across a few sleeping on the road, on a bend.

Awesome little truck. I am shopping for one now, but I don't want any of the massive things they sell over here. A 4 cylinder turbo Tacoma can cost about $75k. Not from me they won't. I will refurbish 20 year old Tacoma before I pay that price and still pay about a 1/3 of want the want for a new on. I want one the many small trucks I see in the Thai videos.

If I am going to import this truck, I will get it from the Philippines instead which is the Hilux Tamaraw. They are basically the same thing but with LHD version instead of the RHD from Thailand which is perfect for US and Canadian roads.

I believe it's actually a Thailand exclusive, they don't sell it anywhere else unfortunately.
But they do know the Thai people customize everything they own, so it's the perfect country to sell a barebones Truck and let other shops/companys customize it to every customers specific needs. I'm sure there's a shop that makes you a nicer interior, build a camper addition, ambulance module or a small ramp truck for transporting a jetski, scooter or sidebyside, or build a rolling whirlpool to pickup ladyboys.
