    How much fluid are you adding as the fluid is being pumped out?

    • @MasterJacks
      @MasterJacks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Just do your best to keep up with what's coming out. If it starts pushing air, turn off the truck and add some fluid before continuing. Too much isn't really a problem as it only can flow so fast down the fill tube. It doesn't have to be a prefect balance. When clean fluid is coming out, I like to let it get a little low (maybe pushing a few air bubbles), then I shut off the vehicle and reconnect my cooler line. I then make sure a little fluid is showing on the stick then start it and check and adjust the level as needed. It's easier to add fluid to get to the correct level than take it out.

  • @jimmymurphy2957
    @jimmymurphy2957 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    would it be damaging to the transmission if you just drained it and then filled it while it was running? I just dont want to buy extra fluid because it seems like the new stuff is going to mix with old a little bit. meaning the color change will take longer...meaning more fluid needed to add.

    • @MasterJacks
      @MasterJacks  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ideally this service is done after dropping the pan and replacing the filter. Then you add the 6qts to the pan, hook up your lines for the flush, and go straight into the flush. That way you never mix of old and new fluid.
      Less ideal, and I'll likely be berated for this, you'd be fine to begin the flush without adding fluid, until you're pushing air, then turn off the vehicle, add 6 qts, then restart the vehicle and continue the flush until you get clean fluid out. Should only be 6 more qts. Total system capacity is 12.2 qts.
      Even if you did allow them to mix from the outset, and just flushed 12qts through, your transmission would be happy, regardless of final fluid color.
      Whichever method, be sure to check the final level and adjust as necessary. Hope that's helpful, thanks for watching!

    Do you change the filter out first then the fluid?

    • @MasterJacks
      @MasterJacks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, if you do the filter, fill the pan, then set up the flush before you start the engine, you end up saving the amount of fluid needed to do the flush. If you do the flush first, you end up dumping clean fluid when you drop the pan.

  • @kaevinr6541

    Would you flush the fluid first and then change the filter or vice versa?

      Ideally do the filter first, fill up the pan, connect to cooler, then start the engine/begin the flush.
      If you do the flush before changing the filter, you'll be dumping new/clean fluid when you drop the pan to do the filter.

    My silverado is at 105k miles, I'm not sure of the servicing done in the past but I plan on checking using the vin. But with the mileage it's at I've heard a transmission flush is dangerous, is a fluid drain and fill up still an option?

    • @MasterJacks
      @MasterJacks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for the question. I personally wouldn't hesitate to replace the filter and exchange the fluid on a transmission with 100k, especially if it's currently shifting as it should. Your chances of prolonged transmission life are better than if you leave burnt/spent fluid in it.
      Explanation: A fluid exchange or "flush" simply adds new fluid to the transmission while the old fluid is being pumped out. New fluid is a good thing for your transmission. It has friction modifiers, heat resistant properties, cleaners, etc. If you have a slipping/poor shifting transmission prior to a fluid change, replacing the fluid can unmask an underlying slipping condition. Bad fluid causes internal wet clutches to wear more rapidly. The worn material from the clutches is then suspended in the fluid creating "false" friction and temporarily hiding the slipping condition. If you replace the fluid, you no longer have worn clutch material floating around. In this situation, a fluid exchange (flush) would seem to make the problem worse, but in fact, the problem was already there, you just found it by servicing your transmission.

      Auxiliary coolers can be installed either before or after the radiator. If your auxiliary cooler ties into the line going to the bottom of the radiator, the method shown in this video will work for you. If your cooler ties into the line coming from the top of the radiator, you'll need to disconnect the line coming out of the auxiliary cooler headed to the transmission. If that's the case, your fluid will come straight out of your auxiliary cooler into a waste bucket while you add fluid through the dipstick tube. Same process as the video, different access location. Don't Flush, it doesn't Clean magnet or filter, just change filter and fluid. I changed my Transmission filter gasket, fluid and seal, and I was cussing engineers, another 1/2" clearance for the exhaust that is directly underneath would have made this a quick change. I tried to remove pan and it hooked on the back end and prevented removal.
    So I removed the Transmission filter which took some maneuvering and thought that would help, it didn't. I do things right and had to remove pan, to clean and change the Seal as well. HERE IS HOW I DID IT! I had the pan loose and rotated it towards the curved front end of the pan and it cleared! I was underneath looking up, I think it was a clockwise action, but you will only be able to do it one way. I cleaned a bunch of fine clutch wear (113k) off magnet and reused the gasket and then removed the seal by using the shiny chamfered area around it by using my small ball peen, and a screwdriver size forked end small nail puller, collapsed it and pulled it out with needle nose pliers. It was very stiff and old and may have lasted, but I doubt it. I then took a deep well socket, as I remember it was a 22 mm, (whatever fit the exact collar on the seal), and tapped lightly and patiently until it fully seated and tapped it once more for good measure. As far as the Pan installation, I already had the Transmission filter and seal installed, and they say don't put anything on the reusable gasket and because it was not flexible, has raised ribs and had crush type bolt holes, it was easy. I did not have to rotate or do anything special, as I recall I put it in from the front and bolted a couple to keep it in place and used my nut driver to snug all of the bolts then just used a 1/4" drive socket and extension and used my 3 finger tightening method in a tire lug type sequence. It shifts better and smoother! And these 4L60E and 4l80e transmissions are subpar anyway, I have changed a few on different Chevy trucks over the years.
    This is for my 2011 4x4 Avalanche truck. Good Luck!

      Nothing you present is actual fact. A fluid “flush” involves chemicals and IS NOT recommended. A fluid “exchange” as presented in this video is the accepted practice in industry and is completely safe for a transmission in good working condition. You are replacing the friction modifiers and other worn out additives in the fluid. The only thing that isn’t recommended is leaving the old filter in place. ALWAYS change the filter with a AC DELCO unit. And don’t get caught up in baseless old wives tales.

      Make sure to watch the video in it's entirety. You'll have to add fluid to the pan while it's being circulated out in order to "push" all the old fluid out of the system. Once the pan is empty (2-3qts), if you're not adding fluid, the pump will cavitate with air and no longer circulate fluid. Adding new fluid is meant to take place simultaneously with the discharge of the old fluid until it's coming out as clean as it's going in. Hope that helps, good luck!

    Around 50 seconds you say 3/8 inside diameter tubing but the video says 3/8 outside diameter

      I’m wondering if they packaged it incorrectly. The box says 397 but it looks smaller than the one you show in this tutorial. Could yours be incorrect?

      @@Mattsharona sorry it didn't end up working out. I believe that changed in 2014. Maybe you could find a cooler line for cheap at a salvage yard or online and cut it off to make your own adapter. You may also be able to unscrew the adapter fitting from the radiator, match the threads, and create your own setup from the hardware store. Baring that, there's always a dealer of last resort that could do the service. Thanks for watching, best of luck!

      @@MasterJacks i have the 6 speed. Not sure why it would be different but oh well. I have a hand pump and ill just pump out some from the dipstick and refill it a few times. Your method seems much easier though!
