1. What is Reported Speech?
Reported speech (or indirect speech) is when you tell someone what someone else said, without using their exact words. Instead of quoting them directly, you change the structure to fit the context of the new conversation.
Example:
Direct Speech: She said, “I am happy.”
Reported Speech: She said that she was happy.
2. How to Form Reported Speech:
When turning direct speech into reported speech, you usually:
Change the pronouns.
Shift the verb tense back (known as backshifting).
Adjust time expressions and other words if needed.
A. Basic Rules of Tense Backshifting
When moving from direct to reported speech, we often shift the verb one step back in time:
Present Simple → Past Simple
Direct: "I like ice cream." → Reported: She said that she liked ice cream.
Present Continuous → Past Continuous
Direct: "I am eating." → Reported: He said that he was eating.
Present Perfect → Past Perfect
Direct: "I have finished." → Reported: She said that she had finished.
Past Simple → Past Perfect
Direct: "I saw it." → Reported: He said that he had seen it.
If the reporting verb is in the present tense (e.g., says, asks), then you don’t need to change the verb tense.
B. Pronoun Changes
Change pronouns according to the context of the reported sentence:
Direct: "I am coming to your party."
Reported: She said that she was coming to my party.
C. Time and Place Changes
Words that reference time or place often change as well:
Today → That day
Tomorrow → The next day / The following day
Yesterday → The day before
Here → There
Now → Then
Example:
Direct: "I’ll call you tomorrow."
Reported: He said that he would call me the next day.
D. Reporting Questions
In reported questions, the word order changes to a statement structure, and you don’t use question marks.
Yes/No Questions: Add "if" or "whether."
Direct: "Are you coming?" → Reported: He asked if I was coming.
WH-Questions: Keep the question word (who, what, where, etc.).
Direct: "Where are you going?" → Reported: She asked where I was going.
E. Reporting Commands and Requests
To report commands or requests, use "tell" or "ask" followed by the infinitive form of the verb.
Direct: "Please sit down."
Reported: He asked me to sit down.
Direct: "Don’t touch that!"
Reported: She told me not to touch that.
F. Reporting Suggestions
For suggestions, use "suggest" + gerund or "that" + subject.
Direct: "Let’s go to the park."
Reported: She suggested going to the park.
Direct: "You should see a doctor."
Reported: He suggested that I should see a doctor.

3:21 I think in this sentence 'She said that they might invite them to the dinner ' Should be ' She said that she might invite them to the dinner '. (Actually I'm still high school student. If my correction is wrong please tell me. )
I started to watch your channel recently. You are a good teacher.
Yeah that's what I was about to say
And for the last one I think it should be :
She said that she had to submit that assignment by 3 pm the next day
Yes, you're right. Although it could be inferred that it is "they" due to a family dinner that she could be organizing. But still, the most logical way would be to use "she".
That was what I'm still wondering.... now.
Everyone here before exam day?

To speak english u don't need to follow grammer. These are for schools and exam. To speak fluently pratice with your frie. Watching "family guy" cartoon is very good.
@@asuraravana9186 *grammar *practice *friend Well my guy, the least I can say is that you really need to practice your grammar... Seriously without being mean or nothing, using a proper grammar will make people take you serious dude because you can't give advices while doing 3 mistakes in just 2 short sentences ...
@@212YOUNESS yeh Im practicing Grammar for my competitive exams.. but to speak in real life, one dont need to use grammar. The point is to make the listeners understand..
@@212YOUNESS nop. While speaking, you don't think about what you memorised. Like, past simple perfect shit. It comes naturally by listening to fluent English, like in movies and stuff.

„I may invite them to dinner.“ „She said (that) SHE might invite them to dinner.“ It isn‘t they might invite... she might invite.. would be the correct answer.
"she said that she might invite them to the dinner". not "she said that she would invite them to .........
yep right they should be careful while making a video
Be careful making the video!

Tomorrow will change to 'the next day'
I also agree
The following day also
Why cant it be the day before?
Anyways I know that in reported speech it is not "tomorrow" because the person bay be reporting it on a different day (like if he / she said it on 3/4/19 and another person reported it on 10/9/19)
The day after

Very good I have understand
Your way of teaching is outstanding
Amazing grammar video!
omg , that was so helpful , i don't know why our proffesors have to make it complicated , explaining basics should be reduced in order to transfer it to students and then we can move on to exeptional examples
If we irgnore the mistake with yesterday, tmr and today good video, thanks
If we IGNORE that spelling it would've been a helpful comment😂😂😂😂

Tysm , This is what I was looking for. But I think there are 2 exceptions. I don't remember what it is tho.
This best english video about direct speech and indirect speech in whole world . The teacher said that he can teach me english. What did he say ? He said that he could teach you english . Look at more exemple s: He said that he will do the work . He said that he would do the work.
She said that she 's going to the Store . she said that she was going to the store. They said that they have to go to hospital today. They said that they had to go to hospital .
We always need to explain this topic other people for describe what they said.
Well done ..good job 👏❤

For the may --> might there was an error. It should be "She said that she would invite them for dinner." Not "She said that they would invite them for dinner."
