      YESSSS back in the like 2001 when I was little my dad got a Losi xxx-nt and that was my introduction to the hobby, and that was before brushless/lipo was really a thing so the nitro stuff was generally the king. love the smell of nitro, love stadium trucks. RIP old school Team Losi, RIP nitro 1/10th scale.

      Truggies, brushless power and SCTs killed it. That being said the class was never really as big as it seemed and its original purpose is now redundant. It was really only intended as a feeder class for 1/8th scale nitro buggy, something that 1/8th scale electric buggy does while also being its own major class.
      Even in their heyday, a lot of clubs only saw a handful of nitro trucks vs at least twice as many 1/8th scale buggies.
      It's a shame, really. I've spent several hundred to turn an old JATO 2.5 into a track monster and I have nowhere to run it.

      I recently exhumed my RC10 GT that's been mothballed for almost 20 years. After running electric for so long the smell of nitro and the crackle of the OS 12 CV really brought back some memories.

  • @jcchaconjr

    It’s been this way since the trucks were introduced almost 30 years ago with the original RC10T, which was pretty much an RC10 buggy with wider suspension arms, custom shock towers, and longer shocks. The wider stance, combined with relative low CG, makes them much easier to drive. If you have a good neutral setup, most of the time, you may just have to change tires based on what the track likes, but you can usually figure that out from what the locals use.
    The only time I recall ever having to change shock settings was to adjust based on how smooth or rough the track was overall.
    Wow, it’s crazy to hear some company names after all these years: MÍP, Lunsford... good to see that these companies are still around, particularly Associated. I wasn’t sure how things would pan out after they merged with Thunder Tiger many years ago. I haven’t raced since about ‘98 and only did very little off-road (I mostly raced on-road), but I still remember those days like it was yesterday.

  • @oPAULo711
    @oPAULo711 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    RYAN!! You said it yourself. You said it right in this video. Stadium trucks are more fragile than buggies. Heavier wheels and longer arms make them more fragile and prone to breakage. Yes they are easier to drive for the same reason but they are more fragile. Even if you never crash, the extra weight of the wheels and tires will wear things out FASTER. If you never break a hub or arm it will wear out faster than a boggy because the arms are longer and the wheels and tires are MUCH heavier. Keep this in mind....

    I’m only a couple minutes in but I want to toss in my opinion. There is no better RC for a first than the traxxas rustler 2wd. I know traxxas gets a lot of hate but hear me out. It’s ridiculously cheap ($160 brushed-$200 with basic batteries and 270 with vxl), has a vast upgrade network, comes with tires with actual grip (but won’t last long) and can really answer the question of if you want a monster truck or buggy, or actually a stadium truck. They have enough blend of the two that it really does make it easy to tell what suits you. If you almost never use the suspension and ground clearance, try a buggy. If you find yourself needing more suspension and ground clearance, go MT. Happy with it? Keep on with STs and SCTs. It’s a respectable Basher but it’s best quality is as a frame of reference.

    My dad introduced me to racing with an original RC10 converted to a stadium truck. He started out racing Tamiya Blackfoot, then the RC10, then the RC10T. We've many times tried getting back into RC, but there is just a lack of tracks and interest around us. We've done 2wd/4wd oval, 4wd road course, truck and buggy.
    If we started something ourselves, we've discussed limiting classes. Stadium Truck for entry level racing, a "race what you have" class for fun. 4wd buggy, and maybe a 2wd buggy. The idea is to have fewer classes in places with fewer hobbyists. We've also talked about requiring people to mentor someone if they want to race in certain classes. Pair racers with newcomers to help them learn.

  • @gigasipke

    That vintage looking body is sweet. I've been racing non competitive and club racing for 10+ years. For me the competitors racing truck are having more fun. Some of the same drivers in buggy are uptight and not having fun in buggy, but once they get on track with the truck they are having a blast. I personally love 2 wheel buggy on dirt but can't really stand it on carpet. But truck is so much more fun on both dirt and carpet. Your statements about the tuning window being larger for the truck are correct, so it then comes down to the driver adapting to the truck to make up for the sub optimal settings.

I want to get into it (and have for years) and last year I bought a traxxas bandit to dip my toes in the water, but there’s no point for me to go hard with kit cars because I don’t have anywhere to race nearby (that I know of). How could a newbie go about finding places to drive, and how should they move from a traxxas to a kit car?

Get a good charger battery tools like mip screwdriver kits and get the tires that are correct for the track. Stadium Trucks are awesome! I used to love racing my B3 and T3 factory team kits back in the early 2000's. For me though ever since I was a kid I always had a thing for Buggys though. I just like the looks of older buggys. (hate the new cab forward look). But I also love the challenge that buggys present. Stadium trucks are too easy to drive though. They just have too much grip and are in my experience easier to dial in. SC trucks are kinda like buggys to in that they dont have the same grip a stadium truck has and there for are a bit more challenging to drive fast.

I'm happy to see trucks making a comeback just as I'm just getting back to the scene so I will be watching to see which manufacturers will be releasing 4wd trucks/ truggies later in the year. All the success that buggies have had over the years has made every other class posible. For me growing up in the late 80's early 90's, buggies are what rc was. If we are talking racing, anything winning at the track has "buggy" aspects to the platform. Trucks are more fun for for sure, because they are more forgiving, but nothing will turn heads and drop jaws like a dialed in buggy. Your right, trucks are funner , but buggies are better, cooler, faster😀

If you’re going’s to race, 2wd Buggy is most popular, followed by 2wd mod buggy, 4wd buggy and 4wd mod buggy. In other words if you want to race you should get something that’s popular in your area. Which is why I got a 2wd stock buggy. Good looking car though👍 and always love your content.

    I don't disagree with you about them being more fun. However, i think for the beginner 2wd stock buggy is so much easier and simpler to drive than 2wd Stadium. Working at a hobby shop/turf track i always steer newbies to 2wd buggy over stadium. I think out of the box the B6.2/22 5.0 is way more forgiving than ST. Now, we race on turf and carpet so the opposite may be true on dirt/clay. I just don't have the experience on those surfaces.

But now oval racing is all there is in my area. All others got shut down. Wish I could afford to open my own track! But still stadium truck is my favorite and I like short course also.

    Hi Ryan, you’re setup is meticulous and the attention to detail is amazing 🤩 you know the intricacies of setting up your rc and understanding what makes it better and what doesn’t. I love watching how consistent you are on the track, niiiiiiiiice. Awesome videos man. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧
    Ps...... i used to race the Associated RC10 way back in the day and loved racing it, i was never an A main winner, in the all Ireland rc racing, i could win the B final and get bumped up to the A main back row, but I never finished last.

    Good point (and video). Off topic: So "Stadium Trucks" are always (traditionally) 2WD? What do one call a similar 4WD Stadium Truck? (I know some call them truggies nowadays, but ...). Can it still be named a Stadium Truck if it is 4WD? Wondered about that for a long time.

    I love short course because of the carnage of 10 full fendered trucks crashing and rolling down the track, demolition derby style lol.

    Ryan your videos are great man. I aim to get my kids and myself into RC and I actually aspire to race at the local club. I did a few years back get a brushed 4x4 Stampede which gave us a taste. But then life got busy. But now I am dying to get my start in club racing. I figured due to lack of $ AND skill I’ll start out with 2wd SCT. Build skills learning how to control 2wd and save pennies for a 4x4 better end brushless SCT like TLR or TA. I really want to learn and race with my son.
    THEN I find your channel now I aspire to buggy some day but truck for now. Seems you prefer ST over SCT? If you see this and have time could you touch on why?
    Thanks for putting out such awesome content man. You’ll build this hobby and fill it with addicts the way you’re going now!
    God bless!!!
    Jimmy

    if you race on my home track you will always be tuning and chasing traction no matter what you drive. its really low bite sandy and dusty, you know its "off-road" like it use to be in the 80s and 90s😀. i agree, high bite would be more fun but less challenging. i love the guitar playing at the first of the video who is that?

  • @olds97lss
    @olds97lss 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The old school 2wd stadium trucks are a pain to drive. They really teach you how to control your throttle. My first RC was a xxx-nt rtr. I just bash, but in the dirt, it was still a handful. A 1/8th buggy is like driving a high flying tank! Just turn the wheel and gun it! Never drove a 2wd buggy. Guessing they would be a bit more annoying than the 2wd st since the tires are narrower.
