    This just explained some weird kinda transformer I salvaged from something. It had only three coils, but two of them were inputs with one center-tapped, and the other is just a simple output, just like this ozone generator has.

    Hey +bigclivedotcom so since both the negative ion generators, and the ozone generators use a high voltage corona discharge, is this merely a difference in power output that distinguishes them? If so, then do both generate negative ions as well, but this one just generates more ions along with higher levels of ozone?

    i got one similar years ago from Amazon labeled Proto Air but haven't used it in quite some time thinkin it wasn't doin anything. ran across a couple take to bits videos here and found mine to open up. it definitely has circuitry, but the end has a wire/fine tip which i assume is a different method than the ones shown in BigClive's collection of car plugs. is there a sure test to know whether or not it works as intended other than by smell?

      If it has a sharp point then it sounds like it's an ioniser, which is good. It will produce a very tiny amount of ozone, but its main function will be to precipitate dust out of the air.

  • @TheHeartCharmer

    I plan to make an ozone generator for my car to improve the efficiency. It will feed ozone into the air intake. I wonder if I will run into any/many issues when using a car ignition coil to generate the high voltage. After watching this, I am thinking to use a bulb with stainless wire mesh wrapped around it to create the discharge. I am not an electrician, so I am unsure of if I need other components or not.

    • @PF-gi9vv
      @PF-gi9vv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't realise it could improve efficiency? You need a high frequency switching circuit in order for the coil to create high voltage.

    The glass of the Neon lamp will NOT conduct the electrons, instead it acts as a dielectricum in a condensor. Therefore the circuit uses HF AC!

    • @bigclivedotcom
      @bigclivedotcom  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ifell3 It's ozone. A proper negative ion generator uses either needles or a carbon fibre emitter to charge the air with an electrostatic field. Many ozone generators are passed off as ionizers to help sell them, but do not ionise the air beyond the unit at all.

    I'm not sure about how good it is for your health though. I tried doing something like this with a TV flyback, and while it felt very refreshing and "mountain air"-ish at first, after a few days it starting having a really irritating effect on my respiratory system and I stopped using it. It does help with cleaning dust & particles from the air though, because they're all on the ceiling and wall now, which both have turned black. :)
    Maybe the flyback is too strong? I used the original circuit on the TV board, I didn't build one of those drivers that arc a foot long across terminals.

    • @Heizenberg32
      @Heizenberg32 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ri Max Ionizers are what help pull dust out of the air. Ozone is generally what causes irritation. But by their nature almost any ionizer also produces a certain amount of ozone and vice versa.

    • @dbeierl
      @dbeierl 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +realcygnus the primary side oscillates at low voltage and high current. It's magnetically coupled to the secondary side which reproduces the oscillation but with high voltage at low current. The three windings -- primary, feedback, and secondary -- are all part of the big transformer on the board. The secondary winding is physically divided so that the enamel on the wire won't have to withstand the full voltage difference from one end of the winding to the other end.

    Won't ozone wreak havoc on rubber seals, gaskets etc?

    • @mikemotorbikeca
      @mikemotorbikeca 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got excited about ozone, and researched it. That certain gaskets/seals may rot is my understanding also, although everything in moderation. People with rare or special instruments or gadgets might avoid high sustained concentrations from O3 devices in the area. Mind you, photocopiers also produce ozone, as did tube TV, etc.
      Ozone is natures purifier, a certain amount of ozone is always present in the air as it's necessary for the oxidation of decaying organic matter: why doesn't nature stink with all that decaying going on from the cycle of life? Ozone is especially detectable after a rain storm. Why do we open our windows? It's not for the air cycling, but the purifying effect of the ozone we associate with fresh smell.
      Odour remediation companies use powerful ozone generators to clean bad smells. The occupants return after a few days when the treated air is cycled with fresh. If you use one at home, air out the house somewhat when you get home, and turn it off.
      They really work. It's like bleaching the air. I got rid of my generators though, and use something even better.
      Which is "Beneficial Microorganisms", that I ferment myself from a mother culture called "EM-1" (patented) I buy that has been produced under scientific conditions. It is a combination of three specific microorganisms. It employs synergy rather than killing.
      The EM digests all dead organic matter- including the INeffective microorganisms, which INcompletely digest it, causing the stink and more importantly, pathogens. Flies will not lay larvae on EM treated manure or compost, as there is nothing left for them to eat.
      More than that, microorganisms influence our minds through chemical interaction with the foods, medicines and toxins we ingest. So better use good EMs: for complete digestion and nutrient uptake of livestock and plants to increase yields. Use it on your car seats, under your armpits, as a counter wipe, in waste treatment plants, in petfood, and after a nuclear disaster.
      Sorry about the wall of text, but I thought you should know.
      PS: I love your teardowns Big Bear Clive.

      It's mis named. It causes the particles in the air that you can't see to drop to the ground (or floor) leaving the air that you breath fresher. It's just crazy that these criminally insane people go through this much trouble to make a fake. The circuitry is quite simple. Very cheap to make. So why not just MAKE THE REAL ONE? Don't know why they decided to call it that. Ozone is located in the upper atmosphere. If there's any left.

    Well, that was a fun video. Got me thinking, I have a few failed compact fluorescents bulbs in my hazardous waste bag, let’s see if they work.
    I wrapped about 2m of solid core wire (from a discarded cat 5 cable - insulation stripped off of course) around a 1/4 inch threaded rod to make a long copper spring.
    Cut the electronics off the cf bulb so I just had the spiral tube left.
    Pushed the spring over the spiral tube from one end and spread it out along about half the length of the tube.
    Then, using one of those cheap Chinese cigarette lighter type high voltage generators I connected one end to the copper spring, the other to the cf bulb wires, doesn’t matter which wire, any one that stick out of the tube will do.
    Apply about 5V and the bulb fires up nice and bright. The nauseating smell of ozone (I presume) assailed my nostrils and wallah, I have the first part of my sterilization container.
    Can’t say how much ozone but it seems to work. Can’t see the purple corona above the cf bulb’s bright light but smell is there within seconds.
    Only problem is that the cheap electronics gets very hot so I have had to add a temperature sensor to the transistor’s heat sink with a little circuit to turn it off when it gets above 70C and on when it gets below about 50C. We still have a few weeks of lockdown so who knows how much it will develop by then.
    Thanks for the idea.

    Why would you want Ozone in the car?

    • @bigclivedotcom
      @bigclivedotcom  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It gets rid of strong odors by oxidising them and can also kill airborne bacteria. The downside is that ozone oxidises other materials like rubber and metal too, and isn't good to breath large amounts of continuously. But having said that, these units produce low levels of ozone. (But still strong enough to notice when I tested it.)

      Based on a quick check about side-effects, ozone and speakers don't mix well as it can attack the foam/rubber surround of the speaker cones, so probably not wise to use one in a car with any serious speaker upgrade.

    From Wikepedia: Ozone is a powerful oxidant (far more so than dioxygen) and has many industrial and consumer applications related to oxidation. This same high oxidising potential, however, causes ozone to damage mucous and respiratory tissues in animals, and also tissues in plants, above concentrations of about 100 ppb. This makes ozone a potent respiratory hazard and pollutant near ground level. There is a great deal of evidence to show that ground level ozone can harm lung function and irritate the respiratory system.[33][43] Exposure to ozone (and the pollutants that produce it) is linked to premature death, asthma, bronchitis, heart attack, and other cardiopulmonary problems. Ozone generators are used to produce ozone for cleaning air or remove smoke odors[68] in unoccupied rooms. "evidence to show that at concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone is not effective at removing many odor-causing chemicals" or "viruses, bacteria, mold, or other biological pollutants".

    • @bigclivedotcom
      @bigclivedotcom  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The real ones produce a surprising level of ozone, that is a strong airborne oxidiser. So the real thing will absolutely nuke airborne odours in a car. Preferably while you're not in it.

    • @ASilentS
      @ASilentS 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      bigclivedotcom Ozone at human acceptable levels has been shown not to be effective at deodorizing or disinfecting. Sadly, a lot of 12v sockets turn off with the car, so you couldn't let it build up overnight or something : (

    • @Doazic
      @Doazic 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I mean, you just have to get near a generator to smell it. I'm wondering if maybe the issue is that it just masks odors and after you shut it off the smells remain? Or if the amount of ozone required to actually sanitize would be harmful to health.

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Doazic Oxidizing odors works, it works the same as peroxide. However, it will not remove the source of the odor. You have to clean the car first, and the ozone generator will deodorize airborne odors. I am not sure what the OP is on about, its very sound science. Perhaps it has to do with the amount of ozone generated, or attempting to deodorize rotten fish without first removing the rotten fish xD

    • @stumbling
      @stumbling 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SilentS Why must you slither so? No one has made any claim that it disinfects, and Clive has said you should not be in the car while it's in operation, so talking about "human acceptable levels" is redundant. Let's not split hairs.

      joelie83 They will generally either just refund your money, or try and fob you off by asking you to return it with recorded delivery knowing it would cost more to do that than the cost of the unit. Just say that's no problem if they pay for the return shipping in advance. Then they may try to offer a partial refund. You can either take that or hold out for the full refund.

      Because this device isn't supposed to be used while you're in the car. As you might know, Ozone is a strong oxidizer, so, while you're not in the car, you can use it to break up the molecular bonds in moleules we commonly associate with bad smell.
      ---
      From what I have read in the final report of the study you linked, Ozone does not cause cells to mutate, but it supports their growth, which does make sense, seeing how cells need Oxygen to turn their food molecules, like glucose, into energy.

    While this might oxidize organic matter in the air of the car, such as car exhaust fumes and the amount of Ozone generated is relatively small, it can build up in the car's enclosed environment. The products of this oxidation may be more toxic than the original fumes. Ozone is 10 times more toxic than hydrogen cyanide. There is a possibility that the ozone will attack the plastic and metal fittings of the car, making the plastic brittle and leaving a corroded surface on exposed metal. If the oscillator circuit is not well suppressed, it's operation can result in electrical noise being injected on to the car wiring, resulting in radio interference on the car radio and audio. So this is one product I will not be fitting in my car.

    • @lorenhusky2717

With a simple thing, they fed the World's insatiable thirst for gadgets that will "do" things for them, instead of them making things for the World. The idea is ingeniously good. Thanks. The rest of the World is doomed; all their industries, I mean, if we do not do as they do: COPY and make.{edit: I forgot to notice the deception behind these merchant's philosophy.
