Hallo JayB, Kannst Du mir etwas Erklären?
Is there any way to add measures to a section after writing? For insurance if I wrote 4, then decided I wanted 8, I can't copy or extend the pattern to be 8? It's strange that the measure count can only be changed when empty.
Hello!! So, I just purchased a qy70, and after few experimentations, the memory is now full. I wanted to know how can I find the data filer program compatible with my mac 10.13? or how do you export your songs data please?
You can always use Bulk Dumps to export your songs and patterns. Just make a MIDI connection from the QY to your computer, use a SysEx tool like Snoize SysEx Librarian, and on the QY go to Menu -> Utility -> Menu -> Bulk Dump to transfer sounds. You can also download the QY70 data filer for Windows from my website and run it via wine (e.g. CrossOver, Wineskin Winery or PlayOnMac). Though I experienced issues using the latest CX22 versions so better get the second or third latest version of Wine.
Hey man! Great tutorial! I have a question: can you "punch in" chords as in, say, an Omnichord? Meaning that you press for example, an E button and a sus4 modifier and the QY registers it as that chord while recording? Or is the FNGR function only useful to transpose already existing progressions? Thank you very much!
@@JayBmusic See, to me that's fascinating. This device is from the the turn of the century and today, I'm aware of only Cubase and Studio One Pro which do this - and in the case of Cubase it's destructive.
Such a great overview. Thanks. Would you consider showing how you record from the device (either by transferring MIDI data to computer and reassigning voices in a linear manner, or recording to tracks). Curious how i would get sketches from the QY100 into something more maleable with an eye on doing much more on the computer...
copy stuff to song mode and export to MIDI file via Smart Media card which then can be read from a computer and used in any kind of MIDI capable software. Some day I will make another video about song mode but I can't say when.
The QY react to most standard MIDI control changes so your average MIDI keyboard should be able to change volume, pan, cutoff frequency, resonance, attack and release times, portamento, reverb, chorus and variation sends. You cannot control effect details such as reverb time or chorus LFO speed because these require sysex and I don't really think a MIDI controller supports that. No, the QY doesn't have an arpeggiator. You can emulate an arpeggiator through the pattern mode though.
From what I remember, even though it has a 16 channel sequencer you can only send out channels 1 to 8 *or* 9 to 16 at one time. I think that's what put me off buying one when they were released originally. Such a powerful sequencer though.. Might be worth picking one up for modern analogue gear. 🤔
Those 1-8 and 9-16 are the settings for sending out pattern events. The QYs are 24 track sequencers. On Song mode you have 16 linear MIDI tracks that go straight to MIDI Out (and the internal tone generator of course). But since you cannot put more than 16 channels over one MIDI line you have to decide whether you want the pattern tracks to be mixed with channels 1-8 or 9-16 or not at all. This of course only affects Midi Out, not the internal tone generator.
@@JayBmusic oh, OK. I need something that can run all 16 midi channels at once so maybe I'll take another look at these. I'm using 2 yamaha sy85's for sequencing at the moment, so one of these would be less space consuming.. Lol..
No. It's always the XG default reverb and chorus settings. Also when you load any pattern in a song the reverb settings are reset. The only way to edit these settings is by adding sysex commands either inside the pattern or in the song to change these settings.
After watching your videos, I got me one of these, this thing is really powerful. I also ordered his older brother, the QY700 for the studio. They are perfect since now the Yamaha montage does not come with an integrated sequencer. I could use take the QY100 when out of the studio, and just send the midi to be recorded to the DAW or the other Outboard Synths or both at the same time, depending on you midi routing options. Thanks for your vid post, very informational.
Well, you can create MIDI files with your sequencer programs, import them into your QY and then make patterns out of these. However, you cannot directly create patterns with Cubase or Cakewalk.
Dear JayB, Thank you so much for answering. If you don't know how to do it, it's hard to write patterns manually in QY70. That's why I've never tried. I will combine the rhythm patterns and bass lines with Midi file and try to send them by usb to QY70. I'll let you know the result to you.
I don't think there's a direct way to convert them. Also I think the styles might be a bit too complex for the QY system. But basically it might work when done manually.
Hi JayB. You've inspired me to get a QY70, and it's been great! Q: Is it possible to change voices (ie to a different preset)while a song/pattern is playing? Currently (in pattern mode), I have to stop the sequencer playing, then go menu->edit->menu->phrase table to change the voice, but I want to scroll through different voices/presets while the song is playing so i can see which one matches the rest of the music.
@@grunntalll I guess because it's the way the factory patterns are made. Also if you define it in the phrases you can easily change sounds for different sections.
Coming from a music tracker background, I wanted to transition into the QY100 and I have several questions: 1.) How many phrases can I add into a track? Would I be able to add four phrases into C1 (for instance), so one phrase plays a set of chords then there's slight variation with the other three phrases? 2.) How many user patterns can I add into a section (i.e Intro, Fill AB, etc.)? Is it just one pattern per section to create a song or am I able to also put multiple user patterns down to make a proper buildup, transitions, etc.
Révolu It's always one phrase per track per section per pattern. So to make variations you either make the pattern longer or use various sections. You can use several patterns in a song but each time the pattern changes the QY will send a bunch of midi messages to its tone generator with new instruments settings and effect parameters and so on. So you might experience a little sound gap in between. With the QY100 the gap is very small, but with the QY70 its definitely audible.
So from what I'm understanding, you're able to write various patterns then jump between them to write a complex piece? Or is it limited to writing loops and sketching out ideas? The most I've worked with in terms of step sequencers is Nanoloop if you're familiar with it. You're able to write phrases for numerous tracks available, then jump from one phrase to another in that same track (i.e. melody/lead) while the others play the same one (bassline, drums), or move all of the phrases together at once. Is it pretty much the same concept/idea?
yes, but I could not find the way today during many time...and dident see any TH-camr explaining this simple thing. Theoricaly I gave the size I wanted in the song but the song continue, does not loop the 4 bars. My idea is put chords (any progression) and study with this, if you know how, tell me please 🙏🏼 thanks a lot!
Well there's two ways of doing it: you can either place a pattern no. 129 "---END---" on bar 5 and then start cycle playback by holding Shift and pretting Play. But there's always a minimal gap when it jumps back to bar 01. A better solution would be duplicating your chord sequence with Job 09 (copy event or something). Set the range from bar 01:01 to 04:04 and insert them at 05:01 as many times as you want (99 is maximum as far as I know).
@@JayBmusic Thanks a lot, I will try this last option, but is very strange. As I know in QY20 and QY22 you have the option RPT (REPETITION) and that's all...Greetings from Spain!
Excellent tutorial as usual Could you please let us see the other auto you made ? He is complementary to this one i think ! Great job and thanks for all
Hmm, you mean record Something in multomode while at the same time playing on the internal keyboard? Or first multi mode record and then afterwards overdub? Either way is possible.
@@JayBmusic ok exemple. I send my 16 midi channels in the QY70 and i make a user of 8 measure. After the 8 measure can i add more stuff without stop record and restart it?. To make it simple i want to use the sequencer like à digital delay. Loop and overdub as i want. Can i?
A very promising little machine. However, I'm looking for a device where I can input my own song's notes track by track, voice by voice, from one bar to another as I wish, copypaste parts of the song, quantize and load/save to USB/MicroSD card on the go. This seems like some DJ device for style making which is really nice considering that the chord transposition is far better than my old Yamaha PSR-79 in which's manual I've found out about the QY series, but I need something that's more fit for a music school graduate who has actual music composition ideas that cannot be limited to just styles. Do you know what that device would be? My budget for such a thing would be no more than $100 considering that with enough time and effort I could use an Arduino development board with an audio chip to make my own with only the functions I need, but I don't want to reinvent the wheel.
Well actually the QY can do this in song mode. 16 linear tracks, copy & paste, everything you want. the only thing is that saving only works on smart media card or via MIDI.
@@retrozvoc6189 actually the latest model (QY-100) has a slot for some sort of memory cards (smart media or something), if you really need that for some reason. "USB-support" for anything with MIDI ports is provided by a generic USB MIDI adapter, so it's no problem at all. it's plain idiotic when some modern MIDI gear has no MIDI ports (that's not funny) at all because they are "USB-supported" - and thus you can not directly connect such "midi gear" to actuall midi gear.
Just got qy70 off eBay today and your vid spared me lots of reading before I managed to record a sequence.cheerio Edit :I decided to share about external synths connectivity now uploading. Now link: th-cam.com/video/AxW1S3pHGxI/w-d-xo.html

It saves automatically. Unless your backup battery is empty. If all data is lost when turning off, open up the unit and replace the button cell battery (a CR2032 IIRC).
This is difficult to word but I'll give it a go: Do you know if, within song mode, there is a way of triggering patterns to start at different bars. For example, I want the first 2 bars (1 + 2) from Main A, followed by the final 2 bars (3 + 4) of Main B?
How can I save tracks on my QY70? Batteries for this sequencer go dead after 5 years. This means all your tracks get wiped off! Its happened to me before. I have a Mac that I need to transfer and save my QY70 tracks onto. And then transfer back to my QY70 - when the battery goes dead. I'm not very tecky, so need some simple process. A tutorial on about this saving QY70 tracks onto an external device would be very useful.
Why not quickly replace the backup battery? It's a CR2032 and it's easy to do. Mine lasted for 10 years. gaute.lykkenborg.no/2006/12/yamaha-qy70-backup-battery.html For backing up you need to send bulk dumps from the utility menu. I might make a video about that one day.
there's a special QY70 data filer program somewhere at yamahas, and a pdf manual for it. that wouldnt be easy to find because the sales-fukers have messed their site ones again and overall dont care much about you to use their "outdated" gears once bought for a freaking half a thousand. but at least you know what to search for. for some reason i have a mac version on the HD (though i only distantly saw a mac this year, for the first time in my being) and i definitelly downloaded it from somewhere just this week. also probably a generic SisEx librarian tool (like Elektron C6 wich is for both systems) will help as well - i dont actually own a QY70 or 100 to check for that, only a QY20.
I've had a QY100 for years and honestly can't stand the thing. I just suck at programming it and never had the time to really learn how to use it. I figured I would watch some tutorials and give it another chance but after watching this I don't think I'll ever get the hang of it.
If you're more comfortable working in a DAW, there is Yamaha's S-YXG50 VSTi, which is basically a QY70/100 with some additional sounds. th-cam.com/video/NQvPSDzPLMQ/w-d-xo.html
@@SamHocking Interesting. I'll have to check that out. Thank you for the suggestion. I'm pretty good at navigating DAWs and for some reason don't mind spending hours programming drums down to minute details on a DAW whereas on the QY100 I lose my patience. I think what bothers me the most with the QY100 is the tiny screen, little buttons and interface and having to jump back and forth through the menus. Are you familiar with any newer sequencers or drum machines? I would like to get something I could use live that's somewhat user friendly.
@@cdkilo77 No problem. Search google for s-yxg50 vsti and first result will be the place to download it. You will need an XG Editor to edit patches as the VSTi has no editable interface to speak of. Generally, you'll run the VSTi in your DAW, or within an external VSTi host such as SAVIHost, then use a loopback midi port to connect it all up to midi and then take the audio back to your DAW's input bus either physically or virtually. As for drum programming, I can't help, I don't really do any live drums, just sequence on the DAW I'm afraid.

Edit:
Also alles gut!
do more!! love this little machine
Hello JayB, how is posible to create for example 4 bars with 2 chords in a loop, could you tell me? thanks a lot for your help.
Sure. Technically you can ignore the entire chord section and just make 4 bars the way you want.
Is it possible export a song in the Yamaha QY100 as Midi in the smart card and load it in Windows 10?
Yes, that's possible.
Or alternatively, could you record a chord progression live like you did at @25:05 into a new pattern (using overdub) or song? Thanks!!
Do the chords actually alter the recorded MIDI data or is the MIDI revoiced during playback?
It's revoiced during playback.
Nice tutorial! Can you controll the qy effects/ sliders /parameters and mixer etc from an external midicontroller?
? Do the QY have an arpeggiator
I just bought one of these but want to connect it to my computer to save the songs to my computer as well as update the firmware. How can I do this?
Lol..
@@Gainn Check out the Yamaha RS-7000.
does the reverb settings from song mode transfer to pattern mode?
also could you make song mode tutorial?
Thanks for your vid post, very informational.
ok 3 years later ... what are your thoughts? Still using the QY700?
Is it possible to install user rhythms? via any way, Cubase or Cakewalk. I would appreciate it if you answer please, thanks and regards.
Can we convert Yamaha tyros styles for qy70, thanks.
You could do this in mixer view too. It's just the "not so clean" method. ;)
@@JayBmusic brilliant! vielen Dank!
@@JayBmusic whats not so clean about it? Didnt understand in the video why youre not using the mixer view to change sounds.
@@grunntalll I guess because it's the way the factory patterns are made. Also if you define it in the phrases you can easily change sounds for different sections.
@@JayBmusic ahhh yes. Of course!
Coming from a music tracker background, I wanted to transition into the QY100 and I have several questions:
1.) How many phrases can I add into a track?
Wait... Do you want to create an entirely new pattern or do you want a 4 bar loop with two chords of an existing pattern?
@@JayBmusic I want to put the chords that I want and create 4 bars for example...
As I know in QY20 and QY22 you have the option RPT (REPETITION) and that's all...Greetings from Spain!
hi, can you create midi program change sequences? I would like to use it for my whammy
Yes you can. Just insert them manually as events in the event editor.
Has anyone tried the Yamaha Mobile Music Sequencer for IOS or Android? It's based on the QYs. Though it seems that Yamaha stopped updating it in 2013.
I tried it and made a small beat with it. But it's not enough so I could say whether it's good or bad.
@@JayBmusic I sent you the manual if you want to take a look. I don't have an iPad.
Excellent tutorial as usual Could you please let us see the other auto you made ? He is complementary to this one i think ! Great job and thanks for all
Hi i have a question. Can I record live with multi mode and overdub live?
Hmm, you mean record Something in multomode while at the same time playing on the internal keyboard? Or first multi mode record and then afterwards overdub? Either way is possible.
@@JayBmusic ok exemple. I send my 16 midi channels in the QY70 and i make a user of 8 measure. After the 8 measure can i add more stuff without stop record and restart it?. To make it simple i want to use the sequencer like à digital delay. Loop and overdub as i want. Can i?
Oh I'm sorry, sure we are in pattern mode. I was thinking song mode for some reason. No in pattern there is no multitrack recording.
@@JayBmusic So what is the multi midi mode? I don t understand
@@nicolasroy6654 it's basically song mode. There you can record 16 tracks at the same time.
Great device
please show how to play drums like you do in the very ending. i only managed to play the first part, sorta tudum-tu-tum
@@JayBmusic Sounds promising! (Pun intended) Is there a European seller for these? Is it possible to get a €100 max model and how much would it cost?
@@retrozvoc6189
the european seller for these is named ebay, as the latest QY model is 20 years old.
Problem is; as far as I know, there is no SD card nor USB support.
@@retrozvoc6189
actually the latest model (QY-100) has a slot for some sort of memory cards (smart media or something), if you really need that for some reason.
Can you mix the levels of the drum track instruments individually?
You could put them into different phrases and mix those, or use the velocity to dampen the steps you wanted to
What's fngr on off do?
Cool one JayB, thanks.. Have you done Midi track bouncing from PC to QY before? Or using DAW to make sophisticated styles on QY?
I did record songs from PC to the QY before. But all styles I have programmed so far were done using the QY only.
Excellent tutorial! Glad I found you!

Just got qy70 off eBay today and your vid spared me lots of reading before I managed to record a sequence.cheerio

Great video. Thanks
so you can't record in real time right ?
do you know any loop based midi sequencer ? like keystep for example.
He recorded live twice in the video. The Beatstep doesn't let you turn off quantize.
I would like to name my patterns. Can i? How? tanks
Job No. 23 or 24. The last in the list.
@@JayBmusic thankyou very much. I had a paper with my pattern names that i will finally throw away
Danke. Arbeite schon seit 2001 mit QY 100 und habe wieder was dazu gelernt, bezg. Stepprecording.
Great tutorial.
Thanks for the tutorial!
Can i record midi from daw on qy100?
Yes, you can.
And can I on the qy70
I’m guessing yes?
Very nice tutorial 👍
How do I save it?
It saves automatically. Unless your backup battery is empty. If all data is lost when turning off, open up the unit and replace the button cell battery (a CR2032 IIRC).
YES i love this thing
thank you !
Thanks so much!! :)
This is difficult to word but I'll give it a go: Do you know if, within song mode, there is a way of triggering patterns to start at different bars. For example, I want the first 2 bars (1 + 2) from Main A, followed by the final 2 bars (3 + 4) of Main B?
menu diving heaven
Thanks stewie
How can I save tracks on my QY70? Batteries for this sequencer go dead after 5 years.
This means all your tracks get wiped off! Its happened to me before.
I have a Mac that I need to transfer and save my QY70 tracks onto. And then transfer back to my QY70 - when the battery goes dead. I'm not very tecky, so need some simple process.
A tutorial on about this saving QY70 tracks onto an external device would be very useful.
Why not quickly replace the backup battery? It's a CR2032 and it's easy to do. Mine lasted for 10 years.
gaute.lykkenborg.no/2006/12/yamaha-qy70-backup-battery.html
For backing up you need to send bulk dumps from the utility menu. I might make a video about that one day.
there's a special QY70 data filer program somewhere at yamahas, and a pdf manual for it. that wouldnt be easy to find because the sales-fukers have messed their site ones again and overall dont care much about you to use their "outdated" gears once bought for a freaking half a thousand. but at least you know what to search for. for some reason i have a mac version on the HD (though i only distantly saw a mac this year, for the first time in my being) and i definitelly downloaded it from somewhere just this week.
also probably a generic SisEx librarian tool (like Elektron C6 wich is for both systems) will help as well - i dont actually own a QY70 or 100 to check for that, only a QY20.
great! thanks!
I had one and should have kept it. Now can't find one.
Getting one Wednesday:)

Hey, great tutorial, here's my subscrip.... (squints) ... waaaaiiiit ;-)
480 ticks per quarter?! I bet u can make this thing wobbly af
