This question would be for the many who are in a stage of confusion of which hardware workstation to purchase. I have been for over 2 weeks looking for a music workstation that is complete with: sequencer, multi-track recorder and great sounds with editor. My budget is $1500.00 USD. I like the Roland keyboard action along with the PX-560 Casio. I think a video from you addressing this (or you may have already) would be of help. The problem is having everything integrated but there lacks other things which makes it a deal breaker for those wanting a DAW-less environment or just too expensive. The option would be to think "components," like you have done. To add to this dilemma, the shipping cost would be prohibitive to return the item, so you would be stuck with a workstation that later you will discover is lacking in areas which are important to you. I am reading about these stories as I go reading reviews.
My first thought: pretty much anything Motif-based. New, you're looking at Montage/MOXF. The veteran S90ES and other Motif ES-based synths are getting a bit older, but still sound amazing-arguably better than the newer boards. (JayB himself still uses the S90ES.)
XG was very under rated in late ~90-s becouse it want too much CPU power )) but it was incredible for a time... and also hardware XG device for pci bus was just a crap! Only CPU soft synth was real powered! I loved it
Alright, another question. I got a QY70 hooked up to my Electone EL90, and it works nice. But I want to take advantage of the Aftertouch functionality. Using monitoring software I've confirmed that it is putting out the aftertouch midi commands, the QY70 appears to be receiving them, it records "CAT" midi commands, but it's not effecting anything. Volume, pitch, nothing changes depending on how hard I'm pressing the keys. Any ideas?
By default aftertouch isn't assigned to anything in XG. However, using SysEx commands you can change that. I don't know the exact commands right now but you need to insert them to channel 1 using the edit function. Maybe I make another video about that one day.
Okay, I was able to look now: Edit -> Insert -> XG Exc Multi -> and there you find parameters starting with CAT (channel aftertouch) followed by cryptic letters: CATP-C = Channel Aftertouch Pitch Control CATF-C = Channel Aftertouch Filter Control CATA-C = Channel Aftertouch Amp Control and then the same for the LFO depth (hence the "D" at the end). Set the affected channel and the offset, insert it into the song (by pressing Enter), exit all and play the song so the parameters get sent to the tone generator. After that there should be effect. However, these settings need to be resent each time there was an XG reset (=after every song switch and of course after every reboot) because these settings aren't stored in the QY's actual user interface.
Hey that worked out really well, btw! Thanks! I'm currently making really horrible sounds from having tied the aftertouch to the pitch control. @@JayBmusic
Thanks greatly, you've inspired me to once again try using my qy700 as a sound source. Two questions: 1) are the sound edits you make using your external controller 'remembered' in your qy song files? I'm thinking of trying to get a Keyfax Phatboy or similar, but just wanted to make sure 2) is it possible to share edited voices with others/reuse a good edited voice in multiple different songs?
yamaha xg sounds were so beautiful...i ran a midi file o deep purple highway star and the blackmore guitar part sounded just like so realistic...no other synth to this day can reproduce that to my satisfaction...too bad i cant find a sound card for my windows 10 computer that can run a xg sound card
@@JayBmusic Thanks. There does seem to be a 909 snare but maybe the 100 is better. The lack of groove quantize on the 100 stopped me from getting that one.
The power of knowing your tools! Just curious how many sounds can it handel reliably at one time? I remember an older video when you used it to sequence other hardware and things started to lag behind.
The QY's polyphony is 32 notes. But some sounds (especially the stereo voices) use two voices polyphony per note. So layering pads can quickly get it down on its knees. ;)
Thanks! Any controller that supports sending standard MIDI Controller messages (CC#) will do. And that's one of the most basic features of a MIDI controller.
Hey there, I've been following you for years and man you look so different now lol I'm super jelly of your vsynth and i admire your skills Have a great day!!
I have an XG keyboard, but all the XG functionality is kind of hard to access with it. What kind of midi controller can I use to make it easier? I'm a total newb at this stuff.
Excellent question... TBH I don't know of any keyboard that lets you dive deeply into the XG universe. I mean sure, everything you can do with MIDI controller data, like cutoff, resonance, attack, release, portamento... But effect settings or pitch EG and everything are a different topic. Software like XGedit, XG Gold or XGworks are a better option here.
@@JayBmusicI'd love to realtime manipulate the envelopes and everything else on my Yamaha cs1x please elaborate on how to set it up. I'm using ni kore2 sending CC's to cs1x but it's not responding to it.
Actually there's none that's _really_ comparable. At least MU128 and later have a newer set of sounds over the precious models (which are closer to the QY70) however, the QY100 still has an even newer set of sounds which you hear especially in pianos and drums.
@JayB Thanks - one more question - when playing the arranger track, is it's MIDI data present at the MIDI output? I'm looking to use it as a scratchpad, so I'm comparing it to devices like the MC-101and MC-707.
@@jbognap Yes, pretty much everything can be sent to Midi out. However, pattern tracks are a bit tricky. Internally they're track 17-24 which can't be transmitted to MIDI, so you can optionally rojte them to channels 1-8 or 9-16, which again means that you can't really use these tracks in song mode.
Hi JayB, Did you ever try this QS300 voice mode thing on the QY 70 ? I am quite curious about that and therefore I want to ask you as The Expert. Some places on the internet are talking about that as a hidden undocumented sound feature, that Yamaha accidentally did release with certain XG device families, particulary the QY 70, DB60XG, SW60XG and MU10. Activated by special SysEx commands. This very special sound mode is claimed to unleash and emulate the QS300 tone generation and its editing capabilities and also a certain Voice RAM, which was undocumented… Did you ever hear of it and possibly try that out?
@@JayBmusic I wrote a fairly long post with a resource link but this obviously got deleted completely here. Just take a google search with something like “studio for all qs300 voices”. this will lead to a main resource site, where the mysterium is mentioned. Internet resources are quite rare for all that now. I am still researching on the topic and will probably post some videos if I can achieve significant results. p.s.: it will not work with the newer XG devices like the SW1000XG or a MU 100 or the QY100. So you don”t have to try there. ^^
@@JayBmusic Update one: Little disappointment. We can take out the QS 70 from the list, as I just tried without success. The device does receive the bulk dump but switches the sound on the channel to ‚OFF‘ as a result. (This corresponds to the rumor,s that Yamaha immediately switched off the undocumented feature, accidentally left on the older families. So the QY 70 probanly is a newer device family.) Well, now I will try it with another sequencer and the super old XP computer with the SW60XG (ISA!!!) sound card. ^^ This card is definitively reported to work with this… If it does not work too, then there must be another problem with my setup and SysEx, maybe.
@@JayBmusic Update two: YIKES! It is working on the Yamaha SW60XG! Some voices behave strange to velocity but it basically is working. Still have to do allot of research now. The few voices (there are over 900 on the site mentioned) sounded quite interesting and ‚new’ in relation to the fixed and well known set of XG voices. So it seems to open an eldorado for (retro) sound designers like you and me. 😜 I am so glad that I did not sell this super old retro ISA sound card and still have an old computer with those ancient ISA slots. It basically should work on a DB50XG board too. These are far more used and still available on the second hand market today. I will tra the QY70 again. Maybe there is a trick?!
JayB, thank you for sharing. I downloaded your patch library for the Yamaha S80 but haven't yet installed it. I want to be sure not to delete any patches or performance patches since they are very good also. I could use some advise if you have a minute sometime. I'm interested in the QY unit after hearing you explain things in a couple videos.. I'm curious, is that a controller keyboard you are tweaking parameters with...are those knobs simply changing the parameters on the XG QY?
Q: Controller 71 resonance, 72 release, 73 attack, 74 filter cutoff... wheres Decay? The QY70 List book has under 'midi parameter change table' .. (with a bunch of hex values and ultra nerd sysex stuff!?)
XG is a fixed set of tones and specifications across various Yamaha devices. It has been updated a few times with more modern samples but the story is still the same. So a QY70 sounds exactly like a DB50XG or a MU80. However, there are differences in function and number of sounds, but the core is identical.
@@JayBmusic Okay so they are sounds, but what does it have to do with MIDI? Sorry for the broad questions but i couldnt understand when i researched on google.
@@JayBmusic Like ive heard of XG composing and XG midi files. Do you compose differently for XG sounds? Does midi created in a non-XG unit become XG when you use a XG unit to play the sounds through?
XG MIDI files will sound more or less identical across all XG compatible tone generators, no matter if it's a arranger keyboard or a professional synthesizer. That's what makes XG programming so attractive. It's not particularly about the composition itself it's more about arranging, mixdown and choice of sounds. In non-XG units they of course will sound different and maybe even wrong if multiple drum channels are used or special effect sounds and of course dedicated effect settings.
Hi there, That PWM based sound which appears at ~15:20 I guess that one just cries out for giving it a bit of not fast pitch LFO. I'm not sure if Yamaha is capable of it though.

Jay Sands Grab the VST MIDI driver and look for the SYXG50 VST. Works like a charm on Win 10 64-bit.
Agreed, I believe that last OS was XP....?
Thanks for all the info. Are those 909 hats on the qy70? The dance kit hats seemed different.
Yeah, the 70 doesnt have 909 samples. Neither snare no hihats. Soundwise the 100 is a lot better IMHO, even though many people tend to differ.
@@JayBmusic Thanks. There does seem to be a 909 snare but maybe the 100 is better. The lack of groove quantize on the 100 stopped me from getting that one.
Interestingly the patch book shows they have the same sample there called "open hat 3" but just not the same source I guess.
@@medwaystudios The sample set it different, yes. Not only for drums but for most other instruments too.
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
No WAY!! I have literally this EXACT set up!! 👍 👍 👍
So layering pads can quickly get it down on its knees. ;)
Good thing you're not limited in when it comes to recording anymore then. :D
absolutely great job !
Great video!! Can any midi controller with knobs, control the parameters you are changing in this video?
Thanks! Any controller that supports sending standard MIDI Controller messages (CC#) will do. And that's one of the most basic features of a MIDI controller.
Great video. Thank you!
Just love the video for the ROCCAT mousepad :3
Hey there, I've been following you for years and man you look so different now lol
I'm super jelly of your vsynth and i admire your skills
Have a great day!!
Found a solution. I bought a QY70.@@JayBmusic
@@JayBmusicI'd love to realtime manipulate the envelopes and everything else on my Yamaha cs1x please elaborate on how to set it up. I'm using ni kore2 sending CC's to cs1x but it's not responding to it.
In terms of number and quality of sounds, which Yamaha MU module is closest to the QY-100?
Hi JayB,
Did you ever try this QS300 voice mode thing on the QY 70 ?
I am quite curious about that and therefore I want to ask you as The Expert.
Some places on the internet are talking about that as a hidden undocumented sound feature, that Yamaha accidentally did release with certain XG device families, particulary the QY 70, DB60XG, SW60XG and MU10. Activated by special SysEx commands.
This very special sound mode is claimed to unleash and emulate the QS300 tone generation and its editing capabilities and also a certain Voice RAM, which was undocumented…
Did you ever hear of it and possibly try that out?
TBH I never heard of that. I'll look into it.
So the QY 70 probanly is a newer device family.)
Well, now I will try it with another sequencer and the super old XP computer with the SW60XG (ISA!!!) sound card. ^^ This card is definitively reported to work with this…
If it does not work too, then there must be another problem with my setup and SysEx, maybe.
@@JayBmusic each time I post a link here, the post completely gets deleted. I have published a short demo video. it can be seen on my profile. w.t.f.
I'm guessing the knobs are for using controllers ('CC') to er.. control cutoff, res, attack, and release. Decay needs sysex for some reason.
Q: Controller 71 resonance, 72 release, 73 attack, 74 filter cutoff... wheres Decay? The QY70 List book has under 'midi parameter change table' .. (with a bunch of hex values and ultra nerd sysex stuff!?)
A: you do it with sysex. Also, strangely, I *think* there's only one decay, shared by the filter and the DCO (!?).
can someone explain the XG thing to me? Im a total noob. are these the regular QY100 sounds or is there some sort of additional chip installed?
@@JayBmusic thanks :)
Hi there,
That PWM based sound which appears at ~15:20 I guess that one just cries out for giving it a bit of not fast pitch LFO. I'm not sure if Yamaha is capable of it though.
awsum video geza i still cant load the sounds into my jp 8080 but maybe one day i mite use it
Great tips!! Thank you!!
Boring question. What laptop stand are you using back there?

I love the QY 100. I found it in the trash in perfect condition. I never give it away.
Warum schmeißt jemand nen QY100 weg? Für das Teil kriegste noch dreistellig heutzutage.
Gute Frage. :-)
Es gibt so Momente, die man kaum für möglich hält.

Ich wünschte, wir hätten bei uns hier Flohmärkte, wo man sowas kriegt. Aber hier gibt's nur tonnenweise gammeligen DDR-Krams, den keiner haben will.
thanks for making these videos :-)
Dude, you rock!
Who knows what is it Yamaha qy 300/700 and what's differance from qy 100?
They got less sounds (only basic XG) but at least the 700 has 32 MIDI channels.

I see these being sold from Japan, do you need a special adapter to run it?
They're available worldwide, not only in Japan. You need an adapter for 9-12V DC. The one I use isn't original either.
@@JayBmusic Ok cool, thanks for the quick reply! :) And thanks for showing the unit in your video. I write a lot for games and this looks like a good step into hardware.
Where within the Yamaha product line can you achieve those strings? Secondly, how did you map the controller to the QY100?
Bobcatt22 Any XG enabled device released after 2001. The Stereo Strings are XG level 1 and pretty much available in any device. Secondly, standard MIDI controllers. #01 for vibration, #74 for cutoff frequency, #91 for reverb etc.
Thank you for your response - thumbs up!
15:08 the best melody!!! :)
I just found an old pci sound card w a Yamaha XG chip on it. We'll see what happens.
Nice post!
Amazing
hi ya do you know if the xg card will have these sounds on the cs6x?
yoll d Yeah, this is possible. But I'm not sure it's necessary since you can do the same sounds with the CS6x alone.
It’s clear its the musician that matters and secondly the gear.
@lai kivi I've heard people say that they don't like the V-synth. Claiming it sounds too digital and aliased and stuff
I love that it sounds like youre making geometry dash music
