  • Years of neglect in a building that you are now in charge of can be so overwhelming. You may want to get this building clean and back in shape. But it seems so overwhelming to a custodian. Take things in small chunks to keep from getting all worked up and stressed out. I have been a custodian for over 20 years. The purpose of this channel is to share some of my knowledge with you. I remember the feeling when I first became a custodian. I was given a set of keys, a radio and a badge. Didn't get any training whatsoever. Being a custodian is not rocket scientist knowledge. There are definitely things that a custodian needs to know. I call it the art of the trade. Tips and tricks that can make the job much easier and enjoyable. Contact me: mrjeffcustodian@gmail.com

We had a situation a couple summers ago where our regular supervisor was off for health reasons so the boss made the person with the worst kept area the supervisor. We all knew this person had a filthy area, and the guy is a notorious brown noser. He came in the first day and told us our areas were filthy and we were just all looking at each other like we couldn't even believe what was happening. Then he became a micro manager and told us what to do, even though we knew what to do, we had to do it HIS way (and he has no experience, became a custodian at 60 after working retail job). That was the closest I ever came to quitting it was an absolute joke. Luckily one of the old custodians told him off infront of everyone and it was glorious and really boosted moral haha.

I’ve seen that happen first hand. I seen a guy made lead custodian than never did anything. He killed the morale. It was a glorious day when he retired.

Yes we need more custodian merch to wear at our job the uniforms r horrible. I would say stick to ur assigned area and if they(staff) ask u to do extra do what they r asking but not until they ask or just do what u r willing to do(including ur regular expected nightly tasks) otherwise u will resent ur work or even having to b there. Each person has an assigned area ive been doing this a while now and no one ever asks me if i need help which i dont but if u extend an extra hand they will expect that all the time have to watch what u offer in the way of helping coworkers.

I wish you're working in my h.s. site. My lead is the easy going person I have ever meet. He get alone with anyone, and doesn't get mad as others but he got overwhelmed with all drama and control of a group. He has to make a meeting as I suggested but he doesn't.

Yes the drama can get to a person. I have had to walk away many times. And there have been times I should have.

I'm overwhelmed for the fact "they say" we have no budget to hire more custodians so at my college a couple guys we're doing 2 huge areas just myself I'm maintaining 27 classrooms 8 of those get really thrashed daily cause they're labs but on Friday there are no students so that's the day we catchup vacuuming ,clean desks/ whiteboards plus my huge restrooms you really have to survey each classrooms and do what you can in 15 min but in the beginning of each day I have to remember don't let the job control me I control the job👍

Sounds like life’s the same for a lot of us in post-secondary. I have two buildings 27 bathrooms. We used to have our own two floors and did everything’s. snow shovelling, light bulbs, bathrooms, hallways. Now they contract out everything else and make us do a mass amount of menial tasks all day.

@@thepeoplesperson8853 wow snow shoveling geez wouldn't shoveling snow be a grounds task not necessary custodian? I'm from Cali so couldn't imagine the snow shoveling 😮 but yeah "they" usually give the harder task to us custodians

Hello! I am 22 and I was wondering, from your experience is this job a good long term career? Thank you for the videos!

Honestly no. The benefits are the best you can find, but at your age, you'd be better off developing skills and starting a career. Not that being a custodian isn't a career.

Hey Jeff, in one of your old videos you used a white plastic sheet or something as a door wedge that goes near the top of doors. What was it called again please? Can you link me to where they can be purchased.

Those came out of and old computer cart. They are dividers for lap tops. They were going to throw them away. So you can just buy them. I took some garbage and put it to use.

There are two of us maintenance at my little school I work at. I'm the day shift, other guy is afternoon/evening shift. He's supposed to do majority of cleaning, as schools out, when he has his final half of shift. He mostly works when everyone is around, to see, not so much after everybody is gone. People complain to me in the mornings, and I get pulled from my work, to do what he didn't the prior evening. He won't even restock his restrooms. Boss won't supervise, just says work it out amongst yourselves! Very overwhelming! I'm not his lead, I have no authority over him, when I bring anything up, he gets argumentative. My current plan is to answer when I'm called, please leave a note on our office door, and I'll get to it asap, and when he gets in, let the boss, and then him see all the notes. Any advice?

You do your job. If the complaints come let them come It’s not problem if Principle want step up. Ever where I have ever work had to deal with that issue in some way.

Morning Jeff. I also enjoyed your latest video. Very similar to my post here to you. Thought I'd update you, only been about a week since the comment, I've just gone about my business. The notes, and complaints have been piling up pretty consistently on his desk, or in his emails! He's been complaining to me about all their complaints! I chuckled to myself and told him, well, you do need to fill your restroom supplies. Hopefully he'll figure it out! Thanks again!
