My rune recommendations for this part of the game: Tir - Soul Eater, Cleo - Fire, Gremio - Holy or whatever, Viktor - Clone, Camille - Water (also give her the Wing Boots), Tai Ho - Holy or whatever (you can leave the castle and equip him). I highly recommend giving the good stuff to Cleo and Camille since both are good party members. Cleo is available almost always and one of the best party members in the game. Camille is also really good and frequently available (not too overpowered but not a burden, either), and she has strong and balanced stat growths throughout the entire game.
They do this throughout the whole game, I think only like once or twice they actually call him a strategist. Suikoden I has a lot of typos and mistranslations, which can be amusing, but sometimes ruins some serious moments.
Some people say that the reason they refer to him as a surgeon because of his status as a master tactician. Mathiu's deft hand in coordinating battle is like that of a surgeon's performing their work. This earned him the nickname Doc which, much to Mathiu's chagrin, stuck with him even after leaving Imperial service. You can see this at 14:50, when the kid refers to him not as Master Mathiu, but as Doc. Mathiu even goes as far as to call himself Surgeon when he sheds his hermit facade and faces his reality. ...Maybe I just made all of that up. But it *sounds* plausible, doesn't it?
I think it's a translation from Sensei to Doctor. Sensei is just a catch-all for "teacher", but lots of early media out of Japan seen by Western audiences would most recognize Sensei as the title people give to doctors in hospital/police dramas. The translation is choppy, but it's consistent if you just reconvert Doctor/surgeon back to Teacher/Master

I remember the last part all too well. This is the part that made me rage quit Suikoden when I played the game. I could not get past Tai Ho and his gambling game no matter how much I played it, so I just gave up on it.

Suiko 4 would be nice to see, I actually really liked that game a lot. It's pretty dear to me. Taking place what 100 years before Suikoden 1? Suikoden 3 is also really good even though I feel it has a lot of game play issues (just the redundancy of traveling the same maps over and over becomes so tedious I found. Wish they did things a bit better but alas...)
This is just a suggestion, but maybe we could do away with the "re-arranging the party's equipment" parts now? I mean, you keep saying they're tedious, and we've seen the process several times now, so we know how it works. I don't think we need them around anymore, and the LP will only benefit from having less time wasted on the same menus being repeatedly navigated in basically the exact same way every time. :)

Ah... the Chinchirorin mini-game. I know it's an RNG heavy beast but consider this: It may end up being your BIGGEST source of income if you do it right, capable of maxing your bits numerous times throughout the game.

This game is tedious as fuck but at the same time... I got really into it. Later on I use it so much to make tons of money. The real key is finding that sweet spot in the cup. Once you do it gets a bit better.
Game progression locked behind a gambling mechanic, so Battlefront 2 EA wasn't the first egregious use of such a strategy. Konami was miles ahead of the pack on that. #FucKonami
