  • How was the premiere episode for Marvel Studios What If? - In this 1940's set ep, Steve Rogers steps aside to make way for Peggy Carter's super-soldier Captain. The animation might be stunning, but can it grow past The First Avenger's shadow? I break down everything I loved and everything I didn't!

It's honestly feels like a safe intro to the show before we get into the ultimatly more interesting episodes in the show.
What stuck out most to me was definitely awesome animation but also the fact that you can tell some of the MCU cast isn't used to VA work. Even Howard Stark's accent kept constantly slipping out.

I see a lot of people defending the fast pacing by saying "well, they had to fit a two hour movie into 30 minutes!" But no, they didn't. They didn't need to retell almost the entirety of First Avenger. They could have just written an original story that fits into the 30 minutes timeframe. Like for example, why are the Howling Commandos even in this? They are just the same as in the movie and add nothing.

Why even limit themselves to 30 minutes tho? Maybe some contractual thing with the animators or something? But its not like they have to fit into any scheduled programming, why not just make these a little longer if they can't naturally fit into 30 minutes

@@Antonio-ys5zd that might be true, but if all the What If... episodes are 30 minutes long (including the credits), then that's nothing. Plenty of episodes of WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Solider, and Loki all clocked in close to the 1 hour mark. It is more expensive to do animation as opposed to live action, but if thats the route they've elected to take, they shouldn't cut corners on time and negatively impact the stories as a result

The Captain Carter call-name doesn't bother me when I remember were the "Captain America" call-name began, it was originally Steve's stage name. Literally his stage name. He would likely been Captain Rogers had it not been for Bucky calling for a cheer for Captain American after his rescue. Peggy doesn't have a comparable moment. The closest is when she demands a promotion to Captain, so Captain Carter calls back to that moment for her. It's not as strong as Steve's moment but nullifies my would-be feelings over a potential Peggy Carter, Captain Britain.

For me, a series like "What If?" would work best as a kind of Twilight Zone style show. Where you show how one change can drastically alter the whole history and in most cases, not in a good way.
That's how the comic book this is adapted from basically worked. Almost none of the stories had happy endings. They were essentially cautionary tales of how wrong things could go if they deviated.
The other way to go with it would be to do shows with ultra happy endings you wish had happened and know that never will for the mainstream MCU.
I just feel that packs a stronger emotional punch for a series.

As I'm watching, I'm realizing just how very *old-school* this episode felt -- much of the 1970's/1980's run of What If felt just as breezy (and shallow, tbh), right down to the montage in the middle of the episode (which mimics the splash pages used in those old books to indicate time going by. If nothing else, this genuinely did feel like an old What If issue brought to life... right down to the same flaws.

  • @UltraPrimal
    @UltraPrimal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +59

The thing I didn't like about it was how we spend the entire episode just retreading the first Captain America movie. I would have loved to see even just a montage at the end showing how the rest of the MCU changed.
Howard Stark basically created Iron Man before his son did. So I wanted to see if Tony Stark went on to do everything the same as he did originally. Did he create his own Iron Man based on his father's work? Was he an arms dealer? Was he a good guy? Or did he turn evil? Maybe Peggy and Tony hook up? Does Steve have a grand nephew or something?
How would women's right have progressed if they had this Wonder Woman-like icon back in the 40's to point to and aspire to? Maybe we would have more female heroes, more female villains, just more females in more prominent positions and roles in general.
To me, the most interesting part of What If stories isn't the simple role swap or path divergence. To me, it's where they go from there. What is the domino effect? I mean, with Peggy becoming Captain Carter, and Bucky surviving, does that mean there's no Winter Soldier? There's no Red Guardian? No other super soldiers? What about all those vials of blood they took from her? Could there have been some HYDRA agent or something who stole one of those vials, got it to enemy scientists, and created their own evil Amazonian super woman?

I feel people are being a bit overly critical and judging this as they should something like Wandavision or Loki.
This is an anthology series, ala Twilight Zone.
And add on top of that not everyone might have seen every movie in the MCU or might not remember a movie/series of events leading into the creation of a What-If universe.
So Uatu explaining the nature of the Multiverse, brief overview of the original variation of events from "The Sacred Timeline", and then pointing out the point where the two diverged, then leading the story to tell itself from there works IMHO.
It helps catch people up on a story they might not remember or know about, while also clearing up potential confusion of how it exactly got to the point it diverges.
And with more complex what ifs like the Zombie-world, T'Chala as Starlord, Gamora seemingly donning Thanos' garb and taking his place, Infinite Ultron (All ones we can tell from the poster and trailers so far), that sort of explanation could help give grounding context for a universe without taking the precious few minutes an animated show like this gets per-episode so they can focus more on the "Meat" of the What-if.
This was the first episode of What-If, so they had to explain the concept to the audience and that is fair.
We will have to wait and see if they go through the same longer introduction of the Multiverse.etc in EP2 onwards, but even then I do expect the format of
Introduction to original form of events -> Clarify the moment that deviated into this new universe -> The new Universe shows itself in the episode.
As it is a format that sort of works imho.

It’s supposed to be a parallel alternate reality. Yes they were a little fast and loose with what they did with the Tesseract. I don’t think they needed that much interaction between Red Skull and Peggy. It was about Peggy becoming a super soldier and how she’s going to be involved later on with other parts of this multi-verse. Honestly I do think they'll eventually delve more into more original takes on What If's than the movie-recaps with occaaional specific changes
I mean we are going to get Party Thor eventually, an arrogant Mjolnir-weilding Thor living in Vegas of all things, obviously resulting in Loki ruling Asgard causing MORE than a few changes
Not to mention we do get a clip of Doctor Strange Supreme asking Captain Carter who she is, when I don't even think Strange met Cap once in the Sacred Timeline. I believe this means that we might start our with similar stories compared to previous movies, but those changed up stories eventually converge as the series progresses, allowing for far more unique creativity near the end of the season

I think it was perfect, honestly because I expected this is what this would be. Marvel is currently in the more investigative phase when it comes to Multiverse stuff, and seeing where it sticks with audiences. Avengers 1 and Civil War were their "team-up" investigations to see how many super heroes could fit in one movie and still be accepted by audiences. Thor introduced a kind of magic, which if it had been more successful then Dr. Strange may have adapted the concept of "it's like science that you don't understand yet" more heavily. Currently the WandaVision and Loki have both introduced aspects of possible multiverse structures. "What if" is the first one to really use the trope of "these are our characters, but different" and so having the first episode basically be "What if Peggy Carter was the first Avenger?" I think was an excellent start. Could they have done more? yeah, but I'm more excited to see them hopefully bringing Captain Carter back and doing more with her character.

I enjoyed the episode. It did feel a bit rushed in places, but it's a 30 minute cartoon. Initially, I didn't think they needed to tell Steve's story at the beginning, but I realized that this is a new show so you have to set it up. Plus, you have to remember that somewhere down the line, say 5-10 years, someone will stumble across this and watch for the first time and may not be familiar with all of Marvel/MCU. Lastly, I took this episode as a set up for all of the changes to come. Because of that one change, it changed everything to come. Overall, I'm just excited to see what comes next. Keep up the great videos.

I think you need to go back and read some "What If" comic book stories. They always use a single issue to explore an interesting or funny concept. These are just a short episode to explore the idea.
And for the first few episodes, trust me, they *do* need to explain everything. The early episodes pay the bills for everything that comes afterwards.

  • @Longshanks1690
    @Longshanks1690 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Honestly, Steve being the first Iron Man is a far more interesting concept to me than Captain Carter lol. It also had a few moments I thought were kinda funny but that’s about it.
The major problem is the pacing, everything moves so fast with so little development because they’re just supplanting Steve’s role in the movie with Peggy with no substantive differences except she’s a woman and has to deal with Irrational McDumbass. If you already saw TFA, they’re just hitting the same notes so there’s little new or thought provoking here.
And while I like Iron Man Steve, it does bother me that he’s still alive here. Why not just kill him off and if Peggy brings the Tesseract back, Stark can be Iron Man 0.5? Surely that would give Peggy a more interesting character arc since she’d feel like she was supplanting Steve after he had been killed in action? Because as it is, why doesn’t she just help him into the pod? It’s not impossible, he was still alive and could easily have just slipped back in there, and there’s no reason for it as far as I’m concerned.
And of course, the sexism shit is just exhausting at this point. Yes, a major army leader would be THAT hostile to a female super soldier just because of a vagina, he’d have no ability to see the wider picture at all. Now, I haven’t seen TFA in a while so maybe this character was also an ass in the original movie, I really don’t remember him at all, but assuming that he was, he’s just a pointless character here since even his sexism is pushed out of the way pretty damn quickly.
I’m just disappointed by this. I was actually looking forward to this show cos I thought it would be pretty hard to screw things up if they’re only doing it episode by episode but this is NOT a good first impression and was just a bad FanFic episode that is on the quality of what I wrote when I was 14, which is not an endorsement, believe me. Then again, even from the promos, I thought this would be the weakest concept so maybe the future episodes will make better use of their concepts…one can only hope…

This felt like a fun romp that was a paper-thin subpar replacement for the exceptional Agent Carter series. They NEED to make that canon. Establish that that’s the main timeline and that Steve found an alternate Peggy. She deserves better than being a meh Captain America replacement that doesn’t even get the name or her own unique story and a reward for Steve for saving the universe. Peggy didn’t need the serum to be a hero the level of Captain America and I hate the implication that she’s not worth headlining a canon MCU property except maybe when she got lucky and got the serum in an alternate timeline, but even then it’ll be a few years if ever. For an episode supposedly about Peggy finally getting to prove her worth this episode did a whole lot to underline the fact that she hadn’t been allowed to escape Steve’s shadow in the MCU proper in the last decade of movies.
Also you’re so right, it’s way too much.

I think everything you’ve said is accurate, but at the same time I still desperately want to see more of this particular universe. I honestly thought TFA was a tad shallow myself, but it set the stage for much deeper exploration.
I want to follow skinny crippled Steve Rogers as he explores his world without Peggy, without the shield, and without the singular great evil that is Hydra/Nazism. I want to see him living his life trying to honor the spirit of Captain Carter.
I want to see him go to war again in Korea. I want him to look at the reckless aggression of MacArthur and question the wisdom of America’s fervor. I want him to discover Isiah Bradley as he is trying to save his comrades and help elevate him or break him out of prison if needed, and perhaps gain a much earlier insight into what it means to be a black man in America.
I want him to go for some last hurrahs in Vietnam and as a result end up joining the peace movement and Civil Rights movement. I want to see Steve, an old cripple and war hero without a suit of armor, standing alongside leaders of the civil rights movement in places like Selma. I want to see him, the skinny kid from Brooklyn, plant himself like a tree and says “no, you move”.

It's alright I suppose. But people don't wear the flag like they do in the USA (or at least any wear close to how the yanks do)
Plus the Union flag is a very pleasing & symetrical-ish (RIP the Irish Republic Red) so on Peggy the design just looks a bit too messy & busy.

Fellow Englishman (well, woman) here 😊 I get that take but I must say I did kinda like the UK flag on her costume. It made sense in story because it was supposedly designed for a tour selling war bonds or whatnot, and is was designed by Stark, an American. I quite liked that he wanted to show off her... Britishness, I guess. It felt less self idealizing than it would normally because it wasn't a Brit's idea. That's my take anyway. I honestly really didn't like the first What If episode. It felt really sloppy and rushed at times. The animation was really good and I loved that montage of Captain Carter beating up Nazi's too old timey music, that was all well and good. It just feel like it jumped around a lot. Like 3 or 4 scenes in and we already have Captain Carter fully suited up and her powers under control/mastered. I know they can't do a full length movie like the original First Avenger but it would have benefited from being around an hour long instead of around half an hour. This causes there to be awkward scenes like the final one where Peggy returns to the present after forcing the Tentacle Monster (I don't the name from the comics sorry) into the wormhole. The dialogue feels really clunky because they can't have a full length scene like the end of the original First Avenger but it makes it feel awkward and forced. I'm sure the series will get better but this premiere just didn't do it for me.

I have to agree with the comment about Bucky; his lines were weird. But as I remember, the What If comic this series is based on would do the same thing with a brief recap of how the original scenario played out. I think that was done because you never know where a person's jumping on point is with the comics or with the movies and television series. Yes, the established fans know these details, but the new fans or the prospective fans may not. I'm not saying that every issue or episode should include an origin story, but since the Captain American origin was at the center of the events that created the divergence between universes, I thought it made sense to include it.

i felt like when the narrator went "the timeline changed because peggy decided to stay in the test chamber" is to be honest wrong because even if peggy decided to stay in the testing chamber in the movie steve would had still become the super soldier. The spy changed it by blowing up the distraction detonation earlier than he does in the movie which allows him to shoot steve. It's still not explained why the spy decided to blow the explosives early because the whole point of him blowing them after the serum was used was to make sure the serum actually worked or that it wasn't a a decoy. Otherwise, he could've literally stolen the equivalent of cyanide or grape juice and wouldn't have known.

This should help the audience understand that one change can have subtle effects or major effects on how things play out. I think Marvel is smart to start with a subtle episode first so they don’t confuse the non hard core audience.

I’m sorry, but I have to disagree with the narration complaint. This is how What If works. It’s basically showing what would happen if a single event happened different and what would be the aftermath. For people who haven’t watched the movie in a long time or are new to the franchise, it’s important to catch them up on events and show the point of diversion that lead to this. Imagine coming into this with no narration at all and are left to pick up the pieces are you go along. It would be confusing. Also, it’s important to use a familiar story that people have a familiarity with starting out before going into more original stories.
