Wonderful to see Martin with the kids .... I had the honour of having a weekend masterclass with the late Jack Brymer when I was about 14-15 and it was based on Mozart’s Concerto and CM Von Webber’s concertos ..... it was an amazing time and the insight he gave us and tips, technique improvements and other ways to improve our playing and make us all better clarinettists was well worth the long days and practice sessions .....
Darn it, I'm so jealous! But then again, these kids are so much better than me, I can't imagine the amount of time they put into practice. Their high notes are so well controlled.
They are not playing on their own clarinets. Their embouchure shape doesn't seem to allow the sound of students we are hearing. I taught clarinet lessons for forty years starting with ones as young as 4th grade. My best student was bored going into her high-school senior year having played the Poulenec Sonata etc. as a junior and she knew she could play better than I could. So what to do? I suggested the Nielsen Clarinet Concerto just to be annoying. I couldn't play it and she had that expression of "how are you going to be able to teach this to me". So we started........only 11 pages and three major cadenzas! She came across a problem with a difficult jump to an altissimo note and I had her try something and it solved her problem. The look on her face was of disbelief. How was it possible she couldn't do it and yet I could tell her how? After a few more such instances there were no more doubts and she viewed me without question. There were two competitions of major skill for her as a senior. The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra concerto competition for up through their senior year (memorized) and the top youth symphony orchestra concerto competition (also memorized). She almost won the Milwaukee Symphony audition. She just a week "out". The runner's up got to sit in the section for the concert with the pros. She won the Youth Symphony competition (she was the principal clarinet) and played the concerto for that concert. That summer she learned the Debussy Premier Rhapsody for possible additional audition material along with the Nielsen when enrolled at the University of Minnesota. She passed up all of the underclassmen except two grad students (one of which she said she was better than) and was jobbing and subbing in the Minneapolis area as sophomore. A son, one of my two children, started college as an applied physics major, BUT has now gone to the "dark side" and is now a music ed major (his idea). Where did I go wrong.......?
@@chrisk8187is the poulenc clarinet sonata that hard? i remember playing it as a freshman and i pretty much perfected it and didn’t pose much challenge
Got to give the band teacher credit for putting this opportunity together. A chance to go to a seminar at Buffet Crampon's showroom. Taught by some one Buffet considers worthy to be teaching in their showroom. Not just "any music teacher". Learning from a professional musician and conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. Some one of his credentials willing to spend time with kids...how many pro musicians are willing and have done this??
It is hard to double tongue on a clarinet above the lowest register. I would love to hear Martin's story of how he gets such a clear "ke" in the middle register, something the clarinet resists like mad.
all becomes easier if you use softer reed, and change the embouchure - use double embouchure. With double embouchure, the tongue is set in a better position for double tonguing, and is ready for far more complex pitch controls and controls of the air pressure. With softer reed, the reed vibrates more, allowing you superior overtones, which means, better overall sound. Mr Frost plays with single embouchure, and with that horrid approach, everything on a clarinet is twice more difficult and always sounds bad. The result? More tuition, and purchase of more expensive instruments. And that’s why it takes 8 years of tuition to play something that could be done better in 3. It’s an industry based on exploitation of poor students via the poor and crippling techniques, and more, and more expensive instruments.
Gosh how awful that Martin is trapped in this terrible nightmare, tortured and torturing, exploiting and exploited. Such a shame that he is so powerless, so limited. Woe unto the world, that has no innovation or freedom in it.
Would love to have heard the actual words and sounds clearly. Please put a version out that gives us this. Missed opportunity!
agreed ditto
